Maya :: Can Parented Objects Have Same Name?

I've noticed what I think is an inconsistency with regards to naming objects.
Say when you create a cube, then straight away duplicate it, the new object would be suffixed with another number.
If you parent those objects first then rename them to have the same name, you can use the same name.
When you unparent the objects, the names will again be suffixed with a "unique" number.
Is this the correct behaviour? Or is it a bug?

I used to be able to create quick a makeshift skeleton for things like robots by parenting the objects that make up the robot to each other hierarchically. But the past few times I've tried to do the same thing, the child objects deform in weird ways when I rotate the parent. I looked and found a few references to this in forums, but not a single solution. The idea of going through and setting up either a proper skeleton, or parenting everything to group objects seems unnecessarily complex and frustrating when there was a simple solution before.

I'm having a deformation problem with clusters. Basically, the clusters are deforming the object which they are parented to. I've checked "relative" for each cluster under the attribute editor.
Regarding hierarchies, the above is the last iteration I have tried. Before that, I tried parenting the clusters to curves first then parenting the curves to a master control. The object was also parented to the master control.
I've tried maya default of grouping individual clusters first then parenting them to either the object or the master control, but the same results are achieved.
Please see the video below.
At one point the clusters were behaving as required, but I can't reproduce the results. I was going to animate the CVs, but parenting the curve to geometry or control presents problems of its own.

I am looking for the same function in Maya that I use alot in 3DS. In 3DS, you can "Merge" (import) models from another scene (file) into your current one. It allows you to pick a single model from the imported scene to be imported into the current scene.
I know Maya has the import function but it seems to import all the objects. I just want to import a particular model.
Is this possible in maya?

i'm trying to close a gap between 2 objects to prepair it for 3d printing (a halo ODST recon helmet for halloween). i had found a bunch of papercraft models but those won't print properly as they are on my replicator so i'm trying to make the pieces thicker so they have real substance. i've attached what i've got so far.
as you can see, there is a gap between the inside and outside of the object that needs to be closed.
i've tried "fill hole" but that fills the entire space which is unacceptable. bridging is no better.
i've never taken classes for maya and don't have much money for books. What is the procedure to properly close that gap,

I'm trying to import a part from solidworks. I've tried opening the .SLDPRT file, converting to IGES (203 and 214), and STEP. All give the same result.
See below pictures - the Maya import has "dingleberries" where there should be a flat surface (i.e. some of the tubes extend when they shouldn't). I know imports are rarely perfect, and that's OK as long as I know how to clean things up. How can I trim off the extra surfaces that appeared after the import? I'd just use an extruded cut in SolidWorks, but I'm in a strange land with Maya.

I recently upgraded to Maya 2013, and have lost my Right click menu. I get an error message along the lines of "Wrong number of arguments on call to buildBakingMenus" - I'm at work right now, away from Maya, so I do not recall the error #.
When I right click objects, and certain nodes in the hypershade, it does not work. Right clicking does work when holding alt - to zoom and such.

I made a Robotic arm whose function was to pick a dropper from a beaker and pour the droplets in another beaker from the dropper and then place the dropper back into the first beaker.
I used combine to attach the dropper with the robotic arm; everything worked well but when i placed the dropper back into the first beaker and rotated the arm back to its original position all the groupped objects got scattered ...

I can't select objects using the hypergraph. My scene is opened, my hypergraph is open, the object nodes are listed, I select the node in the HG, but it's not selected within the scene... what gives?
I set all my prefs to default, and opened a new scene: made a NURBS ball, opened the HG, clicked on the ball's node, it highlighted in the HG, but not the geometry in the scene.
ps. I'm using Maya 2011 on a Mac, OS X (10.6.6).

I am currently stuck with a problem in Maya.
I need to deform a group of different groups.
I have a Guitarfretboard that is build of 3 groups.(as in the pic)
What i want to do is create kind of a "stairway to heaven". So i would need to deform the whole group and make twirls and ups and downs, like a railcoaster.
The best way that i found to do that is to set a lattice on the group. But then when I deform the lattice points the single groups wont hold together anymore and start to seperate and mess up.

I'm having this issue where when I select an object in the outline and want to move it say, to another group or reorder the objects, it changes my mouse to circle with a line through it and won't me do anything.

Its impossible for me to select those with the mouse. I think I tried everything, but still doesnt work. I have all my selection masks - ON, I have tried all the variations of the selecting tools settings. Reseted the settings, deleted the preffs folder, uninstalled Maya, reinstalled again. Problem persist on 2011 and 2012 versions.
I can select every other object (surface, curves, planes) except those poly things. The only way to select is right button - select all and then remove the unwanted from the mass selection. How to activate selection with mouse!

I need merge many objects in one for export to fbx. If I delete any of polySurface objects, mesh lowpolyHouse crushes. If I stay it, than it all export to fbx file, problem is that I need mesh object only.

We are just trying out Maya 2014 and seem to have found a little problem that we cannot seem to work around!
If we say have two object and we select one of them, if we then try to move that object along one axis, it moves a very small amount and then selects the other object, but neither move any more, if we unselect the second object and then try to move it again the same thing happens.
We are using a Wacom Tablet as the main pointing device and all three butttons are set right, and we have also tried a mouse and this does the same. We do have a 3Dconnexion Space Pilot Pro also connected but this has been disconnected to see if this caused the issue somehow but without it connected the issues is still aparent.
Works fine on 2013 no issues at all, but the problem just seems to effect the move tool in Maya 2014.
I have checked that soft selection is disabled and it is? maybe I have inadvertedly hit a shortcut sequence to switch something on or off, but cannot find anything else amiss.

I am having both objects disappear after a Boolean Union (I am going to try creating just two random objects - a cube and a sphere - and seeing if the operation works with them).
One thing that I have thought is that the resolution of the mesh might be srewing up the operation (The sizes of the polygons in the two objects is pretty different).
So that might be a factor (when I am in Mudbox, I could try not subdividing the smaller objects as much as the larger one, so that the polygons are the same size).

How I can check if an object is within a polygon face on the y axis?
On another note, would it be possible to get a world coordinates of the U or V vectors of a vertex? I had been trying to calculate it from two vertices that has around the same V values, but in some cases they don’t exist.

I am having an issue transferring an object I have sculpted in Mudbox, and trying to import it correctly to Maya. In Mudbox, both of my objects show up just fine (don't worry about the UV issue on the face). When I choose to 'send objects to Maya,' the objects display in a new scene, but the hair doesn't show up at all. In the Outliner, Maya displays an empty transform node titled 'hair,' but I can't get it to show up as a solid mesh within the scene.
Am I going to have to remodel the hair in mudbox again and just pray that the model will import to Maya without issues?

There is no motion in my meshes when using set key or auto key.
So lets say I have a cube and set a keyframe at 1 and move it a little to the right and set a keyframe at 13, between 1 and 13 there's no motion from 1 to 13, just it jumping straight to 13. I hope that makes sense, I've tired going to Animate setkey options and checked current manipulator handle, didn't worked.

So, when in object mode, I can manually input numbers to translate, rotate, and scale an object - either in the channel box, or in the attribute editor.
But what about subobjects (components) like verts, faces, and edges?
Sure I can move em around with the manipulator, but where can I manually enter in precise numbers?

i'm having a lot of troubles with a free rig i downloaded at creativecrash [URL]. I'll keep it short as i have quite a lot of things to explain: I animated my shot, and everything was ok. Now i have to shade/light/render my shot using vray, trying to create brand new vray materials; I started from my robot-character. Here comes the problems: - I can't select the polygon geometry(i asked the rigger, and he said the geometry were imported as references at rigging time). There are no geometry layers in reference or template, then there must be somthing else causing me the problem. I can access to the object via hypershade, i can click on the shape node and i can see the geometry selected, but then, when i try to access faces, i can't select them!in no way. This means i can't create selections for materials, and so i can't shade as i liked. I tried to selecte faces using the select by materials feature in the hypershade (as the character has some pre created basic materials)but again, i'm not free to assign materials where i want, and i just can use the pre-existing face selections and work on those, but it's not enough for me. I´d like to know how to move/displace multiple objects (in this case bricks) like it is done in this animation (at approx. 0:15 sec) [URL].I tried to reconstruct the effect using bigger bricks and tangent constraints, which worked kinda ok but I had to constrain every single brick manually which was rather time consuming and definitely not the approach they must have had used. Is there a way to achieve similar effect (pref. without scripting)?

I'm rigging a character for use in Maya 2011, which I'm not all too familiar with - How would I link the blend shape states for 2 objects, so when I increase the value of one blend shape for one object, it increases the value for another blend shape for another object?
I have a blend shape for the mouth open position & I need the teeth & tongue open blends to match as the value increases.
In 3DS Max I'd use the reaction manager - is there something similar for Maya?

My scene has about 10,000 objects in it, so it's tough to find that unnamed object...
It doesn't seem to matter much, but it's annoying- every time i render a frame I get:
