Photoshop :: Laptop Computer Screen Posterization
Jan 12, 2009
I am shooting RAW and opening in Photoshop CS3 with AdobeRGB profile. My desktop NEC LCD screen displays the images correctly. I recently purchased a HP Pavilion dv9910us laptop, and it exhibits some posterization, even at the best screen angle. I'm wondering if this is a problem I will be able to solve or if it is a limitation of the hardware.
17 in. WXGA screen
nVidia GeForce 7150M (shares memory)
3 GB RAM
AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60
Vista 32 bit SP1
Color is set to 32 bit, Powerplan to High performance. The monitor has no specific profile. It is set to generic PNP. My older SpyderPro doesn't work with Visa, so I can't create a profile for the monitor (unless I upgrade to Spyder3.
I specifically chose a laptop that had a graphics subsystem, so this posterization is disappointing to me.

I often will edit photos in Adobe RAW on my laptop, and save the RAW files to an external drive. When I pull those photos up on my desktop Photoshop, none of the RAW edits are seen. Shouldn't I be able to see the edits I made on my laptop? What's going on? I have both of my photoshop CS3 programs preferences set the same. Any help with this? Certainly when I edit photos on one computer with photoshop, I should be able to take those files to another computer and continue to edit them.

I would like to try Photoshop for digital art. I downloaded the 30 day trial version of Adobe Illustrator CS 6 about three days ago and noticed immediately that touching my laptop’s touch screen will only allow me to pan using the Hand Tool in Photoshop. I have never had this problem in Adobe Illustrator, as using the touch screen acts just as if I were clicking the left mouse button and dragging the cursor around the screen. I have a Dell XPS 15 - L502X laptop with an integrated touch screen (the entire 15” screen is Multi-touch sensitive). It is running N-Trig DuoSense Digitizer with the latest drivers. Is there some simple setting change that can be done within Photoshop CS6 to make it recognize a touch screen input as a normal left click and thus allow me to draw on it using the pen, pencil, or paintbrush tool? I find it quite odd that I have no problems with this in Illustrator CS6. Could it be that this tablet-like touch screen input is restricted on the trial version?
Here is a link to a youtube video that I put up showing the problem. The first program shown in the video is Adobe Illustrator CS6 using the Paintbrush tool. The second program shown is Adobe Photosop CS6 using the pencil tool. I draw the line in Ps using the mouse pad and then attempt to draw (still using the pencil tool) on the touch screen yielding only scrolling with the hand tool.

I have upgraded to both Lightroom 4 and Adobe CS6 (both 64 bit Windows versions) recently and have been enjoying the new features. I have become more and more aware of posterization when exporting from Lightroom4 to Photoshop
Something I first thought was simply over processing in lightroom has turned out to be an issue with Photoshop. I have been following a few threads in the forum regarding a similar issue with CS5
The solution appears to be, set the the Advanced Settings of the GPU to basic. Which removes the posterization completely. I have a some questions :
1) Setting the GPU to basic, am I getting the most out of the graphics card? I have a NVIDIA GEForce, GTX 550 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 .Im not sure in the grand scheme of things if this is cutting edge technology but it has served me well while on the older version of lightroom and CS6.
2) My workflow is using lightroom for hi-res RAW processing and editing in Photoshop. Setting the graphic CPU to basic will I notice a performance drop?
3) Reading the forums, on basic the CPU handles color management. Does this have an impact on the performance
Im happy to run the GPU at basic, I'm just trying to determine for the future if I would need to invest in a higher spec graphic card to move to advanced settings. But if there is no real gain running in advanced mode using this kind of hardware I can stop looking/considering an upgrade.

I'm aware that one "should" work in 16 bit and I ALWAYS do for my own stuff but for clients, I'm very frequently limited to 8 bit images because that is all they have to supply. Most civilians just don't know about this stuff.
For instance, I'm doing the graphics for a CD cover right now. Luckily the client knew enough to send me images that were large enough to work with but all of the different source images were in 8 bit. So, I'm now on the home run stretch as far as finishing this job but I have an image that could REALLY use some punching up in the way of curves or levels adjustments. I'm finding that even with what I would consider to be very modest adjustments, the resultant image ends up with a histogram with a whole lot of pretty major holes the entire height of the histogram. Now, I see absolutely no posterization on the screen but I've read that even in that case, it could very well show up in the print.
So, here I sit after doing about 10 hours of work on this project and can't really finish up the last couple minutes of work necessary for good contrast and color without screwing up the histogram. I don't want their prints to possibly be posterized but I also don't want to send them a fairly flat looking image.

I recently installed Elements 7 on my new Win 8 computer. I also downloaded a 7.03 patch from Adobe site. When the program is launched, and then sitting idle, the mouse pointer jumps around on the screen, and the "working" blue circle appears also. This happens constantly and consistently about every second. I do not have this happen with any other program.
I was having similar issues with Elements and Win 7, and XP, and Win 98 for that matter.

This happened 3-4 times when I was using the trial version and I wasn't sure which program from the trials that was doing it, but it started after I downloaded and used the Adobe Clound trials so I stopped using them. Eventually I went ahead and upgraded to the subcription and have been using Illustrator and Muse for a few days now and have not had a problem until today. I had Photoshop open and minimized, as well as Illustrator, and walked away from my desk. When I returned, the screen was blue with the Windows "shut down to prevent further damage" screen. I have a photo of the message. I realized that I had been using Photoshop the last few times this happened also. It never happened before I tried this software and stopped when I stopped using the trial.

I tried my photo merge 5 times (once with only 2 pictures) and it always crashed. I have 32 Gb RAM and a i7 3960-X CPU + a GeForce 690 GPU.

I just got a new laptop (Apple Mac book pro with OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion) and a fresh installation of Adobe CS6 and Photoshop is practically unusable. The issues are that there is weird color banding across the full size image (it looks fine in the thumbnail preview in the ‘navigator’ tab). These bands move and change. Next, when I use the selection tool it selects weird shapes. And if I attempt to fill it, the fills are not the color, nor the transparency nor the shapes that I set. That means masks can’t be used and pretty much no editing is possible. Some blog posts describe a similar problem, and propose changing the ‘Performance’ preferences .

I'm here with 2013 SP2 64 bit Build 200 and two screens. Left screen is graphics area, Browser is on the left of right screen. Graphics is ATI Fire Pro V7800 with driver 9.3.3.3000.
In video (zipped MP4) you see a cutout of both screens, think of screens changing at the left of the browser.
Now, in many cases, after doing an operation, the browser is jumping back to the middle of my graphics in the left screen.

before buying a new laptop. My question is will the following specs work well with adobe products like Photoshop, fireworks and like programs. I don’t play any games so that is not an issue. I do mostly web design and like I said using Adobe software mostly. The following is from a Sony Vio Z-series. I am leaning towards it only because it is small and compact….only issue is the graphic card….seems a little weak. However some people say it will be fine with adobe software…not for games. I need some honest opinions and please no advice to switch to Mac…thanks.Sony Vio Z:2.80GHz (P9700) Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor256GB SSD8GB DDR3 SDRAMScreen Specs:13.1" Screen1600 x 900 Resolution XBRITE-DuraView™ TechnologyMobile Broadband Built-InLED BacklightGraphics:· NVIDIA® GeForce® 9300M GS GPU with up to 2010MB total available graphics memory · Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD with Intel® Clear Video · Up to 256MB of dedicated video RAM · Hybrid Graphics System · Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset

I've recently rebuilt my laptop (XP SP2, compaq 6910p) and cannot install Photoshop 7.The CD loads to the point where I choose which feature I want (reader or photoshop), then it just stops. It's not the CD, because it installs fine in other machines. I cannot run the install from either my desktop locally or from a CD drive of a working machine.

I am currently running CS3 on a laptop that will soon be replaced. I know that I have to de-activate CS3 on the old laptop, before I can install CS3 on the new laptop. (Note: New laptop is an ASUS G71G-Q2)Once CS3 is installed I will then run the upgrade disk for CS4. What I'm trying to figure out is this: BEFORE I install the CS4 upgrade, do I need to install all the updates/fixes to CS3 to insure "trouble free" operation of CS4? or does installing the CS3 updates play no role in CS4 as they are like two different app's?I would assume that whatever responce I get here about CS3 and CS4 would also apply to Lightroom 1.4 and Lightroom 2.3 regarding updates.

My laptop has this chipset as it's graphic card: Mobile Intel® 965 Express Chipset
I'm running Vista Home Edition with 3G RAM and I just updated the graphic card drivers.
Photoshop's GPU options are greyed out, and I can't use the rotate tool. Does this chipset simply not have the capacity to support whatever the program wants, or am I just not configuring something right?
The laptop is an ASUS F80L (which has not much information online itself).
