Illustrator :: Creating 3D Puzzle Pieces With Vector Art
Jun 13, 2013
Ubiquitous Information:
Adobe Illustrator CS6 v. 16.0.3 (32-bit)
Win XP sp3 OS
I have a vector art file of puzzle pieces (connected as though the puzzle has been assembled) that I would like to use with an image file. If I wanted the entire image to appear finished, I would simply place this vector layer above the image layer and voila...finished puzzle. However, I would like to use the 3D effects in Illustrator to make it appear that some of the pieces are not yet seated into place. I know how to do this with the puzzle vector art, but how do I attach or clip the image layer to it so that it rotates, bevels, etc. with the individual puzzle pieces I want to treat in this manner?
creating your own templates for jigsaw puzzle pieces? So far, I can create these in CS6 (no longer seems to have Texturizer with a jigsaw puzzle texture like earlier PS versions) by using a single template (found with a YouTube video on this topic) for a specific number of pieces, confined to the one template.
I would like to make jigsaw puzzles with a variety of pieces, so it would be useful if I could create my own templates with different numbers of pieces. There are PS plugins but these have costs associated with them, especially if used commercially. If possible, I'd rather create my own templates (in PS or AI). For example, I'd like to create an "easy" puzzle template with 20 pieces.
If none exist, an option would be to re-install PS CS 4, 5 or 5.5, alongside CS6. Not sure which is the last version to have Texturizer with a jigsaw texture, but it may be CS4 (by additional download for CS5). But, not having seen or used it in earlier versions, I also wonder if it has sufficient configuration options to choose the number of pieces for a jigsaw? As mentioned, would like to create a range of templates all with different numbers of pieces.
For a promotional campaign I'm working on, I'd like to take a picture and "break it up" into puzzle pieces, then move those pieces around to mimic the look of them floating into place as the image is completed.
I have a great handle on the "move them around" and "float into place" parts, but I'm having no luck with the puzzle piece end of this, that I did previously using blocks. It's the right effect, but I really want that jigsaw puzzle look to this next one.
I am trying to create a puzzle from an image but I am having some trouble with the edges of each puzzle piece. Basically in short what I am doing is this.
1) I load my image in gimp (image layer). 2) Create new white layer (puzzle layer). 3) Use Filters -> Render -> Pattern -> Jigsaw... 4) From the Jigsaw windows I select; Bevel width; 0, Highlight; 0, Jigsaw style; curved. 5) I then select the white area from the puzzle later, copy this area from the image layer, and paste this on a new layer (piece layer). 6) I duplicate the piece layer (duplicate layer). 7) Paint the piece in white in duplicate layer. 8) In duplicate later I select Filters -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur 9) In piece layer I select Filters -> Map -> Bump Map 10) I select the duplicate layer as layer.
My problem is that the edges look really bad. Is there any way how I can make them look better? That is, not so much crippled? My aim is to have each puzzle piece in a different layer since I have to save them in different files. I checked several tutorials on how to create puzzles but all give me similar results.
I am trying to outline my text so that I can apply a gradient color fill and when I go to TYPE > CREATE OUTLINES it is greyed out. I try to expand the appearance and then create outlines. When I try to expand the appearance of the font, it is also greyed out.
I have been able to make a trace file in grey scale but can't seem to export to a .dxf file. When I do the file show a size when I do a properties but shows noting when I import it to EZCAD.
I've got a large file that is about 72x54. I want to cut it up into pieces that are about 24x18 and print it pieces that I will tile together as a whole image after I print them. Is there a way to save out my file as 24x18 pieces?
I'm using Adobe Illustrator CS5.1 in Windows 7. I'm trying to type-set a file and some of the lines of text aren't regularly editable. When selecting a letter it's chopped up in to a bunch of smaller images, thus rendering it impossible to change the font. The customer wants the title on their business card to be un-bolded and I am unable to edit the title. How can I release the type back to an editable form?
I'll omit the long background --- suffice it to say I did this once and need to do it again, but can't recall the toolchain / workflow I used.
I _think_ it was Macromedia FreeHand 8, and that I used a plug-in w/in that program, but I can't recall. Any way other than rendering the drawing as a half-toned bitmap and then tracing it? Or re-drawing the image on top of such a bitmap?
I have created an 18 layered object on Corel Draw X4 using vectors and I would like to make it blur and streak from the back, to create the illusion that it's actually in high motion.
I have tried looking for the answer to my question on this site and elsewhere and only find the answer if it were a bitmap, yet I don't necessarily want to transfer it into bitmap as I would like to keep the smooth edges.
She now tells me she wants it in different sizes without pixel issues. The only way I know to do this is through vectorizing the file. Is there any way at all possible to save this file as a vector without re-creating it?
The file is a multi-layered product which I felt was a bad idea for a logo, but it's what they wanted.
I've read through googling, there are programs to do this for me. I also read somewhere where I could export the file out as a PDF and CorelDraw could do it. But does this mean tracing out the file -- and basically recreating it?
I've been using Illustrator since the late 80's but this request just now came up for the first time, twice in one day: the clients each want me to send them layered files (OK-no problem) wherein all the layers, even the raster layers, register as vector layers. Or at least all the layers, regardless of file-type (vector or raster) are contained within an unflattened Illustrator file. One of the clients specifically asked that the Type layer (No problem-all the type is on one layer) be "vector mapped", whatever that means, while all the other layers can be Photoshop layers, if necessary. So how do I hand them an open, unflattened Illustrator file containing both vector art and raster art? Can it be done in Acrobat, as a PDF? I'm working in AI and PS CS5, but I can and will upgrade if I have to.
I have drawn a vector shape and want to apply 4 colours to it. I have drawn 4 squares with the colours I want and then merged the layers so it becomes 1. I then "selected the pixels" on my shape and cut out that shape from the 4 squares of colour i created. However, when I resize my shape, it blurs as it is not vector anymore.
Is there a way to do acheive the above but keep the shape a vector?
I use photoshop 3.0 and am familiar with basic functions, but now i need to create a vector image - this is for uploading to a t shirt design web site. The writing needs to be in Russian, which i have successfully cut and pasted into photoshop.
I am in the process of sorting out some wood engraving and acid etching of some brass plaques. I would like to know if it is possible to produce a cad drawing from a vector image and if so how ?
This is one of the two images I would like to turn into a cad drawing.
I am trying to create colour samples of vector objects which I have initially drawn in a Purple shade card. Now I would like to have the same object in a blue shadecard and then a green shade card maintaining relationships between the colours in the different parts of the object.
I am trying to make extrusions to an image. I am new to Illustrator and have read that .ai files are the only ones that you can extrude in AE. However when I bring in an .ai file and select create shape from vector layer, a grey square covers the shape. I am assuming that it is a transparancy issue and it is just filling in the size of the .ai project. I could be wrong though.
Im wanting to recreate a cloud vector from a stock image site. Unfortunately i'm rubbish with vectors and have no use making anything like this version.
I've been asked to create some plots of vector arrows showing the results from water current metres, ie each data point has a position (x and y only), direction and a velocity.
I have created a dynamic block to handle the vector data (a simple arrow with a stretch and rotate controls)
What I need now is to somehow read in the values for each block from an excel spreadsheet or txt file?

When creating vector shapes and holding shift the shape do not snap to pixel. Snap to pixels is turned on. Initially when do not hold shift shapes is pixel perfect. As you can see in the image first 2 shapes are made free hand.
I have a ton of stock images with the backgrounds removed that I need made to look like a puzzle piece with a 3D feel and a slight shadow to make it look like it's floating above the canvas.
I also will need to make an indented outline of the image where the puzzle piece would fit. I've attached an example of what I'm looking to do (I don't need the wood background, I think I'd probably just use a solid color).
I take hundreds of photos in burst-mode against a green screen. Using photoshop I made a selection with the magic wand, I inversed the selection, copy and pasted the selection to a new 'empty' layer, deleted the background, then save the result as a PNG file to preserve the transparency.
Obviously I need to have a batch process to do this! The PhotoPaint script recorder would seem to be ideal for this but I'm having a tough time figuring it out. I've managed to mask and copy my selection to a new layer (confusingly called 'object' in Photopaint) and save it. I can't record deleting the background for some reason, neither can I successfully save it as a PNG, on top of that it's now it is saying my file names are invalid! Is there any way of doing what I want with this program?
The left-hand part was created by someone else, using the bend part command in the "modify" tab.The right-hand part was created by me using fold in the sheet metal environment, using the same sketch. Why, is my part shorter?
How do I crop a photo into several pieces like a puzzle. It doesn't matter what shape the pieces are, so long as they will all fit together again. When I use the crop tool, it takes one piece and deletes the rest... Somebody told me to make a duplicate image and crop that way, but how will I know I'm cropping in the right place?
