I have been a user of Aperture for some time now and finally decided to make the switch to Lightroom and all in all i am very impressed with the whole program!
I am wanting to set up a way of 'dynamically' or at least as dynamically as possible sharing certain folders containing family images with our wider family, in the UK and overseas, rather than reinvent the wheel i wanted to see what ways people have found to do it..
when i unload my camera into my catalog adobe photoshop on my user screen my wife is unable to view the pics. is there a way where i can share the pics among everyone?i should say that when she looks on them they have red 'x' on them and can't find the file but if you change to whose ever user screen i downloaded the pcs on they are fine pictures vista

I've recently started using Lightroom 4 and was dissapointed that I was unable to share my catalog across Windows and OSX like I've been able to with LR2 and 3. Has the file structure changed in any way? I primarily use a Windows computer at home, but when I'm on the go, I have a MacBook Pro with that Mac version of LR4. All of my photos and catalogs are stored on an external USB 3.0 HDD. Though loading up the catalog on a Mac shows all of my folders as question marks. It seems that Windows reads the drive as a letter designator, ex. D: and OSX reads it as a volume. Used to before this wasn't a problem. Any different way I can get this to work specifically with this program. I am already aware that I can just load Boot Camp onto my mac and run it that way.

What I want to do is to share the LR catalog so that my kids and wife can access the database from their own accounts. I tried sharing the directory with the catalog and all the photos. But when I open lightroom from my kids's account, I keep getting an "unexpected error openning the catalog".
I am using Windows 8, 64bit
The catalog was created in my account (adminstrator)
the other accounts are normal accounts
I have searched around but all the questions ask about sharing on network drives. But I just want to share the catalog on the same machine on local harddrive. I made sure that all the other lightrooms are closed in the other accounts (everyone else is signed off) before I tried to open it from my kid's account.
I will be managing a small portion of a client's overall image workflow by updating their web prescence on a regular basis with new work and retagging/uploading old work. I believe this requires the catalog and the image library to be housed on an external hard drive that can travel between the two of us. We are both working on PC's with LR 5.3.
The workflow would look something like this:
Client downloads new images onto external hard drive and imports into LR "ClientCatalog" is created Flags Picks and Creates a Collection from those Picks.Hard drive is handed off to me where I open "ClientCatalog".Make suggested edits to images add detailed tags and metadata upload to various social media sites and websites return hard drive to client
Is there potential problem with this workflow? My assumption is that if everything is housed on the external hard drive then there are no worries about the catalog containing all the latest updates. Are there any "safety protocols" you would add in to this workflow (besides mirroring everythign on another hard drive)?
With my Imac (Osx 10.8.3) and L 4.4 the Pictures folder is frozen. I can acces pictures but I can not import new pictures or delete or remane or move. It looks like the Pictures folder is locked. I can do everything if I move up the the "Myname" Folder. both version L4.4 and Imac are in French.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just installed the trial of LR3 and I'm already having problems. When I try to "import" photos, my pictures don't show up. All that shows up in the preview thumbnails are grey boxes where my pictures should be. LR acts like it is loading my pictures, but when the pictures should be fully loaded, there are only grey boxes. If I hit "uncheck all" they will begin to re-load, but still the pictures will not show up. If I go to "Develop", the levels and such of the photo will show up and I can alter them, but it doesn't do anything because the photo I am editing is just a grey space! I tried altering the preferences for the file types to see if that may be it, but the pictures still did not show. I also tried using different folders of photos, but they all did this weird grey space thing.

Lightroom aside, the way I have my photos organized are like this. Follow along with the photo!
In the My Pictures folder I have a few folders for each year. You open up a year, like 2011 and it opens up each photo session I did. For example if I went to the beach on March 25 I would make a folder titled March 25, Beach Shoot. Inside that folder would be all of my pictures from the beach.
Well in lightroom I imported everything and it all shows up as various folders. There are no years, all the years are crammed into one section in the module. The folders section under my C drive.
Its really hard to find certain photos from shoots. I dont care to look through shoots from 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 when I went on a shoot yesterday, in 2012.
What is the best way to organize all my pictures from various years? How do others do this? I bought a Lynda membership for their video lessons and took a 5 hour course on how to organize Lightroom and the guy in the video was dealing with like 150 shots. I’m dealing with almost 20,000.
Is there some reason I can't print HDR pictures in LR 5?

Since I'm using a Mac Computer and and iPad, I'd like to continue to USe iPhoto to share my pictures with the TV and other Apple products. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out a nice workflow - means how to import pictures in raw, work with them in Lightroom and than finally export as jpg and ideally import automatically into iPhoto. I can click in them in develop mode and work on them so they are in the program. After working on them they appear in the catalogs until I develop other pics at which point they switch to the grey box again
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the map module, I put a selection of pictures on a location, but I didn't find the way to drag the group to adjust the location.
This can be done with an individual picture : see screen cap below.
But it cannot be done with a group.
I tried several usual modifier key (alt, shift...) but all I can do with a group is navigating through the map.
Plus when the thumbnails of the groupe are displayed, one cannot cycle back from the first picture to the last one. See screen cap below :
I use Lightroom 4.0 64bit (Camera Raw 7.0) on a Windows 7 Home Premium.
My Problem is that the pictures are darker after loading in the library than while loading. I prefer the brighter version than the darker, so what is the problem?
