I have a problem, gaps are visible between the steps when using 3D bevel on text in illustrator CS6, even after expanding appearance. It looks bad in illustrator and rasterized in photoshop, which is where I want it.
View 11 RepliesI need to get the visible portion of a particular layer in the final image.Lets say i have 4 layers and some portion of each layer is visible in the flattened image i would like to get the portion from each of the layers. The input will be in xcvf format.I will ideally want to automate this and output to file in some format looking like this,
Layer1 ---> Co-ordinates of visible polygon from this particular layer in the image .
Layer2 ---> And so on.
How to proceed with the script. I think brute force is to take each non-transparent pixel and and find the same pixel in all above layers if it is not found it will be added to the region.Or something exists like selection from alpha combined with multiple layers ?
Or if there is a way to find out for an image with all layers visible which pixel came from which layer ?
With shapes that are intended to fit exactly with one another, such as shapes created with pathfinder>divide I find often that there are very small cracks between the shapes and that these will show up if the shapes are exported to Photoshop in a more pronounced way.
What's the workaround to 'seal' one shape to another and rid the result of these gaps?
Joining the shapes is not an option as they are different colours.
I try to create a patternbrush using an image. Image is created in PS and lines up nice horizontaly. Droping it into Illustrator. From there I drag and drop it onto the brush panel and create a patterbrush. I also include an empty rectangle to control the spacing ( suggested elsewhere ? ). If I apply that brush to a curved path there are always little gaps between the segments. How can I construct the brush without the gaps? There is a denimseam brush within Illustrator that does exactly what I try to achieve except I can not.

They do not appeare in the illustrator file or when saved as jpeg, png, etc only PDFs. I have been using Illustrator for a couple years now and this has not happened in previous versions I've worked with (CS3, 4, and 5)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use the 3D 'Extrude and bevel' tool on a complex shape (a map of the UK)The vector is a compound path, when i apply the effect when its quite small it works, however when i increase the size of the shape the outline fails to render properly and hence is not filled as it should be, there are gaps in the image.
I have scale stroke and effects turned on.If i try to apply the effect on a version that is already the size i want it i get the same problem.
Drew a path in Illustrator - made it a compound path. Made a clipping mask with another object inside it. When saved as a pdf, there are these strange white gaps in the stroke of the path.....
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I use the knife tool on an shapeit leaves a gap where I slice. First I thought it was just an illusion in the program but it stays even after I've exported the image (both by "save as" in illustrator and "export" in inDesign). I've been careful not to move the shapeafter I used the tool so I don't think that should be a reason.
I've tried on different types of shapes like normal circles and more complex shapes. I've also attempted to start a new file from scratch but with the same result What could the reason be? Is there a setting I should be aware of?

It also looks the same if I place it in inDesign and then export to pdf.
EDIT: I don't know if it is important but the size of the shape is about an A4 or there about.
I have a brochure that was supplied by a client that I have to re edit to fit more text.I cannot get words to break causing gaps in text.I switched hyphenation on and of, word break on and of without any change in text.

I can see it is detecting some gaps but I was wondering what the custom gap option does? and if I could use it to close the specific gaps I want to close. I figured there would be a way using the pen tool so I drew a straight path across the edge and tried to join the paths together using command j but it didn't seem to work :/ I am quite new to illustrator

View 6 Replies View RelatedI started to use Illustrator since CS2 and done heaps of shapes using the 3d feature.ever since cs5 and beyond, ive encountered a problem when ever I import or copy paiste from illustrator into Photoshop my 3d shape tends to have missing blend steps. I'm setting it to 256 blend steps to get a smooth transition but when i import my Ai into ps or copy paiste it notice that it leaves some small gaps in between the blends. Now does this happen to any other users?
On the left is illustrator using 3d and on the right is the copy paisted/imported Ai file,ive put a red shape behind the yellow ace of spade to make it clear that the red is noticeable.
I am recently having a lot of fun after I discovered the power of blending. So here is my "protocol": I create two similar shapes, I make sure that they have a colored stroke, I use the blender, then I modify the path with the pencil, and I get this kind of results
I am quite happy with this, because of the fake 3D effect that it generates. I kind of understand that the "3D- shading" effect comes from the stroke color. However, this method has its limitations because:
- it only works with a stroke
- it gives different aspects depending of the number of steps.
Is there any way to smooth the effect created by the strokes to avoid the segmentation seen of the picture above?
Ideally, the best tool would be some kind of "extrude+blend on free path" tool, but it doesn't seem to exist in Illustrator yet...
Okay, So when you use a clipping mask there can sometimes be a lot of art that is invisible. If you "Select All" you'll get a rectangle only around what's visible. I want the bounds of that rectangle.
I tried itterating the art but I don't think that the art type is the best way to figure this one out. And if you use AIGroupSuite to test if an art group is "clipped" with GetGroupClipped, you get the bounds of the larger art that I'm trying to avoid.
I didn't see anything about bounds of a "selection" in the docs.
I have windows XP professional installed with IE8 browser. I am trying to access a site which has some SVG images but I am not able to see them at all. The prompt for downloading Adobe SVG viewer also does not work.I cannot install IE9 because XP does not support it. Installing Chrome also does not work. Any proper plugin to view the files on Chrome.

If I open the help-file in Illustrator, select that I want an answer for Illustrator (the icon to the right of the search-box) WHY do I get answers for InDesign, Bridge and other programs?WHY not just for Illustrator? In Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid I have the Show Pixel Grid option checked but when zoomed in over 600% the pixel grid does not appear. Am I missing something?
I created a document with linked images. (png and psd files). Although all pathes and filenames are the same and even when i klick on edit original files i se them in photoshop i do not see them in illustrator. even if they are on top level.

My gradient fill tool controls, that normally appear over the selected gradient-filled shape, are no longer showing up.
I have multiple layers but only want to save the currently visible elements objects out in a PDF or JPEG, how do I do this without having to tediously double click each layer and choose "do not print" (layer).
Would be nice to have a preference in prefs to "not print hidden layers".
I've been using Illustrator for many years but I ran into a problem today I've never seen before. I have a feeling it's something simple that I've overlooked.
All the objects in my project are invisible. When I hover over them, the object edges appear, and they retain their color if I double click them to put them in isolation mode. But that's it. Exported images are just white spaces the size of the artboard. All my other files display as they should, it's just this one.
I worked around it by copying and pasting the objects into a new file. So I think it must have something to do with the settings in this document.
I'm using CS5 on an iMac, running OS 10.6.8.

If I click off the line and back on it, it still says that it is 70pt, but this is not apparent! Have i clicked on something that prevents me from altering the line weights?

how to get/determine the visible bounds (top+left coords and width+height or Rect structure) of a group having a clipping mask or several masks? When a script asks for Visible Bounds, Illustrator provides the coords/size of the group like it does not have any clipping mask. So, you see a circle of 10px diameter (and these are the actual visible bounds of this group), but Illustrator says that the visible bounds are 50 px wide and 70 px in height.
And what to do if the group contains multiple clipping masks of different shapes/sizes?
The bottom of my layers palette is below the visible part of my computer screen...becasue I am now working away from home on my laptop (and the layers palette is showing up the same size as it was when I last used Illustrator on my large monitor screen). How do I re-size it, so I can use the items at the bottom of the palette?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have encountered this issue in a pdf file that I generated using my R (statisitcal language) scripts. The file contains 3 smoothed but wiggly lines where parts of a few lines vanish when I open the pdf file in illustrator. Opening the same pdf in any pdf viewers turns out perfectly however. I need to further edit the pdf file for publication purposes, so having parts of the plot missing makes this a headache. I've done other plots before with R, which can be edited in illustrator perfectly.

I have several documents with what I call "reference layers" in them that I turn off when making a PDF. When I view the PDF on a Windows based machine, it is fine in both FireFox and IE. When viewing the PDF on a Mac product (iPad, iPhone, Mac desktop), the layers I have turned off are showing up in the PDF.

But i need only the width of the selection (without Clipping mask). I got these properties in scripting but including the clipping mask. The GUI itself shows different (i.e. Info -->: X:0 mm, Y:0 mm, W:full width [including clipping mask]. Transform palette -->: X:43.00, Y:22.0, W:64 [excluding clipping mask])
How to get the properties without clipping mask?
When I select an element, in this case a building, to make changes, the entire file is selected instead of the building. There is nothing to ungroup when this happens.
