I work on a Mac and I just updated from Illustrator CS5 to Illustrator CS6 and I'm noticing a weird problem. I have a file that I created in CS5 that when I copy the artwork to a new file in CS6, the colours are totally different.
I have checked my preferences against those of a co-worker that still has CS5, and as far as I can tell, everything is the same!
I've attached a set of screenshots (below), using a file created in CS5 (bottom image), and what it looks like when it is copied into a new file (top image).
When I use the polyagonal lassoo (or whatever it's called), select copy, then paste the selected image onto a new blank file, the selection changes from colour to black and white-
I produce documents in AI, and save them to pdf. Then, in order to reduce the file size, I load then into PS, flatten image, then resave as pdf. All are in CMYK.
There appears to be a big difference in the output pdfs from AI and PS. In the PS ones, blacks are very grey, and drop shadow effects become exaggerated. I've attached some screen shots. I hope you can see the differences. The AI ones are on the left. It is quite hard to see the differences here, but across a whole document it is very obvious.
What can I do to stop the PS pdfs turning out this way?
Why is the pixel ratio of a project in illustrator different than that of the same pixel ratio of a project in Photoshop? Example: A project can in Illustrator can have an artboard of 950px X 950px and be 12in and in Photoshop that same pixel ratio will be 4 3/4in.
OK, I'm creating a tradeshow graphic for a client. I designed the whole thing in Illlustrator CS6. But for the proof, I used a low res image of the sky (before we purchased it). Everyone was happy. It was a low-res RGB image imported into Illustrator, then the whole thing was exported as a pdf.
Once they approved it, I purchased the high res image. RGB. Same image... just high res. I popped it into the Illustrator file and exported it in exactly the same way. But now, the image looks much more purple. The low res pdf showed it as much brighter, lighter blue.
My client prefers the lighter blue. When I look at the two images in Photoshop, they look the same (in terms of color). should I be worred? Why is there such a color difference?
How do I see the object selected change colour dynamically as I adjust the colour sliders?
It seems the object only changes colour when I release the slider. But I want to see it dynamically change, so I can find the colour that works best without "hit or miss" - "trial and error" behaviour.
Yes... I'm aware some of you spend hours in colour programs creating a palette to work with. Good for you.
I'm just wanting to do it LIVE. Dynamically. In 2013. In Illustrator.
copy specific fill colour so that it can be filled in as stroke colour in other compound path. I attached 2 screen shots as below. I want to copy the blue olour to replace he red stroke.colour.
I would like to be able to select a colour like you can in photoshop. The swatches are very limited. I would like to select it from the colour 'wheel', where you can move up and down the slider to select the value and then move over the circle to select your colour? Or where can I find a huge swatch of colours?
I copy an image from Illustrator, go to my photoshop file (a mockup template that I use several times a day) and "paste" is not available (grayed out) like there is nothing on my clipboard. Usually after I make 2-3 attempts at the whole process (back to AI, copy... to PS, paste...etc) I can finally get it to work, but there is an abnormally long lag time when moving from AI to PS (ai acts likes it's trying to save information before it allows the PS window to come to the front). I realize there are other ways to get AI info into PS, but this is the quickest and has always worked before. All I am doing is dropping artwork onto a mockup template, it seems wasteful to save an additional file (in order to use the "place" command in PS) just to allow that.
This problem started last week, and at about the same time saving from Illustrator in some instances has become really slow (3-4 times longer than normal)
using Cs6, locked down all the layers I didnt want to copy across, select all, copy .. new document select paste remembers layers, paste in front, all layers beautifully copied but I cant see any of them on the artboard, only in the layers panel. There is nothing on top of the layers.
Having a really annoying issue that I've noticed since the latest CC update. If I have, let's say, a square of 100 x 100 mm in Illustrator and I copy it and switch to Photoshop, create a new document using the clipboard as the preset, it gets the mm dimensions wrong. My understanding is this should be consistent and not effected by things like DPI/PPI and I've ever had the problem before. It's effecting everyone in our studio and we're all running the Mac version of CC.
I work as a production artist and go through tons of art sent in from clients each day. Is there any way to stop swatches from copying from one document to the other? They build up and cause the program to lag or crash.
i wanted to copy a few objects at once to photoshop and i was hoping it would bring them in as seperate smart objects.... instead it came in as one smart object. is there a way to bring in a few layers at once as smart objects? i know i can export as psd but it rasterizes
I've been having an issue with Adobe CC Fireworks. Every time I try to copy a vector shape or an image from illustrator and paste it to fireworks, I get this error: "Alert can't open the illustration". I am running OS 10.8.4 and I've tried installing it on a newly purchsed MacBookPro and on an iMac but I still get the same error.
I try to copy+paste a shape from Illustrator CS5 to Photoshop CS5 (Windows). My goal is to recieve a shape layer I can use in photoshop. But it just copies it as a VectorSmartObject and I can't convert it to a shape layer. I read, that "normaly" or at least in the Mac version a dialog box should appear, which let's you choose how you want to paste it in ( SmartObject/ShapeLayer/...). This doesn't happen. Is thia bug?
I have come across a rather disturbing bug in Illustrator when copying an object with a color fill from one document to another.
Both documents have the same color space. Lets look at this example to see the condition. Make two documents with the same color space.
Make an object and assign a color to it. Lets say Pantone 201C and set it to a CMYK build - not a true spot color. Now make another document with the exact same Pantone 201C color - but specify it as a true spot color. Now copy and paste from one document to the next. As you shall see, you will get a dialog box warning you to add or discard the color to the recieving document as expected. This is a good behavior that tells the user that you have the same color builds but assigned different values.
Now what happens if we assign one document a book color value of PMS 201C and the other document a "spot" color build of PMS 201C. So we now have two PMS colors in two documents with different values assigned to them. Drag and drop or copy and paste an object from one document to the next. You shall now see that the recieving document now has two objects with the same PMS name, but two different color builds (and visual color differences).
What should happen in this situation is the user be prompted with a dialog box to either merge the two similar PMS spot color builds or add - like what you see when copying an object with the same color buld name, but has a different value assigned between the two.
Some of our designers are just going ape over this condition and I hope this bug could be addressed in a .01 release.
What is the cause of text that I copy and paste not retaining the colors it had? I have many text blocks with large numbers and letters each having their own color and when I copy them in order to paste them elsewhere, the letters/numbers have different colors. For example all numbers that may have been pink are now black.
Copying an element which has a graphic style applied now breaks apart the style into individual elements if the style is applied to text, the text is outlined too. This never use to happen. Have tried changing the paste board setting but this changes nothing.
Jusy wanted to know how would I go about copying this image. I want everything the same besides the coloured shapes. I want to be able to edit the image. As when I try to trace over it with the pen tool I can never get it to look the same. What would be the easiest way? or would photoshop be better suited for copying the images without the blue and pink shapes?
I was designing a business card as usual and copying some vector images from Illustrator, but when I tried to enter some text it came up blank...the color shows a question mark (?) even after I attempt to change the color.
I've seen the question mark before but all I needed to do in the past was select that little button and change it.
I must have hit a hotkey or something because now when I drag select vector and text and copy paste inside the same document it only pastes unformated text back without any vector.
When I use create outlines on the text it copies fine but if Im just copying everythign together or only the text object I get unformated text back.
I'm using Illustrator CC although I haven't tried doing this in earlier versions. When I copy text that has a drop shadow made with "effect/stylize/drop shadow" the drop shadow is editable from the Appearance pallet only in the original document. In the pasted document the drop shadow is there but does not show up in the Appearance pallet so I can't edit it. It shows up on a different layer so I can delete it but then I have to create an editable shadow from scratch on the new document. When I copy objects that are not text with drop shadow, the editiability remains, but it doesn't seem to work with text unless I create outlines of the type and then I lose the editability of the text. Is there any way to copy drop shadows that are editable on text?
I have an issue with copying cells containing text from Microsoft Excel 2011 for Mac and pasting them into Illustrator CS5. I select the whole cell(s) from Excel, open a blank Ai document and, without anything selected so the format is preserved, I paste the cells.
The issue comes with the resulting copy of the cells in Ai. The type which was bold in Excel is bold in Ai... but not really. Ai pastes the bolded text as not bold, but then makes a copy of that same text, puts a stroke on it, then places that over the regular text, so it looks bold. But now I have two copies of the same word, one regular and one with a stroke on it right on top of one another.
This normally wouldn't be an issue but I have to edit this info in Ai later - and there's a second problem. When I paste the bold text from Excel in Ai, the resulting word is broken up into individual text blocks for each letter. Instead of preserving the whole word as one editable text block, I now have to click on each letter to change it.
There is a catch 22 to these problems: These cells that I am copying from include bolded and regular text, and the regular text pasted into Ai without any problems (even the text blocks are preserved). So it's the bold text that is causing the problems
I have a feeling this has to do with how the individual cells are formated in Excel, but I have to copy data from many different cells made by many different people, so I am at a loss of what to do.
I have include a screen shot of what's going on with cells after I paste them in Ai. I have moved the oulined "5" up so you can see the regular "5" below it.
The calibri font used for graphs in Excel are not recognized when the graphs are copied into Adobe Illustrator. Other than changing the font to arial or another font. I upgraded from CS4 to CS6 on my mac and I still get the same error, "An unknown shading type was encountered," and the letters in the chart get substituted with jumbled symbols. I've tried copy the chart directly from excel to illustrator as well as saving it as a pdf or postcript file and then opening in illustrator. But neither approach works.
A friend managed to open the chart in Illustrator (CS5 on a mac) which gave the prompt that it cannot read the font and that it will display it as outlines. This worked and the text was displayed properly. But for some reason I never received this promopt whether using illustrator from CS4 or CS6.
I can not delete some of the swatches (PMS colours) from the dock. I've tried to search for any artwork that may contain the colour, but I could not find anything. When I open Swatch Options it only lets me change Color Mode. Swatch name and color type are greyed out no matter what color mode I choose. I've tried to copy and paste the artwork in a new document, restart Illustrator but the problem persist.
I have tried unsuccessfully to export colour separations from Illustrator (CS5.1 MacOSX). I need the separations in an editable file format, but it seems like I am only able to print separations.
I have tried to print to a file with Output set to host-based separations but even that seems to be impossible. I get an error message "The save as PDF options in the Printer dialog are not supported".
The software is clever enough to do the separations, but somehow it can only print, not export them. Is there any additional software that would pose as a printer but instead of printing would create a file?
No matter how I set the interface preferences, when I make a new artboard, that artboard is white.
The brain-dead workaround to this is to put a rectangle the colour I want on a locked background layer and make it the same size as my artboard, but this turns "Shift+O, drag" into "Shift+O, drag, M, drag, set desired fill colour, deselect rectangle, restore previous fill colour and tool and selection."
It seems like there should be an interface option somewhere that lets me set the colour of new artboards, but the only guidance I can find on setting the artboard colour says to use "simulate coloured paper." Simulating coloured paper is not setting the colour of your artboard. It is simulating the way ink always lets some of the paper colour show through.
I do not want my artboard to show through. I simply want it to be a different colour. When I press Shift+O and drag out a new artboard, I want that artboard to be the same colour. If I decide I would like a different colour, I want to change a single setting somewhere and have the colours of all artboards in the document change at once.
I cannot find any setting for this in the interface. Am I missing something, or is it just not there?
