Illustrator :: Layer Set To Multiply Remains Opaque (CS6)?
Oct 16, 2012
I made a document with two layers, one with lineart, and another below it with some background elements I tried to put a new layer over the two of them by clicking the Create New Layer button, and after placing an object in the layer, tried to set the layer to Multiply by clicking the sleection circle, then "Multiply" in the Transparency drop-down menu. Nothing happened.
I then tried to set the transparency of the objects themselves to Multiply by selecting them and changing their transparency. Nothing happened.
I am able to copy the lineart and background layer and paste them into a new document, and have subsequently created layers appear properly when I set them to Multiply, but I have been trying to figure out what I apparently "broke" so that the layers would not display correctly.
When designing for the web, I often like to give text boxes a thin, 1-pixel stroke of a slightly darker color than the box itself. I've noticed that when using the Stroke layer style options, setting the position attribute to "Inside" and the blend mode to "Multiply" has the undesirable effect of multiplying the border color with the background, instead of multiplying the border color with the box color (see figure 1). This seems like a bug to me. The only way I have found to achieve the result I'm looking for is to create a duplicate shape above my box layer, set the fill to 0%, and then apply the stroke effect to that layer (see figure 2). Any way to accomplish this all in one layer? I know I could just set the blend mode to "Normal" and choose my darker color explicitly, but I want the layer style to be portable, so I can use it on boxes of any color and have the resulting stroke a darker shade of that color.I am currently using Photoshop CS4 on a Mac.
I'd like to add some color to the outlines in the attachment. Right now they have some white background to them so I've got the blend mode set to multiply which works great since they're greyscale. I've tried duplicating one of the channels and creating a selection and/or layer mask from it with not much luck. I tried setting a layer mask and then filling the whole layer with the color I want but it didn't show up at all. I also tried filling the selection with the color I want which worked ok except the layer still has a bunch of white and if I leave the blend mode at multiply the color doesn't show up well.
I'm creating a large poster. it consists of about 20 layers. Not doing anything fancy, just adding a new photo to each layer or some text. I want the bottom layer (background) to be 30% opaque. I know how to choose the layer and move the slider. My poster looks great as a .pdn file. However when I do a Save As .TIF, .PNG it reverts back to a solid photo of a soccer field instead of being more translucent.
Does this have something to do with blending mode?
I'm trying to merge select layers to send my file to a publisher, but the drawing layer which is set to multiply loses its transparency when I combine layers (the original white behind the image shows). If I flatten the entire file, it works, but I can't do that in this situation.
as an alternative to using the magic wand to remove a color to transparency (which leaves fine detail, say in a line drawing, in a very sorry state) i saw someone use the multiply function in layer options to remove all white from a greyscale image leaving black lines over transparency. neat,
I think that we can control tones under all the opaque areas of a layer with the contour editor for shaping layer effect ... and after that with the choke and size sliders, we can control the extend of its appearance. But, I think that, in fact, I could not soundly understand how it is functioning.
I have a very simple PSD, so i'll try to explain this super simply..
one transparent layer, with just a pair or eyebrows, with the only added blend effect as 'multiply'
one background with a face, no eyebrows.
the layer blends the eyebrows in to the background face perfectly.
i want to save the layer as a separate file keeping the tranparency and including the result of the multiply effect, without the background.
the reason why i want to do this may confuse things, but basically i want several different eyebrow colours to be interchangeable over this face in an application that doesn't recognise the blending link with the background, so i want to save it in PS !
i have an adobe illustrator document. the measurements are in CM. the picture is 2,5 cm and 4 in height. it prints out perfectly, but is there any way I can print like 20 of the same small pictures onto one piece of paper in Adobe Illustrator?
I have a question about expanding appearance and multiply. I work in print-on-demand, and one of the limitations is that we can not use multiply on artwork. In order to achieve a similar appearance, when I receive these kinds of files, I flatten transparency, and that will sear in the way the multiply effect is interacting with the other elements of the same art file. (in the example below there are no interacting elements) However, if it is intended to interact with the background, I have to fiddle with the cmyk values (adding k) and opacity level until it is as close as possible. It is time-consuming.
we use 'expand appearnce' instead, and I tried it once and it worked! It did all the legwork for me; it spit out a different cmyk value and opacity level that mimics the effect of multiply, so I don't have to calculate it manually. However, I can't get it to work again. Illustrator thinks it is already its simplest form of appearance and will not expand it further. I've tried adding another effect and expanding but it will only expand the effect and keep the multiply.
Maybe she and I were both tripping when we thought it worked once? how to expand the appearance of multiply? Here's a picture of the 3 methods I'm speaking to: on the left is multiply, the center is flattened transparency, and the right is achieving a similar effect of multiply with opacity & color build.
I did this for CS6 but am at a loss for how to do it in CC.
I'm on a Mac and want my workspace to have a solid background instead of being able to see through it onto my desktop; similar to what you would see when first openning Illustrator on a Windows PC. Doing this also adds the minimize, close, etc. buttons to the header.
In RGB documents, the 'Darken' transparency blend mode doesn't change colours, but only shows a colour if it is darker that the colour underneath it.
In CMYK documents, 'Darken' acts differently. It does the same thing as 'Multiply': it darkens the top colour based on the colour underneath. In CMYK mode, 'Darken' and 'Multiply' seem to do exactly the same thing.
How can I get an object in a CMYK document to do what 'Darken' does in an RGB document - only show if it has a darker value than the colour underneath?
(why does 'Darken' behave like 'Multiply' in CMYK mode? What's the point of having two different blend modes that do the same thing?)Here's Adobe's official description of Darken. This matches how it behaves in RGB, but not how it behaves in CMYK:
Selects the base or blend color—whichever is darker—as the resulting color. Areas lighter than the blend color are replaced. Areas darker than the blend color do not change.
I need to create pattern using a simple shape and a background colour – the catch is they both need to be exactly the same colour.
For example ideally I would like to lower the transparency of the shape to around 30% so it’s lighter. Then put down a completely opaque background colour and move the shape onto the background. Logically I understand that making the shape transparent means it won’t show up on a background that is opaque... The only other option I've found is adjusting the colour saturation however this seems to have the same affect as it being transparent. There must be an adjustment option that I don't know about?
Flipping the idea vice versa seems to be no problem, having a 30% transparency on the background colour and an opaque shape works well however this isn’t what I’m trying to do.
I know it’s possible as I’m trying to replicate a pattern background we already use. Unfortunately I only have the screen shot jpeg of the background that has been OK to use on small designs in the past. Now I’m attempting to re-create it properly as a vector so I can blow it up to 2metres x 1metre for an exhibition stand without worrying about pixelating.
I have a question relating to the Pantone standard color that I will obtain if I mix the following paints together:
1. 9.5 oz of Pantone Black C 2. 15.875 oz of Opaque White ( I know there is no pantone standard for white)
I will need to specify that derived Pantone Color for a gloss vinyl paint that we would use to silkscreen and pad print information on ABS or PC injection molded plastic parts.
I have a problem with the Illustrator file I was working on. I cannot open it, and the icon of the file is a bit opaque with a grey cross. If I try to move it, a message says that the file is unavailable. But still is not an empty file. This is the property window:
Also, I stopped working around 01.00, so I don't know why the last access is at 02.36.
"Non Autodesk DWG. This DWG file was saved by a software application that was not developed or licensed by Autodesk. Autodesk cannot guarantee the application compatibility or integrity of this file."
In opening some drawings made by a Non-AutoDesk program, I get the above message. There does not appear to be any problem with the drawings, I can work with them no problem with AutoCad, but the message seems to remain even after saving the drawing with AutoCad.
I know that setting DWGCHECK to 0 can suppress the message, but is there a way of getting rid of the message for good.
I am trying to recreate the remains of a viking house that was discovered during excavations in the center of Dublin. I want to recreate the conditions of the house from when it was found. A part of this would be to create the 'wattled walls.
How to create this wattling - should I be using the pipe or tube method? If so, is there a quick command for tubes/pipes that weave around each other? I have attached a pdf of the plan of one of these houses.
For six years I have been using a Nikon D 200, shooting in raw data this has always produced a 15.5 MB file which, after processing in Photoshop 3and 5 has saved as a 28.74MB TIFF file with an image size of 3872 x 2592. Since sometime between Jan. and late march 2013 the size of the TIFF file has changed to approximately 16.5MB with the RAW file size, image size and print quality, at A4 size, remaining unchanged. Reprocessing a save 15.5MB RAW file that previously converted to a 28.74 Tiff file now converts it to a 16.31MB Tiff.
I have a profile view of a street surface which transitions from a 2.75% grade to -0.52%. I would like to add a vertical curve so I can add a label at the high point of the street. However when I create my vertical curve, the original PVI is still there and the surface uses the PVI's elevation rather than the vertical curve's.
How can I get the PVI to either go away or have the surface read the vertical curve below the PVI?
I now have xscanimage running from a command line. I added a soft link from .gimp-2.6/plug-ins/ to /usr/bin/xcanimage and restarted gimp. In File/ Create the option for xscanimage remains greyed out. What must I do to make it active?
I recently purchased VSP4 and when capturing from Panasonic camera via fire wire, the preview window remains blank but capture is successful. I can preview video on LCD screen of camera but that is all. All the settings seem to be ok. (PAL). However, the options panel is greyed out except for insert to timeline option. Also, the video properties in the options panel are all greyed out. I have a previous version VS3 on another computer which shows the preview window OK on capture. Could this be the integrated video card in my new computer or is there something else going on here?

I have 3ds max 2014 design and had recently being trying out Vray.
I then uninstalled. Which went with no problems. However when I now right click mouse in viewport I see vray properties greyed out and it says missing beside them. These were the macro scripts that were removed.
How do I remove this greyed out text and any other remains left over from Vray uninstall?
In expert mode under the Layaout Tab at the bottom of the screen I can see seven options for layoutas of up to four pictures - all work except the "all floating" option which remins greyed out - what do I do to bring it into use - it is probably the most useful option !
Now I have a question about Inventor. I try to write a program which opens a model, changes some dimensions and, then opens its drawing, updates it with changes made to model and after that converts it to DWG or DXF.
With SilentOperation set to false everythings works fine. I open a model, change it and every change is reflected in drawing automatically. The problem is in dialog boxes which appear after I try to open a drawing which references a model. Inventor offers to find a component to resolve reference as I think.
Okay, I used SilentOperation set to true to avoid this problem and after that no dialogs are shown. But when I change something in model it is absolutely impossible to force Inventor to reflect changes in drawing. I think that if open performs while SilentOperation is set to true it simply makes the drawing unconnected from model and there is no way to do it other than to supply the drawing with reference. But I don't know how to do that, because I have compared all fields of drawing which works to the one which doesn't and I've found no differences. I think that the only way to do this is only via dialog.
I'm following the steps in the following link from Adobe:

The final step, after selecting the folder I want to add, is to select Import. Except, the Import button remains grayed out. I'm not sure what to do in order to select Import and add the folder I already have.
