Paint.NET :: Dodge / Burn Tool

Dec 24, 2011

Why not add a tool to Paint.NET? I'm pretty sure this program's development is also based around creating a image editing and creation program to where everything is simplified greatly.

I do understand that you can easily do this type of stuff with the line tool and opacity settings but really it would be towards the convenience of users.

GIMP :: How To Combine Fuzzy Selection Area With Dodge / Burn Operation

Apr 30, 2013

How do I combine a fuzzy selection area with a dodge or burn operation?

The fuzzy select tool is handy for roughly outlining areas of over or under exposure. There must be a way to combine an oddly-shaped fuzzy selection area with a jittery dodging operation. Do I have to turn the fuzzy selection area into a "brush" somehow, in order to "dodge or burn" that area?

Photoshop :: Best Technique To Dodge And Burn Image?

Sep 9, 2012

I have seen three brush technques to lighten and darken parts of an image, dodge & burn, to enhance dimension (look more 3D):

1. Create a Curves Adjustment Layer set to lighten or darken image, fill it's mask w. black and paint w. white to dodge or burn respectively. Two layers are required, one to dodge, one to burn.
2. Creat a new layer w. Overlay mode and "Fill w. Overlay-neutral color (50% gray) set in the "New Layer" dialogue box. Then paint with white or black to dodge or burn respectively.
3. Duplicate the layer to be modified and use the Dodge & Burn Tool.

Is one method better than the other for non-destructive overall control and ease of use?

I create an adjustment layer and then want to erase part of that layer, nothing is happening. I've tried painting to lighten or darken and tried the burn and dodge tool, but nothing happens.

Photoshop :: Clone, Brush, Burn-dodge Tools Don't Work

Aug 22, 2005

Photoshop 7. Clone tool (etal) won't work. I've verified I am in RGB mode, and the 'Aligned' box is unchecked. Since the background layer is locked, I duplicated the background and tried working in the unlocked layer. Still no luck. These tools were working fine before, and sometimes when I open PS they do. Other times, like now, they are inaccessible.

Photoshop :: Dodge Tool Won't Work

Sep 12, 2007

I am using PS 5.5 to work on a .tif file scanned from a photo negative of a building. The dodge tool & burn tool do not work, even when I set the exposure to 100%. The history palette shows "dodge tool" each time I click in the image, but nothing happens. I tried these tools in a another similar file & both dodge & burn work fine. What could cause these tools not to work?

VideoStudio :: Upgraded To X3 / Lost Next Button In X2 Burn Mode

Oct 6, 2010

Recently upgraded to X3 despite reservations on the 'Burn' capabilities (see many threads in this forum). Having completed a project I now want to burn a DVD. The options available in X3 do not excite me - it seems that there is a forced exit from X2 into either DVD Factory Pro or DVD MovieFactory 7 SE. Played with these but then breached my low boredom threshold (is it worth persevering with either of them? Both look a bit Mickey-Mouse)

Decided to fire-up my trusty copy of X2 and do the burn in that.

On the first screen I noticed that the 'Next' button is partially obscured by the 'Setting and Options' button. But enough is visible to proceed to next screen. But problem arises on next screen where 'Next' button has now become 'Back' button and 'Next' button is no longer visible. Therefore I can only go backwards but not forwards (a metaphor for life?)

Have tried an uninstall and reinstall of X2 but problem remains exactly the same. Did not have this problem before I installed X3 (on same computer).

Questions:

1. Is there a keyboard shortcut that will take me to the next screen when in Burn mode?
2. Is it worth persevering with either of the burn options in X3 or are both inferior to the X2 burn?

Photoshop :: Clone Tool - Why Does It Darken In Layers

Nov 10, 2013

Some years ago I used to use an old version of PS at work. It was before the CSs but I can't remember the version. When I used the clone tool it would simply clone the area with the same tonal depth and I used it a lot. I now have CS6 and when I use the tool whatever I clone will darken over existing tones, as layers, and not blend in. Is there a setting so it clones at the same tonal depth and not layer-up?

Photoshop :: Why Did CS2 Dodge Tool Stop Working As Set

Photoshop :: Dodge Tool Brush Area

Regardless of the brush diameter or hardness when using the dodge tool to lighten an area of a photograph, it only lightens a very small area in the center of the brush and then only after repeated clicks. The burn tool seems to operate as normal (the whole area of the brush regardless of diameter).

Photoshop Elements :: How To Use Dodge Tool With RAW File

Aug 6, 2013

Looking to start using RAW files more often to process my images.

Tried to use the dodge tool with a RAW file over the weekend and recieved a notification saying somthing along the lines of "Cannot use this function with a 16bit file, must convert to 8bit"

I also recieved a similar message when trying to use the magic brush tool.

I would like to be able to adjust exposure, color, contrast (clarity) etc. when working with a RAW file. Would like to be able to adjust these parameters using the select tool, and would also like to be able to "brush" theses adjusments on. Also, if there is a Gradual ND filter function available, i would like to know where to find it.

Is it possible to do these things (with a RAW image) using PSE? If so, how?

Or do I have to purchase Lightroom if i want to work with RAW images?

GIMP :: Darken Area Of Picture

Dec 21, 2011

The way I like to darken an image of a photo is that instead of using the burn tool, I create a new layer, set the opacity low (say 15) and then paint in the areas that I want to make darker. This gives me increased flexibility when I want to go back and fix what I did because I'm not altering the original layer.

Here's my problem though. One thing I like to do is to blur that layer using a gaussian blur to soften the edges of the area I am darkening. That works nicely but inevitably after applying the gaussian blur I want to come back and change something. That's a mess once the layer has already been blurred. So the work-around I've found is to save my darken layer and hide it from view (using the eye beside the layer) and then duplicate the layer and apply the gaussian blur. Then when I need to modify the area that I am darkening, I delete the visible blurred layer, change the invisible non-blurred version, then reduplicate and reblur. And that works.

What I think I want is some sort of "blurring" layer. Is there anything like that out there?

Lots of times I want to blur a mask a little and that gets to be a real pain. The steps I use to save my non-blurred version is to copy the mask to selection, then selection to path then change the path name to be Mask: (layer name). And then when I need to edit the non-blurred version, I delete the mask, change my path to a selection, then add mask from selection. then make my change, then reblur. Again it works but its difficult.

Photoshop :: Tablet Pen Doesn't Work Right With Dodge Tool

get my pen (Wacom Intuos 2) to work properly with dodge tool like the mouse? It is the dodge effect was made by mouse..It is by the pen (same brush size)

The brush becomes too small and has a hardness effect, not smooth at all. If I size up the brush real large it's still not right (like in lower corner) and it's hard to control because I hardly see the brush movement. Pressing the pen tip on the tablet pen/mouse mode didn't.

GIMP :: Darken Areas Without Affecting Any Other Parts Of Image

Dec 12, 2012

I've got a few pictures taken at night of buildings and the street lights and lights on the buildings have come out extremely bright and 'bleed' out of their point of origin (not sure how else to explain it).

All I want to do is to darken these areas without affecting any of the other parts of the image. Is this possible at all?

What would be ideal would be if there was a tool, plug-in or method where I could select a certain colour range or brightness threshold that I could then lower however much I want without affecting the already dark areas.
