Illustrator :: Why Are Paths And Shapes Distorting When Make Them Smaller
Jul 12, 2013This is what happens when I resize from large to small (in this case 600px to 60px).

View 2 RepliesI'd like to be able to make Clipping Paths out of (unexpanded) Compound Shapes. We can't do that already.I'd also like the Expand button to work like it did in CS4 again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have this object (shape path) that is like a continous loop or ribbon. see below:
I would like to break it into two seperate shapes: a top half, and bottom half. I need to remove some between them though.
Unfortunately, I cannot make the scissor tool, knife tool or cut path tool work correctly. It just doesn't seem to work, no matter whether I have anchor points selected or not.
I have also tried duplicating the object and trying to delete anchor points until I'm left with one of the shapes. However, because of the ordering of anchor points, I end up with a blue line connecting one end of the object to the other.
I have two shapes overlapped (a circle and a star be to be exact). A triangular are of the star is overlapping the circle.
How can I merge the two shapes in order to delete specific paths? Thus creating a pie-like shape (circle, with the triangular section cut out of it).
I'm using the Pencil Tool to draw shapes (not good enough for the Pen Tool yet) and some of my paths are not as smooth as I'd like, so I go over them with the Smooth Tool, though it seems like it either smooths the path a little bit or completely changes its shape.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm making a swatchbook (Pantone ® style), with a large 100% swatch and three smaller ones (5%,25% and 50% ink.). Right now I've got a 7x7 grid with all the swatches as I want (see screenshot), however the other 26 other pages only have the 100% swatch. Is there an 'automated' way I can make the smaller swatches in the 3 different percentages?
View 3 Replies View Relatedget a solution on compressing the pdf file which is created by illustrator.
The case is, i got a pdf file and then i am using illustrator to edit it and then save as pdf.
After that, i found that the pdf file size is quiet large. Someone know how to make the file become smaller but not using those compress software such as winzip and etc.
I need to make some paths - straight lines, really - in an Illustrator file that will be "paper white" when printed. Working in CMYK mode. In other words, when printed, there will be no dots at all in those spaces. Can I do this by setting the fill to none and the stroke to white? Or do I need to do something else to signify "this space is empty"?
View 2 Replies View Related.... so as to be able to apply a fill over the whole object??
This might sound more obvious than it actually is in this case so i'll explain. My partners artwork contains a lot of linework and unfortunately, i can't get the degree of accuracy i need with a continous path. Therefore, the problem i have is joining lots of paths (some of which have endpoints joining midway through other paths) to make a single object with the strokes preserved, so i can apply a fill to the overall object or to individual sections.
I've tried unite, join and all the other commands that i'm aware of but all give undesired effects. I've tried using a compund path but all that does is make them act as one but still doesn't do what i need with regards to filling the object.
A simplified example of what i need to achieve is this...... create a square using 4 seperate paths and then a cross through the middle using more seperate paths to create a 4 box square. I need to be able to make this one object so i can fill each individual square a different colour if need be?
Can I bend these paths making a 90 degrees curve pointing right so that the green line forms the inner curve with a smaller radius than the red line?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make a repeat pattern tile (using CS5 on Windows 7), but when I crop the pattern, the expanded paths underneath become visible as on the flowers. This is what I did after creating the artwork:
Used the rectangle tool to make a box with fill/stroke directly on top of the artboard.. Select all > Expand (selecting stroke only, not fill) Deselect the cropping box and grouped the remaining objects. Reselected the cropping box and grouped all objects Pathfinder > Crop I'm guessing it may have something to do with the fact I used a gradient on the flowers but how to resolve it.
what are transformed paths and shapes
View 1 Replies View Related[CS6] I created shapes with the pen tool.
Then I selected the path selection tool and selected a path.
Clicked right mouse key, choosed "Fill Path..." or "Fill Subpath" (don't know what it means). After filling with a color I get an object in
the form of the path and I can move the path to another place.
But I can't move the object in the shape of the path. I can't move it with "Path selection tool" because it's no path. Then I tried the "Move Tool" but I also can't select the object with it instead the whole canvas is moving.
How can I select and move shapes which were created with the pen tool?
I want to join two paths to create a shape that I can fill but at the same time retain one of the original paths (the red one in the image below). I can copy the path I want to retain but surely there is a more elegant solution. See below for for an illustration:

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem when exportng a file as a pdf. A jpg image that I am using distorts. This is a high res file and I have tried exporting with both the 'high quality print' and 'press quality' presets.
I have tried printing directly from illustrator and the image looks great, when I print from the pdf the image looks disorted.
I have attached an image to show what I mean, the image on the left is from the pdf.
Any way I can distort a path in Illustrator like in PS. You know I must accept the changes I made. In Photoshop, I allowed to move this 4 points before I press the check button. But in Illy only 1 point can move and it will automatically accepted it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running illustrator CS5.5 on Windows 7.
I'm making variations of a logo and one of them is a single color reverse. The logo is basically the letters 'MCS' written on a block of color. When I try to use the Pathfinder's subtract feature to knock out the letters from the block I get some slight distortion on the letters.
I was running CS2 before and I did this many times but I never had any distortion.
Is there a setting I can change?
I made a long line with a complex stroke profile. I decided to remove a section, but it distorts the new ends with the excess profile. How can I delete a mid point on a line and keep the profile visually intact?

Also after I hve one picture open, if I open another the first disappears, why?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently working on making a map out of a satellite image. I am stuck trying to figure out how to get text to be small enough to be legible. I have cropped and resized the original image, It is 137x224 @ 72ppi. I want the text smaller, I think I cant get enough definition because the pixels are huge, text size 7 and under becomes like 6 squares per letter and there is no definition.
The same effect is keeping me from getting well defined and sharp lines. I try to stroke a path and the line looks like a row of squares instead of a line.
I'm trying to make this picture's file size smaller. It's the startup page for my website that I'm making. The file size is somewhere around 130 kb, and it takes a while for it to load up for a website. Yes I've used Imageready, and that doesn't help a whole lot. I just want it to load up quicker, without losing a lot of quality. The website is for the Air Force, I'm joining as a pilot and am making a site documenting my growing up in an air force family, and my going in the Air Force myself.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI would like to make the dimension text smaller so that the information doesn't become so crowded. I notice that the dimensions are written like 12' - 10 3/4", with a space between the ' and the - and a space between the - and the 10, rather than 12'-10 3/4", like an old-fashioned person like me would write. Is there a way to control that? I looked into the dimension edit dialog box & couldn't see a way. AutoCAD writes them like I like.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've downloaded a DEM and made a surface from it creating a HUGE file. I only need about an eighth of that area. How can I crop the surface to be a smaller area? I realize I can create a boundary, but I really don't need all the data outside the boundary.... I want a smaller file so it doesn't have to create one of those *.mms files.
Surely I don't have to export the boundaried area as triangles to a regular ACAD file, then make a surface from those triangles... do I? Not that it's that big of a hassle, but seems like a roundabout way of doing things.
How can one make a survey file smaller? The current file is 11 mb with survey figures and cogo points. It takes too long to load versus simple cad. How can I speed it up?
When I exported to autocad, first it crashed, then the annotation ability seemed to be missing and the points scaled/disappearred.
Or is this how it is...

I am making an image smaller (from 1200 pixels wide to 700), and no matter what I try it always turns out pixelated. I hate it! I just want the size of the image to get smaller without compromising the quality of said image. Here's what I've tried:
- Saving to different formats before resizing (TIF, PNG, etc)
- Changing the X and Y resolution from 150, to 300, even 900 before resizing. It seems to have no effect.
- Changing the interpolation from cubic to the others (the others ones all look worse)
I am at a loss! I am using "image/scale image" to resize, by the way. And the original image was a 1200-wide TIF. I don't see why I'm not able to increase the number of pixels while making the image smaller to maintain the integrity of the original image.
When using the oil brush, the color selector circle in the mixer palette is huge. Is there a way to make the selector circle smaller when using the oil brush The dropper at the center of the circle didn't show up in the screen grab.
