Lightroom :: 3.5 Opens New Images In Old Process
Nov 10, 2011
Using Lightroom 3.5. It seems to me in the past that my images would import and the 2010 process would be applied automatically. However, no matter what I do, I'm getting to the "!" on my new imports. But I guess I have forgotten what to do to force Lightroom to default to the 2010 process.

I have thousands of images. I have found that a catalogue can only process about 3500 images without slowing down greatly. This means I have to create multiple catalogues to process my images.

I have Lightroom 3 version 3.6 installed on my MacBook. I then upgraded to OS X 10.8.2. Since the upgrade when I try to import raw images from my Nikon D3100 camera I get images to preview and select but when I select and try to import I receive a message saying that there are no images to import and then the import process shuts down. I have also downloaded the most current version of Java RunTime. How can I fix the import process and resume using Lightroom?

I want to take one image process it to make (e.g. HDR) then restart with original image and make another completely different process (e.g. B & W). Sometimes I have many ideas for a photo and I like to see what I end up with. What would be the workflow for this?

I use the Lightroom 4.1 export feature to export my HDR panorama images as 16 bit tiff in a temporary folder and after that to open the images automatically in PtGui Pro 9.1.x. The problem is if I export more than 25 images PtGui Pro starts one time for the first 25 images, then a second time for image #26 till 51, and so on. This happens during all my test with multiple image formats like 8 bit tiff with/without compression or with jpegs. It makes no difference whether the temporary folder is located on an SSD or a regular hard drive.
Additional I tested LR4 Export to Hugin 2011.4.0 (32Bit) and Gimp 2.8 (64Bit) and the result is the same like with PtGui Pro: After the 25th image a new instance of the program started.
Because of this behavior in different programs, I must assume that the fault must be with Lightroom. Is there any hardcoded limits by handover of pictures to external programs?
(Windows 7, Lightroom 4.1 and PtGui Pro 9.1 are 64 Bit versions)

I have been using Lightroom 4 with a subscription on my personal computer. I am now taking a class at a college where they have Lightroom 2 on the computer lab's computers. Can I use/convert a lightroom 4 catelog or .dng picture from 4 to 2 without losing my editing work?

It seems as if there is no rhyme of reason as to how the import process presents the previews to select for import. I did s shoot last night and the images are spread out over different areas between other photos that I took in the past. Shouldn't they just be sorted by image name so they are presented together?

I just upgraded to LR4. I have a number of images that I converted to black and white using Silver Efex pro directly from Lightroom 3. I also have scans of images from black and white negatives in my catalog. When updating these images from process 2010 to process 2012 in LR4 each image becomes ever so slightly warmer (dirtier) on the screen. I noticed this because when updating the process I checked the review changes via before/after box. Some of the images where tweaked a bit in lightroom 3, others not. Strange thing is that when I run the cursor over the images the RGB values in the histogram are exactly the same in the before and after images.
I would have to say the before looks cleaner and more neutral. I don't mind using process 2010 for previously worked on images; however, it does seem to defeat the purpose of upgrading.

When LR4.x sees an older image it shows me the exclamation mark. OK, yes I will be updating... so the next step is a side by side. I could skip this, but it can be interesting to see where the subtle differeces will be. I know about the backslash key as a way to close the side-by-side. Up to today it always closed the *old* (2010) version and I sailed off into whatever editing was needed.
Today the backslash is always placing me in the older version "Before".as if I chosen "do not update"? ...but I *did* click "Update".My LR4 book (M. Evening). which I generally like, was written before the interface got locked down as there are some inconsistencies even with 4.0, so looking there I find nothing that works on this exact flow of events.
What am I doing "wrong" for the 4.3 interface. Hmmm, I just updated from 4.2 and that's when LR started leaving me in the old process.

This issue occured shortly after update to 4.2, but not directly after. I am using windows 8.
The issue that occurs is after importing images they are adjusted automatically to develop module cross process 1. After dealing with this annoyance for a bit of time I realized that I can not even "RESET ALL" the images to delete the adjustment. In delving into other images that have been in my database for quite some time, I have tried to "RESET ALL", which resets images to CROSS PROCESS 1. I have never set import to automatically adjust.

I have a batch of 1000 images that all need to be processed with the exact same levels adjustments and the exact same crop command. I recorded the necssary actions in photoshop, and I can now open up approximately 20 of my images and batch apply the actions to all 20 images automatically. The trouble is that I have 1000 images to process like this, and I can't open all 1000 in photoshop at once; it just kills my machine. I don't want to do the whole 1000 in little batches of 20 either. I'll be getting a new pile of 1000 images to process like this every day or two, so I need a way to do the whole 1000 automatically without user intervention.
Is such a thing possible?
I'm a software develoeper by profession, so if doing this sort of massive batch processing requires any command line work or scripting then I would totally be up for that.

I was wondering if there are some Photoshop filters which are very slow in processing images.
For example images of 0.2GB, 0.5GB, or even 1GB can be processed in few seconds with all filters? Or there are some filters requiring a longer time, something like minutes?

I frequently use a script to resize .jpgs from 3600x3600 to 1000x1000 dpi to save space on my hard drive. After resizing 300+ .jpgs last night, I found that they all retained their original file size. An image that started out as 3600x3600 dpi with a file size such as 3.5mb that was resized to 1000x1000 dpi using the script in X4 still had a file size of 3.5mb when it should have been considerably smaller than 1mb. I relaunched the application and rebooted my computer but no change. To fix the problem I had to run the .jpgs thru the batch process again using the same script but in X3.
The script I was using was created in X3 so I tried creating an identical script in X4. Regardless of which script I used in the X4 batch process, the same thing happened.
This problem seems to be unique to the script and/or batch process. I can open a .jpg file in X4, resize it from 3600x3600 to 1000x1000 dpi, save the changes, and the file size changes accordingly.

I have a folder of 50 images. The images are all different sizes and dimensions (ranging from about 400x600 to 1600x900).
Separately, I have a little design on a canvas in HD dimensions (1920x1080).
The end goal is just to be able to lay out all the photos on the center of the canvas as 50 new individual images (with the HD dimensions of the background canvas).
Obviously, to load in 50 unique images and then export each of them would take a long time. So I was hoping that there is a way to both (a) automatically combine multiple unique images to a common background, and then (b) export them all.

I have a batch of 500 jpg images all in different sizes 732 KB, 634 KB, 664 KB etc.
I need to compress / save for web down to 130 KB the entire batch. I've managed to create an action which compresses them lower than 130 KB at different sizes depending on how light or dark the images are, but still not to an exact number. Is there a way to create such an action or script? I'm working off of Photoshop CS5, iMac 10.5.8.

I know how to batch process images to place a logo or watermark on an image. Normally the image is different every time and the exact same logo is placed on all the images.
In this case the image is exactly the same every time but i need it saved in a folder 100 times each with a different logo. So essentially a reverse of the normal process. Same image different logo's.

I cannot figure out why Lightroom keeps opening by itself. I thought it had to do with the backup software I installed that was syncing my files. But I uninstalled that software. It opens to the import dialog window. If Lightroom is already open, it will maximize that window and beep.

I'm using Elements 11. In order to add watermarks to many JPG pics at once, I use the function "Process Multiple Files".
I select a source folder and a destination folder, and adds a three digit serial number to each file. I do NOT tick the checkbox marked "Change picture size". After that I define the watermark I want printed on my pics and hits OK. All the files in the source folder are processed and saved, with a new name in the destination folder. Fair and square.
But. The file size of the new file is heavily reduced, compared to the original. It goes from 10 MB down to 500 KB (in general). Why is that? Is there any way I can prevent it?

Everything has worked perfectly until today. Yesterday evening, I received an update notice from Adobe for an update called Adobe CSXS INfrastructure CS6 and I agreed to let install. It installed.
That seems to be where the problem started. Now, when I send an image from LR to Photoshop, it does not open. The "Edit in" command isn't working. PS opens, but the image does not appear.
I just downloaded and reinstalled PS CS6. I then asked PS CS6 to update, which it did. When finished, there was an error saying that Adobe CSXS INfrastructure CS6 could not install. Error code: U44M1P7
The good news is that now it all works again! So, the problem lies in the Infrastructure update, which I will not allow to update again.
Windows 7, 64 bit
Photoshop CS6, all updates
Lightroom 4.1, all updates

How the PMS color palettes "simulate" on screen how the color will print on different substrates (glossy vs matte vs uncoated paper). That's great for comps, but if you convert it to CMYK to print it, and the values are representing a "simulated" color it won't look correct (by that I mean come close to matching the spot color). For example, the uncoated palette simulates the color by making them appear a bit washed out on screen - pretty good visual simulation. But it might do so by adding black and cyan to orange for example, etc. - effectively dulling the original color.
So if I convert that to CMYK within the new Pantone + color palette, and then send it to the printer - it won't appear as it did on screen, it will dull the end color even more because it's converted the color to the dull simulated version - what a disaster! It's only doing half the job - showing us what it should look like on screen. In order to be truly efficient for design professionals the CMYK conversion might remove black and cyan completely to effectively brighten the color in the final output on uncoated paper. I would prefer it just stick to the standard conversion, which Pantone did have as a standard palette option (PMS to process), and then I can adjust if I think it's necessary.
Any corporate branding system will likely start with a PMS spot color palette for the identity. Then it will build into many different adaptations - full color brochures, large format banners and trade show graphics, website, advertising. So any corporate branding system will need to have PMS, CMYK and RGB versions of their main corporate color palette. There was a standard for these translations that was automatically consistent in the Adobe software and that is now all over the place, so it relies on individuals manually adapting the color mixes for final use - what a great way to screw things up.
