Photoshop :: Saving TGA With Straight Alpha

Oct 26, 2012

Is there a way to save the alpha channel not premultiplied in a tga as I need straight alpha ... ? While testing I got strange behaviour.... I have 5 bar from white to black with RGB value of 255,191,128,64,0

1) Copy pasting those from rgb to alpha give me some "conversion error"

255191128640255191 and 192128 and 12964 and 650

Opening this in other software will give me

255175105460

2) Copy pasting the red channel to the alpha give me "converted premultiplied" value

255191128640255204149850
opening this in other software will give me

255191128640

I don't think we're the only one that needs to have straight alpha?

Photoshop :: How To Save A Png With A Straight / Fat Alpha

Oct 24, 2013

work in broadcast and a new piece of gear prefers png files.  I know how to save png's with a transparency, that's not the problem.  What I don't know how to do or if it's possible is to save them with a straight or fat alpha.  Right now we feather or extend the edges out past the alpha of say a logo and save it as a tif, psd or .tga.  That way once it's keyed over video or whatever, the edges look good, no black bad edging.. But switching to png files, how to make a straight or fat alpha since it sees transparency.  I mean if I feathered out the edges, a png will see that correct, since there's no alpha?

Photoshop :: How To Edit Alpha Channel After Saving

Mar 20, 2013

I have a series of files in which I improperly modified the selection set prior to saving the selection, and now around the intended viewable area there is a hazy artifact that seems to correspond to where I manually edited the selection using Quick Mask (prior to saving).

In other words, within the area of the alpha channel that should be invisible, there is actually a visible, unwanted grey-ish artifact, and I think it's related to how I was using the brush to edit the selection in Quick Mask before saving.

Now I am unable to edit the alpha channel, although Adobe's own website says that in order to edit an alpha channel, all I need to do is select the alpha channel (which I am doing) and then paint at 100% black or white with a brush to either include or exclude parts of selection set.

When I choose the brush and start painting at 100% black or white, nothing happens and I can't figure out what is happening.

The exact steps that I'm taking are below:

1) click on alpha channel (visible and ready for editing), all other channels only visible not active.

2) selecting the brush at either 100% black or white

3) attempting to paint to alter the alpha channel (I've tried painting on the actual alpha channel in Channels, and I've tried painting on the alpha channel as it appears in Layers, and neither works for me).

CLARIFICATION:

I actually am able to "edit" the alpha channel HOWEVER I cannot remove the hazy artifact. I can use 100% black or white to remove the pink/light red areas on either the actual alpha channel (in the Channels area) or as it appears in Layers, but I cannot remove the areas that are grey-ish (well I can paint them white but I can't paint them black, i.e. fully pink).

A teacher showed me a quick fix process that basically involves activating the alpha channel, inverting the selection, and then deleting everything outside of the alpha channel, and then resaving the file. That worked at one point, but now that quick fix is not working either (I am just ending up with a completely visible, white space around the intended visible area, rather than an invsible area).

EDIT (07:22 3.20.13) Also, if you look at what Photoshop is registering as the actual alpha channle, it doesn't match with what I'm seeing above, that is the black and white alpha channel appears to be as expected, and there is not the weird distortion that I'm seeing above in the pink/grey image.

Photoshop :: How To Edit Selection Prior To Saving As Alpha Channel

Mar 20, 2013

I thought that I could just use Quick Mask to manually paint with 100% black or 100% white to adjust the boundaries of the selection and then save that final selection as my alpha channel.

However, I'm discovering that when I do this, I end up getting a weird grey-ish artificat (which incidentally, I can't figure out how to remove it). How I should be properly modifying the selection prior to actually saving it.

Photoshop :: Procedure For Integrating Alpha Channel When Saving As DDS File

Sep 11, 2013

One project I use Photoshop CS4 for is painting aircraft used with Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX). Each aircraft is downloaded as a "Paint Kit".I paint and add layers onto the kit until the aircraft resembles the design I chose.  The paint kit includes a background,  base parts usually in white, and an assortment of layers adding physical wear, shading, lines and rivets you see on actual aircraft.

Additionally, the kit includes an RGB Alpha Channel and Specular Maps.  In this application, the Alpha channel provides the reflectivity or gloss on the aircraft paint.  The Specular maps provide a sheen much like the subtle reflections you see from a metal flake paint job when the sun hits it directly.

Once all painting and manipulation is complete, the kit is "cut" into specific sizes.  Once the kit is cut, each section is saved as a DDS file using NVidia tools.  The resulting DDS files are placed into folders within the main FSX program folder.  The FSX program "assembles" the sections and processes the different layers and channels resulting in aircraft that are incredibly detailed and realistic.

My problem is I don't know how to properly integrate and preserve the Alpha channel during the "Flatten Image" and when saving the file as a dds file.  As you can see in the "Layers" section in the picture, the Alpha channel is already made.  I just don't know what to do with it to preserve it and ensure the reflectivity it provides is visible in the final product.

what I need to know isn't what the alpha does, but how to properly integrate it into the final product.  I've searched for this info for the last several days, but I've had no luck in finding specific information on how to do that. URL....

Note: I was able to do this in 2008 version.

Photoshop :: Alpha Layer Vs Alpha Channel

Sep 5, 2013

any difference between alpha layer and alpha channel? I mean has to be right? I just don't know what exactly that would be if there is. I'm trying to figure out some more stable uses for computer graphics when building textures with alpha layer or alpha channels. So far I get a flicker from opengl bug when using alphas. So I'm wondering if I use Alpha layer and something with a solid color underneath the geometry if I could achieve a more stable result where alpha sorting. Possibly clearing it up where my alpha layered geometry stays on top vs bleeding through at times it seems.

Photoshop Elements :: Saving Revised Photos Without Saving Original?

Oct 16, 2012

I have started editing photos using the Photo Fix Options in Instant Fix. I have then switched to Photo Editor to fine tune my edited picture. When I use save or save as, to save the edited picture both the edited and original appear in the files. If I start in in Photo Editor and save  there is an option to uncheck that reads "Save in version set with Original" However I am more comfortable with beginning in Instant Fix and then switching to photo editor. For some reason when I go to save after switching from Instant fix to Photo editor the uncheck feature is no longer available. step by step instructions to save revised photo afterusing Instant Fix first then Photo Editor.

Photoshop :: Getting Straight Edged Stroke Around Text

Nov 23, 2011

Whenever I add a stroke to text it never stays straight edged like the text, it becomes more rounded. Question is, is there a way to stroke the text with the edges staying straight instead of rounded without having to just draw a box around it or something?

Here's a picture of what I'm going for, I'm fine with making a box around the text (there are other characters, rounded characters like an "O"), but it would be a big time saver if there was a way to do it quicker.

Stroke in Photoshop is on the left, desired effect is on the right. The letter "i" might be a bad example, however the effect I'm looking for is a stroke keeping the shape of the text rather than rounding itself.

Photoshop :: CS2 - Curving Brushed Straight Line?

Jul 26, 2012

I am still using CS2, and I am having to break up my desired curved lines by repeatedly using the SHIFT key while clicking the next point along my desired curved line. I would like to know if there is a plug-in that would let me pick the starting point as normal, hold down the shift key while I move the mouse to the ending point, and then, after I click and get the straight line with the brush of my choice, I need a way to BEND that line in the pristine shape of a circular or elliptical arc. I need some way to indicate how much arc angle is needed (from a teeny bit to a semicircle), and also how much to skew it towards either of the end points.

The way I am doing this now is

a) create a new layer and draw the straight line, then, delete everything else on this layer but the line, then show the main layer and edit the 2nd layer with warp, and then, finally, use warp to bend and skew the straight line - after all that, I flatten the image back to one layer. The problem with this method is that warp doesn't hold the edges of my formerly straight line (with crisp edges) true, but introduces indentations and juttings which I then have to go and "fix up" by hand.

b) copy the image to MSPaint, and use the bezier cure to draw the curved line I want, and then, copy it back into CS2.

If there is a way to bend my straight lines drawn with my selected brush, and it would keep the edges crisp and smooth, then I sure would like to learn how. The problem with using "paths" and stroking the path is that I cannot see how it will look while drawing the path and, even after I stroke it, that ugly path line with its anchor and control points muddles the picture and I wind up having to delete it and go back. I need to be able to see the FINAL result of bending my curved line while I am adjusting it with no artifacts to interfere with my close examination of the result.
