Photoshop :: CMYK Consistency Between Screen And Print

Nov 20, 2005

I am working in PhotoShop CS in CMYK. I am satisfied with my colors in PhotoShop, but when I import the graphics into InDesign, the colors dull considerably. I take this to mean they will print similarly.

I have had issues with getting my CMYK files to print like they look on screen. Does anyone have any tips on how I could get what I see on the screen to match more closely what will come out of the printer?

Photoshop :: Converting Screen Layer Blend Modes To CMYK

Mar 21, 2012

I've created some graphic artwork in Photoshop RGB, and now its time to output these graphics to an Illustrator CMYK file.

I have a bunch of layers that I have created for lens flares / light effects and I created these via filling a layer black and then using the Lens Flare Filter and then converting the layer to a Screen layer blend.

I notice that when I convert to CMYK in photoshop I lose the effect of those screen layers, is there anyway I can get those layers to look the same in CMYK without having recreate them from scratch in the CMYK space?

In my illustrator file I have a gradient background and was hoping to bring in these transparent lens flare lighting effects to place over the top of the gradient. I was thinking I might be able to merge the layers in Photoshop but unfortunately I need those screen layers to remain transparent.

I also tried turning the layer to normal 100%, convert to CMYK, placing into my CMYK illustrator file and then changing the layer to screen mode there but its doesnt look the same, its turn transparent like I wanted but it looks like where there is transparency there is a 25% opacity white.

Photoshop :: Image Consistency For POD

Dec 16, 2012

It's the perennial problem with print-on-demand – inconsistent quality, particularly in the images. In the latest proof received, there are 24 B&W images, all quite similar in values, all 7x7cm. Despite all images seeming to have a very similar range of values, the proof came back with 4 pics looking absolutely brilliant (when one has an idea of what to expect from POD process) and the rest, not mediocre, but dramatically inferior. Blacks and crispness of the the four good images are excellent, while the rest are washed out with poor contrast.

When viewing the images on screen or printed out, the inconsistency in values isn't apparent (not that this is a method to judge what to expect from POD); the results are at least stable. I might hope for some of that consistency in the printed book, revealing poor or better quality across the board, when similar images are present. Perhaps the printer makes selective adjustments to some – which is to be checked, but until then, what are the fundamentals of optimizing images for POD?

Photoshop :: Final CMYK Print Out Color Quality

Jul 29, 2003

I'm making an ad with alot of bright colors. It's gonna be printed to a glossy photo paper for distribution, but I'm having a hard time getting the monitor colors to match the printout colors.

I started as RGB workspace, then once finished I converted to CMYK, but the colors drastically get dull.

I know that it is normal for colors to change during RGB to CMYK transition, but is there any way I can preserve those bright colors?.. (it's mostly bright orange and green.)

Workspace specs :

RGB : ADOBE RGB 1998

CMYK : SWOP V2 20%

Conversion : ACE

Intent : Relative colormetric.

Illustrator :: CMYK Color Not Showing Correctly On Screen

Jul 6, 2013

I am working on iphone case packaging that will be printed so my project is in CMYK, all settings in CMYK.  The colors on my screen look correct in CMYK but when I send it to the manufacturer it is then printing in a different (similiar) color.  Can this be from my screens not being calibrated to CMYK?

I did a few searches for rgb to cmyk converters and I put in the rgb color that looks correct and it spits out a CMYK color that looks far different that the CMYK colors in illustrator.  I am using CS6, I could use the converter for now but I would like to see the correct colors in the future if at all possible.

Photoshop :: Getting Colour And Visual Consistency In Multi GIF / JPG Image

May 16, 2012

I'm frequently creating .gif and .jpg images for web ads and these have to be within a strict 40KB size limit which is often tricky for larger formats. Now a new 'fireplace' format has been created that is an ad that is an image frame around the sides and top of a web page, consisting of two vertical pieces each side of the page and a horizontal bar along the top that links both the side pieces into a single seamless image. This means that I have to create three separate image files, each of which has to be less than 40KB and because each of these pieces is also quite large I will have to carefully adjust the images settings in 'Save for Web and Devices' to get the file size within this limit. My main problem, however, is how do I do that whilst ensuring that the visual consistency between the images is such that it isn't noticable where the three separate pieces join?

For example, if the side pieces have radically different style and colour of content to each other and the top part, saving these as separate .gif files could result in each file having a different indexed colour palette and number of colours etc, making the separate pieces look visually different and the places where they join look really obvious and clumsy.

What steps do I take to keep within the file size for the images whilst keeping the images looking seamlessly consistent? This isn't as much of a problem in .jpg but there may be times when using .gif is more efficient - is there a way to save an indexed colour palette for .gif and apply it across multiple files?

The master file is created as a single image in Photoshop CS4 and later split into three files which are saved as .gif or .jpg.

Photoshop :: No Colour Consistency With JPGs & PNGs Saved In PS

Jun 20, 2006

I made a coloured square in PS. I saved it as a JPG. I saved it as a PNG. I saved it as a PSD. I dragged all three of these into InDesign. The JPG and the PSD were the same colour. The PNG was different. Now, before you all say that PNG's do funny things to colours, let me just say that the PNG was the ONLY one out of the three that matched a coloured square I made in InDesign with the same RGB values as what I made in PS. Both programs were using the same colour settings.

Just for interests sake, I tried the same experiment in Illustrator. Interestingly, I had no problems in Illie - all 3 (JPG, PNG and AI) files were the same colour as each other AND the same colour as the test square in InDesign.

I design graphics for Scrapbooking kits which I am beginning to sell and need both JPGS and PNGS (because of transparency) for these kits. AND I need the colour to be consistent. I also design in Illustrator (where there appeared to be no problems), but obviously there are some things that are simply not possible in Illustrator.

Illustrator :: CMYK White Elements Don't Print

Jun 15, 2012

I have an Illustrator CS5 logo with a tagline beneath that is converted to outlines, all in white, zero values for all four channels. There aren't any FX, graphic styles or anything applied to them, nor are there any bitmaps. They're just compound and simple paths filled with white. The logo previews in the print dialog box and prints, but the tagline below doesn't appear in either case.

I tried several things, like the deconstruction of the letters to simple paths, which showed everything as simple paths but  nothing came of that. I also tried coloring everything with "White2" swatch, resaving the .EPS as .AI and .PDF, changing the size of the artboard, reverting to legacy, copy/paste to a new file, etc. Finally...I tried converting the CMYK file and graphics to RGB and it all previewed/printed.

I am on a MacBook Air with Lion 10.7.3. There's no print driver yet for our Canon; so I'm using a generic PostScript driver for the time being (betting this is the culprit). There are a tremendous number of print options that I don't have time to test.

CorelDRAW X5 :: Print Preview Is Showing 100% Grayscale As CMYK

Aug 13, 2012

I've been searching for this for over a week & finally thought I'd better go to the experts!

I have a 2 page document that has CMYK on one side and 100% Gayscale (with 2 Grayscaled bitmaps) on the other side. My problem is that when I go to print preview it shows the Grayscale as CMYK Separations. My printer is counting it as color instead of grayscale so we are being charged much more than the grayscale would be. I haven't changed anything in my color profile and actually deleted my ColorSettings.xml and rebooted Corel Draw to reset the color profile default. Still no change.

What I am used to (& what I need) is for the print preview to show my page 1 as CMYK separations and my page 2 as black like it used to. I do a lot of ads and need to be able to determine if there is any color in my document when there shouldn't be.

Problem number 2 is that around my grayscaled bitmaps when my document is printed there are thin black lines showing up where the edge of the photo is. None of which shows up in print preview.

I am using Corel Draw X5, Windows 7 - 64 Bit

Photoshop :: Colour Consistency - Reproduce Logo On Printed Documents And Use It For Embroidery On Clothing

Nov 12, 2012

I have received a new logo from our brand developers. The spec is

C - 0
M - 98
Y - 75
K - 22

or Pantone 1805

or R - 191
     G - 49
     B - 26

I get a different colour depending on which spec I use, and if I sample a digital document, a fourth variation on red. Am I just not understanding these colour specs? I want to be able to reproduce the logo on printed documents, and use it for embroidery on clothing. I also need to produce adobe pdf files and jpegs to email copy to advertisers.

Illustrator :: How To Convert CMYK Artwork For Spot Colour Apparel Print

Sep 11, 2013

I'm pretty new to preparing artwork for spot colour printing - it's a hoodie design in this case.

I created the artwork in CMYK originally, and have got some of the way towards converting into a 5 colour print job using Recolor Artwork, so I've got it down to 5 swatches.

However, the printer is asking for colours separated by layers, which makes sense - I think means knocking everything out so there is no overprinting - is this correct?

If so, what is the best approach to take, to avoid unnecessary work, to convert from the current artowrk, with a lot of overlapping artwork, to produce 5 layers each with vector artwork coloured with its own Pantone swatch?

Edge Animate CC :: Playback Consistency And Transparencies In DPS

Aug 7, 2013

I'm somewhat new to Edge Animate and I'm trying to incorporate simple animation into a DPS piece that my company has been publishing for the past year. A few questions:

1) Is there a "trick" to getting transparencies to work? I've had zero luck so far and I'm beginning to resign myself to just putting the entire design into the Edge composition as a work around. There must be an easier way? I'm hoping I'm missing something simple and obvious. From my research, I've gleaned that the poster image feature is a major player in all the headaches. Speaking of which, do you have to start over and rebuild a comp everytime you need to publish without a poster?

2) I've noticed that playback is really inconsistant. Most of the time, when I first swipe on a page, the animation won't play at all. Subsequent swipes, and it begins playing fairly consistency.

3) Finally, is there any guidelines for SVG settings used in Edge? I found that many of the vector files I was using in comps were messing w/playback, so I ended up subbing them out for pngs.

Photoshop :: Screen And Print Discrepancies

Oct 31, 2012

I'm running CS6 on a Win7, 64bit machine.

I've used PS off and on for a few years. Everytime I upgraded; no problem output quality is the same. But since CS6 I have a problem between my PC and print and display on other PCs. The images on my PC look excellent, vibrant with good colour balance. But if I open them on my laptop or look at them on someone else's machine the contrast is very dark, with a reddish tone. It's the same results with printing. Consequently I'm working in the dark trying to second guess what final images will look like.

I'm not sure why and it's confined just to PS as everything seems calibrated correctly becuase any of my Illustrator, Premier or After Effects projects look as they should on my monitor as well within the tolarences expected on my laptop or anyone else's PC.
