Apr 3, 2013I re-installed PSP X5 on new computer and no longer have masks from previous versions of PSP. Is there a source where I can download these legacy files?

Dec 30, 2012This really doesn't qualify as a tutorial, rather it's a reminder that various effects (including distortions) can be applied to masks to achieve interesting results.
Take this somewhat boring publicity photo, for example:

1. Make an elliptical selection, re-position it as necessary, and feather it by 20px.
2. Create a mask from that selection:

3. Apply Effects...Texture Effects...Polished Stone to the mask with these settings:

4. Apply Effects...Distortion Effects...Ripple to the mask with these settings:

The combination of the polished stone and ripple effects works nicely here, since the final effect is similar to the loose strands of her hair style.
I used the KPT Collection's KPT Noize effect to create a nebulous background and added a yellow-to-blue gradient layer above it (set to "Multiply" mode); and a bevel layer style to the text, reducing the kerning after the capital J's to -50. I also applied the Smart Photo Fix to the original photo, reducing the brightness slightly.

The Help File is no different than what was found in X3 and doesn't mention Block Size. What this slider does?
Paint Shop Pro :: Masks Is A Layer Within Existing File
Jul 25, 2012I have a psd file with several layers that includes a mask (filled in red) which is what I want to use as the shape of the image. Every tutorial has a different way of creating a mask but I can't figure out how to do it when the mask is a layer within an existing file. There's no option to save the mask to disk so I can load it into a new raster image to merge it with the image.

Jun 5, 2012I've been tasked with creating electronic versions of some older AutoCAD drawings for which only hard copies exist. There are a lot of them, so in an effort to expedite the process I thought I would try to scan the drawings and scale them appropriately so that I could just go through and trace the lines. I was planning on doing some sanity-checks of the measurements in the AutoCAD and actual drawings as well. This would save me the time of having to measure the length and angle between each of the lines on the drawing (to which there are wild variations) before drawing them in AutoCAD.
The problem is that these drawings were printed on some really large paper (Ex: 4ft by 6ft), so I can't really use a desktop scanner. My thought was that I could mount the drawings on a wall and take photographs of them using my camera instead. I would use the photographs to trace lines in AutoCAD.
Lightroom :: Can LR5 Libraries Be Viewed In Older Versions
Oct 15, 2013I have used the 30 day LR5 trial and I don't love it and prefer LR3 that I have been using for the past few years. I've created some libraries though, and want to know how I can view them if I return to using LR3 after the trial.
I didn't import the images to Lightroom, rather, I referenced them on my HD.
Do I need to export them as an older version? Or save the images in another format?

Then, following the instructions, I opened this circular mask, 450 x 450 px:
But after completing the procedure my result looks like this, with an elliptical 'see through' area instead of a circle:
If this is by design, how would I get the circular effect I want? There are simpler ways of doing it for an all black/white mask.

May 24, 2012I have a newly downloaded version of AutoCAD LT 2013 that will not save files in older formats for autocad 2004 and 2007. When trying to save the user gets the following error message "One or more objects in the drawing cannot be saved to the specified format. The operation was not completed and no file was created."
I did some searching in the discussion groups and it appears that this is a known/common issue with autcad lt 2013. Is there a work around to saving it in a format that older autocad applications can view?

Feb 18, 2014I just started using the new Indesign CC and one of the features that I miss is the blue outline that would appear around textboxes. It would allow me see where my text was and move it around. The new Indesign CC displays text, but with no outline around the text, which makes it difficult to re-adjust the box size and move around my text.
Is there a way to enable the text box outline to show when designing (not when printing) as the previous verisons of InDesign did?
Lightroom :: Older Versions Of Nikon Transfer Will Corrupt D600 Files
Oct 18, 2012As I have done for years I shoot in RAW and use Nikon transfer to load images from the card to my laptop and external drive. AFter I sort the images by subject I import them to Lightroom for the final touches. Not so with Lightroom 4.2 and Nikon D600..Adobe says if yousue transfer than 4.2 will not recognize the files and too bad ...as a company they are going downhill..I hope they correct the problem so I can import the 1500 images into Lightroom for final conversions.

Sep 5, 2012I recently upgraded to CS6 (version 13.0.1 x64) on a Mac OS X 10.7.4, and my masks are acting wonky. When I add a mask to a layer and then use the brush tool (using black) to paint on the mask to remove the mask from a portion of my image, nothing happens. If I invert the mask so that it's all black and then paint on with a white brush, I can get the effect of the mask.
But then if I happen to use the brush on a part of the image that has already been painted (it is white on the mask), that part of the mask turns black even though I'm using a white-colored brush. Is there some sort of setting I need to change? What am I doing wrong?
Paint.NET :: Way To Create Layer Masks
Jul 11, 2012I've downloaded and briefly messed around with Paint.Net, and while you can work with layers, I haven't found a way to use layer masks. I used to exclusively use GIMP, but then I found out about Adobe Lightroom, so I bought that and have been extremely happy with it. However, I can't do any pixel editing to get rid of any phone lines, or people's heads, or any other item that is goofing up my photo. I didn't want to go back to GIMP (it's not the easiest program to use), but then I found out about Paint.Net and that it uses layers.
I assumed that it would also have the option to use layer masks, as a natural extension or feature of having layers. But again I can't figure out, or have found online, a way to create layer masks.
Photoshop Elements :: Layer Masks - Can't Get White Or Shown Masks To Be Taken Off With Black Brush
Sep 11, 2012I am having trouble with using my layer masks. I can use the masks that are hidden (shown with black screen) and apply them with the white brush, but I cant get white or shown masks to be taken off with the black brush. Sometimes, not always I have trouble adjusting the opacity of white masks. I was playing around with actions I downloaded and after applying three actions to a photo, elements froze on me. I read about trashing preferences, I dont know what that does or means but I tried to hit cntrol alt shift when photoshop was opening and nothing happened. When it first opens it shows I can install the new inspiration browser ( i dont know what that is either) thinking it was a required update I tried to update and it gave me an error message, something about the installer has been mis-configured.

Apr 18, 2011I set up some selection sets thinking they would come in handy later on when I am painting. I thought I would be able to use them to paint my layer masks, but I cant figure out a way of using the selection to limit where I am painting inside the mask. I thought convert to a freeze but it seems paint layers ignore frozen areas. Is it possible, or is it a case of saving selections for sculpt and not for paitning?
