Illustrator :: Use Object As Selection Path?
Jul 25, 2012
I know in photoshop you can make shapes with the pen tool and then covert them into a selection path.I was wondering if there is such similar feature in Illustrator
Â
For example with the picture I posted here, what I want to do is be able to select the objects that are in contact with the black object on top without having to individually select them or use the "lasso" tool
Â
It would make things easier with a "Select all objects under or above" option, theres only the "Select next object under or above"

Once you've used a path to put type on, how do you get the path back? Everything I do to recover the path deletes it.

The problem is that it's only loading the outline of my path as the selection. All the inner areas aren't included, and I want to chop them out as well

I have a figure as below:
Â
You can see that the red circles intersect the blue one twice each. One of these intersects (the lower one) should be below the blue circle while the other should be above the blue circle. How can I make this happen? Can I use the shape builder tool somehow?

I have a created a spiral path and added type to it. This spiral circles a planet-like object. This object is not completely circular, therefore overlaps some of the spiral. I would like the type on the spiral to wrap these protrusions. And I have tried the usual way of applying a text wrap (object > text wrap > make). The type on path doesn't seem to recognize the text wrap.

In CS6, when you apply an effect that somehow expands the appearance of an object, for example by making multiple clones, all of these clones become selectable. If you click on or drag-box an area that includes these clones, the original object will be selected.
Â
is there a way to make CS6 only select an object if I click on the original vectors?

I am trying to record an action to find the center of a polygon with the following commands
Â
1. Select the object
2. Copy and Paste in Front
3. Select > Object > Direction Handles
4. Cmd+X (Cut); do not deselect
5. Object > Path > Average: choose both axes
6. View > Guides > Make Guides
Â
All is good & well except that step 5 never gets recorded as an action step.

I'm working on a project and I need to use the free distort tool + ctrl (command for mac users) but it won't work. I found out that I need to convert it to a smart object, from another disscussion, but right clicking the name of it in the layers menu isn't working. I'm using CS6 by the way.

Is there a way to determine which object in a selection is the key object? For example: draw 10 squares on a layer, select all of them, click on one of the 10 and it becomes the Key Object (heavy border) for things like Distribute Spacing on the Align pallete. I can determine that a particular object is selected via ActiveDocument.Selection.PathItem[n].Selected = true/false. But I can't figure out how to find out if this is the KeyObject. The ultimate goal is to modify the below script so that it uses the KeyObject as the reference and not the object on the bottom-most layer.
Â
Here is the Script - from [URL]
Â
mySelection = activeDocument.selection;
if (mySelection.length>0){
if (mySelection instanceof Array) {
[Code]....

I don't have any particular speed issue with illustrator CS6 in general. However there is a massive speed problem when I'm trying to select on object on the artboard with a single click.
Â
When selecting a object by creating a "rectangle" over the object it works fine and normal speed. When clicking the object to select it, nothing happens for about 3/4 seconds, then the loading little rainbow circle appears and loads for another 3/4 seconds...

When I click and drag with the direct selection tool, I'm getting a drag on the object rather than a marque for selecting points. As soon as I click, the tool switches to the black arrow tool. Did I mess up a setting somewhere? I'm not using any modifier keys.

Having made a (ex circular) closed path within a (ex square) path, I want to turn this into a selection in which the inner circle is omitted from the selection. But when choosing "Make Selection", only the first option,"New Selection" is available, the other three are grey (Add to, Subtract from and Intersect).

When I select an object and pan to make another selection the first object "deselects". The object(s) will stay selected until I pan and as soon as I start to pan the grips go away and the object(s) is deselected.

I have some negative space I created(black area, see first image) that I want to fill with type, not just a simple fill.
Â
Basically I want to create the negative space from a bunch of small minus signs(-) that need to line up as they go across. If I type on each path one at a time as the text doesn't line up that way. This needs to be one continuous path. (see second image)
Â
Unfortunately if I add them together, it creates a compound path, which you cannot type on, unless I am mistaken? So I need them to be a path, not a compound object.

It seems that the method of control-clicking on a path in the paths panel no longer makes the path into selection you have to use the load path as a selection button in the panel to achieve this. Is this a problem on my system or is it a general change?

I've tried every permutation of copy and paste; I renamed the path to path. It looks like a path when I add stroke, but it does not behave like one. I can't cut it or join it to any other path. It remembers it's text path status. I'm running OS X 10.7.5.

I accidentally converted a path to a text path. I searched the forum for how to convert it back to a regular path. The answer I found said to select the path and hit Command+C+F. This gives me another text path! I now have at least 6 copies of the path in my files but they are ALL text paths and none are visible with a stroke.

I completed my path and clicked Load Path as a Selection. I have 2 cut out areas (holes) in the path, and the selection process did not include the holes, even though the path shows them. I had the button pressed "exclude overlapping path areas" when I made the path. How do I get the path to select the outline, minus the "holes"? Kind of like a coffee cup profile with the hole in the handle excluded to show just the outline of the cup.

I have an image, and I want to add some text along a curved path beneath it. Imagine the motto beneath a coat of arms, or a product or company name beneath a logo.
Now, I tried using the text tool to add the text along a path, and I think that I now understand how that works.
Now it turns out that there is a feature missing that I would like to see, which is that text justification should make the text conform to the ends or centre of the path... by this, I mean that if I draw a path and the text is too short to fill the whole of the path, I should be able to centre the text along the path.
The way around this that came to mind is that if the path is a circle then I can place my text starting anywhere, and then rotate that layer to centre the text beneath the image.
So I make a circle selection, and convert the selection to a path... but the path seems to start at the top of the circle (I don't now what you want to call it: 0°, 12 o'clock, top dead centre, North?) and go clockwise... meaning that if I rotate my text to be below the image it will be upside down.
My work-round is to create a temporary layer and draw a circle on it, then use that as a guide to create a path along part of the circle in an anti-clockwise direction.
But I thought that there might be a mechanism for easily swapping the start and end positions of a path,another, better way if placing text below an image,a way of centring text along a path.
