AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Corridors Surfaces And Intersections - Move Each Curve And Tangent Separately
Mar 16, 2012
Heres the issue;
I created my main corridor which is a 4 lane arterial with ditching on both sides targeted to my prelim surface. On my main corridor i have several intersections and approaches which i created intersections for and set the targets so they are correct, i also created secondary roads for all intersections. Now that it is visually correct there is a few things i would like to do.
1) Combine all intersections to my main corridor and create surface for adjusted volumes.
2) Raise combined corridor and intersections to adjust cuts / fills so that all attached intersection and adjacent corridors adjust with the main corridor.
Do i have to go to my main corridor profile and move each curve and tangent separately, then check all other profiles and intersection to insure everything has been adjusted?

I've created a T intersection and have created the surface for the T corridor and the entering side road. The surfaces appear correct. When I create a surface for the main road, which has been split into two regions, the surface goes thru the T corridor. How do I create a surface that simply goes up to the T intersection and picks up again after the T intersection?

What is the advantage of creating a seperate corridor for an intersection? Doing so requires leaving gaps in the road corridors at the intersections which creates a mess in the surface triangulation through the gap. I know we can clean it up by creating a composite surface and pasting all the pieces together but how tediious that is!
I was wanting to keep the intersections as seperate corridors because if we add them to the road corridor we end up with numerous duplicate baselines which makes editing and data management a nightmare. This whole process is a huge time consumer. I can't understand how Autodesk expects DOT's to adopt this software with this workflow.

I created a simple roundabout in Civil3D with the intent on visualizing the corridor in 3DS Max Design using the Civil View plugin. The corridor rendered complete in Civil 3D, but there are large corridor gaps in Civil View. They all appear to be at the location of corridor baseline boundaries. Obviously this is a non-starter, as 3DS Max is supposed to improve the visual quality, not reduce.
Attached are some sample images of the roundabout in Civil3D and in 3DS Max Design.
I am using Civil 3D 2012 and 3DS Max Design 2012.

I've changed my workflow slightly and have created 4 junctions via the wizard but kept them all in the same Corridor (previously I kept each one in its own corridor).
I now need to create the formation surfaces for the corridor (in the way I always have done it) but only one of the junctions has a surface. I then added a show boundary and the "missing" surfaces appeared but with many connecting triangles and superfluous triangles in the curved areas.
How to get a nicely shrink wrapped surface or is it a matter of brute force removal of triangles etc?

I've recently started working with Civil2012/2013 (bit the bullet you might say).
I attended a course on civil about a year ago but it didn't cover all the bases.
My question: stripping calculation, is there a way fro civil to perform it automatically?
One way to calculate stripping (manually) is after i have all the tin volume surfaces, is to show the fill areas in the volume tables and then do the calculation myself.

I have a mainline corridor which is intersecting with a side road corridor that is curving towards the mainline. After the PT of the curve, the two alignments are parallel and I am using an offset assembly here for the sections. What is the best way to handle the area where the two corridors are coming together. As far as I've been able to tell, I cannot use an offset assembly through the curve. There will be a ditch between the two that needs to be shown someway or another. I've attached a screen shot.

I need to lable the delta of a PI in an alignment where one segment is an arc and the following is a non-tangent line.
Geometry points don't offer delta and Tangent Intersections won't label at PCs and PTs.
Is there an expression that can be used?

How can you add the chord bearing, chord length, and tangent to an alignment table with the curve data in it? I have the length and direction but cannot figure out why the others will not load and update in the chart. I am using Autocad Civil 3D 2012

So a friend created a model using zbrush and exported several different *.OBJ files. I imported those to maya and added shaders. They all fit correctly together when imported.
some of those obj files required me to do a mesh->combine. so now it appears that not every item has the same reference point so that when I move or scale the entire item, some of the objects move seperately. I think it is only the ones I had to combine.
I tried freeze transformations, but when doing that, some of the objects lost their scale settings and still didnt move together as one unit.

I have come up with a parabolic curve from a 'Sag Chart' program for calculating wire sag between Utility Poles. I now need to place this curve into my Profile that has the poles laid out in it. I need to make the curve Tangent at each attachment point between two poles. The best I can do as of now is eyeball it in there which will get me the sag distance pretty closly but as any Autocad user knows if it isnt exactly aligned it will drive you nuts. I made a rough sketch of what im trying to do.

Is there a way to use the curve driven (rectangular) pattern referencing two tangent curves (an arc and a tangent line). I'd like to be able to create this pattern of slots in one pattern, otherwise I'll have to make two cut features at each end and use one pattern for the straight and another for the curve.

I have a roller pin which follows a certain path using transitional constrain in an assembly. A box is attached to the roller pin which move along with it. My problem is that I want one face of the box to be tangent to the path which the roller pin is following so that the box moves according when it is on the curve. I have attached the file with the message.

We are making road , it has intersections with simple roads wich leads to forest or a fields or to a private territory. We have 60 of those intersections (crossroads) , if we would start making them all with intersection wizzard it would take a lot of time... , maybe there is simpler way to make such an easy crossings ? ( all of those crossroads are same type same geometry, the only difference is location)

I went forward designing intersection profiles with limited survey and simply made an educated guess for the secondary roads pgl tie in point. I have received updated survey and when I move the profile end point to meet existing grade it adds another pvi effectively holding the profile grade I set preliminarily. I'm keeping the lock point. Is there something with the return/ offset profiles preventing this edit? What is the proper work flow?

Using the Best Practices, different components in their own DWG files, all brought together in a production sheet where I can place the labeling for that sheet. I can add labels for Surfaces, Alignments, Pipe networks, through the Xref(s). Evidently this was not extended to Intersection Objects.
What I'm doing now is creating a new Intersection at each street intersection just so I can get a label which shows the station of each alignment at the intersection. Is there a better way to do this?

I have a proposed road with a varying curb line. There is a minimum 5 foot tree lawn between the back of curb and sidewalk. I have used a lane transition and attached it to an alignment to get the curb to follow. Also used the urban sidewalk with buffer widths.
How do I connect the back of curb to the sidewalk and keep the sidewalk in the same offset from the baseline. In the attachment, I have used a zero inside boulevard width and slide the sidewalk over from the curb line in my assembly. Will this work?

what is the benefit of using corridors rather than simply using all of the things that go into a corridor--alignments, surfaces, profiles, sections, assemblies (which I don't understand yet either)--independently?
Is it just for design visualization? Does it have any benefit for developing construction plans?

I'm designing a single 2% cross flow blke path. I wanted to reverse the cross flow so I created two corridors, one flowing to the left and one flowing to the right along the same tangent centerline. I want to add a 50 foot warp transition in between them. I'n not sure how to do that. I thought of the intersection design but that won't work.

Changing the curb return radius after the intersection has been created. I am able to go back to the curb return parameters dialog and enter a different value, but once I hit Enter or OK the value reverts back to the one I orginally used.
So it looks like I have to delete the intersection object and re-start the wizard from scratch. Not that it's a big deal, just thought there might be a way to make the change once the intersection is built.

I have ran an analysis and SSA gave me Error 607 on the report. It says "Inlet A9 gutter capture curve is not a valid curve."
A couple things I did different from the video lectures...
I selected user define for the Tc to figure out Q. i computed those manually.
For the Inlets I have selected Maximum Capture Cutoff.
There are some inlets in this model I created that do not capture 100% of the flow so i created conveyance links to account for the bypass flow. Not sure why is not recognizing the Curve?

I have a decent understanding of how corridors work, and I am able to generate material volume tables for earthworks, I can edit my corridor and everything is all synced up as far as I can tell. Where I am having trouble is removing topsoil (with a volume generated) and then using that new 'section' to calculate cut and fill.
The project is a new road for a subdivision. Topsoil is to be stripped only within the limits of the back of curb, and anywhere the fill is greater than 300mm (a foot).
What I was trying was to use the stripping topsoil subassembly, with a foreslope of 0:1 and a width based on my corridor. I would have this subassembly on the let and right, and the attachment point would be the crown of the road. Then I would create a surface using the stripping feature lines and the stripping link to calculate the topsoil removed. Then I would use this surface as the Base to compare for my Earthworks.
The problem I was having is the Topsoil surface wouldn't follow the actual topsoil feature line in the sections, and would get some pretty wonky stuff happening with regards to the TIN lines of this surface. Flipping the TIN lines seems very difficult to do properly and efficiently.
