View 1 RepliesDoes anyone know of any good tutorials on the web for the dodge and burn tools? I have just about mastered all of the tools except these two. I don't know what my problem is here. If you know of any books or articles that are available, please let me know of those also.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Photoshop CS2 and I'm learning how to use it. I'm taking a photography class and my instructor was telling us about the Burn and Dodge tools and showed us some techniques. I can't seem to get the burn and or dodge tool to work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have seen three brush technques to lighten and darken parts of an image, dodge & burn, to enhance dimension (look more 3D):
1. Create a Curves Adjustment Layer set to lighten or darken image, fill it's mask w. black and paint w. white to dodge or burn respectively. Two layers are required, one to dodge, one to burn.
2. Creat a new layer w. Overlay mode and "Fill w. Overlay-neutral color (50% gray) set in the "New Layer" dialogue box. Then paint with white or black to dodge or burn respectively.
3. Duplicate the layer to be modified and use the Dodge & Burn Tool.
Is one method better than the other for non-destructive overall control and ease of use?
How do you "burn" or "dodge" light using Photoshop Element 11?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhy not add a tool to Paint.NET? I'm pretty sure this program's development is also based around creating a image editing and creation program to where everything is simplified greatly.
I do understand that you can easily do this type of stuff with the line tool and opacity settings but really it would be towards the convenience of users.
Photoshop :: How to use burn / dodge tool in pencil mode
View 1 Replies View RelatedI create an adjustment layer and then want to erase part of that layer, nothing is happening. I've tried painting to lighten or darken and tried the burn and dodge tool, but nothing happens.
What have I missed? I'm working just the same as in CS3, but with no results.
I was doing it before, but now it keeps losing saturation when I use the dodge/burn tool. I must have changed a setting or something.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have forgotten how to dodge or burn an image using layers. the link i had saved is no longer good.
View 3 Replies View RelatedPhotoshop 7. Clone tool (etal) won't work. I've verified I am in RGB mode, and the 'Aligned' box is unchecked. Since the background layer is locked, I duplicated the background and tried working in the unlocked layer. Still no luck. These tools were working fine before, and sometimes when I open PS they do. Other times, like now, they are inaccessible.

Is there a button to get it to darken instead?

Also when I used the spot healer I am left with a smudge after I try to erase unwanted parts of an image.
How do I combine a fuzzy selection area with a dodge or burn operation?
The fuzzy select tool is handy for roughly outlining areas of over or under exposure. There must be a way to combine an oddly-shaped fuzzy selection area with a jittery dodging operation. Do I have to turn the fuzzy selection area into a "brush" somehow, in order to "dodge or burn" that area?
use of 'quality' and 'weight' under 'smooth stroke' in say dodge/burn tool. This option is available under some other tools too but I am not able to find the effect of these options even after scouring the net and could not find any difference after changing the default values.
Version GIMP 2.8.X from software centre of Ubuntu 13.04; no modifications, no extras.
Just recently upgraded from Photoshop CS5.5 64bit to Photoshop CS6 64 bit. Crashes when using burn tool, crop tool, or dodge tool?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSimply adds the two components. But this is only correct if there is no transparency involved.
Once there is transparency involved, it gets more complex. So, what is the math behind the linear dodge blending mode if the top layer has semi-transparent pixels (=alpha less than 1)?
I have a layer with some blurred spots. I want them to glow. I have a colored background (light brown). For some reason, when I set my layer to Color Dodge it does nothing.
But when I make a group and set it to Color Dodge, then put my layer inside that, it glows like freakin crazy. Can anyone explain why this is? Should it work both ways? Is there some magic to groups?
I was reading one of techniques for removing blue haze from pictures. The initial two steps were as follows:
1. Click on your color burn layer 2. Select all and copy the color burn layer only to the clipboard
I have never used "color burn layer". So what "color burn layer" is and how to create it. how to creaste color burn layer.I have photoshop CS5 (with Windows 7).
I get to use Photoshop CS3 from time time and I recently found a problem:
I want to Color burn 2 Layers, yes I know how it should work but it does not.
I got 2 Gradients, one is somewhat red to white and the other one is grey and white mixed in a strange way (I'm just experimenting).
I got these two layers, and as soon as I create the Gray-White gradient, the whole painting is just like the Gradient and not the Color burnt with the other ones. So it ignores the mode "color burn" somehow.
What does the dodge tool do?
What does dodging mean?
Is there some link that explains what each tool does in somewhat simple language?
Is there anyway to reverse the effects of using dodge, without undoing?
That is, is there some kind of brush like dodge that will..."undodge"?
I upgraded to PS 5.5 on my Mac I've had this problem with the dodge tool.I can change hrd/softness fine, but now way will the little 'tails' at either end of the stroke disappear, whether shape dynamics is switched on or off, All I want is to be able to have a fading stroke, not a fade and taper.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using PS 5.5 to work on a .tif file scanned from a photo negative of a building. The dodge tool & burn tool do not work, even when I set the exposure to 100%. The history palette shows "dodge tool" each time I click in the image, but nothing happens. I tried these tools in a another similar file & both dodge & burn work fine. What could cause these tools not to work?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWith the burn tool one can use it several ways. The direct way is to just click on the tool and select whether you want highlights, mid-tones, or shadows. Each option changes the burn shade slightly. Also there are a host of blend modes which again changes the burn shade.
One can also create a burn layer and change blend modes, all with different effects. Then you can also use the brush tool and select color burn or color dodge, with the foreground color changing the shade of the burn.So all of these options give a great deal of control, but frankly I am just burned out on the process.
All I want is to have the burn deepen the color to more closely match the color in the shadows of the picture. It seems to work better on flesh and soft colors than on bright colors. In those cases I give up and resort to a brush in normal mode with color selected by eyedropper. But that can make the image more muddy as it covers up rather than intensify.
So wilh all the man-years of experience out there is there a more simple way to get the correct burn shade than going though 49 different variations? Or should I just stick with the brush and use a different blend mode?
I draw a rectangle and color it to M40Y80 in CMYK. Then draw Circle color radial fountain 80% Black & white.
Then apply Uniform transparency. Now I got problem in printing also & while making CMYK jpeg also same problem. If I convert to Bitmap CMYK same problem. but if you convert to RGB it look OK & then you have to convert to CMYK.
CS2 dodge tool stopped working as set, yet Burn, Sponge, Clone Tools all work; dodge tool leaves centered white specks if clicked multiple times; all my CS1 tools work; all my CS2 & CS1 tool settings are same (0 hardness, 20% exposure), rebooting does not fix; Is it possible to create this problem by accidentally typing Shift, Alt or Ctrl "," or "." or similar whilst using CS2 Dodge Tool?

Regardless of the brush diameter or hardness when using the dodge tool to lighten an area of a photograph, it only lightens a very small area in the center of the brush and then only after repeated clicks. The burn tool seems to operate as normal (the whole area of the brush regardless of diameter).
Looking to start using RAW files more often to process my images.
Tried to use the dodge tool with a RAW file over the weekend and recieved a notification saying somthing along the lines of "Cannot use this function with a 16bit file, must convert to 8bit"
I also recieved a similar message when trying to use the magic brush tool.
I would like to be able to adjust exposure, color, contrast (clarity) etc. when working with a RAW file. Would like to be able to adjust these parameters using the select tool, and would also like to be able to "brush" theses adjusments on. Also, if there is a Gradual ND filter function available, i would like to know where to find it.
Is it possible to do these things (with a RAW image) using PSE? If so, how?
Or do I have to purchase Lightroom if i want to work with RAW images?
get my pen (Wacom Intuos 2) to work properly with dodge tool like the mouse? It is the dodge effect was made by mouse..It is by the pen (same brush size)
The brush becomes too small and has a hardness effect, not smooth at all. If I size up the brush real large it's still not right (like in lower corner) and it's hard to control because I hardly see the brush movement. Pressing the pen tip on the tablet pen/mouse mode didn't.
