3ds Max :: Mesh Only Visible When Selected
Feb 18, 2013
I have a strange behavior in my viewport. Sometimes when importing CAD data, some objects are only visible in shaded view, when they are selected. In wireframe its all there. I have max 2013 with pack 6 on a win8x64 machine in direct3d driver for viewport. GFX is 680gtx with latest drivers.

Working with many layers 60+ is great, but most of the time we have many that are not selected i.e. visible.sometime 30+ those layers are most of the time not needed anymore or make it too crowd in the layer box, making layer selection and handling messy.
The best way is to remove them from the PDN, while keeping only the visible selected. But removing the "not selected" layers one by one is time consuming and again, accidents happen.
Three solutions .
A simple way to do it, is just add under "edit menu" or the "Layer menu" the following. "Create new PDN from selected visible layers"..
OR
add to the "Save As" the option to "Save selected visible layers only"
OR the long way, that has its good things in it too.
Add the option to INVERT the layers visibility selection, and then the option to remove/delete selected layers. (of coarse add an approval "are you sure box")
This option would even be great for other uses when we need to switch back and forth between many visible layers. for example when making animations etc.

Everytime I try to cut something it says
"Warning: No pixels are more than 50% selected. The selection edges will not be visible."

I'm trying to make a Wall Types Legend using the Legend function in 2011. I did the first wall type just fine, placed it in section, tagged the material, etc. Now when I go to place another wall in a section view, it tells me the component is not visible in selected view. They are both new construction phase, stacked walls.

I am having difficulty with the display of my point numbers and description when plotting. I am doing piping desing and utilizing Civil 3D points for the coardinates and elevations to display in a point table. For my viewport, in the properties dialogue box, under the Shade Plot option, I have selected Legacy Hidden due to needing my pipes to display properly only to have my points not display properly. If I opt for Legacy Wireframe or As Displayed, my points display correctly but my pipes do not. Any clue as to how I can have both display properly?

I have an assembly that has somewhere a hole with a round bar that exactly fits in this hole. But when meshing the assembly, the mesh of the hole and the mesh of the bar are different.
The result is that the different parts do only seem to touch each other at the edges of the mesh, resulting in high stresses.
See picture.
I tried to made a derived part from the assembly, but that one does not finish meshing. After 48 hours, the progress bar is still half way. While the one above did finish in about 15 minutes. What can I do to make the meshes match?

I thought they were supposed to appear when the Polygon shelf is selected? I don't see them. In fact, when I select different shelves the menu items on the right half of the task bar don't change at all. Is this normal?
This is Maya 2011 on Mac OS X Lion.

I've encountered a strange issue in PSDs I've inherited from another designer.
When I have a text layer selected with the type tool active, the font size reads correctly (say, 40px). When I actually select the text with the type tool, the font size gives a strange number (say, 38.74px).
See the screenshots below:
This is on OSX 10.8.3, Photoshop CS6.

On LR 4 and now 5, the shades of grey used to distinguish the selected vs, not selected images in the filmstrip at the bottom of the workspace are too close together making it difficult to see what has been selected. Is there someway to control the color and/or the shade of grey used for each to make it easier to tell at a glance which image(s) is currently selected?

I'm animating this stock model that was given to me and I do the animation in another file so it plays smoother (the mesh is kind of heavy). But when I import the bip file, the mesh doesn't adjust to the new animation but it gets all over the place. Is there any specific pipeline I should do this?

Got a weird thing happening in CS6 and wondered if any of you have ran into it. I've imported an .obj file and I was able to move, scale and edit as desired.
Then I closed the doce and reopend at a later time to find that not only did the position and scale of the mesh totally change, but I was also no longer able to move, scale or edit it in any way! every time I'd use the 3d tools to move it around or scale it

Some photo editor has a feature called mesh warp: it overlays a grid over a selected area and the user can drag the points in the grid to distort (warp) the underlying graphics.
The closest thing I found in photoshop is liquify, but it doesn't work quite the same. It's harder to make subtle changes with the liquify tools than with mesh warp.
For example, if I have a photo of a woman with barrel waist and I want to edit her into hour-glass waist, having mesh warp would be handy.
I have photoshop cs2.

I am having difficulty choosing which way to draw a jagged burr you get after .010" thick sheetmetal is punctured with a .030 punch. I drew my blank SOLID. I created the .030 hole. Now I would like it to look realistic. It's too clean. I need to add a jagged surface to it. I am haveg difficulty creating a three sided mesh on a .015" radius.

I have moved a mesh off to the side while I work on the 3d solid substructure the mesh covers. Now I need to move the mesh back, but it will not select the end "corner" of the mesh so I can place it back into position. This was not a problem in the past (200, but it doesn't work in our current version of AutoCad 2009. Is there a system variable or setting I need to set?

Is there an easy ways to clean up a mesh so that its easy to skin ? i am working with the mvu default mesh. someone told i have to remake my own body then redo the uvw map to match. Unfortunately i don't have the skills to do that currently.
My end goal is to increase the poly count so that my clothing look smooth and still be able to skin it easily. Mesh smooth just causes more problems.

I attached a biped via physics to a simple character mesh and made the envelopes fitting like I want them. But here comes the problem. If I move the thigh or calf, it doesn't matter, the mesh starts to spinning around the bone of the calf and I just don't know how to fix this.
The spinning is almost not to see if the thigh gets moved though. I attached two pics and hope that the problem will get more clear that way.

Imagine you have a a box, say 1 foot square. You attach a fat rubber band in the center of one side and then you pull the rubber band up to an edge and around it to the center of the next face. It stretches and the corner is the only spot that controls the change of direction. If you raise one end (the segment from your finger to the corner) it raises, but the segment from the corner to where the other end is attached stays flat on the box until you move your hand far enough away so that there is now no wrap around the edge. Now if you pull and relax, it acts like any normal rubber band. But then if you lower your fingers with the end you are holding and go back down to the face, you wrap around that corner again and can pull and relax around the corner.
What I'm actually doing is animating a muscle that goes around a bone when it's stretched out. But when it's contracted, one end moves out away from that bone it's wrapped around and it's now just a straight line. I need to animate that muscle from that contracted and straight position to the extended position but have the end of the muscle bend around the bone when it hits it.

I have a humanoid mesh (it was originally a editable poly, but I think I converted it to an editable mesh), and I have a bipedal rig (the Man variant of the default) that is fitted to the mesh. I just cant figure out for the life of me how to attach the mesh to the rig. All of the tutorials I've seen are for older versions of 3ds, and use physique. When I apply physique to the mesh and hit "attach to node" nothing happens, and its all downhill from there. Could one of you good people point me in the direction of a tutorial for 3ds Max 2013?

I don't do a lot with bones or skin but I have a nice little rig of an orthodontic band. It's essentially 4 torus objects. Imagine 4 torus objects in a straight line barely touching. The band gets snapped over braces from tooth to tooth.
I have bones assigned to the torus objects so that when I pull a bone, the whole object will stretch like a rubber band and then I and stretch the rings from tooth to tooth.
All is well with that. However, once I use a bone to move/stretch the objects, the envelopes don't move with the object. They stay behind and everything begins to distort. How do you lock the envelopes to the mesh?

I want to achieve exactly the same thing as shown in this video
[URL].......
I did as instructed and confirmed that I want to transform it to a mesh. But as I proceed and push the Smooth Object button, I receive the following message:
‘A smooth mesh cannot be created from at least one of the selected objects.
Smooth meshes can be created only from 3D solids, 3D surfaces, 3D faces, polygon meshes, polyface meshes, regions, and closed polylines.’

Here is the problem: I have a 3D model in the format of 123D (Freeware by Autocad). I converted this to .DXF then imported into AutoCad 2012 and saved it in .DWG format. The 3D model is of a crocodile. I wish to take cross-sections of this model so to generate width traverse sections from the longitudinal head to the tail of the animal. This is so I can form a model of the animal out of wire.
So how to best do this? Apparently the model in .DXF/.DWG became a 2D "mesh" so I must first convert to a solid? (I say 'became' because originally it was in .123c format, but my version of Autocad 2012 does not recognize this format, so I had to convert to .DXF, which I believe rendered the 3D into a 2D mesh) Or can AutoCad take a 2D "mesh" and generate cross-sections?
Top-down general advice is good but even better is a detailed step-by-step explanation of how to do this. I did "select" the entire animal and tried to make a "solid" out of it using a button icon on the ribbon panel (as opposed to a "surface") but I think I stopped prematurely--there was no progress bar so hard to tell. So then I guess you generate a cross-section once you generate the solid by doing what? is there a dialog box that ask for your end points (of the plane, defined by a line?)

What possibly could be happening?
