Photoshop :: PS 7 How Do I Create A B&W Layer?
Apr 28, 2006
I took a picture of myself standing in a pair of bluejeans.
I then duplicated a layer.
Next I want to make the back layer black and white.
Then I will take the eraser tool and erase everything except the blue jeans, thus leaving me with a cool effect.
The problem is I can't seem to make the duplicated layer black and white or I guess you call it greyscale.
My friend said to go to Image>>> Adjustments >> desaturate but nothingt happens. He told me further that their were a couple ways of getting the back layer B&W.

A link or a brief explanation of"when & why" and "how to use" a master layer when working with a multi - layered image (psd or psb) file in CS6.
I've seen a couple of tutorials that make use of a "master layer" but I don't understand the "when & why.

How do I create a blank layer to be used as my "Background Layer" in CS6? I need to do this action before importing anything because once an image is imported, the image is automatically set as the Background Layer.

I need an easy way to fix a high contrast image such as an interior home shot where the windows are blown out and you can't see outside detail, but the interior is either correctly exposed or is underexposed. Basically what i need to do is combine the correctly exposed interior with the correctly exposed windows, showing correct exposure for both interior and exterior detail. To get the correct exposure i have been taking a shot in which i meter the windows, and without moving the camera, take another shot in which i meter the interior.
Here is where i get stuck. the way i've been doing it, which takes way too much time for my purposes, is to either use the magnetic lasso tool or the polygonal lasso tool to select the area of the properly exposed windows, and then cut and paste the selections to the other layer. The problem with this is,
it takes quite a while and i usually have to go back and do some cloning around the edges to fill in the spots that got missed, which takes alot of time as well, because it usually takes me several tries to get it right. Is there an easier way?

I open something with paint and then I do crop and copy the area. Then I open up another document and paste it. Now I am trying to blend it in. I think I can use layers. Create a new layer, then add a layer mask. Then, at least that's how I have seen it online, I can use the brush tool to make the background reappear around the letters ( letters in my case). But this does not work. The brush only paints it in the background color.

way to do this from the layers menu (ctrl-click new layer icon), but is there a key combo? I use shift-ctrl-n a lot to make new layers, but often I need to make a new layer *below* the current layer.

I'm currently using AutoCAD LT 2012 and when I create a new layer and set it as current in the layer manager, regardless of what color I set the new layer to, the new layer's color remains the same as the previous one in the properties box even though the colors of the layers are always set to "by layer."

i have this pic of me i was touching up. I made my eyes stand out more, fixed up my hair, and toned down parts of my skin that the flash had made over exposed. I also used an adjustment layer to increase some shadows and contrast. Simple enough, right? so i saved it as a GIF file, and closed out. A few hours later i decided i wanted to do some focal B+W work on it. So i go and get all ready to create a new layer for the parts i had selected to stay in color...only it wouldn't let me. Not 'wouldn't let me' as in my computer was being slow. no. 'Wouldn't let me' as in the option under 'layer' to 'create new layer' was unclikable...what happened?? with any other photo i pulled up, i could do everything. with this one, i could do NOTHING. what happened that won't let me do this?

I've been looking at some tutorials lately and some of them say to create a "transparent layer." Is this a special setting for the layer or does this mean that I can just create a layer and set the opacity down a little bit?

Win7x32 and PS CS6.
To reproduce bug create any new file. Create levels layer with any mask. Activate "mask viewing" by pressing Option/Alt and clicking to mask icon on the levels layer in layers panel. Then try to call menu->select->color range.

After doing everything i can find to optimize my hardware/software for doing 3D animation in Ps Ext CS6. I still cannot render an animation to video using the Ray Traced Final setting. (Ray Traced Draft, no problem.) The last time I tried (after repairing disk permissions), at least Ps did not crash and give me the same old crash report (Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x00000007a0020000). This time I just got an error msg that my request could not be completed. (Progress?) Checking Activity Monitor, I could see that my available RAM, which was 13 GB when I started the render was now less than 1 GB (761 MB).
So, I have come to the conclusion that my 16 GB of RAM and 300 GB available for virtual memory on my HD is not enough for rendering the type of 3D animation I am trying to do. Would you agree? Also, I have read it is not good to use the same HD your program is installed on for a scratch disk, so I am considering getting an external solid state drive to use as a scratch disk.

I have a quite large Photoshop document where I've drafted up a number of pages for a website, and I require guides which are specific to certain layers or groups, and not just to the whole document. Is this possible? Any plugins which serve this purpose, or functionality I'm missing?
I'm using Photoship CS6 on a Mac OSX 10.8.3

How can I keep my selection area on the background image or layer after doing a create new layer via copy?
I am trying to make a selection and an inverse of the selection and put each on a seperate layer to do adjustments seperatly without having to go back and reselect the desired area. It seems to disappear after the new layer is created.
Is there a better way to accomplish this, what am I missing?

I want to create an image that will be composed of lots of layer masks that I am going to use to paint different effects back over someone's face. I currently have a hue/saturation adjustment layer that I used to de saturate the image and then I selectively painted that desaturated layer back over the skin of someone, I also want to add some green so I created a color balance layer and made a layer mask out of it and want to selectively paint back some green to the skin tone.
1. Does it matter in the layer stacking order where these adjustment layers/layer masks reside?
2. Any general tips for working with an image with lots of adjustment layers/layer masks?

I'm a photoshop newbie and i'm dealing with animated gifs. Lets say I create a new text layer on this animated gif and I want to move it to the last frame. Is there an easier way than what i'm doing now: clicking and holding the layer with my mouse and dragged it to the last frame. I'm asking because sometimes these animated gifs have like 500+ frames and want to know if there is a faster, easier way

Thought this was a Photoshop problem. When I select a portion of an image in Photoshop (which has come from Lightroom) and press Delete, it no longer brings up the Fill dialog; it just deletes the pixels.
After some discussion on the Photoshop forum, I see that now, when I tell Lightroom "Edit in Photoshop", it creates a file which does not have a Background layer, and this causes the Delete key to act differently. This was not the case several weeks ago, but has just started to happen. Is there any adjustment I can make to the "Edit In" settings to get a Background layer in Photoshop?

I start with a background. Then I bring up a new image which sometimes has a picture of my background on it - it isn't a pic of the chosen image. And - I don't know when to create a new layer.I have the background as layer base, then I create a new layer, then I bring up an image to paste in the layer & on the background i.e. I copy, then paste on the background, but nothing happens, and the layer I created is empty.I'm all mixed up. What is the sequence for creating a new layer, then copying & pasting it to the background??

This is what is happening,
for example, i have a layer for dimenisioning called, 'DIM.' I'm not sure when it happens but AutoCad creates new layers that are called: DIM @ 12, DIM @16, DIM @ 18, DIM @ 128....It does this for different layers as well. There must be some significance of Autocad adding a @ # at the end of the layers name.
It then changes certain blocks from the regular layer, to these new ones. It doesn't affect any block consistently. So one block 'A' is changed to the new layers, but the other block 'A' is not changed.
The only thing I did differently for this drawing set was used dxfout/dxfin to purge dgn files out of my drawing, any possible connection there?
