AutoCAD 2010 :: Example Drawing - Connection Between A Window And Wall
Nov 15, 2012
I am looking for an example autocad drawing of the connection between a window and a wall. In other words, a drawing which shows how the window is attached to the wall.
Does not matter what kind of window, materials etc.

I know there is a command for making a hole on a wall or a facade without compromising the finishes on the wall.
eg:i have a wall now drawn out, with all the details of the wall done, but i realise now have to make a window out of the wall i have hatched, but i do not want to create a rec and trim it. as i may have to change the window position again.

Sometimes, when I have two or more drawings open in the same instance of AutoCAD, another tab opens up on the Windows Taskbar. Here's the scenerio; I have two drawings open. On the task bar, Autocad's icon shows two drawings open. Somewhere while drawing, AutoCAD will start bogging down, especially when switching drawings. On the Window's Taskbar, it will now show three drawings open. Two of which will be the same drawing. There will only be two drawings open. The drawing which is currently on top for editing will be the one that shows up twice. If I change to the other drawing, it takes a really long time to swap. Sometimes, it will sit there for a minute and then swap back to the other first drawing on it's own. I try going back to the second drawing again, and the same thing happens again. The only way to stop this from happening is to completely shut down AutoCAD and restart it. I think it has something to do with the ribbon. And I also notice it more often after doing a CopyBase, but not always.

I'm attempting to create a wall style that has 2 components, a framed wall and a brick veneer. What I would like to do is have this wall react a certain way when I insert a window. Basically, I don't want the window to cut into the brick veneer, only the framing.
I have attached my attempt so far, and I have not figured out how to get the window to only cut the framed portion.

I have a drawing that will not open the objectscale window (annotative scale add/delete). I either select from the right-click menu, or type in objectscale, and nothing happens. I opened a new drawing and the function worked fine in that one, just not in my existing drawing...

An example is when I'm drawing a box, line etc and attempt to type "@5,-5", AutoCAD somehow jumps to a window on the side and if I don't notice will restore the window I'm working in and not complete the command I typed ("@5,-5" in this case). If I do notice in time, then I have to pres ESC about 3-4 times, which will then have me back on the command line with the text "@5,-" already typed (as if that was were I paused while typing??). The attached picture shows the dialog box on the top left, and the command line as if I've only typed "@", when after pressing ESC as mentioned the full "@5,-" text becomes visible on the command line?
Also, as a note: I've already ruled out that I'm pressing other keys that could possibly cause this...
I'm running AutoCAD (Mechanical) 2011

My AutoCAD 2012 installation has been doing this for a while, but I don't remember it always doing this:
After I close a drawing (if it is the last drawing open), by using either the "close" command or by clicking the "x" on the window, instead of going to the generic gray-stripe background it just shows what the drawing looked like before close. This keeps messing with my head, as I think AutoCAD has just stopped responding.
If you look closely, though, you can see that the "AutoCAD" and "Autodesk" labels appear on the drawing, but I don't immediately notice this because my drawings are more complex than the sample drawing I've attached.
See images below.
However, when I manually resize the application window (either by restoring or maximizing, or by draging the window edge, the application window refreshes to show the proper generic gray-stripe background.
System specifications: AutoCAD 2014 64-bit SP1, Windows 7 64-bit SP1, Intel Core i7-2600K, AMD FirePro V4900
16GB RAM, Crucial M4 SSD, 3 Dell Monitors (2 30" 2560x1600 & 1 20" 1200x1600)

In AutoCAD Architecture 2012: when we insert standard windows in the wall, we usually get a wall break. After changing window size to small (2’ high), this wall break disappears in the plan, but still have it on isometric or perspective view.

Why would a window not go into a wall?
I have a client who is having this issue - when I open the file it works fine for me.
Is there a system variable or setting that could cause this?

How to reposition window within wall? i have a window put into my basement wall with footing as shown. unfortunately, the window aligns on the symmetry line of footing itself (as i believe the footing is taken as the overall wall thickness). i want the window to be aligned on the wall/cavity thickness only.
i prefer to have it default in this window or wall style rather than playing around with anchors and other ,,reposition tools'' for each and single window in my basement plan.

How do I set a Window Assembly to be flush to the outside of a Wall? I'm expecting an embarrassingly simple answer, but I really cannot figure this. the infills and the mullions move out 7-1/16", but the two frame elements just will not be moved.

I use ACA 2012 for residential design - I have a wall style, 2x4 stud w/ 1.5" airspace and 3.5" brick (modified from the stock styles) - but whenever I insert a window, it makes it as wide as the wall (9") when it should be only the depth of the stud wall (2x4 or 2x6) - How can I fix this?

Is there a way to create a window that slides into a pocket in a wall the way a pocket door does?
(I'd define a pocket door style for it but I'd like it to appear as a window for tags and schedules.)

I'm trying to send a set of drawings for my consultant. They will be using it as a background for their mechanical and electrical drawings and they only need the 2d information. They want to be able to explode them and remove any items they don't need before switching all the layer colours to grey.
When they get the drawings and explode them the doors and walls explode onto the correct layer but the colour of those object and lines are now set to the actual color of the layer rather than colour "bylayer". The line actually take on the colour of the layer in the properties dialogue box. Therefore when they change the colour of the layer to grey the doors remain 'red'.
I would like the doors/walls to stay on their respective layers...AND their colour to be BYLAYER when exploded.

In Autocad Architectural 2012 if I typed 'wall' I would get several options for walls. If I selected 'A' (add) it would bring up the properties panel and draw the necessary walls. This does not work in Architectural 2013. Where to I access the wall/window/door pallet?

I can't put my nested window family in a curved wall. Where the problem could be situated? It has to be a normal straight window so I use my nested window families from other projects. I compared my NWF(nested window family) with the ones autodesk provides with revit but I don't find the difference. The NWF from autodesk work in a curved wall.

In the file attached, there's a wall roof window joint showing the following problem: It seems like the window interferes with the joint, so that it isn't right, if the window is not situated higher than the roof slab. In the picture, the joint on the left side is correct, but the ones on the left are incorrect.

I would like to cut a void into the wall of a host window family. When I place a void in the family, it does not cut thought the wall.
I tried making the void on a plane perpendicular and parallel to the wall plane. I dont know if this has anything to do with how voids work. But its not working. I also dont have an 'opening' element in the window family.

I'm working on a small project: a 2 story single house.
There are some curtain walls in the house. Also, a sliding glass door within the curtain wall. I want the same window schedule covers both the regular fixed windows and curtain walls.
Is it better to convert the curtain walls to regular windows? Or there are other better options?

Is it possible to use something like a parameter that would allow you to enter a width in the element properties window of the selected wall(s)?
we would like to have a generic wall (outline only) that the width can be changed per wall for layout purposes, then the walls will be selected & changed later to an actual wall with known materials.

I am working on my first real Revit project. i need to modify a windows family and in particular i want to change the axis of insertion of the window in the wall. I mean... my window should be placed on the outer edge of my wall. i try to unlock the dimensions that define its position and then i lock the dimension in the new position; the window seems to be ok but only in the RFA file. When i imported it in my project file, the windows moves in the wrong way in my real wall.

I'm drawing individual guest rooms for a hotel that I would like to xref into the main floor plans. The walls between the rooms are 8" wide. I would like to only show half the width of those walls (4") so when xrefed againt another guest room in the main floor plan, the total width would be 8". But I would like for the one side of the 4" wall to appear as a centerline on the individual plans, but at the same time, be able to shut the centerlines off on the main floor plans. I'm new to ACA 2012 and perhaps I'm going about this in the wrong way.........?????

But when I am trying to explode all the lines the 3.jpg is view before I explode all the lines the after the 4.jpg is the view after explode. The wall have space in the middle.

I have a brick wall, and an object which I wanted to essentially bust through the wall so that all that was left was a wall with a hole shaped like the object. All I have done right now is added some cracks coming out of the object, but I just made the object black and put it on top of the wall, so it doesn't look like a hole, more like a sticker. Anyway, any suggestions on how to make it more realistic looking? I was thinking I might need to somehow randomize the outline of the object to make it look like it cracked through the wall,

In AutoCAD LT 2013, whenever I open a drawing I previously created and stored, it opens with a small amout of the bottom of the drawing below the bottom border of the window. Repeatedly I have tried positioning the drawing the way I would like it to open then saving that configuration. That's how I always did it in AutoCAD 2000, my previous version. Regardless how many times I go thru that process, all drawings always open centered horiz'ly but with the bottom bit of the drawing below the bottom border of the window.
I constantly look for a "Center Drawing In Window" button, or "Save Current View" button and so far have found nothing I recognize as such or even close. Am I looking for something that doesn't exist? Am I not understanding how it works? In the grand scheme it really doesn't matter because it's simple to pan the drawing into a fully readable scene - but I am still curious.
