I'm a beginner/intermediate level 3ds max user and I've recently starting to model what I love the most - sci-fi stuff, more specifically, space ships. So, I've been browsing the net looking for models done..Now, there's one very specific question in mind: does a ship (say, a very creative and complex concept) has to be one single object, or can it be a group of linked objects? Notice that I have in mind game development. URL....
I have a topo map in max, and I'm trying to raise and sink parts of it to make sidewalks and parking lots. My thought was to import line objects from dwg files, shape merge them onto the terrain, change the material number, then extrude. The problem is that shape merge doesn't maintain the correct shape.
I've made sure that I'm in orthographic mode, looking straight down on the surface, but anywhere there's a curve it messes things up. Circles become irregular ellipses. Arcs become more convex or concave. Where I'm shape merging two different objects at different times, objects that had lined up, the curves are now different and they either overlap or no longer touch.
I'm assuming that it's because my terrain mesh is too complex, but I'm not sure how to get around that.
Typically a door hadle lever comprising initially circular geometry at the rose (fixing point) with round bar (x place)geometry up to and around the initial lever bend. Then the lever elongates in section and curves along a y plane and possible twists along its sweep path. Ive tried mass and create solid using a path with worlplane aligned geometry with fail every time, Also tried in face based generic. The problem is a bit abstract in that only trying to take an image in a manufacturers catalog of a manufactured component and recreate the design phase. Can this be done (sucessfully) simply. If only there were a way to do a swept bleand withj sveral profiles on the path. Hosting circles and then curved profiles is not working for me - cant get uniformity in the way the circles sweep into the curved parts
In sub object mode, I have some vertex selected, I would like to set this vertex to a specific position in space.
For exemple, In the picture attached, I want that each 4 vertex set to 0 in x position in one command (I don't want set to 0 individually each vertex).
I have a model rigged with The Setup Machine and The Face Machine and a single material is applied to each of them. Not sure if the above is relevant, but when I tested this in a clean scene with just a sphere, everything was fine.
I then select a few faces and apply a new material to those faces. I smooth the mesh and the UVs are smoothed and the different materials appear where they should be. If I set the divisions on the polySmoothFace node to 2 or more the materials seem randomly placed across the mesh. The Uvs however, are smoothed correctly. So I then have to reassign the materials to the correct faces.
If I do one smooth mesh, then another separate smooth mesh, the materials are placed correctly.
Is this a bug or do you think something is wrong with my setup?

I have teached myself working with autocad version 2004 so maybe its not the right way of drawing but I draw 3D objects using solids!
In the past I could take or put dimensions on this solids to print and pass on to colleagues but on our new 2013 version I seem incapable of doing this I can not select a point on a solid and continuously get the message invalid point!!!
working in 3D modeling space using parametric linear! what am I doing wrong? or is it an setting that I need to change?
So I am trying to use "fill hole" for this empty space on my mesh but it isn't working. I know I can figure out another solution to this problem but I want to know why it won't work.
First of all, when I double click the edge around the hole it doesn't just select the hole, it selects a huge ring that goes around the whole head for some reason (I'm attaching a picture).
Then when I select the edges around the hole one by one and select "fill hole" nothing happens and I get a message at the bottom of the screen that says "polycloseborder2" (I am also including a pic of this).
1) Is there a way when packing UVs to force 3DS to use the entire 0-1 space? There always seems to be padding regardless of if it is set to 0 in the software. If I'm using a tilable texture this creates seams since it doesn't go all the way to the end of the UV space. I have to manually snap the vertex points on the UV to the corners of the 0-1 space.
2) Is there a way to have 3DS keep the size of the grid in the UV editor? If I set the UV grid size to something specific it always resets it back to .5 if I go back in at another point or for a different object.
As CAD administrator at my company, which is in the process of implementing Inventor/Vault, I am quite sold on the Layout Modeling/Multi-body part modeling functionality that Inventor supports. Among other things I believe there is a large payoff in assembly stability and simplicity. However, this workflow is very different from the conventional methods of modeling individual parts and manually constraining assemblies. URLs....
In 2012 Autocad, cannot change from model space to paper space, or paper space to model space without locking up in several drawings.

I can log into another user's computer and open the file fine. But when i use my computer or a brand new computer fitting all Auto CAD specs, it locks up. When I plot I have to reset my settings to the PTE standards every time.
I now get CAD errors when CAD is not even open. Also VTPSUHM barely works. I generally have to restart my computer several times to get it to work.
after discovering zones and the space evaluation tool I wonder whether it is possible to customise the XLS output further by also reading out information from a property set attached to the space?
The office standard is to have a property set attached to each space that defines a room number (which is the level ID plus a number, say G-01), the area and the space name.
We used to simply schedule the areas with a schedule table. That only gives us net rooms, no subtotals per department (or say per flat) and no grandtotal. So we got as far as using zones grouping the spaces in each flat.
Now I need an area schedule XLT template that also displays the room number from the space's property set and the schedule grouped in a fashion that I get subtotals per flat (=my zones) in another column and a grandtotal.Playing with the Space evaluation tool I seem to only ever get Room/ zone names and their areas.
I am a landscape architect trying to xref in civil backgrounds. I have noticed twice now from two different civil firms that some of the civil symbols (dynamic blocks) are having visibility issues in paper space. No the viewport layers are not turned off or frozen. No the views weren't placed using the sheet set manager. Yes the blocks are created on layer zero and yes the associated layer is not off or frozen. I don't believe these blocks are annotative blocks. They appear, as expected, perfectly clear in model space. I just toggel over to paper space and "poof" they've disappeared.
How best to make the stone facets go sideways into the main tower. As you can see though it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. How I could achieve such results?
I'm trying to create a block that reads the x and y coordinates of a point from the end of a leader. Which is fine and easy enough if I use the block in the same space.. ie model space or paper space (layout tab).
However I wan't to be able to capture the coordinate from the model space, through the viewport, and pass it onto the block in Paper Space. Is this possible?
Or is it a case of having to use a more LISP based approach?
I have a solid hatch that is in model space (actually in an xref in model space). When I use multileaders (in paper space) and point into the hatched area, that part of the multileader becomes hidden. As if it was a layering or object arrangement issue.
is there a way to COPY objects from model space to paper space? CHSPACE only "cuts" geometry. I need the same geometry stacked in both model space and paper space.
I feel like I have a vague memory of once learning how to click on an object in a viewport and being able to click a button or use a command to switch that object to paper space (so that it appears the same size). I'm trying to avoid having to go through the steps to scale down the object once I get it in paper space).
Im working on a student version of Architectural CAD 2012 i drew a floor plan and used AEC Dimensions on my model space but when i switch over to work space they don't show up. I tried matching properties and switching between paper and model but so far no luck.
I have several viewports rotated in paper space. When i set them to let say 1:100 scale go to paper space and then click into viewport it comes back to zoom extends of model space and i have to set it all up again and rotate it.
Second problem is that I've created wipeout in model space when i go to layout (paper space) ti looks just how i want it.
When I go to preview or plot it doesn't recognise any wipeouts?
I need to have users plot to DWF from paper space so they can retain their customized layers colors etc, on that specific paper space tab, as well as the view via viewport that they like most.
I then am mixing this with FDO data generated out of Model space. Unfortunately, when using the EXPORTLAYOUT command, the data is coped into Model space but seems to retain it's paper space coordinates. I had hoped this function would behave like CHSPACE and copy everything from paper to model space in the same scale.
ACAD 2010 text doesn't view the same in MSpace and PSpace! Model space is the acad default text: txt Paper Space it appears as it should as Romans. The drawings print as txt and not as it should Romans! When I change the text in model space to Romans, save the drawing, enter PSpace and the return to MSpace, it seems to 'reset' back to text!
This is specific to my workstation BTW, when I open the dwg file on a colleagues PC it opens Romans in both Model and Paper space.
I just started a new job and am struggling to set everything up the way my old company had AutoCad configured. My old company actually had people that were involved in writing the code for AutoCad on the payroll, so hopefully what I'm looking for isn't some intense computer programming issue.
In short, I am trying to be able to create a generic title block in model space, and reference that title block into paper space of a new drawing without having to create a new tab or anything first. A new paper space tab is automatically created upon attaching the new title block. My old company had its own custom menu bar with lots of custom commands, so the work flow would go something like this: "Old company name" in menu bar -> "Insert" -> "Title Blocks" -> "24x36 title block" (or whatever size we wanted to use obv). Once the desired title block size was selected, a new tab would be created in paper space with the title block as an xref, and a copy of the generic title block was saved to the main folder containing drawings of the project, and could be edited with the specific project info from there.
Is there a semi-easy way to do this, or is this a coding issue that a non-programmer such as myself might have some difficulty doing?
I am relatively new to A.C. 2010 and have a recurring issue with copy and paste. Currently all I am trying to do is copy text from paper space into model space and it wont let me.
