Illustrator :: Photo Based Pattern In Perspective
Jul 30, 2012
I am drawing a house in perspective, and I have a photo of shingles. I used "Image Trace" to convert the raster image of the shingles to vector, and made a new pattern with it, but I can't get that pattern to appear in perspective on the grid.

I am using the perspective grid to make a 3d looking building. I want to use a brick pattern for the sides of the building. I am having trouble makeing this look right when the perspective is skewed a lot (see right brick wall), the left brick wall isn't too bad. I used an envelope mesh 1 2 rows and 1 column. Is this the only way to preserve pattern when skeweing an object?

I'd like each side of the perspective grid to match the two different angles that are the sides of this building. I'm trying to get something done using it and have never used it before.

I have an ipart that will has the length and a quantity of patterned features controlled by a table. I've created a work plane that I'll be using when I take this part into an iassembly. The problem is that the features I used to create this work plane (midplane between two parallel planes) do not exist in (2) of the (3) members...so it gives me an error message. I've tried adding the work plane to the table, but 'exclude' isn't a drop-down (and typing it in doesn't work). How to make the work plane "inactive" for those particular members?

I played with the feature a bit and understand how to create the patterns. Problem is when I go to fill in my 12x12 space there are seams. I have chosen different sizes in the pattern window but all show up with seams when I fill the larger space. Am I doing something wrong or is the largest size you can create with this tool seamlessly only 9x9?

I love the new Pattern Maker in CS6, but I keep running into a problem:
When I create a pattern that is NOT tiled in Grid (i.e. Brick), it usually works without any problem. But once I save and re-open the file, opening the pattern in PM again will show this message:
A clipping mask was created around the pattern tile bounds to preserve legacy pattern appearance. For best results, release the clipping mask when changing the tile size or editing art that overlaps the tile edge. I would then find that, instead of a single motif layed out in a Brick tile, I would have one complete motif in the center and four quartered motifs on the corners of one clipping box. This is tiled in a Grid pattern to emulate a Brick appearance.
So long story short, what's supposed to be a Brick tile turns into a Grid tile that's faking a Brick tile.
Is there a way to keep the simple Brick tiles?

i'm using illustrator cs5. making a pattern containing a pattern. i have some illustrations that i've put a simple polka dot pattern behind. in order for illustrator to accept it as pattern, i've been expanding the polka dot part before dragging it over to the swatches panel. however, when i do this it slows everything down tremendously and usually makes the system crash.

I'm working on a sticker with a Big Ben style clock on it. I've created it using the 2-point perspective ability in Illustrator. Unfortunately, I've decided that I want it to feel "taller" than when I started, so I need to shift the perspective. However, when I use the Perspective Grid Tool and adjust the ground or horizon line, it only adjusts the grid, not the artwork. Is there a way to have the artwork adjust with the grid so that I can move the artwork around in 3D space to find the right perspective?

I often want to extrude 3D type the non-realistic way -- that is to say, type untilted, with the extrustion extending geometrically in some direction (like 45 degrees) with no perspective illusion. Is there a way to automatically do that in Illustrator?
It seems the 3D Extrude feature requires that the type be angled for the extrusion to be visible.

Are there any limitations to which angle/perspective I can use in Illustrator? I am trying to create a picture (a mix of perspective and 3d look a like objects) that has an angle of about 70 degrees. Almost top looking down.

How would I go about doing something similar to this in Illustrator?

How to use the perspective tool and i understand that i can draw a grid onto this but the grid always seems to be out of whack when i do and the line spacing isn't at all perfect. What i want to be able to do is draw a grid with equal spacing and have the ability to warp this so it looks all bent up going off into the distance.
I can see this is going to be something that i have to draw in manually but i'm kind of hoping that i can have the bulk of the job done for me.
However, if i do have to draw it manually, how would i go about spacing the lines equally along a wafty curved line???

Another question: If you write a square with the rectangle tool in illustrator and you select a face in the left up corner, is there a way to make the square how can i explain... You move the swuare on theat face with the mouse and when it reach the "border" it will start move on the other face, just like a wall, if you put a piece of pare in a corner, the paper will assume the shape of the corner. Is it possible to do this instead of create 2 square and merge them in the corner?

I'm trying to make a 3D cross section of a building in Illustrator CS5 and I've gotten a lot done already, but now I cannot transform the objects in 3D perspective space.
See Attachment: I can draw and position them in perspective, but when I select the "Perspective Selection Tool (red)" and select an object, the handles in the corners / sides are not visible anymore (blue).

I am attempting to wrap some 2D text around an object, which has perspective. See example below:
The above is my attempt at wrapping the word "NEIGHBORHOOD" around the object. What I did was Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Mesh... and just approximated how it should look by using a combination of guides. There has got to be a better, more precise way of doing this in illustrator.

I'd like to have a document where I have type skewed on both sides of the perspective grid. I know how to put it on the left side of the grid: Create the type, get the Perspective Grid Selection Tool, select the type and bring it onto the grid and it skews to the angle of the grid. However, when I try to do it on the right hand side of the grid it doesn't allow me. It only lets me angle it on the left hand side of the grid.
How can I get it to write on the right hand side too?

Looking at the AI file available here (in the Public folder of my Dropbox), why the text takes a gradient when I place it on a perspective grid? I'm not able to see anything in the Appearance panel that gives me a hint. It may be obvious to someone without even needing to open the file . . . see pictures attached.
