AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Creating Surfaces From Existing Contour Map For Volume Calculations

Aug 30, 2012

I am working on a project, I was given a file with the contour already mapped out. I am tasked with finding volume of a fill I had to create. I made a 3-D polyline at the elevation I want my fill to start from and going down to my final grade. How can I make surfaces with my map. I do not have any files to make the surface off of. What is the easiest way I can make a layer, TIN has already been done but no surfaces are in the file.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Automatically Creating Breakline From Existing Surfaces?

Nov 15, 2012

Our company, was contracted to create a DTM of a residential neighborhood using our Lieca HDS C10 Laser Scanner.  Utilizing the Leica software I was provided LandXML file that contained a 2ft by 2ft Mesh surface along with breaklines for the edge of roadway, driveways and sidewalks, which was imported into Civil 3D 2012.

Our client now wishes for us to provide them with a breakline for the crown of the roadway.  My first thoughts on calculating such breakline was to set the Contours at an interval of 0.05' to identify the crown of the road, then drawn the break line along the crown based on contours.

Is there a way to automatically create a Breakline from Exisitng Surfaces?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Volume Calculations With Grading

Dec 30, 2013

I have my original surface I created with my point file and break lines.  I created a new surface and was able to determine how to create my grading at a 3:1 slope that stopped at the surface I created from the point files.  From there I went back to my Grading Groups and selected the Automatic Surface Creation.

From there I don’t know if I have to selected the Volume Base Surface and selected the surface I am grating from or if I can simply create a volume tin surface selecting the new surface and the original point surface for comparison. How do I make sure the Volume I am getting include the volume from the grading slope?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Volume Calculations For Concrete Piles

Dec 9, 2013

I have been asked to do volume calculations using Civil 3D for some concrete piles for a oil/survey company.  I have done volume calculations for site and land development projects but nothing to do with concrete piles before.  It also appears I am the only person with any Civil 3D back ground in the office.  I did mention my experience with Civil 3D was limited but I was trying to expand it by looking for Civil 3D jobs and working through the 2012 Mastering AutoCAD Civil 3D book.

I am assuming doing volume calculations for concrete piles is quite different from doing volume calculations for grading plans.  The company has been primary using AutoCAD Maps and doesn't have much set up for AutoCAD Civil 3D yet.

I must monthly calculate quantities. So i have 3 surfaces, one is representing the original ground level and the other two the measurements on the end of the months. Between the measurements I calculated volume. But I want calculate the quantities what is inside of the original ground level, what is outside that I want to exclude from the calculations. There is a way how to crop that surfaces to match with the original ground level?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Volume Calculations And Curve Tolerance Values

Jan 17, 2013

I have learned the hard way that Civil 3D has a Curve Tolerance value that is to be used when applying sample lines and computing average end cross section volume calculations along an alignment with a curve. How I discovered this was by double checking my self and using a straight alignment verses an alignment with a curve. When using the alignment with a curve the average end cross section volumes differ. I did some reading in Autocad help and it mentions that sometimes a curve tolerance value is needed when using curves and this value is changed in the compute or edit materials window. What is a curve tolerance?" The edit materials window prompts a user to enter a Degree value. How do I calculate this curve tolerance value? I assume it is related to one of the values of a curve.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Volume From Surfaces

Sep 6, 2012

i'm jumping into 3d late in life...playing with volumes. i've created surfaces from aerial surveys and have saved the surfaces as separate files. i would now like to run volumes of the two as they represent the same quarry site from different years. it appears (?) i need to have both surfaces listed in prospector to run volumes. each separate file has its own surface listed. question...how do i get (import?) the second surface drawing into one of the files so i have both listed and can run volumes? i see where i can create a surface from importing a .tin file...but i don't see how to export the surface as a .tin file.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Creating Two Surfaces Do Not Interact

Jun 14, 2013

I'm trying to create a surface under my 'existing ground' surface. There is shallow rock where one of our projects is located and using geotechnical data I want to create a 'rock surface' at the known rock elevations. I just want this surface for visual reasons and do not want it to interact with the existing ground or pipe network.

I have 4 places along the roadway where I know the rock elevations. I created new points around each known point with the same elevation so there would be more than just four points on the surface and so I could make it the width of the road allowance. But when I look back to my profile of the road, it shows the existing profile drop to the rock surface at each place that I created points for the rock elevation. Not sure how to make it so the existing ground surface doesn't pick up the new points I added for the rock elevations.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Creating Inside Masks On Surfaces

Sep 19, 2013

I'm modeling a couple different alternatives, and I want to make an inside mask on EG where my FG surface will be.

Is my workflow the problem, or are surface masks just buggy?

I've created three EG surfaces, EG-1, EG-2, and EG-3.  I pasted the dref'd EG into each one, so now I have three copies of EG, one for each design option.  Each surface is on its own layer.

I have three FG surfaces, one for each design, FG-1, FG-2, FG-3.  I want to use the outer border of each FG in turn to make an inside mask for its respective EG surface. I can make one, masking FG-1 out of EG-1.  When I move on and try to make the mask for FG-2 to mask EG-2, no mask is created. Is it not working because I pasted the same original EG into each of the three EG option surfaces? Do I need to promote the original dref'd EG and copy it two more times, so each mask is applied to a completely unique surface?

I need to show where floodwaters would get to at a specific elevation so that contour would be the easiest way if I can contour the surface with just 1 elevation. I don't want to have to create 0.1' contours all over the site and then remove all the extras.

So I opened up Civil3D in metric template and imported my drawing as I have not been given a ddata file with the co-ordinates. Unfortunately I am having trouble creating a surface between the existing points.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Creating Existing Profile From Survey Data

Nov 14, 2013

I am fairly new to the Civil side of AutoCAD, as I used to work primarily in Map.  I am working on a street rehab project in which I need to take survey points showing existing elevations (centerline, flowline, and top of curb) and show existing profiles in a profile view.  I have no problems setting up the profile view(s) or the centerline alignment, but I am having problems with creating the profiles themselves, and I have a two part question about them

Question 1: According to the user's guide, the correct way to set up an "existing" profile is by extracting it from a surface, but I don't have a surface to use.  In reading through the various profile types, the best way to set up what I want seems to be by using the profile layout tools, but the help says that a profile layout is supposed to be for a final "proposed" profile, not the existing.  Does this actually matter?  Will I be breaking Civil functionality by creating an existing profile using the profile layout tools?

Question 2: In reading through the profile layout tools, everything seems to be centered around PVI's.  Even using the "tangent tangent" method to add in points seems to only use the first and last point as controls, with everything in between treated as a PVI.  If you look at the documentation here, points one and four are treated as actual elevations, while curvature occurs at points 2 and 3.  In my case, since what I have is a series of actual points on a surface, each point should be an actual surface elevation with curvature occurring between points and not at them.  What method should I be using to input the points in the profile?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Creating Profile Along Lowest Point In Existing Ditch

Aug 21, 2012

In highway construction, I usually check for lowest ditch elevation and see how the existing drainage flows. Typically one would create or specify in CL profile creation with a 15m offset right and left which would then generate existing CL and 15m offset profiles in profile view. However, the 15m offset profile might not represent the lowest point in the ditch as the lowest elevation offset distance varies along the highway.

My question: Is there a way in civil 3D profile creation where it can automatically trace the lowest elevation in the ditch and plot it in profile view?
