AutoCAD Inventor :: Curve Driven Pattern - Multiple Tangent Curves?
Oct 22, 2012
Is there a way to use the curve driven (rectangular) pattern referencing two tangent curves (an arc and a tangent line). I'd like to be able to create this pattern of slots in one pattern, otherwise I'll have to make two cut features at each end and use one pattern for the straight and another for the curve.

Is it possible to have a tangent constrain on multiple curves?
see enclosed rough sketch, i would like the curved free end or the arm to be in constant contaced with the wavey top line on the other part, the wavey line is constructed as 3 curves but i can only get the tangent constrain to apply to one of the curves.
i would like the tangent constraignt to move between the curves so the part stays in constant contact with the wavey line. this is just a mess about sketch i suppose a real world instance will be a wheel following a shaped cam plate.

I have created a bin/vat/tub using sheet metal. I started with a contour flange. I then copied the sketch and pasted into a new sketch off the flange for a contour roll feature. Then a flange, roll, flange, roll, flange and roll. My trouble starts at the last flange. I'm trying to construct the flange exactly as I have created the features before. I set the distance, select the profile (it shows the flange on the screen), hit apply and that's when my message shows up. "Non-tangent curves found in path: flat pattern cannot be correctly created. Edit sketch and add constraints to the curves. The sketch is fully constrained according to the lower right hand corner and the auto constrain button.

I would like to create an equation driven curve with inventor. I have no problems plotting the function in a plotter, however, inventor won't accept my equation. It gives me the error message, saying: "The equation contains unit errors". I'm using the explicit equations.That's the bare equation:
"y=sqr(2)*16.5/2/sqr(pi)*sqr(arccos(1-2*x/50)-(sin(2*arccos(1-2*x/50))/2))"
I modified it, inserting variables which I defined also in inventor, leading to this:
"sqrt(2)*height/2/sqrt(PI)*sqrt(acos(1-2*t/length)-sin(2*acos(1-2*t/length))/2))"
But both equations are not accepted by inventor due to unit errors. In this design, I'm using the metric system, millimeters, so I don't understand why and how I have to redefine this for the equation in order to get it working.

If my memory serves correctly CATIA used to have a feature pattern type that allowed for the selection of two sketches (or something along these lines, my memory is fuzzy). One sketch contained the feature profile, and the other contained points where you wanted the patterned features to plop out at. Is there any similar function in IV?
In case there's another way to accomplish what I'm trying to do, I'm drawing a piece of roll formed sheetmetal with a crap load of slots with non-uniform spacing. I would really prefer to not have to create a sketch and draw all these slots. Especially when there's not even a legitimate slot command. I could probably draw one and then copy it around a bunch of times,

__Is there a way to 'merge' multiple curves into a single curve?
By this I mean I have file with 2-12 curve layers - I wanted to 'merge' the curves so that I can end up with a single curve with the attributes of many. Maybe is there a script that would do this?

I am used to drafting surveys using Eagle Point Coordinate Geometry & Boundary Survey & I am now moving over to C3D, & I am trying to reproduce a boundary survey in C3D 2010, when it comes to Tangent & Non Tangent curves there does not appear to be any routine that allows you to create them in logical sequence or otherwise from the geometrical info provided on paper maps i.e. Radius, Delta Angle & Length, are there any survey techs on here that have been able to resolve this issue?

I would like to use a sketch as the basis for a rectangular pattern which is set up to use the curve length for both directions of the rectangular pattern so that when I update my rectangle in a sketch, the pattern automatically adjusts to the new sketch. I have sketched a rectangle, and used one leg of the rectangle to establish the direction and length of one dimension of the array.
However, when I try and choose the Direction 2, my only options are the entire rectangle or faces- I can no longer select other and choose a single side of the rectangle.
I was able to accomplish what I wanted by using two sketches, with the second sketch simply projecting one leg from the first sketch. Using one sketch just seems inherently safer than trusting projected geometry.Is there a way to accomplish this with one sketch instead?

I have come up with a parabolic curve from a 'Sag Chart' program for calculating wire sag between Utility Poles. I now need to place this curve into my Profile that has the poles laid out in it. I need to make the curve Tangent at each attachment point between two poles. The best I can do as of now is eyeball it in there which will get me the sag distance pretty closly but as any Autocad user knows if it isnt exactly aligned it will drive you nuts. I made a rough sketch of what im trying to do.

I need to lable the delta of a PI in an alignment where one segment is an arc and the following is a non-tangent line.
Geometry points don't offer delta and Tangent Intersections won't label at PCs and PTs.
Is there an expression that can be used?

Heres the issue;
I created my main corridor which is a 4 lane arterial with ditching on both sides targeted to my prelim surface. On my main corridor i have several intersections and approaches which i created intersections for and set the targets so they are correct, i also created secondary roads for all intersections. Now that it is visually correct there is a few things i would like to do.
1) Combine all intersections to my main corridor and create surface for adjusted volumes.
2) Raise combined corridor and intersections to adjust cuts / fills so that all attached intersection and adjacent corridors adjust with the main corridor.
Do i have to go to my main corridor profile and move each curve and tangent separately, then check all other profiles and intersection to insure everything has been adjusted?

How to curve a piece of sheet metal over the outside curved edge of the attached part. I can do it the old fashioned way but was wondering if it could be done in sheet metal which would give me the flat pack automatically (that way there is less chance for errors). There are several of these baffles joined together by a spine and the sheetmetal will eventually go over all of these, and have a few modifications to shape the end profile.
The outer curve is a spline which has changing radius and hence to use a contoured roll would be rather difficult and time consuming (there are also some flat sections at each end of the curves as well).
Autodesk Inventor Professional Student 2013 is the version I'm using.

I have a Hole that cuts through 2 solid bodies, a gasket and a cover plate. I want to pattern the hole in BOTH solids at the same time, but the pattern feature dialog box will only let me select one solid at a time. I could pattern the hole in one solid before projecting to the other, but the quantity of the holes can change. When the quantity of the holes changes only the holes from the initial pattern are projected. For instance if I have 10 hole initially and it increases to 12 the 2 new holes do not project to the second solid body.

How to sort curve table data by parcel and then curve length? Out here in Oregon, one of the standard ways of defining a curve table is to show the length of curve and have each curve in the parcel grouped together.
I have not figured out a way to do this in C3D. At one point, Sinc had started working on the issue for us, but I don't think he ever got anywhere with it (or at least it didn't get into his add on.

ONce upon a time you could move your cursor over the image and it would show on the curves curve what that value was of the point your cursor was over.
Hope that makes sense. This was very useful for deciding exactly where on the curve you needed to make adjustments to affect a particular tone.
Its gorrrn, like a caribu. OR can I just not find it?

I want to creat a driven dimension that I can use as a reference dimension in another part. Is there an easy way to do this without creating a new sketch, going into a previous sketch, making a long function based on other dimensions, etc.? For instance, just like the measure tool, but it stores the measurement.

I have an assembly I've put together in Inventor 2011. I tried to make an adaptive spring to use with a shock that goes in a car. I'd like the spring to change size as the shock extends and contracts.
I went through the process of creating an adaptive spring, and it worked, but I could only change the length of the spring by using the "Drive Constraint" feature, which only allows me to adjust the spring when I'm using the "Drive Constraint" menu. It plays like a movie. What I want is a part that just moves like you would expect when you push/pull the ends of the shock. I don't want to have to drive it like a movie.
So then I thought that I could just simulate a spring by making a series of rings (toroids). I could constrain the bottom ring and top ring to the shock geometry and then have the other rings position themselves according to the distance between the top and bottom rings.
SO, I have 5 rings. The bottom ring is grounded the top ring has a Limit Constraint that sets the top ring anywhere between 3 and 7 inches above the bottom ring.
How do I create a driven dimension on an assembly that will automatically update the distance between the top and bottom ring?
I would like to call that dimension "HEIGHT", and then I could use parameters to set the middle ring a distance (HEIGHT/2) above the bottom ring, I could set the ring below the middle to (HEIGHT/4), and I could set the ring above the middle to (HEIGHT*3/4).
I should then be able to move the upper ring up and down and the other rings reposition themselves automatically to keep even spacing between the rings on either side.
I tried making a sketch in the assembly and using the "Project Geometry" function to add the location of the upper and lower rings to the sketch. I then used the "Dimension" function to create a driven dimension between the upper and lower rings. When I finished the sketch the other rings all updated exactly as anticipated, but when I moved the top ring the projected outline did NOT move, so the other rings did not continue to update.
lease do NOT link me to adaptive coil video tutorials or explain how driven dimensions work when making parts. I am not looking for that, I am looking for how to create driven dimensions between two placed components in an ASSEMBLY.

I have a parent assembly that contains multiple sub assemblies, two of which need to synchronize with each other.In the parent assembly, I have created a user form that controls the sizes and quantities of all the different sub assemblies.
Sub assembly 1 contains a bracket for supporting 4 rows of pipes.Based on the width selected from the main parent assembly, the length of this bracket can vary.
The spacing of the 4 mounting positions is also determined from the length of the bracket.Sub assembly 2 is an assembly containing all the pipes.The pipes are spaced apart to suit the bracket using a component pattern, and it is this distance that I want to control from the parent assembly.This is just one of the basic scripts I've tried.
Pipe_Spacing=Parameter("SubAssembly1:1", "Pipe_Spacing_A")
Parameter("Piping assembly:1", "Pipe_Spacing_B")=Pipe_Spacing
Pipe_Spacing_A is the spacing of the bracket
Pipe_Spacing_B is the component pattern in the piping assembly
Pipe_Spacing is the parameter in the parent assembly to be driven by the bracket parameters.
I have very little iLogic experience & have being learning as I go along with this project.My best guess is that the code can't loop back on itself. On a slightly different note, I have also noticed that the sub assemblies don't update properly.
If I adjust the width to X and regenerate the model, some of the sub assembly updates. To fully update, I have to go back into the user form, change the size to Y & then change it back again to X and then regenerate.

You cannot make a dimension driven, nor can you make a line construction or a centerline and you can't change a sketch point into a center point. Do I have some setting wrong?
