Illustrator :: Giving Text Outline Stroke And Path And Uniting With Other Paths
Jan 13, 2014
How do I give Lucida handwriting a 2pt outline stroke, give it an outline path, then unite it with another shape path without the text losing it's outline stroke?? I can't bold Lucida handwriting as it only has an italic option, so need to give it an outline stroke to achieve a bold letter. As soon as I give it an outline path and unite it to other shape paths the 'bold'ness disappears and it reverts to it's original size.

I run a screen printing business and I recently added some simple design services to my clients to bring in more business.I have attached the graphic which is a mock up of what I'm trying to do with the text.
I'm looking to have the white knockout to the background color. it's a black text in the center, a (what should be) knockout outline of that black text and then another black outline outside of that.how to set it up, order and arrange the text so I can simply keep the look of the white knocking out to the shirt color.

I would like to find a way to outline text, but not that the outlined path will be a filled path, but only a stroked path. I hope the image bellow is more clear than my explanation

I need an outline on a stroke that i drew but when i apply object>path>outline stroke i keep getting my initial stroke applied as well. I only need the outline, not the initial stroke. I use Illustrator CC.

Is there a way or an option I am missing to convert my regular paths to a path stroked with a brush profile, while maintining the proper stroke width?
For instance, I have a regular line with a stroke of 5 and then add a brush profile, which then converts the original stroke to whatever the brush was made at.

I have some negative space I created(black area, see first image) that I want to fill with type, not just a simple fill.
Basically I want to create the negative space from a bunch of small minus signs(-) that need to line up as they go across. If I type on each path one at a time as the text doesn't line up that way. This needs to be one continuous path. (see second image)
Unfortunately if I add them together, it creates a compound path, which you cannot type on, unless I am mistaken? So I need them to be a path, not a compound object.

How do you make the stroke outline (The double white) on the red text?
I know how to make a single stroke outline, but not sure about the double. I kinda think the stroke outline might be off a selection that is put on a separate layer so it can be moved.

I am simply trying to outline some text. When I get to the "edit stroke" dialog box (where you specify number of pixels for width, etc.), it doesn't have an option for "line color". I thought it said it puts it in as the "last color used" or something like that. I keep setting the foreground color beforehand (to grey). It keeps putting the line in as red, when I want it grey. how you specify this color? Or if there is a simpler way to outline some text?

I'm making an extension panel, and I want to convert some fat roundendcapped lines to paths, but it seems there's no command for this in the SDK.
Object -> Path -> Outline stroke
I made an Action that calls Outline stroke from the menu, but then I got stuck again, because I can't find a way to call that action from my panel.I see Photoshop has an ActionList stuff. I'm looking for something like that in Illustrator.

I've used image trace to trace the outline of a street grid and expanded the trace into paths. However, after doing so, I realized I wanted the streets a bit thicker, so I increased the stroke value.
Is there a way to adjust the old paths to match the new outline? I tried saving it as a .jpg and retracing but the quality was subpar. Any way to "redo" the trace in the original file, or somehow tell Illustrator to move the paths to match the increased stroke? I need them to coincide once more with the edges of the streets. URL...

In the attached, I've placed red circles around areas where I would like to start paths that will be thicker when they start (so that they look like they connect in a seamless way from the decorative swashes around the pre-existing, diamond shape in the middle of the page) and then get thinner as they go on. How do I do that so it gets realistic?
Also, how do you vary it genereally? I may want to thicken the paths again when they end.
I know how to use the pen tool decently but at the starting points I can't seem to get things to look like they realistically join what's already there.

I want to change the color of a stroked shape but only partially (see attached image):
I tried using the Circle as Clipping Mask for the red Rectangle. When using a Clipping Mask, the red rectangle is clipped to the Fill of the Object, not the Stroke as in Step 3. Is there a way to keep the Stroke and not Expand the Stroke into its own Shape so that I can later change the Stroke from 10 points to 20 points, while retaining the partial red coloring?
I also tried making two Stroked Circles on separate layers and coloring/clipping the top one but having two Strokes stacked creates jagged edges instead of a smooth vector look. The top Stroke never perfectly covers the Strokes below, regardless of Color Mode. For example dublicating the green Stroked Circle and changing its Color to red should make it disappear on the red background, but parts of the green Circle still show through:

I want to make some text with two outline colours.
(I'm not too concerned at this stage with the squeezing effect on the text)
Adding a stroke layer style (then adding a second one) sort of works, but the corners are rounded - I want them (as in the Fforde book example) to follow the crisp corners of the font itself.

A screencast of my problem: [URL] .....
My illustrator has been really wonky lately; Mainly just not keeping lines where I put them. Is there an invisible pixel grid that I accidentally turned on at some point, and now everything is trying to snap to it?
I'm working at very large sizes, and I already tried reinstalling Illustrator. I can't seem to find anything on the Adobe forums, but I'll admit I'm bad at finding info I need online.

Returning to Illustrator after not using for a long time.
How can I permanently show paths created for example by the pen tool when I create them with no fill or stroke attributes - for example a set of contours?
If I set the view to outline (control + Y it does this but puts them on a white background meaning I can't see underlying layers.

In Illustrator I want to maintain the stroke settings while creating several paths with the pen tool. However, every time I start a new path, the stroke settings revert to what must be a default. E.g. I set 16pt + Variable width profile + Basic and stroke a path. When I start a new path, the settings revert to 1pt + Uniform + Basic, and I have to reset back to my original. Other art programs I've used maintain the tool settings most recently used until they are manually changed. How can I get the settings to stay through multiple uses of the pen tool?

I use the elliptical tool to well...make an elliptical figure, I have issues when I stroke it.

Is there anyway I can change this to a solid stroke?

I have been playing around a bit - and think the answer lives somewhere in compound paths, but can't quite get it right.
In the example below, I essentially want the anter to cut out it's outline shape into the axe. Same with the shield over everything.
This is essentially so I can place the logo over all sorts of backgrounds, without having to have a white outline on it.

I can't set the stroke of a path to anything less than 1 pt.
Though a dragged path (by an endpoint) snaps to a point on another path, when I lift my finger, the dragged point and path jump a small distance away.
Aligning two separate paths to their common (e.g. top left) endpoints also leaves the two endpoints slightly displaced from each other.

I auto traced a piece of artwork (a large bunch of leaves) & the strokes are made up of 2 paths.
Is there a quick way to reduce the paths to a single path
Or is it necessary to delete each leaf's secondary path manually
Is there something I should be doing differently when auto tracing.

I made a path and filled it with black. When I zoom in to make anchor adjustments, the fill and the path outline are offset making it very difficult to adjust and align filled paths. This happens all the time.

I mostly use photoshop for lineart on some pictures I do but the biggest problem is that the lines are not really smooth. I want to Use Illustrator just to ink the pen tool paths and then return it to photoshop to color. This is a recently finished picture I did using the Pen tool traced on top of a sketch I scanned. I want to know if there is any way I could do something similar to "Stroke path" in Illustrator so that I could get this picture done with crisper lines and if not.

So I am preparing a document for printing on an Epilog Zing Laser 10000. I have an outline for a cut I need to make, but I need to accomodate for the kerf of the laser. I am trying to select the circles and use the Offset Path tool to make new circles in the same places slightly smaller. However when I apply the negative offset I get a new circle on the outside of the path and on the inside.
As you can see there is now a larger circle as well as a smaller circle, but the smaller circles don't even have a smaller circle only a larger one despite the fact I entered a negative offset. What can I do to only get the smaller circle in all the circle? Am I even on the right path as far as the path offset tool? Pun intended.

I'm unable to adjust the weight of a path. Here's a 40 sec video (no audio, 1920x1080) that demonstrates I know how to adjust the stroke weight on a path, followed by a demo of it not working when I try to adjust it:
[URL]....
Here's what I do in the video:
First, on a path that allows the change:
Select an elipse.Increase the stroke weight of the elipse.Control-Z to undo.Decrease the stroke weight of the elipse. The above demonstrates I know how to adjust the path weight (at least I think it does).Next, on the path that doesn't allow the stroke width to be reduced: Select path. Increase stroke weight to demonstrate it increases.Control-Z to undo.Decrease the stroke weight to .25 to demonstrate it does not reduce in size.
What do I need to do to decrease the weight of the path I am trying to adjust?

If I have an object that has a large stroke set to align to inside and I outline that stroke, the resulting inner shape isn't a closed path. While this is easy enough to fix, I was wondering if there was a way to avoid it alltohether?
