Lightroom :: How To Copy Image Metadata Without Duplicating Images
Sep 16, 2012Environment: Lightroom 4.1, Windows 7, JPG and RAW images
We often work remotely on a laptop, then come back to the studio and transfer images from a shoot to the main PC for further work. Some adjustments in Lightroom were done to some images in the folder already, as well as rating some of the best images.
It seems the recommended way of copying images from a laptop to the main PC is to use the "Export as Catalog" function with the "Export negative files" option turned on. However, when working with hundreds of files, this process takes a very long time, and also duplicates the images on the same laptop in the export location. This doesn't work well when working with 50GB of files, especially when only a few of them have any Lightroom adjustments anyways.
Is there a way to just copy the entire directory structure over to the main PC (copying files is fairly quick over Gigabit Ethernet), and then export only the metadata for the files (or catalog) over to the main PC so I can keep the adjustments?
In other words, instead of having to do this:
1. Export as Catalog
2. Wait a very long time for the laptop to duplicate all the images and export files
3. Re-import this catalog to my Main catalog
4. Wait a very long time for this to happen
It would be WAY faster to just do this:
1. Copy entire folder structure from laptop to main PC (this is quick)
2. Export metadata from these files only
3. Import metadata to new PC

Mar 11, 2013I found an old thread from 2011 about the same problem and the mod reported it to the devs, but as far as I know no solution has ever been offered.(maybe in cs6? we are still using cs5)For one or two layers it's no problem to do it manually, but with say 40 layers with corresponding linked layers we need a better solution.

Nov 4, 2011I am having several problems with my xrefs. My two big problems are xrefs bringing in way more information than I want, and they are duplicating if they are selected, even when I have the xref layers locked.
My set up is this:
I have a plan file, a grid line file, an elevation file, and a section file.
I want all files to be referenced to each other. However, I do not want duplicates of any xref. For instance, in my section drawing, I will reference my plan file which consequently brings in any file that is referenced in the plan file. I know that I will get the circular reference warning and that I can click continue. However, is there any way I can just get "1 degree of nesting"?
Second, I cannot figure out how to lock my xrefs to prevent them from constantly being selected. My problem is that in my live drawing information, if I select everything within my window and an xref is in that window, it will be copied. I don't ever want to duplicate my xrefs, but I can't find a way to lock them (even when locking xref layers).

Mar 26, 2012I've never had this problem before today but I went to duplicate a layer into another photoshop file I have open, and where you select which .psd you'd like it to duplicate into, the open intended target file was not listed. I could either duplicate it in the same .psd, or I could duplicate it into a new file. I've tried restarting, I've checked for updates...

Aug 11, 2013Randomly on both of my computers. It happens on different versions of Photoshop, on WIN XP and WIN 7, so it's quite random. It happens everytime I want to duplicate layers, only when I duplicate them (or group) to new document. What to do about it?

Apr 4, 2013I have about 25 layers and within my layers are sublayers and groups etc . I wanted to paste them to a new document but when I do this everything is pasted all on separate layers. Is there a way so it pastes as is with the current layer configuration?? I dont want to have to regroup and organise everything all over again.

Sep 30, 2013How do I copy PARTS of layers containing many objects from one CS5 AI (v.15.0.2) doc into a new CS5 AI doc and keep/create the same layer names?
To start with, I have one fairly complex AI document with 100 layers, with several hundred items in each layer. For example, one layer named "Stars" contains 400 separate stars (not grouped), another layer named "Crosses" contains 300 separate crosses, and a 3rd layer named "Text" contains 200 separate words (not outlined).
If I select, by marqueeing a section of the image/artboard, some (but not all) of the individual items contained in the several layers, then paste that selection into a new CS5 AI doc, I cannot get them to create new layers of the same name. Instead they go into one general layer (e.g. "Layer 101") as a jumble of discrete, but unorganized objects (no layers or sublayers). In other words, I have lost the 3 main layers from which I selected a bunch of objects.
Checking "Paste Remembers Layers" has no effect on this result. In fact "Paste Remembers Layers" does not remember layers at all. Only if I select ALL the items in the several layers will it paste those layers by those names into the new doc (or create new layers of the same names).
Of course it is a COLOSSAL waste of time copying the ENTIRE document, then pasting the WHOLE thing into the new doc (with layers retained), then deleting the parts I DON'T need.
Illustrator :: Why Won't CS5 Allow To Copy And Paste Layers When They Aren't Locked
Jan 10, 2013I am working on a project and when I try to copy and paste unlocked layers to paste them in to another image it doesn't paste. The only thing it pastes is the text unformatted. I tried resetting the settings by removing the setting file to see if I can set Illustrator back to square one and it isn't working. See Picture for before (copy) and After (paste)

I am also using windows 8 on a pc. I would say it was the OS but it was working fine untill yesterday.

I know this can be done with an action (I did that allready) but the reason I want to script this is because I have to combine this with another script which takes care of colorizing stuff.

May 30, 2013I cannot remember what this is called, or where to find it in the menus. It doesn't have the word "duplicate" in it, but it should! You select an object and then go to a dialog box and set up how many times you want to duplicate it vertically or horizontally, and how far apart.
I will certainly write this command down when the answer comes through, but I can tell you it needs a name that sounds like what it is!

I'm using Illustrator CS6. I created a blank document and drew a circle with a 1pt black stroke and no fill. Selecting that circle, I my script to copy and paste it in front and increase its radius by one centimeter. I attempted a simple duplication first:

Jan 4, 2005i made a photo collage in 20"by30", i want to copy it to a 25"by35" "new blank image" the problem is that when i copy the collage it only copies on layer, i have around 50 layers in that collage. I tryed to flaten the collage so it turns into one layer, but then i am stuck with just one big layer in the 25"by35". i want to add new pictures in the collage but its hard to blend them together when i have just one big layer.
Is there any way i can copy all the layers without having to flatten them first so i can keep they layers intact in the bigger image?

Sep 24, 2011I've got a large project with an object that's dependent on a multitude of layers (over 17).
I don't want to flatten them because it's a large no no, and with they way the whole image is setup, idk if it's possible.
I want to just copy all the layers into a new .pdn file and save it separately so I can experiment with flattening without wrecking the big picture, as well as just having it for versatility for use in future projects.
So is there any way to copy an entire layer over? I don't mean magic wand it over to a new project (I just tried that.). I need all the settings with the layer, the opacity, filter settings, Title etc etc.
Pasting it over won't work since a lot of layers have filter settings like Overlay and the such.
I tried manually reapplying the settings, but there's so many different layers it's virtually impossible to figure which one needs which settings. It would be easier if AT LEAST the layer titles were transferred over, that way I could at least figure out which layers I'm looking at between the two projects, but I haven't figure a way to do it yet.
So is there any way to do this? Or any alternative?
And if not can it be added to a 4.X version? I think this would be a killer feature. I can think of a few other occasions

Nov 24, 2012I have pdn file that has multiple layers so when I go to the one I want to copy to another canvas entirely, I used the lasso selection tool and copy.
Well, it did but what it copied was a blank lasso with the nubs around it. I think (I was just trying any and everything to get it to copy the image not a blank.) I think! I made a duplicate layer and then it showed up.
Is that the way to transfer one layer's image into another canvas? Or is there a surer and easier way.
AutoCAD 2013 :: Dim Suffix Repeating Twice
Nov 6, 2013This happened in the middle of dimensioning A drawing. Was adding tolerance and some text to some dimensions which usually looks like this.
1.500±.001" Turn Runner
But all of a sudden it started to look like this.
1.500" Turn Runner±.001" Turn Runner
Everything in the dim suffix field is repeated twice and I don't know why.
No variables were changed...I literally did one dimension that came out normally and the next one did this.
Now all dimensions do this. There is a single dimstyle with no daughter styles.

Jun 4, 2009way to take multiple layers that I have linked together, then select an area on the image, and copy the linked layers that are within this area so that I can paste them somewhere else in the image and each layer will remain intact, so that after copying this selection of layers I can still turn them on and off along with the original layers they were on. basically want to copy a selection of multiple layers while allowing them to stay linked together. I can copy a selection of multiple layers, but they merge together instead of staying on separate layers.
