Photoshop :: Disable Tabs?
Jun 12, 2009
In Preferences/Interface, I have both OPEN DOCUMENTS AS TABS and ENABLE FLOATING WINDOW DOCKING unchecked. Yet when I drag in files, they TAB themselves! I really don't like tabs, each time I have to manually FLOAT all windows. How can I totally disable tabs?

I am not a fan of the application frame. I disabled it because I want my files in separate windows the Mac way. But when I open a second file, it appears as a tab in the first window. I hate these tabs. I want my files to open in a separate window, the same way I have always worked. Can Photoshop CS6 be made to behave like previous Mac versions?

issues switching layout tabs by clicking on the tabs?
Occasionally, clicking the Model or other layout tab results in no action, as if I'm not clicking on it.
All other controls (within and external to C3D) function normally so it's not a mouse hardware issue.
It will usually correct itself if I "restore down" the main application window, then maximize it again.
The -layout command is a workaround too.

I thought the tabs were a nice idea until I got into my normal workflow, where I depend on dragging one image or layer into the other quite often. With each pic taking the whole tabbed page, that doesn't work.
So I reset the prefs to not open new images in tabs, and if you use file...open, or a shortcut and browse to the file, it works...they open in a window just like always. But dragging in a photo from another application such as ThumbsPlus opens it in a tab, no matter what I set the preferences at.
If there's no way to change that, besides manually going to each one and changing it to a window, i'm afraid I'll let the trial expire and content myself with PSCS3. This makes no sense.
I often will drag several images into PS, and while in some cases tabs are fine, in others they're not, and I want the default behavior to be a new window for each pic, regardless of whether I use file...open or drag it in from elsewhere.

It happened at the color picker stage when choosing the color of my inset shadow on a rectangle. Everytime I make a selection it launches "Adobe help" and opened over 40 tabs on Chrome.Â

I've used illustrator a bit for drawing pictures, but never for web graphics... I need to create some tabs (for the top of a webpage). Maybe illustrator isn't the most common tool for this but it's the one I can use the most.
Anyone know of any tutorials that might be useful (i've not found any) or have any tips for making the tabs look nice (e.g. what effects to use)

When I am working with various pictures in PS, I have like 10 open and every time I go out of photoshop and come back, they have all closed down to the docking window. I have to re-open them again from there, I want to STOP THEM from closing when I go to desktop or somewhere else. I want them to stay afloat. I know I can click Ctrl + mouse and "restore all windows" but that is also a nuisance because it resized my PS window and I have to push up teh layers palette again.

I am using PS 5. when I have an image open and then open a new image, it appears as a tab in the same space as the first image, is there something in preferences that would let me open new images so they don't open in a tab?

I'm using Photoshop CS6 on Windows 7 with a dual monitor setup. In a prior version, it was the case that multiple open photos could stay in the application frame, such that moving the frame would move all open photos with it, but without using tabs/partitions, which I dislike. Is there no longer a way to configure it this way? I've experimented with "Enable Floating Document Window Docking" and "Open Documents as Tabs", but they aren't doing the trick.
Â
I'm often juggling several applications, and regularly find it convenient to move things from one monitor to the other based on what specific task I'm doing. I know tabs are one "solution", but are inefficient and impractical in my experience. The images I work with typically start very large and get resized/cropped during editing for use in email and the web. Consequently, I have open a mix of very large and small pictures, some portrait and some landscape. Using tabs or multi-up partitions, I can either view only the image I'm working on or some fixed number of images in a fixed (though adjustable) layout. In the latter case, I can usually only see a small portion of the large photos unless I manually resize them based on the current partition size, which changes based on what else I'm currently working on. If I choose to have one "Fit on screen", it's resized based on the full screen size, not the partition the image is in, so again I'm only able to see a portion of a large image. Smaller pictures end up with wasted space within their partitions.

When the "Open Documents as Tabs" checkbox is UNCHECKED, opening multiple documents via File > Open will open them as intended: stacking them on top of each other. However, dragging multiple documents onto the PS tab in the taskbar, or dragging them directly onto PS application surface will NOT have this effect and will open the documents in tabbed mode regardless of the prefs settings. THIS IS !%$@#$ ANNOYING!!! I hope adobe considers fixing this without making me pay a gazillion bucks for another update for a bug fix.

I always used to have my images opened as 'floating' documents. Since I'm using CS4, PS always opens new images 'tabbed', and I have to drag them out of there manually to get a floating window. Is there a way to prevent this? I noticed the 'Open Document as Tabs' setting in the Interface Preferences, but that doesn't seem to do the trick (either enabled or disabled, PS keeps doing it).

I have never been able to use Full Screen Mode / Full Screen Mode with Menu Bar because my Window Tabs disappear.
Â
Until now I have ignored this but I really want to start making the most of my screen space. I don't understand how people can go into full screen mode without tabs of their open documents. It makes the experience completely useless to me and I can't believe I can't find any solutions online. I feel like I am overlooking a simple button somewhere on the screen thinking "surely Adobe would include this!?"

I am currently on 13 inch MacBook Pro using CS6 beta.

Using CS5, when I have multiple images open, it open in tabs which I like. However, when I put my cursor over a tab, a bubble appears that says the exact same thin it does on the tab. However, with the bubble there I can't click on the tab beneath it to select it or to delete it.
Â
This is actually a huge problem when I make camtasia videos where I want to switch between tabs during a voice recording because I can't select different tabs smoothly.
Â
How can I make it so nothing appears when I put my cursor over a tab (I want to keep using tabs though. This feature is great).

I have updated my windows version of PE 9 to 9.03. However, when I want to move a selection from one pic to another, I need to open both, then go to Window-images-float all in window, and check that option. However, even after updating, the first 5 options in window-images are greyed out. How can I get them active?

Okay so I downloaded some brushes and then my photoshop cs6 started to work a lot slower and it just wasn't working right at all. So I deleted the brushes but it didn't change.
So basically the problems are when I try and use a brush the brushing is delayed and when i switch tabs it won't let me back onto the program and when I try and make a simple picture with just text and a photo and then try and save for web this pops up 'This image exceeds the size Save for Web was designed for. You may experience out of memory errors and slow performance. Are you sure you want to continue?'

I'm on a Mac, 10.6.8 and PS CS5 12.0.4 with a Wacom Intuos3.
Â
I select a hard round brush and turn off the Transfer > Opacity Jitter > 'pen pressure' option. However as soon as I thouch the tip of my pen down pen pressure turns back on. This is annoying when trying to do a detailed cutout in a layer mask as it leaves behind opaque areas that aren't always visible right away.
Â
Even if I create a new preset with pen pressure off, it comes back on once saved. There must be a way to turn off pen pressure while using the Wacom tablet. Am I missing something?

I try to draw on my graphics tablet, the brush pop-up comes up instead. Aiptek and Vista are unable to correct their problems so I need a way do disable that pop up in Photoshop (CS2). This is the same pop up that comes up if you right-mouse-click on the drawing while the brush tool is selected.
I'd be glad to disable ALL of the right-click pop-ups in Photoshop in order to work around this behavior.

Ever since CS4 came out I feel like I've been less productive in Photoshop due to annoying window dock/snapping. Windows are constantly sticking and resizing themselves in ways that blocks the work I am trying to do.
Also the main image itself automatically resizes to feet the work space and I find this also an annoyance. This is my main question: How can I disable "sticky" windows? In fact if there a way to get the old classic skin back that would be great, also...
because all the programs in CS4 are missing a handle bar at the top of the window, making it difficult to find a place to click to drag the window around...which also wastes time. Sometimes the classic skin is visible underneath buttons in graphic glitches..
Finally, is there a way to disable hardware acceleration completely? My processor is fast enough that it can complete tasks faster than the latency of accessing the GPU, so hardware acceleration actually slows things down. Also the hardware code has bugs in it that prevents me from opening massive images (eg, 21600 x 21600 image crashes).

If I select Free Transform on a selection, and then try to move that selection around on the screen, while I'm moving it, it snaps, and I don't want this 'snap'. How do I disable it? I KNOW that you don't always need to select Free Transform to move a selection, but I NEED to in this case.

I'm having issues with LogTransport program that keeps on creating handles on folders or files that I open/manipulate with Photoshop CS6 (x64).
Â
When I close photoshop, this program is still running and it still has handles open on those folders etc, so I can't delete the folders or files.
Â
Can I permanently disable this program from runnign? I personally don't need it anyways so it's just another annoying crapware that I never intended to install with PS and that keeps making problems. I can't imagine general users dealing with this all the time.

I'm currently trying the Adobe CC (still in trial, 25 days to go) and one thing I really do A LOT is Cmd+Shift+C-ing a file in Photoshop and paste in illustrator to keep working on my layout.
Â
in my old iMac (2duo 2.66ghz with 4gb ddr2 ram) I can do it no problem, even with big files. Usually around 5000px and 150 to 300dpi. It takes a few seconds, but it works. Now I got a little retina 13", with an i5 2.6ghz and 8gb ddr3 ram, and it can't handle a 3000px-1500px copy and paste from Photoshop to illustrator without popping up that "Clipboard is too big to export" window.
Â
Both are running OSX Mountain Lion updated. iMac on the Adobe CS6 and Retina with Adobe CC.Both have 70% of ram for Photoshop alone, plenty of space in hard disk (no idea if this interferes) and only Illustrator and Photoshop open at the time. Both Cmd+Shift+C-ing, flattening and copying, cutting, etc. doesn't work.
Â
I don't want to disable clipboard export, I want to be able to do what I use to do in my iMac.
