I have just installed Photoshop CS4 Extended and am looking to enable the OpenGL Drawing function but it is greyed out. I have Dell Precision t5400 with Quad core Xeon E5410, 2gb RAM, Club 3D 8800GTS 640mb RAM graphics card on XP Service pack 2. I just updated the graphics drivers from nVidia and downloaded the AllowOldGPUS_ON.reg and restarted the PC. The option to Enable OpenGL Drawing is still greyed out.

Photoshop :: Don't Understand How To Enable OpenGL?

Nov 7, 2008

I just installed Photoshop CS4 around a week ago and as many have already said it feels pretty sluggish compared to the CS2 that I upgraded from.

I get the message "photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements..." which essentially disables OpenGL and I am sure probably has some adverse effects.

I have a modern up to date computer so I don't see what the issue is. Whenever I try to enable it when I restart it tells me to either search for updated drivers or gives me the error. I hate thinking I paid all this money for something I am not getting optimal use out of.

Specs:
Windows XP SP3
Directx 9.0c
4GB Ram
Quad 9450 CPU
Nvidia 8800GT 512MB video card (which is on their supported list)
Most up to date video drivers you can get 178.24

Photoshop :: Enable GPU - OpenGL 2.0 And Shader Model 3.0?

Jan 23, 2013

After buying Photoshop CS6 Extended due to it's amazing 3D options I realized my videocard sucked because it is a CSU and not a GPU as required. So I looked up what the requirements are to enable the GPU options and it stated that it requires a OpenGL 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0.

I have been searching for a videocard that matches exactly that without any result (I live in a country the size of a peanut that doesn't sell a 2.0 and a 3.0).But I did find shader models of 5.0 and OpenGL 4.1 and I wanted to know if that is acceptable too.

Are the OpenGL 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0 the minimum requirements and can I go higher?Or will Photoshop Extended not enable that GPU option if I do go above the requested OpenGL 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0???

Photoshop :: Enable OpenGL Shadows Before Render?

Apr 25, 2013

I'm trying to do a 3D tutorial I found on youtube.  Photoshop is not behaving the same way as what I'm seeing however.  I think the problem relates to the OpenGL rendering of the shadows.  See te example pics below.

This is the scene lit with 1 point light but not yet rendered.  The shadows on the point light are turned off.

This is the same scene if I turn the shadows on:

Finally, this is what I get if I render it:

how to display the shadows correctly on the pre-rendered OpenGL version so I can place my light sources.

I'm using a W7 machine with a Core i5, an AMD 6870 card, and 16 gigs of ram.  The video drivers were updated today.

Also, if I look at the same file on my work computer (with an Nvidia Quadro M card inside) it works fine - the pre-rendered view (with shadows) looks great.  Is there some Photoshop preference or graphics adapter setting I need to be using?

Photoshop :: OpenGL!

Mar 3, 2009

Brand new computer, 32-bit XP, 4GB RAM (sorry, but too many of my important programs don't run on 64-bit), Intel 9650 quad, 3.0 GHz, RAID array, etc. And an ATI 4850 graphics card with 512 MB DDR3 RAM (on the Adobe tested list) and it doesn't work properly with OpenGL turned on: brush lines do not complete until I start another line, or click someplace in the image (which creates another line!); preview for the stamp tool doesn't work (there is no preview); 'ghost' panels over the image stay there even when they're moved (a mouse click is needed to make them disappear). Animated zoom works (nice feature), flick panning does (not really needed), birdseye view does (also nice feature), rotate canvas does (not needed that I can see), pixel grid (might be useful); I haven't tried the others. Bottom line: if I turn OpenGL off, it works fine, but those features are absent. I've been updating my drivers as ATI has (they've done several in the past month or so),

I don't know how the beta testing was done or how this card could be on the approved list, but someone fell short.

Photoshop :: CS6 OpenGL Is Not Working?

Feb 6, 2013

I have been trying to use the 3D features of Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended and have been having no success. I have enabled the 'Use Graphics Processor' in the Edit->Preferences->Performance dialog box. I have also ensured that I have the latest version of the drivers installed. The video cards (in a CrossfireX configuration) are Sapphire HD Radeon 7970s. The thing is, when I installed Photoshop a few weeks ago, I tested the 3D functions and they worked fine. Now they no longer do so. I have updated video drivers and Photoshop since then but when I reverted back to the older drivers, the 3D features still didn't work. I have tested OpenGL in Modo 601 and Houdini FX 12 with no problems.

Photoshop :: CS6 Bugs When OpenGL Is Off?

The are some unpleasant bugs on CS6 when OpenGL is turned off. bug in PS-13.1.2(only) on Win7x32.When making selection, for example, with magic wand it`s edges are terribly blinking and shaking.

And very old bug on all versions of CS6 for win. When the rullers are visible, try to shake the canvas with, for example, hand tool to left-rigth. The rulers will be cracked with artefacts.

main bugy-feature is thaе the contrast of path`s lines is very poor on noisy midle gray areas, even when the antialiasing is off.

Photoshop :: PS CS4 With OpenGL Drawing...

Oct 28, 2008

I've just upgraded from PS CS3 to PS CS4 (default 32 and 64 versions) and I'm having problems with seeing image files above a certain size (even moderate size) with OpenGL Drawing enabled. Disabling OpenGL Drawing results in very slow image display (very easy to see the blocks being drawn one at a time), much slower than with PS CS3.

I'm running Vista 64 with latest updates. I'm trying to get PS CS4 32 running properly first, but PS CS4 64 seems to be having similar problems.

GeForce 9600 GT video card with latest driver 178.24 (updated yesterday and rebooted many times since then). That card is in Adobe's list of tested cards.

Main monitor (where I display Photoshop images) selected as primary in the driver dialog.
I put palettes/panes on my 2nd monitor.

I use Ultramon for 2nd monitor taskbar functionality. Turning Ultramon off doesn't seem to help, although I may need to disable Ultramon from launching on reboot.

No plugins installed yet in PS CS4 (32), as per Adobe kb advice.

4GB of RAM with Memory Usage set within Photoshop's Ideal Range.

For testing, I've been opening a few different size (px and bytes) RGB image files in Photoshop by dragging them from an Explorer window into the Photoshop window, then clickin in the Photoshop window to make Photoshop active and show its palettes.

First with OpenGL Drawing enabled in Performance, default Advanced Settings.

JPEG, 3600 x 2600 px, 4.5MB
- opens and displays ok (short delay before palettes appear)
- zooms and rotates smoothly

TIFF, 2 layers, 800 x 600 px, 16 bits, 2.5MB
- opens and displays ok (short delay before palettes appear)
- zooms and rotates smoothly

TIFF, 1 layer, 3600 x 2600 px, 16 bits, 54MB
- doesn't open properly, shows checkerboard instead of image, with checkerboard in navigator and layer icon in layers pane
- histogram is fine
- zooming and rotation are not smooth (jumps to new position/size)
- duplicate layer caused PS CS4 to stop working, with a close program dialog
- open PS CS4 32 again, no OpenGL message today, and OpenGL Drawing is still enabled (although I got the OpenGL Drawing message more than once yesterday)

TIFF, several layers, 3600 x 2600 px, 16 bits, 306 MB
- doesn't open properly, shows checkerboard instead of main image
- icons in layers pane look fine, same as navigator image
- checkerboard zooms and rotates smoothly
- duplicate layer is still checkerboard, back one history state stopped working / close program dialog
- started PS again, opened 1 layer TIFF, closed and tried to open multi layer TIFF again, but stopped working / close program dialog again

I then tried the same images with OpenGL Drawing disabled in Performance.

3600 x 2600 px JPEG
- ok, but slow, blocky redraw

2 layer 800 x 600 px TIFF
- ok, but slight delay in redraw (smallest of all the files, both in px and bytes)

1 layer 3600 x 2600 px TIFF
- opened ok, but slow, blocky redraw

multi layer 3600 x 2600 px TIFF
- opened ok, but slow, blocky redraw

From what I've read in various Adobe kb notes, it sounds like there's some kind of conflict with my video driver, but I haven't been able to figure it out. I even tried the registry plugin from the Adobe kb to disallow OpenGL Windows, but that didn't seem to make any difference. It didn't even stop me being able to select and use OpenGL Drawing in PS CS4.

Photoshop :: CS4 Opengl Crapness

Oct 26, 2008

I have to go into the prefereneces every sodding time to enable the GPU support.. I have the latest gfx drivers XPsp3, 8800gtx, Photoshop seems incapable of just working properly, I suppose I could ignore the error message, but it would still leave me to have go turn the stupid poor feature back on... which does actually work, but PS seems to think it needs disabling after I close the program.. wtf

btw I did follow adobes crap support docs on this issue...

*****************************
"3. Update your GPU drivers and then turn on Enable OpenGL Drawing.
If Photoshop crashes or disappears because of a GPU problem, it turns off Enable OpenGL Drawing and it writes a flag file in the preferences folder, called GPUinitcrashed. The next time you open Photoshop, this warning displays: "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer's website for the latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences."

Download the most recent version of your display driver from the display card manufacturer's site (Windows) or check to see if there's an operating system update (Mac OS).

Important: If you turn on Enable OpenGL Drawing before you update your driver, then Photoshop uses the old display driver again. If the driver wasn't updated, then Photoshop fails again. If you do not turn on Enable OpenGL Drawing, then the GPU won't be accessed and Photoshop does not fail.

But I can't get it working in XP64. I've installed the latest drivers but still nothing.

Photoshop :: CS5 OpenGL Advanced Grayed Out?

Dec 26, 2011

My current system includes Windows XP (32bit) SP3 with 4 Gb Ram, ATIV4900 FirePro video card, Dell U2711 monitor (supports 10bit), Version 8.85.7.3 of the catalysts drivers.

I have enabled 10 bit within Catalyst and went to Preferences Performance to enable the 'Advanced" mode of OpenGL only to find it grayed out. I searched and read where others had had similar issues though most were on a 64 bit system. OpenGL version is 6.14.10.10795.

My computer is using the Dell provided driver for the U2711 monitor.I am also using the display port cable to drive the monitor at its native 2560 x 1440 resolution.

Photoshop :: OpenGL Enabled But Not Working (CS4)?

Jun 15, 2012

I have having a weird problem with Photoshop CS4. First of all, let me give off the specs.

OS: Windows 7 64 bit
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 7570 (Driver Version 8.960.11.1000, with latest Catalyst Control Center)

I use Photoshop CS4 for freelance work, and one of the tools I like to use is the Rotate tool. When I first got my desktop and installed Photoshop, everything worked fine. However, recently I was forced to perform and factory restore on my desktop due to a virus.

Today I started working on something and when I tried using the Rotate tool, it was not working (I go that error window saying it wasn't enabled). I checked the OpenGL settings to see it was enabled. Confused, I restarted Photoshop and tried again with no luck.

This turned into a search around the internet to see just what is going on, but the only thing I could find was suggesting updating drivers for my graphics card and Adobe, which I have tried with no success. I have found out that some people were having the same trouble as me, but what makes my case odd is that it was working fine before the factory restore.

Photoshop :: CS4 / OpenGL Support Not Working?

OpenGL support does not seem to be working on PhotoshopCC.  The HUD color picker does not appear and when I try to rotate the canvas, a message pops up that says the rewuest could not be completed because it only works with OpenGL enabled windows.

I have two NVIDIA Quadro K600 cards (with up to date drivers), a Cintiq monitor and a new Dell workstation.  I'm using the trial version of Photoshop CC.  (I had to replace my computer recently because the old one died, and rather than reinstalling CS4 I decided to try CC and see how I liked it)

My machine is a powerful graphics computer, so it ought to be able to handle OpenGL. Under Preferences / Performance I do have "Use Graphics Processor" checked, but it does not work.
