Illustrator :: Best Workflow For Creating Icons?

View 2 RepliesWe're looking into the "Workflow" system in Map3d.One of our most common tasks is to Set the coordinate system and then add a georeferenced image (such as a SID file).
I'd like to create a workflow that will do this -- but I'm having trouble figuring out how to get it to set the coordinate system. I will eventually need to tell the image what coordinate system to use (we normally have to edit that manually).
As we don't have the warper module. Is there a workflow for creating a morph between two clips?

I want to make a set of icons for my website, but I'm not too sure how to go about it, using photoshop. I want to make icons that are full 16-24bit colour - like Mac icons (not same style, but those kind of nice icons).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been creating icons for a 3D program for nearly two years now and used to send the icons in PSD format to developers. Just recently I have been sending the icons as BMP at their request but the icons now seem to have the halo effect creepin into them. They want BMP files and they use the upper left pixel of the icon to determine the transparency in the icon as they need a gradient background, and active state and the icons are desaturated when not used.
Anyway, here is the procedure I am trying to solve this but something is going wrong.
1. I use a 3D program to make 3D objects then render the image with a white background at 300x300 as a JPEG. No Antialiasing.
2. I open a new image in CS2, drag the rendered image into it then use the magic wand with antialiasing turned off and tolerance of 30-40 to remove the white background.
3. Then I use Layers>matting.Defringe to remove any artefacts. At this point the icon looks fine.
4. I resize the image to 26x26 and choose Bicubic interpolation. Finally I drag it into a PSD document as a layer.
5. To get the image into a usable format I have a background layer of pink (RGB: 255,0,255) so that it can define the transparency then I save it as a 24bit BMP.
Problem is, when the developer puts it into the program it has a noticable pink halo around it. I cannot do any more to remove antialiasing which he tells me is the problem.
Changing file format is not an option...has to be BMP.
I am trying to create a Microsoft Word toolbar icon at around 32x32.
Â
I have a vector image in illustrator and need to export it as a .bmp file.
Â
The problem is I am losing the resolution and the end result looks like crap.Â
Â
The existing icons in word are nice and smooth and seem to look fine.

i have been trying to create mac desktop icons using the "Photoshop PICT Resource File" and it works all right, but i lose any transparency one the image is saved.
I have tried using various icon programs (IconBuilder, etc) but they never seem to work for me.
Since i am on a Mac, standerd icon programs just dont cut it, because im looking to create high-quality icons like those found on Pixel Girl (a great resource for both Mac + Windows Icons).
I am far from a beginner, but i can't seem to find any tutuorials that apply to this topic.
I have a bunch of icons made for PC's that I'd like to use on the Mac. When I download the icons and unzip the file most come with two icons. An ico and a png image. Originally I could not get either to open in Photoshop so I got this little freeware prgm. (Icon Grabber) that converts icons to tiff files. Now I can drag it into PS and work on it. When I open it it shows up as having a transparent background. All is well. I then save it as a png so it will work on the Mac. All is well again and I can use the icon BUT it's showing up on the Mac as having a white background even though in PS it showed up ?as a transparent background. I have tried saving it to SuperPNG which supports and saves transparencies.
View 9 Replies View RelatedEvery time I'm working in an Illustrator file with multiple layers and hundreds of objects on those layers that sometimes aren't grouped yet, I find it hard to select click on the objects in the layers panel on the right, selecting them via shift-click (you know, selecting all objects between the first and the last clicked object).
Â
Is there a way I can select layer objects with the shift-option and afterwards have all of the items selected on the artboard? See the images for illustration.
I need to export a vector image to a .png for use on Retina display devices. What is the workflow and settings for exporting that results in the best possible quality .png image?
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen creating a new layer using the icons in the adjustments palette and holding ALT in CS5 a dialog box would appear before creating the new layer. At this point you could rename the layer change the blending mode etc.
In CS6 I do not get the dialog box to appear the new layer is just created. I've tried to reset my preference twice and this has not work.
I haven't used any XARA product so I'm wondering if any of the XARA products are suitable for creating icons for Android or iPhone apps? I'm looking to create the fancy glossy icons that look 3D-like. Output would be PNG, JPG, and may need to import PSD (photoshop) file. The icons would have to be created in different resolutions/sizes.
Or should I stick to icon centric apps like IconWorkshop from Axialis?
I've installed my new windows CS6, all my .psd files have the 'generic icons' windows give to files they don't recognize. Everything else has normal icons (i.e. Illustrator files) but the Photoshop files are blank. This is true whether I'm on any type of viewer format, i.e. details, thumbnails.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a sheet of icons that I'd like to recolour and export individually. While I now know how to recolour the icons, I'm not sure how to individually export them into their own files. The sheet contains icons arranged in a 10x14 grid (10 icons by 14 icons). The only other choice I have aside from this is to trace out PNGs and recolour that way but I've already tried that and it never seems to maintain the original integrity of the image.
Â
My thoughts were that maybe there's a way to export a group as an image?
the symbols aren't for everyone. can i change the symbols to things i would recognize?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI seem to have lost my icons for Illustrator CS2 and InDesign CS2 files. The files show as a standard white "page" icon, instead of the program icon. Since I often have multiple Adobe file formats in one folder, it makes it difficult to distinguish which ones are Illustrator vs. InDesign. Oddly enough, Photoshop files and GoLive site files show their icons for files.
Â
I read elsewhere online that this could be caused by a cleaning utility program such as CCleaner when "{GUID} folders are deleted from C:WindowsInstaller." However, I can't find the answer as to how to FIX it.
Â
I have tried using Windows>Default Programs>Associate a file type or protocol with a program to check that Illustrator and InDesign are set as defaults to open the files. I found that the programs were set to shortcuts within the Adobe folder. I fixed that by deleting the shortcut and putting the actual program link as the source to open the program. (Actual program .exe file was located within Adobe Illustrator> Support Files>Contents>Windows.)
Â
Also, I have the Adobe CS2 Suite installed under Program Files (x86).
My right side tool bar: function icons keep disapearing. I cannot find a place to restore them.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to follow along with a video at Lynda.com on AI CS6.However, in the video, Deke McClelland is showing the TEXT "Align" on the top Control Panel. On my screen, it's not a text, but a small icon. When I click it, I don't get the same options he does.
Â
I've searched and searched and can't find how to get MY screen to look like his. I have even tried to "Reset Essentials" (the workspace he's using) and still no luck.
I have CS6 and I can not see the names, eyeball icons, lock icons and arrow icons in the Layers Palette. I see that the layers are there and when I hover my mouse over the layers the names and icon show up but they disappear once I click off the layers palette.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Illustrator 5.0 with MAC OS 10.8.4 and the Illustrator file icons are different than the actual file image. It's using the same image for 5 different files. I tried resaving the files and copying the files, but it didn't work.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am designing slides in Photoshop using the DV video preset. Except I want to use these same files for print output as well. So here is my workflow: 1) Created video preset template but resized to 300 dpi2) Create slides3) Output slides to 72 dpi jpg4) Put into Premiere Elements5) Burn to DVD (except my app won't recognize my DVD burner now so I have to use Windows DVD maker but that is a different topic.) Then, I am using the same slides in a printed album:1) Switch the resolution on the 300 dpi to "square" pixels2) Save as jpg for my album template3) Put into a page frame I made out of an 8.5 x 11 doc (plus required bleed) So, my question is, do I need to switch to square pixels? I am not sure which way the picture was originally scanned, but I think switching to square pixels should be accurate...it is just that they are looking wide and I may just have gotten used to the other way. The rectangle pixel document actually fits onto the 8.5 x 11 album page better...but I want to do it the "right" way for print.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to understand the theory behind the workflow between 3dsmax and mudbox.I know that exist 2 workflows:
1- send your low poly obj model from 3dsmax to mudbox, then subdiv the mesh in mudbox and generate the textures and normal map. Finally return to 3dsmax but ONLY use the maps to recreate a high detail model. This is useful when you make video games character or when you animate the model
2- send your low poly obj model from 3dsmax to mudbox, subdiv the mesh, sculpt paint, generate maps and return the HIGH resolution MESH to 3dsmax(return with textures). It works only if you generate still images, not animation.
what will be better than GIMP (Linux) for this type of workflow:fast processing of the tens of files, jpg to jpg: open, levels, sometimes color rorrection, scale, unsharp, export as jpg with web setting, not camera settings.
For now, GIMP is my main program because of familiar look and easyness of use, but it was designed for an opposite use, and is counter-productive for this kind of workflow.
Here is link to what use it was intended for vs similar to mine workflow: [URL] And similar to mine problem experienced by another user: [URL]
So far I went through:
ImageMagick
DigiCam
DarkRoom
Shotwell
GwenView
... still GIMP provides better results much faster.I was under impression that with wide use of the Web there bound to be some Linux software for a fast mass editing.
I shoot Nikon and use Capture NX2 as my RAW converter. I then save my conversion as a TIFF and move into Photoshop CS6 for all of my editing and processing.
Here is my question: I have an Epson 3880 printer and i really like it. Ive started making my own prints and ive found that the ability to tweak the images is really an advantage vs. having a lab print them for me. Ive read quite a bit and seem to get conflicting positions.
Its seems as if sRGB is best for internet whereas Adobe RGB (1998) is best for prints. However, im a bit confused by all of the articles ive read. If i want the best of both worlds would the following be a good workflow?
1. Shoot in RAW
2. Convert RAW image to a TIFF in Capture NX2 with the Adobe RGB (1998) color space (I use Capture NX2 as my RAW converter)
3. Move the file to Photoshop CS6 and fully edit
4. Print the image
5. Convert the image to the sRGB color space and save as a JPEG
6. Post to web (i.e. Flickr)
Does that sound like a good plan or would you recommend starting and ending in the sRGB color space. Ive heard that changing the color space in an image slightly denigrates it ?
