AutoCAD Inventor :: Constrain To View Border - How Is It Used (IDW File)

Jun 30, 2013

I'm currently using Inventor 2013. but I've seen this in earlier versions of Inventor.

After creating a view within a drawing sheet, if you RMB on the view label, an option for Constrain to View Border appears.

What does this option do and how is it used?  I don't see anything happening when I use this option.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Constrain Section View To Work Plane

Jul 2, 2013

If you edit a section view sketch you can project model edges in the sketch and use them to constrain the section view line. However I cannot seem to project an included workplane to the sketch. For a particular application I really need to use a workplane because the model is actually a dummy that gets replaced by a vb macro. So any projected model edges will loose their reference.

I found out that I could use a sketch in the model to create the section view. In a model sketch it is possible to project work planes, so this looks like a good solution. However I do prefer the flexibility that you have when you use a drawing sketch.

How to use a work plane to constrain a section view, other then the model sketch method explained above.

Revit :: Constrain Family And Rotate With Parameter?

Jul 15, 2013

I need to constrain a handle to a butterfly valve and add a parameter for rotating the handle angle.  I can't achieve this as when I constrain the handle to the valve the handle will not rotate without breaking the positional constraints.

I've tried looking at the door swing posts but they don't use circular objects and I can't get them to work for my valve.

Revit :: How To Constrain Curved Ribs On A Curved Roof Line

Jan 26, 2014

Having a time getting ribs to align 2m below top of ridge beam, and connect to curved wall below.  I created one, then arrayed, but the radius changes at each 2.5 degree interval.  I don't think I should have to calculate the % radius change to get the beams to do this.  Some constraint button maybe?

Not sure if editing a wall profile is the best way to model this, but it's working.

Revit :: Plan View Tags Referencing Wrong Dependent View?

Jan 10, 2012

We have our first project in Revit that we are having to split among multiple sheets because of the size of the building, so I have made 3 dependent views from the main overall view, named them, cropped them and placed each part (A,B, and C) on separate sheets.  Now that I am trying to do enlarged toilet plan views, I want to tag the plans with the plan callouts on the 1/8” sheets that are the dependent views, but all the view tags are referencing dependent view A since it is the first dependent view in the list.  If I change sheet A to be named Sheet X for instance, all the view tags now reference sheet B since that becomes the first dependent view alphabetically.  I want them to reference the sheet they appear in, but I can’t seem to figure out how to do that, even though they are in different dependent views completely and within the crop region, they all default to the first dependent view in alphabetical order.

Revit :: Resetting View Clip / New Elements In View

Feb 9, 2014

I have a 3D view and when I turn on the clip boundary everything disappears, which leads me to believe that the clip boundary is off to the side somewhere. I zoom out & out, but can't find it.

Is there a way of resetting it? I could just make a new view, but I'd have to set the perspective again.

In this view I have hidden all the objects except for the one (a book case) that is being detailed. Every time I model something new it shows up in this view. Is there anyway of stopping new objects showing in a given view?

Of course I can put in a 'dead' symbol to show where it is in plans, but that's simply not the same...

Revit :: View Range Of All Other View Types

Jan 17, 2013

Having been on Revit for more than 8 years there's nothing more difficult to explain to a new user than how the View Range functions.  It's one of the first features one must deal with with Revit and yet it can yield illogical results without proper use.  The #1 youtube video on Revit's View Range is 20 MINUTES long! Here's my top reasons why View Range is illogical:

1.  It does not behave like the "view range" of all other Revit view types.  Sections, Elevations, 3d views are all based on a simple concept, a direction, and a 3 dimensional bounding box.  With floor plans, elements can appear (or not appear) in a floor plan that is clearly cut so that they shouldn't if the user doesn't understand the rules (and there are lots).

2.  It has "Additional View Range Rules" (or exceptions to logic), 7 in fact, which takes Revit Wiki over a page to describe.  Each rule is complicated and very situational.  No other Revit view types have exceptions.  Why floor plans need to have special exceptions is absurd and political.  These exceptions must also slow down regeration time of the model since it must process different groups of elements individually to determine their view state in the floor plan.

3.  Modern architecture does not adhere to simple boxy shapes and user's need to trust that their view range is actually cutting the surface as they see it.  No exceptions or special rules.

4.  View Range has a Top and a Cutting Plane elevation.  It is completely illogical for any element to appear above the cutting plane.  This can easily lead to misinterpretation of 2d drawings because some elements may not appear in section even though they are above the cutting plane.  Views should have a cutting plane, direction (up or down in this case) and a depth.  Simple, just like all other Revit views.

5.  The View Depth "range" is rarely used effectively.  The only practical use is to show low roofs of buildings with higher roofs, or possibly foundation elements.  Scope boxes or Underlays can accomplish this task much simpler.  All the additional line-styles that accompany View Depths are just unnecessary and add more things for the user to manage.  It's time to kill View Depth.

It's in Autodesk's best interest to make Revit a user-friendly application.  This is one area that needs attention.  Keep Revit easy to use without having to watch a 20 minute video.

Revit :: How To View All Fonts

Working on a title sheet (i.e., a logo, and it includes fonts selections) and I can see each font individually on the list of fonts drop down on the System Family dialog, but I wonder if there is a way to see them physically all at the same time somewhere so I could compare each style side to side and see what each looks like at the same time. How or where I see all the fonts included in Revit all at the same time?

Revit :: Visibility By Level In 3D View?

Mar 9, 2012

Is there a way to set the visibility of elements in a 3D view according to the Level they are associated with?

The VG tab which opens the filter dialog provides a check box for the "Levels" category, and the relevant parameters are made available.

But I can not seem to create a filter rule which evaluates any of those parameters (name, elevation, etc...) to then isolate the visibility of those elements in the 3D view that either meet, or do not meet the criteria. Nothing seems to work.

To achieve a "similar" effect in a 3D view, I can use a Section Box, but that is a very clunky and imprecise way.I can also create a Shared Parameter for "Level" and perhaps filter successfully that way, but that seems redundant with the Levels intelligence already established.

I know that I can move the project browser window so that isn't all that critical. My concern is that when I want to look at a schedule it also is so far to the left of the screen I have to move the other windows to see it.

Revit :: Placing View From One Project Into Another

May 16, 2012

Quite simple what I want to acheive in ACA but not in revit. I want a line elevation view from file A (with shadows if possible) to insert into another file (B) sheet (so it shows another option variant without the complexity of setting up phases to show that option in file B. I can insert from file a render - managed that successfully but I dont want full renders as the the recipient (a planning authority) will plot from a pdf non-colour.

Is there any way of rendering so that the result is mostly line with a bit of half tone? I do elevations within a project this way by setting up a 3D aligned to elevation then sort out what I want shaded / colour / line by graphic overrrides.

Dragging and clicking like that selects an object, as I expected it would, there is no sign of an sort of perspective or saved image file, so what do I really do?

Revit :: View Sheets From A Linked Model?

Dec 18, 2012

I have created a big and complex Revit model, in Revit 2013. It's now time for me to print the sheets - I want them in PDF and DWF. But I really have some problems doing that. When I print to PDF it takes about 20 minutes for it to print 1 drawing - and it will not be complete - elements are missing compared to the original view. Often Revit stops working - and it's the same story when I try to save a DWF.

I think the reason why I have the problem is because of the complexity of the building's geometry. Have modeled it by importing SAT. files from Rhino - to create the form. The result is great but the file is now 370 Mb. I'm trying to link the model in to a new Revit project to minimize the file, and hopefully get the drawings printed in PDF and DWF. In the the new project I can't see the sheets from the linked file though.

Is there a way to link the sheets to another procjet?
