Illustrator :: Imprinting A Shape With Words?
May 28, 2012I want to 'imprint' a shape with text. The result being that the words in that shape will show whatever background color the shape is placed upon.

View 17 RepliesI used some white rectangles to change the shape of black letters on a white background. Now I want this combination of letters & rectangles to be just letters when I select them etc. (make the white rectangles blend with the background and still have the shape they left on the letters) How can I do that?

My requirement isn't much: To assign colors to individual words without having to separate those words into different layers.
Out of the blue, my type tool has been acting funny in Illustrator CS6. Generally my text boxes or bounding boxes are outlined in blue. However, now they are black. I'm not sure what instigated the change. Now I am typing in illustrator and it won't show any spaces between words. In the character pannel, the kerning is set to auto and tracking is set to 0. What are these black text boxes of death?

I would like to know how to avoid this. I use google translate first to translater the word, then copy and past the word into Illustrator. I then change the font to Devanagiri Sangam MN so the Hindi characters are displayed instead of the ascii code when pasted.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having in CS6..I have a text block with a couple of styles in it (headings have one look, body copy has another). Here and there, some words are on bold. When I select some bold words and change the color of them, some other bold words in some other paragraph also change color. Not all bold words... just some. The behavior is unpredictable, so the exact words that get changed will vary, but once it starts to happen it won't stop. When I try to manually fix the other words (hopefully I noticed them before my client!) and change them back to black, sometimes that change reverses the color on the original words too. Sometimes not; it's like the effect is sometimes two-way and sometimes one-way. It becomes a real logic puzzle sometimes, a maddening game where every change affects something else and you can't find the combination of actions that will do the simple thing you want.
I haven't noticed it happening with non-bold text, but that could just be coincidence.
When this happens, the only fix seems to be to rebuild the text from scratch in a new text box. (Copying it all and re-pasting it does not seem to work—unless possibly I paste into a different document entirely.)
I'm using CS3 on a Mac.
I outlined my text and subtracted it (and the tree image) from the black background. When I did this both appear thinner - particularly the tree.
If I then take the original version and the new subtracted version, and view them both overlayed one on top of the other in wire frame (outline) mode, there is no difference in the actual lines.
It seems to be a problem with the way illustrator previews the images. This wouldn't concern me, but when I export the file as a jpeg, the lines also appear thinner in the export.
I can create a manual solution by offsetting the path before subtracting, but this isn't ideal.
What does it mean when Illustrator v.15.1.0 ceases to contract a shape using offset paths and will only expand a shape? Seems like only yesterday I could render both ways. Wait a minute, it was only yesterday! Why would it suddenly stop funtioning?

How do I make the shape transparent so the shape may be filled with the background color?
I'm trying to repurpose some artwork and am running into an issue. In the image below, I simply want to delete the bottom right corner of the blue box so that the orange background is visible along the right edge of the curved shape and the blue box is visible along the left edge of the curved shape. But I cannot figure out how to do this. I've tried all the Pathfinder choices and none work. How can I do this? CS6, Windows 7.

Everytime I do this, it looks like I have it all lined up and when I make another point, the points move on its own to be off and not cover the object Say I complete the box and try to cover the object by just dragging and dropping, it will avoid that area and move it off to one side or the other but never align with the actual object I'm trying to cover for a smooth and even coverage. Trying to get the red box to cover the black serif and it won't do it.

I'm new to Adobe Illustrator (CS5) and, as the topic says, have an very basic question: how to hide a shape behind another shape? (say a star shape behind a rectangle)
I've looked up on tutorials and such and from what I've seen, the layers order containing each of the objects decides how the occlusion should occur, however I've tried doing that but with no luck, am I missing something here?
I am using Illustrator CS3 on a Mac 10.5.8.
I am trying to create a compound shape from a compound shape I have prepared.
The first part works okay. I can combine the hexagon-compound-shape I have created from multiple hexagon shapes.
I then want to cut away the edges on a part of the compound shape (using a box of 4 rectangles), which is supposed to give me a rectangle with only the lines from the compund-shape inside this rectangle (image 1).
But when I cut away the box around my hexagon-compound-shape (using the Pathfinder window), the hexagon-compound shape inside behaves strangely, with only some of the lines showing and other lines missing (image 2).
I would like the rectangles to simply just cut away the lines that the rectangles are covering, and leave behind the lines in my hexagon-compound-shape, as they appeared in image 1, and not having hexagon-compound-shape changing which lines appear and disappear.
I can't transform my shape in Illustartor CC. i.e - I have a rectangle which I can neither scale, nor rotate.

The problem is I'm not sure if there are any easy ways to get the word cut out of the image. I have been selecting each individual letter one at a time. I tried selecting the sign and do an invert but that doesn't seem to work very well, I think it's because its outdoors so there is alot of things going on.

View 1 Replies View Related I don't know the right keywords. If I make an art brush, say two solid rectangles when I apply this to a shape such as a square or star, there is a corner/point that doesn't seem connected, I get a gap/split. I'm guessing it is where the brush has started/ended along the path. These shapes are closed though right? Is there a way to avoid the gap/split? I noticed if I use the pen tool to give the point handles it'll seem connected, however now the shape is not a corner.
I know I can also use the appearance panel and set two strokes aligned along the outside, but this does not seem easy to update sizes, say I had 7 strokes for a rainbow for example each at 5 pt and wanted to update that to 7pt I would have to manually update each one? I also don't think I can use the appearance panel to set up a gradient stroke that flows along the path, such as a square with rounded corners applied, when I tried with the appearance panel it was as if it was masking a gradient beneath it.
I am using CS6, though I'm planning to switch to CC.
Editing someone else's file
They have a Square with an oval in the middle used as a clipping mask
When I click on the object, I can only modify the outside square, not the inside oval
What kind of a shape is this, and can I edit the oval? I don't use Illustrator much.
I have a stroke of a circle, and I want to clip a shape out of the edge:
When I use the parallelogram as the mask, I get this:
When in fact, I want the inversion of that:
I mimicked that by just making the parallelogram white, but how would I do that using clipping masks?
Alright I am trying to create a shape made up of tons of instances of a symbol (best example of what I am trying to achieve is here )
I hoped I could just use draw inside mode and the symbol sprayer however I am not able to ensure the instances don't colide and that they actually completely fit inside the shape without being cut off.
I am obviously going about this the wrong way but have searched for unsuccessfully for any instruction on how this could be achieved.

I have tried various tools (including Shear, Free Transform, white arrow and arrow +, ...) but I cannot get it to go into that particular shape, though some have moved it towards the shape, but not exactly.
I thought this would be easy, just using the white arrow and selecting one corner point at a time, moving it to the place I want it to be.
Here is the shape (the yellow part):
How can I get my picture into that shape and angle?
