Illustrator :: Unwanted Transparent Shapes After Expanding Trace Using Pathfinder
Jan 29, 2014
In illustrator, I have placed an image that I created in photoshop. Once I trace and expand it, with the option to ignore white selected, there are still transparent shapes that I have to manually delete. For what I am doing now, it is way too tedious to have to do that. Why, if I'm 'ignoring white' so that I simply get a black/transparent vector image, are these transparent shapes showing up?

I have been using Illustrator for a couple of years now and from time to time I encounter very strange behavior when manipulating a vector shape.I have a current example here where I simply want to create a combined shape using the pathfinder tool:
As you can see, the generated shape (red) does not cover the original shape (green). When I use the path selection tool, I am able to reposition the first anchor but when I do the same for the lower anchor as well the entire shape is replaces a few pixel to the left. Even using the "align" tool afterwards is not useful. It seems impossible to make the red shape cover the green one.

With shapes that are intended to fit exactly with one another, such as shapes created with pathfinder>divide I find often that there are very small cracks between the shapes and that these will show up if the shapes are exported to Photoshop in a more pronounced way.
What's the workaround to 'seal' one shape to another and rid the result of these gaps?
Joining the shapes is not an option as they are different colours.

I have a logo file, saved as PNG, that is black on transparent. Very simple file, just stylized black lettering on a transparent background. In Illustrator CS5, I can place that file, do a "Live Trace" in "Lettering" mode, and Illustrator will correctly ignore the transparent areas when I expand the trace. After expanding, I'm left with scalable paths and an easy way to change the fill color to have the logo work with my background.
Fast forward to Illustrator CS6. I try to do the same thing but a) there is no "lettering" preset for Image Trace and b) there is no setting I have yet found to cause Illustrator to ignore the transparent areas when I expand. If I then fill, everything inside the bounds of the placed image (the square containing the logo) is filled with that color. The only way I've found to get similar results is to go through the layers panel after the Expand and deselect each piece of the image that should not be filled. I have a hard time believing this is the desired approach.

What I'm trying to do is give the blue box a transparent stroke that will "cut through" the red boxes and show the background underneath, whatever that may be ...white, another color, or a photo.
I can easily achieve this when I give it a white stroke. It'll look like this:
When I change to a background color other than white or even a photo however, I end up with this problem:
How do I make it so that I have a transparent border (not white) around the blue box? Which effectively cuts a "transparent stroke" (space) between the parts where the blue and red boxes intersect?

how to use Live Trace in Illustrator but now instead of the Tracing Options window having a button that says "Trace" it's now showing a button that says "Set to Default." I'm sure something isn't selected right or something similar, but I can't figure it out. why "Trace" is no longer an option?

Image trace shifts artwork once the trace is finished. Have to nudge art back into place each time.

I'm loving CS6 Illustrator, except for one thing. Image Trace. Here, Adobe seem to have taken away the two most usefull settings from Live Trace, and replaced all the presets with ones that are pretty much unusable. I almost always used either 'Comic Art' or 'Lettering' to trace hand-drawn images, but they're both gone. None of the new settings are good enough, even if I make a custom one. The main issue is that the sliders in Image Trace are for completely different things to those in Live Trace, so it's difficult to translate one set of settings into the other.
With Image Trace, I cannot get the same results as with Live Trace, and so far, have found myself having to have Illustrator CS5 open at the same time as CS6, just so I can get workable traces.
I don't know if it's possible, but is there any way to import the presets from Live Trace, or even the full tool, into CS6, to replace the new Image Trace presets?how to make the equivelant of Comic Art in Image Trace's new settings? This is a close up of a file I was trying to trace, showing the major difference in quality between the two CS versions.
Left: CS5 - Comic Art setting.
Right: CS6 - This is a custom setting, but is the closest I have come to Comic Art thus far.
As you can see, the definition of Image Trace is far lower in quality than Live Trace, giving me one large connected blob of colour rather than the distictly separate lines produced in Live Trace.

I just started using CS6, jumping from CS3. A major tool I use is Live Trace, and I have custom settings for that. I cannot find a way to make Image Trace behave the way Live Trace did for black and white line drawings. The results I get in CS6 are far inferior to those I got in CS3 in terms of retaining the look of the original raster image. Otherwise, I will have to leave CS3 installed just to do my Live Trace.
Here is a sample of what I mean. You can see the quality degredation in CS6 compared to CS3. (And it's much more obvious when it's full size and full resolution.)
My settings used in Live Trace (CS3) were:
The settings I tried in CS6 that gave the above result were:

I have created an arc using the Brush tool and now need to clip one end of it. If you refer to the attached image you will see that 1 is the arc created as a brush and 2 is what I wish to achieve by making the right hand end 'horizontal'. If I place a rectangle in front as shown in 3 and try to use a tool such as Pathfinder, I get a strange result as shown in 4. Because it is a brush there are no handles to allow me to reshape the end of the arc. Is there a way to achieve this. I need the final image to remain a vector as it will need to be resized. I am using Illustrator CS6.

I managed to get my logo to white and looking nicely but when I try to create a border around it it doesn't look sharp. I am selecting the text, growing by 1 or 2 pixels around and filling a second layer with black and exporting as PNG (to maintain tranparency). You can see what the finished product looks like at [URL]..... in the slider on the main page. It does not look sharp at all. how to do this in a cleaner looking manner?

For combining shapes, isn't the Shape Builder tool essentially the same thing as using Unite in the Pathfinder? Is there some other advantage to using it?

I drew a line using the line tool and then used the smooth zig zag to create a wave. The wave starts with the "low wave" and I want it to start with the "high Wave" so I tried the mirror option but that does not seem to make any difference.
I then made my "wave" longer and treid to use the pathfinder tool to "cut" the part of the wave I wanted but that did not work either. Is the line tool and zig zag the wrong tool to use?

I outlined a bit of text, and then applied Effect > Warp > Arch. What I'd like to do is cut apart parts of the now outlined letters. I tried to use the pathfinder palette, but it applies the pathfinder to old, non-arched shape.

I'm running illustrator CS5.5 on Windows 7.
I'm making variations of a logo and one of them is a single color reverse. The logo is basically the letters 'MCS' written on a block of color. When I try to use the Pathfinder's subtract feature to knock out the letters from the block I get some slight distortion on the letters.
I was running CS2 before and I did this many times but I never had any distortion.
Is there a setting I can change?

So I keep seeing this method of design on sites like dribbble or behance but I don't know how to do it!
Here's an example: Basically a bunch of circles are used to create this awesome shape and design. I have a general idea on how to use the pathfinder tool and I have used it a lot in the past, but how do you snap circles together with smart guides? It seems that the smart guides only snap based on 90 or 45 angles and don't snap edges of objects together unless there are two anchors.
Here's an example: I want to use the curves from 2 circle shapes to make a complex path. But I can't get the two paths to snap together
Ultimately to create something like the raindrop image above. I want to use the perfect curves on circles to create more complex shapes but since the paths do not snap together, I'm just eyeballing it to be close enough to do something with the pathfinder tool.

So occasionally, when working on customers files, outlined text becomes warped when resizing or using Pathfinder. For instance, I have "III" written and outlined, but for some reason if I resize this, the middle line become thicker than the other lines. Other text changes as well making it very hard to make the necessary changes to my artwork without ruining the text.

I made a design that consists of multiple shapes; the entire thing has been expanded and grouped. I image traced and expanded a grunge texture that I would like to "cut out" of my design. I placed the texture over the design, selected both Groups (texture and design), and tried Minus Front and Minus Back (among a few others just to test) and the two both leave nothing but a couple speckles from the texture.

I want to import a photo, trace geometric shapes over the photo like circles and lines, and then remove the photo. I have a very basic understanding of LAYERS. I have viewed a few tutorials. But I don't know how to import a photo or how to get rid of it once I have drawn the geometric shapes over it.

I made a circle. Moved it up about 300px then used the rotation tool to > move the center point to intersect with the art board's center point > alt clicked and set a 45* rotation. Then duplicated around.
I moved to AE and created a simple rotation animation. However, I need to exspand the the radius of those objects or create more space between them.
Is this possible without rebuilding it from scratch in Ai CS5? Is there a way of exspanding the radius in Ai?

I wonder of there is a way to expand objects with a filling, without creating the outside lines of the swatches you made to create an filling.
I add a printscreen... The first F is the filling, the second is an outline view of the expanded filling and the last one i wanna create. The way i create is, deleting the squares and use pathfinder but it take a lot time to do.

I'm currently having troubles from having too many anchor points after "image trace" or "offset path tool".
1. I would like to know if there's a way of deleting useless points AT ONCE. (ex. multiple anchor points on a stait line, or duplicated points at one anchor point)
- I've tried "Simplify" but it changed the picture too much.
- I've tried "Remove redundant points" when using "image trace" but it came out as below:
2. Sometimes pathfinder seems to make duplicated paths. Is there any way of knowing that there are duplicated paths OR eraseing duplicated paths at ONCE?

In CS5 there was an option to use the Live Paint Bucket on a newly traced image and there were also gap options to close gaps when doing this. I do not see these options in CS6. Where are they?

On illustrator cs6, I have a complex shaped with a gradient fill. when I go to expand there is an option that says Expand Gradient and you select the amount of objects. so I selected 6 objects, and the expand tool did what I expected, my object got divided into 6 objects with fill colors relative to the gradient.
so I hit undo, and I moved a stop on my gradient slightly to affect the results a bit, and now it wont expand the same way. my gradient stays a gradient. I tried drawing new shapes with gradients and the gradient wont expand.
