Illustrator :: Placed Bitmaps From Photoshop Have Different Colour Breakdown?
Jul 5, 2013
When I place a bitmap in illustrator from Photoshop the colour breakdown changes. In photoshop, it could be set up using a 100% Solid black using CMY 0% and K100% but when I place this in illustrator the breakdown changes to say C:78.89%, M:80.45%, Y:88.90% K:90.45%.

Is there a way that for a spot color I can also define breakdown levels? If I have the Lab values for 100%, 75%,50%,25% and I want Ilustrator to use this breakdown colors for interpolation.
Â
Its like perdefine what a 50% tint of a spot color looks like.

if there is a plug in that will allow me to save 256 Colour bitmaps? The reason I ask is because I am trying to make map tilesets for a particular game that I like to play and they have to be 256 colour bitmaps. I know I could use GIMP, but I don't find it very user-friendly.

I came across this one tutorial that I'm liking, but in many parts he doesn't explain enough. He just kind of says "Click this, press that. Toward the beginning of the video when he is playing with the rust picture to get just the rust to show, break that down for me so that I can understand the actual princibles behind that so I can apply it elsewhere.[URL]...

Is there a plugin that can take an image and kind of break it down if you will? Like when you see a "Dirty" font, it's like a regular font that has cracks and holes in it that gives it a broken down, grungy type of feel, is there a plugin or an effect for that, or even just a simple way of doing it?

How do I see the object selected change colour dynamically as I adjust the colour sliders?
Â
It seems the object only changes colour when I release the slider. But I want to see it dynamically change, so I can find the colour that works best without "hit or miss" - "trial and error" behaviour.
Â
Yes... I'm aware some of you spend hours in colour programs creating a palette to work with. Good for you.
Â
I'm just wanting to do it LIVE. Dynamically. In 2013. In Illustrator.

I am an Illustrator user but I am working with a company that uses CorelDraw. Recently I received several large files from them with bitmapped images within the CorelDraw files. I don't know how they are saving or exporting them, but when i receive them they look like standard Illustrator eps files. However, when I open them, the bitmapped files are embedded instead of linked, which is a no-no in Illustrator. These embedded files have a default resolution of 72 dpi no matter what the original resolution was. So, my question is, what is the standard way CorelDraw brings in bitmapped files and is there a way to export files so that bitmapped files retain their original resolution.

I would like to be able to select a colour like you can in photoshop. The swatches are very limited. I would like to select it from the colour 'wheel', where you can move up and down the slider to select the value and then move over the circle to select your colour? Or where can I find a huge swatch of colours?

Whenever I open a bitmap in Photoshop, the visual quality of the image is not as good is it is in ImageReady. The bitmap looks exactly right in everything but photoshop. Even ms-paint! The problem doesn't happen to Jpegs though. The effect is something like a stepping-down effect between shades(or colors?) and it ruins the entire image. (eg. a bitmap image of an apple looks like it has obvious lines of shading)

Whenever I create a new colour in the colour swatches it only stays there for a couple of actions while working on a project. I understand from others that once they create a colour it stays there. Why can't I get that to happen?

I am using CS6 and the Replace Colour Tool no longer allows me to replace multiple colours when I select the + . So when I have the panel open and I highlight the +, I used to then be able to click on several spots in my image and all of the colours that are in those spots are added to the selected colours that will be changed by using the sliders.
Â
But now, when I use the + it has exactly the same effect as not using it - I can only choose one colour or an other, I can't add.....I want to reset this to the original way that this works.
Â
Currently I have to open the panel, change one variation of a colour, save it, then re-open the panel and do it again (and again and again) until all the colour variations I am trying to remove are are changed. I know I also have the 'fuzziness' slider, but it does not give enough control.

I have a technical wireframe drawing that I need to use in an InDesign-built publication. The drawing is a bitmap and when I import it into ID it is light , a little muddy a nearly impossible to read when printed out. I've tried lots of different things to darken and increase the resolution with little or no effect. his includes: mode changes, changing the blending mode on a duplicate of the backgroud layer, increasing the resoltuion, etc. with no success.

I am designing a T Shirt for my ski club.I have taken an image from a banner (made in illustrator, full colour image attached) and I want to devide into a 3 colour image for the t shirt (I am only allowed 3 colours for printing). The colours I want to use are black, white and purple. The colour of the t shirt is a light blue.I want to then put the purple logo on top of the white and black too.So I'm after a black and white grunge background with a punchy purple logo on the top.All of this should be on a tranparent or, for design purposes, light bue (same as T Shirt colour) background.
Â
how to split a full colour image into using only 3 (4 including transparent/light blue background) exact colours.
Â
If I were going to black and white I might convert to grey scale and then paint areas to fully white or fully black using an overlay brush I don't think this works for me for more than just black and white though.
Â
I have attached two of my attempts where I used the colour range selection and level adjustments. Niether was really successful though (one does not use the right colours or number of colours but looks quite cool).

I will like to find out the colour code for the background colour on a particular web address. Unfortunately I am new here so not allowed to post links so will say this as creatively as possible. the address is theregentlagos (with the usual prefix beginning with w and suffix beginning with c for all websites). I am referring to the colour where the menu items like logo, home, brands etc are on.

I've been asked to convert an image to 2 colour for printing. I have the image as a full colour CMYK layout (with layers), but the whole thing needs to be converted to 2 colour. I have the pantone reference numbers for the 2 colours it is to be converted to. I am familiar with the hue/saturation tool, but this just seems to convert it to one colour, and you have no fine control over the exact colour you want.

For many years, I've been able to stretch bitmaps with a simple, repeating style (eg. a single block of colour, some lines etc, nothing complex) whenever needed, with no problem. This I do by first selecting the part of the simple bitmap I wish to stretch with the marquee, then using scale (apple + t) to stretch it either horizontally and vertically. End result, the bitmap is extended, looks solid, sharp, all is good.
Lately, and consistently, i've discovered a fresh hell in that this no longer works. When I repeat the process above, all looks good, marquee, stretch... then the second I commit the transform, part of the bitmap beginning where I stretched from gains a feathered/opacity effect. For years, solid, now it's gaining a feathered section highlighting where I made the transform.
Something must have changed (it's not the version of PS) in my settings, which i've hit or shortcut-ed by accident.
The only way I can "fix" the process is by ensuring I only marquee the last 1 pixel strip (either horizontally or vertically) and stretching just that. This works fine, like it used to, but is time consuming and driving me insane. I cannot fathom why it's creating this weird feathered effect when I'm stretching a solid bitmap, when I know it didn't used to.

I can not delete some of the swatches (PMS colours) from the dock. I've tried to search for any artwork that may contain the colour, but I could not find anything. When I open Swatch Options it only lets me change Color Mode. Swatch name and color type are greyed out no matter what color mode I choose. I've tried to copy and paste the artwork in a new document, restart Illustrator but the problem persist.
I work on Mac OS x 10.6.8..

I have tried unsuccessfully to export colour separations from Illustrator (CS5.1 MacOSX). I need the separations in an editable file format, but it seems like I am only able to print separations.
Â
I have tried to print to a file with Output set to host-based separations but even that seems to be impossible. I get an error message "The save as PDF options in the Printer dialog are not supported".
Â
The software is clever enough to do the separations, but somehow it can only print, not export them. Is there any additional software that would pose as a printer but instead of printing would create a file?

No matter how I set the interface preferences, when I make a new artboard, that artboard is white.
Â
The brain-dead workaround to this is to put a rectangle the colour I want on a locked background layer and make it the same size as my artboard, but this turns "Shift+O, drag" into "Shift+O, drag, M, drag, set desired fill colour, deselect rectangle, restore previous fill colour and tool and selection."
Â
It seems like there should be an interface option somewhere that lets me set the colour of new artboards, but the only guidance I can find on setting the artboard colour says to use "simulate coloured paper." Simulating coloured paper is not setting the colour of your artboard. It is simulating the way ink always lets some of the paper colour show through.
Â
I do not want my artboard to show through. I simply want it to be a different colour. When I press Shift+O and drag out a new artboard, I want that artboard to be the same colour. If I decide I would like a different colour, I want to change a single setting somewhere and have the colours of all artboards in the document change at once.
Â
I cannot find any setting for this in the interface. Am I missing something, or is it just not there?

I work on a Mac and I just updated from Illustrator CS5 to Illustrator CS6 and I'm noticing a weird problem. I have a file that I created in CS5 that when I copy the artwork to a new file in CS6, the colours are totally different.
Â
I have checked my preferences against those of a co-worker that still has CS5, and as far as I can tell, everything is the same!
Â
I've attached a set of screenshots (below), using a file created in CS5 (bottom image), and what it looks like when it is copied into a new file (top image).

I use Photoshop to convert images to halftone bitmaps for silk screening, and have come across a new problem. I have separated my three gray scale layers, and converted the first layer (a scanned B+W image) as I normally do, without any problems.
Â
That is: Image>Mode>Bitmap / Halftone, 600 dpi / 47 lpi, 45 degree angle.
Â
I then try to do the same thing with the other two layers (objects drawn with the pen tool in Photoshop in black with no background). But the halftone doesn't work. When I try, the watch appears while Photoshop works, then there are the bodies on a white background. The black drawings continue to be solid as before only with somewhat pixelated edges. I have scoured the internet and haven't been able to find a relevant thread.
