I have Civil3d2012 and have created a surface in one drawing and then referenced it to another. It appears to be working, but the contour labels will not work on the drawing where the surface is referenced. I have all the appropriate layers on.

My first guess was that I had to create an instance object of the class and name it, and then use a "Create" method (e.g., CreateMultipleAtInterval) from there, like this:
Dim labelgroup As SurfaceContourLabelGroup
labelgroup.CreateMultipleAtInterval(arguments)
However, this doesn't work, as Visual Studio told me "Warning: Access of shared member, constant member, enum member or nested type through an instance; qualifying expression will not be evaluated."
I tried just saying:
SurfaceContourLabelGroup.CreateMultipleAtInterval(arguments)
But that didn't seem to work either. How this class works and get it to add some contour labels to a drawing?
I have created a data shortcut to a surface using Civil3D 2011. When I create a reference to it in another drawing, it shows up in the Prospector but nothing shows up on the screen. I have played with the surface style and made sure all the layers were on and tried closing and reopening the drawing.
I have also tried to reference it into a brand new blank drawing and I even tried to reference a surface in a different file that I have referenced several times before (in 2010). Every time I get the same results. It seems like the surface is there, but I just can't see it.
I am working in Civil 3D 2010 and I created a surface a while back which 4 pipe networks have been referenced to and the surface has been data shortcut'd. I am now facing the issue that the surface needed to be renamed.
I looked in the Data Shortcuts folder and the name didn't change on the shortcut. All the pipe networks have errors now cause it is looking for a surface that technically no longer exists.
I tried deleting the Data Shortcut and creating a new one with the new name and resetting all the networks to the new surface but I am still gettting errors.
Is there a step that I am missing to get all this to link together properly with the new name?
We have drawing "A" that contains a surface (call the surface "SurfaceA").
We have another drawing "B", that contains an alignment and a reference to"SurfaceA"
The user created EG profiles in drawing "B", and has been working on this drawing periodically.
Today all of a sudden when he opens Drawing "B", the EG profiles are missing. When you look at "SurfaceA" in Drawing "B", there is no data. We synced, we made sure of the association of the drawings to the projects, etc. etc.
I verified the data shortcuts are OK, and verified that both drawings are in good shape (via Recover and Audit)
But wait.....here is the crazy part. If you shut down Drawing "B" and open it say a dozen times, once or twice in that stretch, "surfaceA" shows up and the EG profiles will appear OK too. It's feels very random.....
is it possible to get the alignment name which the corridor surface is built from when the surface is being data referenced. in other word no corridor as the middleman.
the way i see it is when corridor suface is referenced, it becomes a regular surface and loses some properties such as parent alignment.
i am still using COM. maybe .net can do it? either way works.

View 6 Replies View RelatedIt must be the medication, but I just can't remember something I learned in the last couple weeks regarding contour label intervals. I've been using C3d 2013 for about a year now and had used LDD 2004 until the upgrade. I've become pretty comfortable with the styles based implementation now.
What exactly controls the numeric value shown in a contour label? I've got them looking fine on my site. I imported my styles and settings to a coworkers site but for the life of me I cannot remember what I had to change to get the contour labels to show increments of 1 foot (they were showing fractions of a foot)… Typing the word "fractions" triggered my recall. The problem and solution was in the drawing units.(Inches vs feet).
How much time I spent looking through the style settings in search of the one setting I was missing... both times! One of the best ways to push things from short term memory into long term memory is "Increased active practice".
One thing I learned this time: The style settings are not always the source of the problem. It could be something very basic. It may save time to check the basics first.

I have been creating contour surface labels, which utilize a 3-point contour label line with grips to adjust, and this is my question:
when i create a single contour label, clicking specifically on a contour i want labeled, the contour label line with the 3-grips extends beyond several contours and thus places a label at every contour it touches. i can manually fix this by shorting the line, but this seems very inefficient.
1. is there a setting to have the label only placed on the center grip of the three?
i am creating contours in civil 3d, exporttoautocad2010, and there is this white box under the contour label, i don't want this, i DO want it to trim the contour to show the text better but NOT the white box.

I'm working in 2011. Just labeling some contours in a new drawing, using the 'Multiple' setting. I found I could only draw one tangent of Contour Label Line. If I continued, I could click but no labels were created and on finishing the command I could see that those clicks had been ignored. What gives?
I found that the labels were on the current layer, instead of the layer they're meant to use.I also realised that my current layer was locked (from the previous task).
if the current layer is locked, the contour labels ignore the layer setting that they are meant to use, and come in on the current layer instead. And you can only draw one tangent's worth of contour labels at a time before finishing the command and restarting.
Solution: make a different layer current or unlock your layer.
are contour labels generally created on the current layer and then moved to their proper layer?Is that why it hit a snag: it wasn't permitted to move the object to a different layer because the one it was on was locked?
In C3d2011 I cant seem to change my contour label style from STYLE A to STYLE B. Seems I used to right click and change it from there but that oprtions not available?

I have no problems creating contour labels for my surface (whether using single, multiple, or multiple at interval options). I have set my contour labeling defaults to not display the contour label line, as well as set Label Mask Type to Contour Line Only. Under contour label style under Layout>Border>Background Mask, this is set to True.

I have a drawing set to UTM83 Zone 14 Meters and my drawing units is set to meters also. I created my surface from my point cloud. When i do the contour extract feature (surface object extract), the contours elevation is in the wrong datum or elevation? The surface contour is 620 but the same extracted contour says 188.97? Curious why this happens. It seems to me that it is back calculate elevation or datum to a different coodinate system.

I am using Civil 3D 2011 and wondering how to create just one contour on an existing surface at a specific elevation. I need to show where floodwaters would get to at a specific elevation so that contour would be the easiest way if I can contour the surface with just 1 elevation. I don't want to have to create 0.1' contours all over the site and then remove all the extras.
View 8 Replies View RelatedSo I have an existing grade surface and I am laying out a number of different site designs. I've got all my surfaces from those site designs on different layers each displayed in a different layout. I need to label existing contours on each layout in different places. I've setup additional contour label styles (two for each design, major, and minor) and layers (two for each design, major, and minor). However, when I add labels to my existing surface, they come in on the right layer, but whenever I freeze any of the many layers my contour labels are on, they all turn off. The only workaround I can figure is to make copies of my existing surface for each design option and label each independantly. However, this is inacceptable as far as data management goes, since my one file will be hundreds of megs with all those surfaces.

I have 400 files each represent a tile of contour at 0.5m interval, if I xref all into one dwg it is extremely slow. These files have some 3d blocks which represent xyz and I made a .net program to open each file with "readdwgfile" method. However turned out that the points are not dense enough to generate the same accuracy contours as the 0.5m contours.
I am going home now to use my home computer and see if it can handle all these files xrefed and then bind and explode.
Worst case in make another program to extract only the contours and insert into a blank database. Always difficult when not given raw lidar point files.
Total size for these contour files combined is 327mb.
We have microstation capabilities not sure if it can put in the file in an easier way. I can work with the xrefed bogged down file. But is there a way to only export what's shown ? I have frozen the layers for all other objects from all the references.
I estimated total points from contours will be 20 million. Since each generate about 50000 points. Which is still workable. The computer i use in the office just make this more difficult. Slow cpu. Difficult day. Spent 7 hours programming and got it figured out but didn't solve the problem. I should have known better 20 points are not enough to generate that look in the 0.5m contours.

I'm working on a topo survey and the contours are crossing each others (See attached pic) and what I did was edit the surface by adding points. I know that these points are fake, but how does this affect the terrain surface for design point of view? I did try swapping edge and deleting lines but makes it worse. Also as you can see in the pic, I don't see the added points like it did back C3D 2008.

I did a little test with a surface with no smoothing, a surface with contour smoothing set to medium, and a surface with surface smoothing. The results puzzled me. The contours in the surface with no smoothing matched the contours of the surface with surface smoothing. The profiile of the surface with no smoothing matched the profile of the surface with contour smoothing. Are these results typical? I was surprised that the contours of the surface with surface smoothing didn't look smoother. I was also surprised that the surface with no smoothing and the surface with contour smoothing generated the same profile.

If I create surface form CONTOUR, some polylines (major or minor) are not included in to surface. After the creation of surface, I tried to erase the existing contour lines (Polyline) from drawing but the surface will be disappearing.

I am having an issue plotting construction plans due to steep cut slopes and flat adjacent areas. I have several cuts ranging from 33%-50% adjacent to flat areas around 1%. Due to the drawing scale required by the client and the .2FT and 1FT contours required to detail the flat areas, my steep cuts appear as dark hatches due to the tight contour lines.

Is it possible to create a specific contour in the volume surface that represents the fill volume elevation (daylight line I think)? My proposed surface is a flood water elevation and I need to define the boundary at that elevation.
