AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Fly Through For Windfarm Project?
Mar 4, 2013
I need to produce a fly through for a windfarm project. I normally would do the 3d linework etc in Civil 3D and then export dxf data out to another package that I produce the 3D flythrough in and apply textures for soil, roads etc. in that package. I can then produce a decent flythrough in a few minutes.
I have tried some simple flythroughs in C3D but they seem very choppy and not very impressive (and take forever to process). I'm not particularly familiar with C3D for this type of use.
When creating the short cut folder you have the option of using a project template. Instead of browsing for it all the time , can a permanent path on a network be set to look for the project template everytime?
Anyway to disassociate a drawing from a shortcuts project? I have a drawing that I want to use in class to show people how to create data shortcuts but since it's already associated with a project, it doesn't work quite as simple as I would like it to.
Iv'e been using Land Desktop 2005 and 'am checking out a trial of 3D 2012. Needless to say I'm used to the 2005 format where there is simply a tab for Projects to create a new project or manage existing projects.
When I import points from an external project point database (LDD) which I do quite often to import points from 2008 to Civil 3d it works fine for me, but when a co-worker tries doing it from the same exact drawing just a different computer it does not work. Whe he tries to do it, a red "X" appears telling him there is some kind of error. VERY strange and I have no clue why????
I have a survey figure in plan view that I want to project to a profile. I have a projection style set, and the command settings use this style. When I project the figure to the profile, nothing shows up.
If I try it again, the command tells me that an object already exists in the profile and will update it. What am I doing wrong? What is the correct procedure to project these lines to a profile?
I ‘ve put some blocks (Cone penetration test) in a profile view. Then I created view frames and sheets. I tried to insert those blocks into the sheets with the 'Project objects to profile view' command. I get the message: “There are 10 objects outside the Profile view's station range and will therefore be ignored.”
My company has recently bought out a smaller firm. IT has setup everything through our "pipeline" so that there is a direct connection to both offices. The servers are all mapped pretty much identically and we are beginning to work on the same projects between the offices. However, this is putting a huge lag on the "pipeline" slowing down all the data going back and forth. Now they would like the Technicians to refrain from opening drawing files over the network.
So, I am wondering if the CLOUD is an option to handle this for our shared projects? Or Vault?

I have an existing alignment and a profile view with a profile of that alignment. I would like to offset this alignment to show the edges of roadway and add the existing ground profiles to the same profile view. The edge of roadway lines are 3D polylines and I use the 'project objects to profiile view' to to create the profile. I select use existing surface for elevations and it does, however, it only picks up elevations where the 3d polyline has verticies. So where I have a tangent section that crosses a stream it does not show the stream because there are no verticies at that location. If I create a whole new profile view and select the line it picks up elevations all along the polyline.
I have created a new data shortcut project folder, i have the data shortcut set to the drive & the correct project, yet i cannot associate the drawing to the project. Even when I do attempt to set it to the correct project, it will not register. I have tried the "associate current dwg to project", as well as the "associate multiple dwgs to project", yet it will not recognize it at the top of the screen.

Project objects to profile view... got it. No problems selecting individual survey points or survey figures and projecting to profile view. Is there a way to project a entire point group to a profile. I have a point group created for the large number of points to be projected. Next I right click on the point group and click "select'. Then go to Project objects to profile view. Nothing...
This process works for the survey figures, but not the point groups! In prospector tab go to survey > figures then select CTRL + each figure to project then VIOLA' the whole group of figures are projected.
Is this limited to graphical selections only? If so, is there a workaround to generate a graphical selection set from the point group.
Recently I upgraded to 2013 and I been having some issues with my survey DB, first of all I created a base data shortcuts project template folder with all my folders and a default Survey DB.
once I create my project, and import points to the default DB, I have no access to the Figure Properties. Is this feature, that worked in 11 & 12 now broken in 13? I have gone into the setting and copied a new files to the folder several times, to no avail, and there are no other versions of C3D on this machine.
So now that I have my points in the drawing, I go to translate them to my survey, generally I will utilize line in the drawing between field data, and platted data to translate and rotate to the platted lot or lots and the work from there on any calcs or changes. However, when my OSNAP toolbar is docked and locked and I go to select a point line the midpoint, I have no access to the OSNAPS. This also, worked in 11 & 12, but seems broken in 13.
Civil3d 2012 - is there a way to project standard autocad lines and curves to an existing surface to the lines and curves end up with the surface elevations? we are trying out that wants 3d lines exported in a dxf file. We have a surface and we have the lines...it's just that the linwork is all at 0 elevation.
When using the Associate Project to Current Drawing or Associate Project to Multiple Drawings command(s) where does this association data get stored? When using the Multiple Drawings option I do not see the save time/date being modified on the individual DWG's.
I also do not note any file being modified under the shortcut working folder which would contain associated drawing names. How does C3D "know" what project a file is associated with?
I need to create a subgrade surface for a landfill project. I have already created profiles and sections on a 200x200 ft grid along a baseline alignment that follows the center of the proposed landfill. In my profiles and section views I have drafted in my proposed subgrade elevations.
Is there any way to create a surface by selecting critical points along the profiles & sections? I would prefer not to use a grading group b/c the site is in excess of 200 Acres, and the grading tools tend to crash Civil 3D 2009 on large sites.
When I select an object to view in my profile, all I get is "0 objects selected". I have tried selecting several objects in plan top view, but get "0 selected". What is the "simple" solution that I am overlooking?
I am using C3D 2012. I my drawing I have 3D solid objects that I want projected into my roadway x-sections. When I use the menu command to "project objects to section views" and select "solids" I get the message "no objects to project". Are their different types of solid objects in autocad?
I'm using feature lines created from utilities line work to label utility locations on section views. To avoid selecting each individual section view, I'm using Profile & Section Views, Section views, Project Objects To Multiple Section Views. This works great. Labels are placed on the Sections Views all at once, just requiring a little clean up of label locations. However, there are feature lines for other purposes in the drawing, and these are all labeled at the same time. Any way to select which feature lines will be projected? I've been erasing the extra labels, which is still faster then placing one label at a time per section view.
I am trying to get the cut volumes for areas that are greater than 15ft of cut for my project. We know that we will be able to get the top 15 feet with heavy equipment but will be drilling and blasting anything greater than 15 feet of cut. This is a different pay item, with greater cost so we need to quantify it.
I've got a composite surface that graphically shows me the elevation bands so I can see the areas that are greater than 15 feet but I'm not sure how to quantify the volumes.
Currently using C3D 2012 with the volume dashboard extension. Have 2013 installed just haven't jumped over yet.
see attachment (object viewer capture). The top surface is my OG, the bottom surface is the bottom of excavation for a building. I want to project the perimeter of the building footprint up to the OG surface at a 1:5 slope. I remember in LDD the perimeter of a building, berm, dam, ditch...could be projected to the OG with specific slopes and then you could create a surface with the projected lines and do a volume calc. between the two. What is the procedure to do this in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012?
I have a file where there are mostly surfaces and gradings. But once again i ran into a similar problem - i cannot open the file anymore. It just stops loading and then Civil crashes.
Can try to open it and maybe use MAPCLEAN or AUDIT in hope it fixes anything?
Why do these things even keep happening, i do not understand at all.
I need to determine a limit of rock cut for a land development project. I have created surfaces for my Existing Grade and Top of Rock. Is there any way to determine the limit of rock cut within 25 ft of the existing ground, the volume of rock cut, and show the limit of rock cut on my plan view?
I could drop the Existing Grade elevations by 25 feet, but then how would I create a separate Surface from the intersection of the lowered Existing Grade surface and the Top of Rock Surface?
I'm trying to figure out how to make a skewed corridor region for a bridge project (just one assembly I need to skew) the rest of the corridor is split into regions, the approach slabs and bridge deck assemblies are at about a 30 degree angle to the alignment.
Is there a way to project just one feature line (or anything appropiate...polyline, 3d poly etc) into the sections group or profiles ?
The thing is that Projection tool, labels everything that's a Block, Point, 3d poly ...etc to the sections group.
And it puts all labels in the same layer.
My project theme requires to project forest limit on every section. This is appearing on the survey as a polyline along the road. Civil Engineer / Infrastructure of metropolitan transports [URL]
I need to project a crossing pipe onto a road centerline. I have water running down one side of the road 7' off the centerline of the road and sewer running down the other 8' off the centerline. There is storm drain running perpendicular across the road.
The sewer and the water are projected onto the centerline of road profile. When I draw the crossing pipes in that profile view and change the override, because it does not cross the centerline, it disappears from the profile view. How can I accurately show the crossing at the proper invert of the respective crossing without drawing the ellipses manually?
I have been trying to find the best/most efficient way to make a pavement grade plan for my current project. The only two ways that I know of are:
1) Home Tab->points->Create Points-Alignments->Measure Alignment then select my mainline alignment, enter a profile, enter an offset to create the points. Then assigned elevations of the points to my "pavement" surface.
2) Make lines perpendicular to your alignment (I used sample lines, exploded them to a block reference)->Make a feature line and snap at each 25' segment->Assigned elevations of the feature line to my "pavement" surface->used custom line and curve labels to label start segment z value.
My issue with option 1) is on my project there are multiple curves and I don't know of anyway that I can have the labels follow my alignment. I think the way the alignment labels work is if I would edit the label I would have to manually edit the angle and with multiple curves I don't think this would work the best.
My issue with option 2) is my project is roughly 1.75 miles long with 8 lanes and 12' shoulders, I would have to make roughly 4000 elevation points on my feature lines.
