Illustrator :: Action To View At 3.13%?
Aug 5, 2013
I'd like to use an action to set the view magnification to its smallest, 3.13%. I've tried recording one, using the drop-down menu at the bottom left of the canvas to set the percentage, but that doesn't record. There's no keyboard shortcut to edit.

Adobe illustrator CS5 on Mac OS X 10.7.4.
I used to be able to do something like effect->3d-> revolve, then go to the actions panel and bring up the 3D revolve, click on it and edit it again. Now, when I open the actions panel the simple 3d revolve is replace with a long long list of actions of course I can't bring up the 3d revolve effect and edit it.
I have removed all of the Illustrator prefs in my library file; but, it still does it.

The problem seems to happen ins CS5 and CS6 as well. We have a complex piece of artwork for a foil blister and we use a paragraph of text that has 3 transforms applied to which effectively step and repeat the paragraph of text in a repeat pattern across the artwork. This setup very precisely as it needs to be 100% accurate for print purposes as several units are printed side by side and the repeat runs across the units. Everything is setup correctly in Illustrator and then we re-save as a PDF with 'Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities' on.
We genearally save as a PDF 1.6 but we have tried all the combinations now. The file still looks perfect in Illustrator but when the PDF is opened in Acrobat (any version) the step and repeat (transform) on the paragraph of text is now no longer in alignment on onside of the artwork but still OK on one side. No matter what we do we can't fix this problem andit's recreatable each time. Also it's not file specific as we can build a new file and it will also exhibit the problem. We're only talking about a tiny jump here - <0.2mm but this means the artwork is out of spec.

I have a folder of 350 two page pdfs. I need to change a fill colour on both pages from (RGB 232,234,226) to (250,244,224).There are no original files to work from (these are .qxp files, and I can't open them in CS6).
Is it possible to batch process the lot, without losing the second page?

I'm making an action for folks at work to use (I'm not well versed enough in scripting to script what I want to do, but an action is passable), and part of this action adds a variable into the open document. The thing is, the variable has to be named a certain thing and it keeps defaulting to Variable1.
Currently I have it set up to create the variable, then open the Variable window and then have a Stop with a note on what to do, but if there's a way to just re-name the variable in the action itself that'd be best (I need this to be as... well, for lack of a better term/phrase, idiot-proof as possible).
Without using a script, is it possible to have an AI action delete an existing variable? I.E. if there's a variable named 'test' by default, can I have an action delete the 'test' variable? I tried recording this but it didn't work and I wasn't able to get consistent results.

I deisgn large numbers symbols in emf format and then batch convert these to svg files. I have over 22,000 images at the moment, so being able to automatically batchnconvert is vital.
Currently I to use CS3 to batch with no problems. In CS4 when you open the emf the artboard is the default document size, not the artwork size. So there is a lot of extra white space in the batched svg.
I have just downloaded a trial of CS5 to see if this is now possible as I hate being stuck on an old version. CS5 has the option to fit the artboard to the selected art (object/artboard/fit to selected art) but you cannot seem to save this to an action list.
The actions I want to include are 'open' 'select all' 'fit to selected art' 'save as svg' 'close' . But the artboad step isn't saved.

I am trying to record an action in Illustrator, and most steps work, except when I decide to create a new text layer, I select the type tool, type something into my document, and select another tool to complete the operation, nothing shows up in the action panel, it's as if Illustrator didn't see it. It works fine in Photoshop though.

In CS5, I created a very handy action that allowed me to, with two paths selected, Divide, Ungroup, and Deselect, resulting in the divided paths without having to do each step manually.
In CS6, for some reason this is no longer possible-- if I try to record the same action, after the divide, everything is automatically deselected and I get a "The object "Ungroup" is not currently available" error. Very frustrating that the new version is more troublesome to use!!
I KNOW that it's possible to do this because I was somehow able to fudge it at one point and get this action to work. But I'm not sure what happened-- maybe a step was deleted in my action or something-- but one day it just stopped working. This action is basically THE function I use most in Illustrator given the way I work, and while it's not a huge step, having to manually reclick, ungroup, and deselect is a huge inconvenience.

So normally when I'm drawing I always save a copy of my work to my external. Sometimes I'm paranoid and want to save one to my dropbox folder as well. So I made an action to save a copy to both places but it always names the file with whatever filename I used to set the action. I didn't rename or anything.

I'd like to use the "Jump into Group" feature, but I don't want the background artwork to be grayed, or washed out. Is there any way to disable the default action by AICS 5?
I understand the reasoning, but when working with elements that interact with elements outside the group, the effect is not useful.
I should use the right term… I talking about "Isolation Mode".

Since the Retina update for CS6, my Action hotkeys (F6, F7 etc) now cause palettes to hide/appear, which didn't happen prior to the update. It seems the palettes have been given F keys when they didn't before, but I haven't got a previous version to test on.
For example I have F7 set to trigger an action to make a stroke 0.5pt, and F6 to expand that line. Now, when I hit those keys, the action completes, but the Layers palette and Colors palettes each toggle on and off with each press of the key. As you can imagine this is hugely frustrating given I'm constantly turning layers on and off to check artwork, as well as selecting colours.

I'm trying to create an action to change two specific colors in ~300 different logo files (.ai and .eps). I'm coming from Photoshop so I assume there is a way to create a droplet from an Illustrator Action but that's a different topic.
The colors are Pantone 143 and 287 which need to be changed to 143 U and 287 U, respectively.
Here are the steps that I think I need to record for my action: Unlock all layersAdd new colors to swatch boardSelect all layersRecolor Artwork... (Edit -> Edit Colors -> Recolor Artwork... This step is not recorded?)Save file The problem is that the Recolor Artwork step is not recorded.

As I've done with so many other actions before, I am using Insert Menu Item. But when I choose Window>Arrange>Tile, it doesn't fill in that item. I've tried typing "tile" in the Insert Menu Item dialog, and clicking Find, but that results in Effect> Texture> Mosaic Tiles. Which is not the item I want
Why can't I choose Window>Arrange> Tile? Or, is there a workaround?

I have CS5.5 When I open a jpeg in Illustrator, the "edges" (i.e. the box around the picture) prevent me from doing anything. When you hover over this box it actually says "edge". I am trying to ungroup a picture in order to (hopefully) change the colour of each item. I have tried the help pages as well as the Internet in vain. I have tried another jpeg just in case but the same thing happens. When I open the pic in Illustrator, the edges/box prevent me from proceeding further. the ungrouping and changing colours tasks?

I need to LiveTrace 36 frames of a video, and thought an Action might be the best approach to that. I am aware of the 'insert menu option' thing, which I did, but my problem is that it only traces with the default settings. Now I'd like to use the grayscale-preset, but can't figure out how to do that? I even tried to overwrite the Default-preset with the grayscale-settings, which works perfect as long as I use it 'by hand' - as soon as I use it within an action it goes back to the 'old' default, which is pretty useless for this specific job.
I'm not sure how to explain this better, but what I want it to do is batch-convert 36 jpegs into LiveTrace'd ai-files, using the grayscale-preset for the tracing - open, trace as grayscale, save, close. How to achieve that?
I consider myself a more than experienced user of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and tend to get really annoyed when running into obstacles like this...

I frequently record Illustrator Actions. My actions are quite long, but they all involve three common steps:
-Assigning Notes to shapes
-Assigning Swatches to shapes
-Selecting shapes that have a specific notes
I often need to re-record my actions to repeat all the steps, but to change the notes/swatches that are selected/assigned during the action.
Illustrator has a re-record command. This command is great for changing the value of the note in number 3 of my list. However, it does not work for items 1 & 2 in my list. For these items I have to delete the old step in the action and then record a new step with the new swatch/note.
I know macros in Microsoft Office have an editor which allow you to change values in actions. Is there anything similar for Illustrator actions?You can save an Illustrator action and open it in Text Edit. However, all the attribute/swatch values are saved as weird strings, so I don't know how to change them.

Here's what I want the action to do:
Clear the selected object
Fit the Artboard to the Selected Object
Save for Web and Devices
I can get it to clear and save but I'll be darned if I can get the Fit the Artboard to the Selected Object to register in the recording of the action. No matter what shortcuts I use, menues I use it just won't record it. Is this just a thing Illustrator won't do or any I just missing something?
I do those 3 things listed above ALL the time and it would be nice it I could make those 3 things into 1 action, then add that action to a hot key on my tablet.

to get Illustrator to open the files I needed (I open various files based on input from the user).Then I want to save them back off again using a variance of the file path of the file that was opened.I am having difficulty getting the file path of the open doc ... trying to use
ai::FilePath aiFile();
sAIDocument->GetDocumentFileSpecification(aiFile);
XCode is very unhappy with me at the moment. It is telling me that I am illegally referencing the FilePath object from inside of my button proc.
I don't know if I have the right includes in the file or have obtained the correct suites for what I want to do.The api reference says not to use the AIFilePathSuite but to use the ai::FilePath as a wrapper instead. Any examples of the SaveAs?
Basically what I want to do is take the file I have opened using the OpenAction and modify the path (take off the file name, and the last folder and then append the new folder name and file name). Then perform the save as (using native file format).
//save the doc as id.ai in a folder named as id to hold supporting files
ai::FilePath aiFile;
sAIDocument->GetDocumentFileSpecification(aiFile);
aiFile.RemoveComponent();
aiFile.RemoveComponent();
std::stringstream out;
out << "\" << displayedLogo->getLogoID().c_str() <<"\"<<displayedLogo->getLogoID().c_str()<<".ai";
aiFile.AddComponent(ai::FilePath(ai::UnicodeString(out.str())));

I'm trying to record an Action in AI that, when editing text,
(1) goes to the end of the current line ([End]),
(2) goes to the beginning of the current line while selecting the text ([Shift]+[Home]),
(3) applies a swatch,
(4) moves down three lines ([Down], [Down], [Down]), etc.
When I record this in an action, only the Apply Swatch command appears in the Action. Is this just how-it-is or is there a way to record text navigation in an action?
