Lightroom :: Sharpening Process Leaves Halos Around Image Edges

View 1 Replies View RelatedBasically whilst using a tablet to draw the outline, i want to fill in the space with a colour. however, this leaves a pixellated edge around the fill, resulting in the piece looking far from perfect. how can i get around this without having to hand fill each individual pixel? is there any way to turn the sensitivity on my tablet off on the tool so that i just draw thick black lines instead of ones that get lighter around the edges?
i have included an example.
I am trying to bring back the sky in these photos without altering the bride in the foreground, or anything other objects, aside from the sky. Admittedly I didn't expose for the sky and the stop difference between the foreground and background is quite drastic. There are three pictures. First to show what the overall picture is and what we're dealing with (I've already "locally adjusted" the majority of the sky with method 2 below). Second picture is to show you a sample of the artifacts and fringing. The third picture shows a sample of the halo situation.
I have tried two things:
1) Gradient Filter - As most of you are already saying in your head, it is not appropiate in this scenario as it messes too much with the foreground (the bride intersects over some of the sky, so it would be neccessary to to drag it down over her), to the point where the drop in exposure is too intense to bring her back. So that doesn't work.
2) Local Adjustment Brush - Tried everything with this thing, from auto mask on and off for both the painting and erasing afterwords, different feathering, no feathering, different brush sizes, etc. Nothing I have tried leaves me with a satisfactory final product, that is to say, no ringing artifacts, fringing or halos around the boarder of the bride where she meets with the sky. I am completely lost with what I should do! There is very little information available in other forum posts, and most of the information available is basic at best with suggestions like: "Turn on/off the auto-mask". This is becoming a growing irritation as I have this photograph and another one where I screwed up on my exposure and just burried the sky.
Every time I use the paint bucket on something, it always leaves a small grey outline on the edges. How to get rid of that?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just exported as catalog 2 images from an older catalog ( process version 2010 into LR5. there was no way to automatically convert them to 2012 process.I had to turn on the calibration panel in Develop mode and then set it to 2012 and then copy the 2012 calibration to the other image.
As a check, I checked this by exporting 1 image that was process version 2010 into LR5 and it automatically made it 2013,
Then I checked it again, imported a catalog from LR 4.3 which had only process version 2010 images in. The import upgraded and disgarded the temp library used in the upgrade process, and again, there was no option to automatically convert the images to PV2013.
See graphic below
Which has to be a dropbox link as the add image is not working in Chrome this morning,

I want to take one image process it to make (e.g. HDR) then restart with original image and make another completely different process (e.g. B & W). Sometimes I have many ideas for a photo and I like to see what I end up with. What would be the workflow for this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I change to process 2012 on an image that has been worked in 2010 I'm seeing a big change in the image, much brighter, less contrast. Any way to closely preserve the old look while updating the process?
Also wondering what the new 2012 process brings to the image, aside from access to the new tools. Will I see a better (or just different) rendering of the image from older files?
how I would go about sharpening an image?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did a great image last night of friends all merged together.
when i turn the opacity to say 40% with a layer mask on each image, it still gives a pretty distinct edge to the pictures and doesnt blend together.
I use LR 4.2 as the routine for processing NEF files.
My question is about sharpening.
Which program between LR and PS would you like to recommend for sharpening?
My impression is that PS 5.0 produces more sharpening than LR.
Quite often I use teh brush tool on clouds, to define edges a little better. However when I do it leaves 'splatter' all over. Sometimes due to colour and texture you can't see it very well, but most times I have to cancel the edit because of this splatter.
I can only describe splatter as spurious drops of brush effect.
paint circles, align them into a square and spherize?

View 11 Replies View RelatedWhen using the Adjustment Brush to mask a portion of a RAW image so I can reduce the exposure of only a part of my photo I get an uneven effect. It appears that the mask is not affecting some pixels of the area I'm trying to adjust. The photo was taken inside a cathedral in Vienna where the lighting wasn't great so I used an ISO of 3200 on my Nikon D7000 camera. I made noise reduction adjustments before attempting to use the Adjustment Brush. A portion of the image is shown below. I have had the same problem with other photos when using the Adjustment Brush. I've tried different Feather, Flow, and Density settings without noticable improvement.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've noticed this in LR4 and now in LR5, often times when I just use the adjustment brush to increase or decrease the exposure the edge is speckled. It looks a lot like the "desolve" blending mode in PS. It doesn't happen all the time but it looks terrible when it does.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got a new computer (Windows 7) and I don't like the default "Paint" program that comes with it. I've been using the Windows XP paint program for a long time and Paint.Net was the closest thing I could find to it.
I don't use Paint to edit photos or create super detailed artwork. I use it to draw little things (the image size is usually 50x50 or 100x100 pixels) and zooming in to 400%-800%. I've used paint.net a few times but I was wondering if there was a place in the program that would let me set preferences. It would just save a little time making it more convenient and less frustrating.
These are the things that I would like to change:
1: When moving a selected item it automatically leaves a "checker board" pattern on the image. It's relatively easy to fix with the "Paint Bucket" tool. Though if there was an option to make it only leave the default area white it would be a time saver.
2: When moving a selected item it will automatically replace the image beneath where you place it. In the Windows XP program there was an option to either replace an image or to replace all other colors except white (255green+255red+255green on the custom color spectrum). Is there an option like that in this program?
3: After moving a selected image (using the "rectangle select" tool then the "move selected pixels" tool) is it possible to simply de-select the selected image without having to click on the "rectangle select" tool and right clicking? In other words, being able to move an image, deselect the image, then automatically return the tool to "line" tool?
4: While using the "Line/Curve" tool the 4 click and drag points automatically appear on it to make it "curve-able" so is there a way to just leave it as a solid line without those 4 selectable points appearing?
5: Is there a way that I can make "Line Tool" my default cursor instead of pencil?
when I select the crop tool, my image disappears during the entire crop process. I can only see the image in the preview pane. Why is this happening? I am using the most current version of Lightroom, and I am on a PC.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince I started using Lightroom and Photoshop I've always wanted to know how I can make a photo look like it does when I press alt and adjust the sharpening mask slider in Lightroom. Here's an example of what I mean:
And here's the photo while pressing alt and moving the Mask slider:This effect is just a tool to show you where the mask is being applied but I think it's a cool effect and I have a project in mind where I want to make a set of photos look this way. It must be possible in photoshop but I'm not quite sure how to do to. I've tried using a high-pass filter, converting to B&W, and inverting the colours but it not quite the same thing; it obviously tends to just look like an inverted B&W. These images however look more like those pictures you made when you were a kid by covering waxed paper with black crayon and then scratching it off in places to make an image.
When I edit my photo in "Develop" and do any sharpening in the Details menu (or with a brush for that matter), it looks great in "Develop" but then when I export it the sharpening effect is not there!. It seems all the other adjustments I make (temp, exposure,..) are all in the imported file but the sharpening is NOT . Also the sharpening adjustsments dont appear on the photo in Library either. I am not reducing the size or resultion of the photo in the export.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIn Lightroom, when editing the pictures, in the Developing Module, I will adjust the colors and sharpening and then I used the brush to add more sharpening to a face or an object. When going to the Library Module to inspect the pictures the sharpening is not there. Even when I export the pictures the sharpening goes away.
So I went to people who teach lightroom and they were stumped. and showed them when toggling back in Library and Developing modules and they would see a sharpen image in the developing module and then a non-sharpen image in the library and export picture.
I have asked this question here before and everyone was nice to explain to me their theories, but many believe it's my exporting, but it has nothing to do with my exporting, other than that it takes like an hour and plus minutes to export about a 120 pictures, which I know it is not correct, but that does not bother me more so the sharpening.
P.S. Do you think I should just purchase Lightroom 5. I am using Lightroom 4.4, which I got literally last year.
the Adobe presets delivered with LR4 for sharpening include a command line which forces a switch to the new process engine "2012" or ProcessVersion = "6.7". I do not understand why Adobe allows a general preset to include a process version change command.
As a result, these sharpening presets can not be used on photos from an older LR3.x catalog without affecting the exposure or brightness - if you do, the picture exposure or brightness or whatever is set to lower settings, the histogram shows a darkening of about 2/3 aperture. Unfortunately, as the exposure changes, no slider or number value of the exposure, brightness etc. do change - very inconsistent.
In case you would choose to develop an older photo in LR4.1 and first use the upate icon button right of the picture to update the photo to process version 2012, then the picture will convert without changes in exposure (to the new process version) and then, the sharpening preset will not alter the exposure.
Also, it is hard to understand that the command line in the preset has a different result compared to the update button.
Presets seem to be dependent on certain process versions. No consideration is visible in the software for upgrade of change management of presets vs. process versions. A hard switch by command line does not to the job - this command line should not be in the preset. OR - the presets have to be named "LR4.1 presets only".
I consider this behaviour to be a bug or nonconformity of the software.
will have to manage all manually, with a catalog of approx. 35.000 pictures.
Suddenly, as in this never happened before, I can't copy and convert my .cr2 files from my camera into my Lightroom catalog. It says that the file type is not recognized. I restarted with no change, then downloaded the 4.4 update and it still doesn't work. Here is the name of one of the files I want to import. _mg_8765.cr2
I'm on Creatie Cloud and have an older Macbook Pro running ios 10.8.3.
Recently after sharpening/editing a photo in the Develop module I returned to the Library module, only to see that the sharpening adjustements reversed. When I go back to view the image in "Develop" the sharpness returns. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. All of the other photos I've adjusted in Develop retain all changes when toggling back to Library. This is using LR3.6 for MAC.

I am finding that while reviewing / rating my pics lightroom will often lose a pic (pics located within a folder on the desktop - move them to a nas drive later as faster to work from hard drive than accross the newtork when importing and exporting and creating previews etc). I will have a pic on my screen and then use the numeric keypad to rate the pic or the arrow keys to progress to the next pic and then out of the blue lightroom announces that the pic is missing. I look at the hard disk and find that there is now a .swp and .tmp file left in the directory where the pic was. eg below
I can then either rename the tmp file back to a jpg and all is OK but I have just started dragging another copy of the image from the card again. This is not just a lightroom 4 issue I used to have it in Lightroom 3. Its got to the stage where I am now keeping a copy of all images while I do my initial shortlist just incase I lose something which frustrates me somewhat.
Capture Sharpness
There are three distinct phases: Capture Sharpening, Creative Sharpening and Output sharpening
With regards to Capture Sharpening I’ve noticed that when I import a CR2 file into Lightroom 3.6 there is an Adobe pre-set in the Develop Module. Is this a form of Capture Sharpening default?

I've just exported some pictures for the web from Lightroom 5 which had to be downsized considerably. I now find that the sharpening and noise reduction palette has disappeared entirely from the right hand tools panel. What's going on? I've tried quitting and re-opening Lightroom and also shutting down and restarting my computer. (Macbook Pro retina and Mountain Lion)
