Illustrator :: Way To Convert A Path To Even Zigzag Segments
Feb 16, 2014
I have been researching this for years with no satisfactory result. Is there an easy way to convert a path to even zig zag segments... the purpose is to create an swen or stitched effect in screen printed designs. I see this all this time in retail stores and can do it in a very time consuming manor I'd like to start advoiding. I'm tired of the dashed line effect and want the stiched VVVVVV look around corners and such. The problem is the uniform effect you get because the segments are not equal.

This yellow donut is a compound path. I'd like to divide it into 10 segments, in the places where the black lines cross it.

I just received a pdf containing a drawing that has been exported by autocad. The drawing consinsts in hundreds of segments.
Is there a way to recreate the drawing (at least the perimetr/bounds) easily? In coreldraw I select all objects and click effect>boundaries ... a new fillable (closed path) object is created on top of the existing segments. The new object reflect perfectly teboundaries of the selected boundaries.
Is there a way to do this in Illustrator (cc)? (similar to coreldraw create boundaries).

I've tried every permutation of copy and paste; I renamed the path to path. It looks like a path when I add stroke, but it does not behave like one. I can't cut it or join it to any other path. It remembers it's text path status. I'm running OS X 10.7.5.

I accidentally converted a path to a text path. I searched the forum for how to convert it back to a regular path. The answer I found said to select the path and hit Command+C+F. This gives me another text path! I now have at least 6 copies of the path in my files but they are ALL text paths and none are visible with a stroke.

I applied a Distortion on a square shape (Effect / Distort & Transform / Roughen). Now, I would like to Edit the shape to refine it, but the selection show me a rectangle as original shape. Is there a way to convert the shape to an editable path?

I'm working on a project and I need to use the free distort tool + ctrl (command for mac users) but it won't work. I found out that I need to convert it to a smart object, from another disscussion, but right clicking the name of it in the layers menu isn't working. I'm using CS6 by the way.

I'm using CS4 on a mac.
Here's what I want: a filled rectangle in which the top and bottom line segments are straight, and the two side line segments are zigzag. I can't seem to find a good way to do that.
First thing I tried: Make a rectangle, then Effect > Distort & Transform > Zig Zag. That turns all segments of the rectangle zig zag, and I want the top and bottom to be straight.
Next: Draw four separate lines and join them to make a shape that I can fill. I can do that, right? Anyway, the problem: I draw a zigzag line, and a straight line and right angles. I select the endpoints with the pen tool (right?) to join them. When they join, either they both become straight or they both become zigzag. Which is not what I want either. Here's a picture of what I'm trying to do.
The other thing I noticed is that the Zig Zag effect doesn't give me additional anchor points (at least from what I can see), and doesn't give me anchor points where I want them. See in the above picture, where I have the left-hand line segment selected, the path is still straight so the anchor points don't line up with the zigzag line that is visible to me. Which means when I try to join the segments, they make funny shapes at the corner. Which is also annoying. This thread seemed to indicate that Zig Zag should give me additional anchor points at each corner: [URL]. Why don't I get that? Is it a CS4/CS5 issue?

I'm trying to make a curve that follows a path that changes direction. I've tried to carry the zigzag effect accross line using the compound path option, but the curve double in on themselves and don't make a continuous line.

I draw a set of straight parallel lines and then apply a smooth zigzag.
Here’s what happens:
Of course if I zigzag a single line and then multiply it everything is in order.
But why can’t Illie cope with multiple lines?

I would like to create a wavy line (the zigzag feature is not exactly what I need here) to outline a shape and then fill it with a solid color.
This is approx what I want; however the undulation needs to be more round and less peaked.

I'm trying about 8 hours to convert a Photoshop shape in to a working path in order to put a brush border around it. I don't understand why the "stroke path with brush" is grayed out and not usable directly on the shape path itself.
"Load path from selection" is not an option because it deforms my path.

How do I set two line segments apart (at suppose 12%) of it's length no matter how large or small i resize the two line segments, sort of like the settings in ChemBioDraw 13.0? In ChemBioDraw 13.0 you can look into the draw settings and it will say how far apart the two lines in the double bond is, line width etc.

I have been using adobe cs5 for a few years. If I wanted to connect the corners of two line segments, you would select the first line segment with the select tool, then switch to the direct selection tool, and drag the anchor point to the other line segment anchor point till the cursor arrow went white (signifying the other anchor point being recognized). Then you would choose "join" and it would give a nice right angle connecting the two line segments.
With adobe cs6, the direct selection tool doesn't change to white when you go over the other line segment anchor point.(Unfortunately my screen capture doesn't show the black arrowhead that you see when you are dragging with the direct selection tool to the other line segment.)
I have also attached a YouTube video link that shows what how this recognition of anchor points looks in adobe illustrator cs5, and this was exactly what I used to do when I was performing the task shown in my screen capture but with adobe.

I would like to draw a Zig Zag Line, but I want that the line start in point "A" and finish in point "B".
The image below is similar to how I want the line, but I would like to have that "wavy" style. I use Illustrator CS6.

I am drawing a simple diamond shape made with one rectanlge shape and multiple line segments. As I drew the design, I made sure to connect all the segments at the anchors. When I select all of the segments and try to join the paths, the end points or corners are not smooth. In other words, some of the line segment ends hang over the edges...
The image below shows the left side of the diamond, where the top portion meets the bottom...

What I'm doing is applying a brush to a line-segment and then dividing the line segment up into pieces of varying lengths using anchor points.
What happens that the long line segments show the brush perfectly, but the shorter line segments are "squashing" the entire brush into one short segment
So for example I'm trying to create a logo with hand-drawn lines - the longer pieces of the logo look perfect with my brush, but the shorter pieces are squiggly because the whole brush is being squashed down into the length of the small line segment.
I've already tried the brush options and I've tried options of selected object. Setting proportion doesn't work, because then the smaller line segments end up thinner than the rest and if I set the thickness back up then I get the same effect back.
Is there some way that I can set the full length of the line with the brush, so that Illustrator doesn't re-apply the same brush effect every time I segment the line? i.e. cut the line up without reapplying the brush to each segment.

I have some negative space I created(black area, see first image) that I want to fill with type, not just a simple fill.
Basically I want to create the negative space from a bunch of small minus signs(-) that need to line up as they go across. If I type on each path one at a time as the text doesn't line up that way. This needs to be one continuous path. (see second image)
Unfortunately if I add them together, it creates a compound path, which you cannot type on, unless I am mistaken? So I need them to be a path, not a compound object.

In illustrator, is there a way to reduce anchors points in a segment path without altering the path?
Is there a better and more efficient way to reduce anchors points than using the pen-minus tool?

I've got two paths. They don't intersect, exactly, a straight path ends at a curved path, but I need the end of the straight path to be curved, to make it look like the two meet perfectly. The two gray paths (a single path, then path->offset for the second) are the outside of a shield shape. The two black lines (paths) just surround text, but currently they overlap the gray paths.

I have noticed a few subtle UI changes in PShop CC -some of which seem like bugs. When I apply "transform" to a newly created Elipse path (which has been pre-specified as a path), I get this prompt:
"This operation will turn a live shape into a regular path. Continue?"
But the elipse I have created is NOT a shape. The Path option has already been selected. Yes, this is a very minor quibble, but as a former beta (and alpha) tester, I tend to be compulsively thorough! OTOH, perhaps there is a user error on my part. I did double check that new paths created with elipse tool are spec'd as "paths".
