GIMP :: Why Such Dull Colors When Saving As JPG

Sep 21, 2013

I'm making a bright montage for a friend and when I save it as a jpg, the colors turn dull. Can you tell me why? Is there a way to keep the bright colors as a jpg?

I'm new to gimp and used to photoshop. I cannot remember having this trouble with photoshop, but I was also working on a PC... so is it a gimp issue or a mac thing?

Illustrator :: Colors Dull When Saving EPS?

Mar 22, 2013

Photoshop :: Colors Appear Dull In Web Browser

Jun 16, 2008

After I've edited a image in Lightroom and then import or view in a web browser all the colors appear dull. However, these images appear normal when opened in Photoshop or in Windows Photo Viewer. If I do ALL the editing in Photoshop alone, these images appear fine when viewed in a browser. So, I'm assuming that the problem lies in Lightroom.

GIMP :: Colors Getting Juiced When Saving As JPG?

May 25, 2011

I've decided to give GIMP a serious test drive after using Photoshop for many years. However, I've run into what I consider a fatal flaw, and after much searching can't seem to find an answer to it's probably something dumb that I'm doing. As a photographer, I shoot in RAW. Of course when I want to post pics on the web I save as a low res .jpg. Thing is, when I get a picture looking how I want (usually I'm saving the files as .psd when working on them) and then go to save it as a .jpg, when I look at the jpg saved it is VERY noticeably different from the file I'm working on. Specifically, the colors and hues get juiced to the point where it looks terrible. It almost seems like GIMP is putting it's own color curve to the files. Same thing happened saving as .png. Saving as .psd seems to save 'correctly' - i.e. no color changes or other weirdness.

After multiple searches, there be a 'feature' that I need to deactivate?

Photoshop :: Colour Profiles - Images Saving Too Dull?

Jan 10, 2013

the record I am using Photoshop 7 (yes it's old, but it suits my needs just fine!) and Windows Vista Home Premium. What I do is take photographs of my artworks, edit them in Photoshop until they look accurate, then post them online. Images have always looked identical in every program, and I had never had any problems, until I got connected to the Internet on Tuesday. This computer has not been connected to the net for a good few years, and so lots of updates got installed. I'm not sure which ones exactly, as my boyfriend took care of that, but I'm convinced this has caused the problems I am having now:

First I found that an image I had edited and saved as .jpg for web use was showing up overly saturated and contrasty in the Windows Photo Gallery preview. I assumed I had saved it wrongly. I re-opened the jpg in Photoshop to check - it looked exactly as I had saved it. I figured something had messed up with Photo Gallery during updates, so I uploaded the jpg to the Internet. The image that uploaded was the overly-saturated, contrasty one.

After realising that suddenly ALL the images I had uploaded online, and all the images saved on my computer, now had this awful over-saturated look, and yet the thumbnails on my desktop looked fine... I realised it must be something to do with the colour profiles, and tried to find out the answer online. My monitor colour profile was set to "21.5 inch monitor" so I changed that to sRGB as default. I can't remember what Photoshop was set to, but at any rate I set it to sRGB also.

I thought I had it fixed, as it seemed to just be Photo Gallery that was not matching up (it was displaying my images with less saturation than as I saved them). However today I took a new photo of a drawing I'm working on, to load onto my blog. I had to take it into Photoshop to make edits and correct, as always. I opened my photo in Photoshop... lo and behold, far too contrasty and saturated!!

This time, Windows Photo Gallery preview is showing the (unedited, straight out of camera) photo as it should be... Photoshop opens it too contrasty.I made my edits anyway, saved for web as .jpg, checked the jpg in Photo Gallery before uploading... It saved duller than it should have done!
Uploaded the jpg to the internet... and I have the dull image uploaded.

So first they were too contrasty, now they're too dull. Being an artist who displays work online and has a certain reliance on the internet... my images have to be accurate and consistent all the way through. Is there anything I can do to set things back to the way they were before?

GIMP :: Saving Images For Web Without Colors Changing

May 1, 2011

I probably overlooked something in the documentation, but I have a hard time saving an image with the exact colors I want:

1- I have created an image with a specific shade of blue in background: #e4eaef.
2- If I use the GIMP color picker, I can see that the background is exactly #e4eaef.
3- I save the image as a png.
4- I open the png in the browser (Firefox), and I measure the color of my background with a system tool (Digital Color Meter), and it has changed to #dde5ea, which is not cool, because it doesn't blend on my web page.

I also used Digital Color Meter to measure the color directly on Gimp, and I have also #dde5ea.

Illustrator :: Colors Changing When Saving AI To EPS

Oct 3, 2012

I've been designing weekly large banners in Illustrator for the past month.  I am on banner #5 and have had no problems previously.  Everytime, I open the previous banner AI file, make the design changes, and save it as the new banner, and then do a Save As to an Illustrator EPS file for easy printing on our large format printer.  It has been easy and routine.

This time I went through the same process, but when I save the Illustrator EPS file, the colors are coming out incorrect - particularly darker.  My medium dark blues in the design look almost black in th EPS file.  I tried printing, thinking maybe it was just how the file was displaying in Preview on my screen, but nope.  The colors print incorrectly too.

I was able to solve the problem by switching the color setting to RGB, but I would like to understand what happened and why the change?  Everything was working great in CMYK for the past 4 weeks, but it's not working now.

CorelDRAW X6 :: Colors Not Saving Correctly As Shown In Program?

Apr 9, 2012

Using X6 and for some reason when i save a document as a jpg or pdf and then upload it via email attachment and or forum attachment it shows up COMPLETELY different than what the program file looks like. I design in CMYK and know monitors show RGB but i have NEVER had a issue like this when using Adobe programs but i have switched to Corel and am having this issue. What i end up having to do is take a screen shot then paste it into MS PAINT, yes PAINT and then save it as a jpg there for it to display correctly colorwise. This works for jpegs but not pdf's with multiple pages that need to be sent to my designers and printers.

The saved file looks like it should on my desktop and laptop and looks like crap on my iphone, ipad and email attachments etc on the customers end.

I have embedded the cmyk profile, tried proof colors on and off. Nothing changes it except for saving in RGB mode which throws the pdf's off as they often go directly to my printers for production.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6 :: Pantone Colors When Saving Down To X4

Aug 31, 2012

I just upgraded to X6 from X4 about 2 weeks ago. I do all of my work in spot colors since i'm in the screen printing industry. Since not all of my clients have upgraded I still have to save down my work to X4. This is where the problem begins. When its been saved down it's creating a LOT of extra colors in the print separations. It's a lot of the same color. For instance I used black, Pantone Rhodamine Red and Pantone Yellow...when I save it down to X4 it's giving me 2 blacks, 3 Rhodamine Reds and about 10 Pantone Yellows. When I export to pdf and open in Corel X4 it doesn't do this...only when I save down. I don't want to have to export and open each time I have to send a file.

CorelDRAW X3 :: Dull Colours When Publishing To PDF?

Jun 26, 2008

In my job as a cartographer I regualrly get asked to create advertisements for mining magazines. The ads usually contain both text and images. The colours I use in Coreldraw are PMS colours and the images are CMYK colours.

The problem I have is when I publish my ad to PDF the PMS colours always come out fine (which I would expect) but the image colours always look dull and washed out. The only time the images look fine when I publish to PDF is when I use output to RGB hut the printers then reject my ad (naturally). Is there something I need to do to the image in Photopaint?

Lightroom :: 5 Photos Are Dull And Flat?

Jul 27, 2013

I am editing photos for a friend on LR5. The catalog is on an external drive. She starts the edit on her computer (a Mac) and then I take the drive to finish (I also use a Mac). The problem is, when I open the catalog, her edited photos come up beautiful at first, but when I click on them, they come up dull and flat. This is not all of her photos, either, just some of them. I have tried to figure out what is going on, why they are like this. I want to be able to sync settings to make this editing easier, but when I sync, all of the photos end up flat and dull. They are Canon raw files and we are using the VSCO film presets.

GIMP :: Imported GIF Changes Colors?

Mar 5, 2011

How do I keep my GIFs the same colors as I created them? When I import the GIFs into GIMP the colors are changed on some of them. Are there different types of GIF (color resolutions)?

The attached GIF should have a gray border but in GIMP the border is yellow, other colors are changed too. The "PS" letters should be purple-pink but GIMP changes them to black, basically all the colors change.

I am trying to create an animated GIF and the GIFs are imported as layers

I've noticed the problem GIFS have a lower case file extension (.gif) whereas the OK images have an upper case file extension.GIF

It's OK I can simply open the lower case .gifs in MS Paint and then "save_as" which saves them as an UPPERCASE .GIF file extension and then GIMP doesn't change the colors. Problem solved but it is odd that it occurred in the first place. I wonder what was happening?

OH NO... it is still changing the colors. I think I will just do a screen grab and save that as a completely new GIF which stops the colors changing but it is a big hassle because I have about 9 images to change.

NO I STILL CAN'T FIX IT How can I stop GIMP changing the colors of imported GIF layers in a GIF animation?

In the image seen below, I see that it can remember 12 colors in the main palette on the left, but with the color dialog palette on the right, there seems to be no way to add or change colors there, but it has more room than for 12 colors.

Is there a plug-in that allows GIMP to remember more than 12 colors? I did a search in the plug-in registry but I didn't find one.

GIMP :: Count Colors Used?

Jan 22, 2014

There's really only one, well, one-and-a-half features that I still miss since I move from PaintShop to Gimp.

Count colors used.

It was a simple command in the color menu that would tell me how many unique colors were in the image I was working with. I clicked it and I got a dialogue box that told me.

Is there any feature like that in Gimp that I simply never found? Or is there a plug-in or something that I can add to give me this functionality?

Another feature I only kinda miss was an extended way to reduce colors. In Gimp I'm wither working in RBG (full color) or indexed, which is 256 colors. (And greyscale which is just a form of indexed.) But in Paintshop I recall being able to reduce the color count to larger numbers, like 1k and 4k and 10k or the like. I never actually found a practical use for this feature, so I only half-miss it. But even so, I might as well ask about it as well. Is there any way to add that functionality into GIMP?

GIMP :: 2.6.11 - Exchanging Two Colors

Mar 9, 2012

I am trying to exchange two colors. However when I used 'Colours -> Map -> Colour Exchange' and specify the 'from' and 'to' colors appropriately... the original color does not change. e.g. I have a blue solid circle. I want to make it green (it is anti-aliased so can't use fill). The 'from' color is set to blue (using the color picker) and I specify a color green. However the circle remains the original blue.

I have definitely selected the correct layer, however maybe this is the wrong tool to use? I have already looked a tutorials and it doesn't seem to work for me. I'm using GIMP 2.6.11.

Lightroom :: 4 - Second Monitor Images Gray Dim Dull

Aug 26, 2012

Upgraded to LR4. When selecting the 2nd monitor (Gateway) all photo images show as dim dull dark greyed out.  If I move LR window from primary (NEC) to the Gateway all menu items and selections normal.  All images are dull dim grey including the histogram.  Selecting 2nd monitor feature places Loupe on primary display (NEC) works just fine.

If I reset Windows 7 and designate primary monitor as Gateway the problem remains unchanged.

If I place main LR window on Gateway and then select preview of 2nd monitor (CTRL-click) the pop up window renders correctly on the Gateway.

Turned off all icc profiles for monitors no improvement.

Windows 7PRo 64-bit 8GB RAM quad processor all drivers up to date.  NVidia card up to date.

Other non LR windows programs and images opened on the second monitor look just fine. The Gateway will render correctly the 2nd monitor pop up preview image; so the monitor will properly display.

If I have some time I will go back to LR3 and double check that everything works fine.
