AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Create A Subgrade Surface For Landfill Project
May 4, 2012
I need to create a subgrade surface for a landfill project. I have already created profiles and sections on a 200x200 ft grid along a baseline alignment that follows the center of the proposed landfill. In my profiles and section views I have drafted in my proposed subgrade elevations.
Is there any way to create a surface by selecting critical points along the profiles & sections? I would prefer not to use a grading group b/c the site is in excess of 200 Acres, and the grading tools tend to crash Civil 3D 2009 on large sites.

I just tried to create a subgrade surface using the base link. The surface turned out to be wrong because some of the points in the Lane Outside Super Layer Varying Width subassembly are uncoded. Everything I've looked at seems to be programming related (over my head). Do I need to download a composer for 2014? I didn't see one on the list for 2014.

I'm using Civil 2012 to create a surface for a landfill. I have UTM coordinates, and my elevations range from about 71m to 115m. When I create my surface using the points, I check the Surface Properties/Statistics, it appears the X,Y & Z coordinates have been scaled down by 3 decimal places. I'm using UTM coordinates to create the points.
Example:
Min elevation = 0.071m .... should be 71m
Min X = 481.510m etc. ... should be 481510.99 or something similar.
Units are set to meters.

I have a section of road that has super elevation from -6% to +6%. The asphalt layer (top green) supers from -6 to +6 but the base course (red) only goes from -4 to +6. I attached a sketch for some visual information.
What subassembly recommended for this scenario?
Is there a way I can set max values for the subgrade? Or an assembly where I can use superelevation for the top and for the subgrade?
I am using C3D 2012 but can use 2013 if it makes a difference.

Im currently using an addon for Civil 3D called Novapoint. It allows me to create 3D models of surfaces made out of 3d faces and easily models cut and fill 3d-models for me.
The only thing i need to create a cut and fill model is one or several ground surfaces (existing ground, earth layers, rock etc. whatever i need) and a closed polyline/3Dpolyline that represents the level I want my cut and/or fill model.
I enter the spcifications I want such as; earth cut angle, rock cut angle, fill angle, select which surfaces i want to include in the model calculation and select the polyline.Novapoint then calculates the cut/fill model from the surfaces to the polyline and models the different cut/fill angles and gives me the results in a 3d-face model and a specification of the volyme of rock cut, earth cut an fill.
1. Novapoint is quite unstable and crashes alot
2. You cant create profiles out of 3d faces
3. Novapoint does not automaticly combine the start surfaces with the modeled cut/fill surface
4. A large surface made out of 3d-faces demands alot of computer power
So I want to how I do the same that Novapoint does for me in Civil 3D? (I have access to Civil 3D 2007-2013 depending on which one you're using)I know I can take the 3Dfaces i created in Novapoint and make a surface in Civil 3D with them but I want to exclude Novapoint completely.

Civil3d 2012 - is there a way to project standard autocad lines and curves to an existing surface to the lines and curves end up with the surface elevations? we are trying out that wants 3d lines exported in a dxf file. We have a surface and we have the lines...it's just that the linwork is all at 0 elevation.

see attachment (object viewer capture). The top surface is my OG, the bottom surface is the bottom of excavation for a building. I want to project the perimeter of the building footprint up to the OG surface at a 1:5 slope. I remember in LDD the perimeter of a building, berm, dam, ditch...could be projected to the OG with specific slopes and then you could create a surface with the projected lines and do a volume calc. between the two. What is the procedure to do this in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012?

I work in both Microstation(PowerCivil) and Autodesk(C3d 2010) platforms, unfortunately not very proficient in either. We use both due to project requirements. I have no say in the format what-so-ever. Now to the point.. I am working on a project thats survey is a 2d .dgn however I am to create a model from this information (which happens to be just text spot elevations no intelligence attached) and supply it in C3d..Is this Possible ?? Or would it be easier to just do it in PowerCivil (I have made surfaces with 2d objects before with) and convert to .dwg upon completion ????

Any experience with the Tin Surface CreatebyCropping Function.
The specific stumbling block I have come across is the best way to deal with the database that is required to export the new cropped surface to as it has to be different from the current drawing. I don't actually need the cropped surface to be saved but need to be able to adjust elevations and extract the tin from it. The tin would then be used to generate a pregrade surface in the base drawing. Previously I had done this with non-destructive boundaries but I find the cropped surface to be more accurate.

I have two separate graded levees in my drawing. One has created a surface just fine, the other absolutely refuses to generate a surface. I've deleted the grading even the feature lines and re-did them. In my grading group I have automatic surface creation checked and the volume base surface checked. I show the surface in the prospector but there is nothing there. The one levee will show contour styles but this one ZIP!

I'm creating a containment dike around and island. I want the berm to tie down to the existing surface, then offset from that tie point 21' to the surface again. I can do an offset from Baseline, or a tie to an elevation in a profile. What I can't do is make the offset 21' from the tie location over an additional 21' to another tie point on a surface.

I am working in Civils 3D 2014 and I have a survey with points already on the correct elevation layer, I have tried creating a surface from this but it does not show up.
My process:
- I create a new drawing and insert a block (my topo survey) and click explode when I do this
- I create the surface by TIN and make sure I have the correct layer for the points that I am selecting
- Click ok
- Then go into that surface and turn on all layers and refresh - still nothing
- I also made sure that my surface style was 1m contours so I would definately see this.

I have created a contour layer in MAP and need to bring the data into Civil (to create and EGL surface) which I usually I do via an alter properties query.
There is the Create Surface from GIS data in 2014 but this requires shp files so the two questions I have are:
Can the contour layer be output as shp files (and if so how)?
If yes, is this easier/more efficient than my current workflow?

I'm trying to replicate a dump surface from a cad file, but this one is rather different from what i'm used to (more simple and poligonal).
This one is curved and the top of the platform has inclinations has the picture shows.
I'm having trouble on finding the best way to aproach this dump surface. I tried to start from point 2 with the curved feature line and grade back 2% till EG and then grade forward 10% till it reaches point 3 at elevation (900) , but when i grade forward the sides obviosly dont hit my EG.

I use RocTek for cut/fil calculations, but the program is old and basic, I'm trying to transition to Civil 3D 2012 right now. Typically I create "no work zones" around my building footprints, so that I can do a more detailed take-off in those areas for over-excavations and that sort of thing. Right now I'm using Civil 3D to create an existing surface, a proposed surface, and then a volume from between the two. I thought if I just traced my proposed contours over the existing within the building footprint that I would get what I was looking for. However, analysis of the cut/fill volume shows that there are still some changes being made around the edges of the building.
Is there a specific way to make a proposed surface, but leave parts of the existing surface untouched?
See attached photo. The upper middle portion of the screen is where the building is (forgot to turn on layer).

I would like to create surface from contours and extract points (with value) from on it. I had contours in my drawing; each major and minor contours are single polyline with elevation (Z value).
If I create surface form CONTOUR, some polylines (major or minor) are not included in to surface. After the creation of surface, I tried to erase the existing contour lines (Polyline) from drawing but the surface will be disappearing.
If I create the surface from ''DRAWING OBJECTS'', I'm not able to select the polylines (attachment 01) .

I've created a surface into Civil3D by importing a LandXML file created from contours in a .dgn file. When I create profile views for the alignments, the elevations are shown negative (-500 to -20) where as they have to be in between 500 to 670. Also when I run the surface elevation analysis, all the elevation are shown in between 1000 to 2200 inches as shown in the figure attached.
Am I missing any conversion or some settings when importing the surface.
