GIMP :: Text In Exported PDF Is Searchable And Copyable But Font Size Shrinks
Nov 19, 2012
I have recently upgraded to Gimp 2.8.3 on my Mac OS Snow Leopard, primarily for the new "export to PDF" feature that would keep text searchable within PDF.
The results are very odd... The text in the exported PDF is, indeed, searchable and copyable, but the font size shrinks drastically (see attached screenshot).
If I the image map I use for my website.....could have copyable text.
For instance.... here is a link to a page on my website...the whole body of the webpage is a png image that I made using gimp and the image map option. The problem is that the text is not copyable...since it is part of the image. Is there a way to keep the format as it is, but make the test copyable as if it were a website made by the regular, HTML programming way?
Whenever I start a new box of text, I set it to an area big enough to write. As soon as I type the letter the box automatically shrinks to the size of the first letter. This only happens sometimes, but when it happens I am frustrated. Do you know why this happens, and can I stop it?
This is issue arises when i have been working on a drawing for a while with multiple xref/data shortcuts. The model space text is all the correct size yet once I enter a layout the annotative text relating to 3D elements such as Alignments/Profile Station/Elevation Labels shrink to 1/25 their size. Other annotative objects such as Mtext and Multileaders are not effected. Attached are before and after pictures.
I've been banging my head on this for a couple days now and to no avail. I am accessing 2004 DWG files through AutoCAD 2013 in order to update dates and re-print to searchable PDFs for our facility team, however, I cannot get the DWG text (stand alone or room tag attribute) of the file to become searchable in Acrobat X. Being a 2004 file and due to previous manager decisions, all text in the DWG file is an SHX style, and I've attempted to change over to the True Type format in hopes that it would clear the issue up, but the base DWG file doesn't seem to agree with changing current fonts for either stand alone or within the ROOMTAG block itself. I've tried all settings in the Acrobat "convert to PDF" settings menu without success.
I'll be migrating all of our drawings into a Revit format for this effort next year so this is the last year for the "legacy" drawing files that have accumulated over the years...and I've already tested this in Revit with much success!
I'm having an issue when printing to PFD from Photoshop. My image size is 7" x 10" and when I view it in the print preview window (I add crop marks) it looks fine printing to 8.5" x 11". Once printed, the image shrinks to about 1/10 the size and is in the upper left hand corner of the letter sized sheet.
Using Boxed VS ProX5, windows 7 home. VS seems to somehow shrink the file size when rendering and I am perplexed why.
For example, I edited a 2 1/2 hr project and hit the share tab to create a dvd 9.5 VS indicated that I was oversize for that size disc and I had to reduce the bit rate to compensate. (attempts to burn it oversized seem to produce errors at 99%). Based on my modified project settings, the colored bar at the bottom of the screen indicated that I was at the maximum end of yellow, and over 7 GB in size but my rendered iso image was only 6.2 GB. How does this happen? How can I create oversized DVD files? I prefer to "shrink" them in another program.
I create a text box and paste in the info into it. Now I want to resize the box to fit the space available but the handles end up changing the font size. I need the software to change the auto line feeds as the box's size is changed.
I am trying to PASTECLIP a portion of one drawing to another. The original drawing is the correct size however when it is put into the second drawing it shrinks exactly 3 times its size. I have checked the properties and they are the same.
Is there a way to search for text through all the DWG files within a drive (note, not just within a file or a folder)?
we lost all data on a drive (a RAID, no less), and had to do a raw file search for files. So what we ended up with is a pile of files that the reconstruction software figures is a bunch of "word", "pdf", "excel" and ... "dwg" files, but no directory structure, no date, and _no_ file names!
We are able to search easily PDF, WORD, and EXCEL files, but not DWG files. We know about the search facility in AutoCAD (we are using LT 2012, soon to install 2013, but not before we deal with this issue since the file structure changed). We're on Windows 7, but aren't on a server.
I have been asked to plot my drawings to "PDF's that retain the text (as text) from the original design application. And then when the PDF is opened they can do a serach for a specific text"
Am making a brochure, use the pre-set A5 print size. All great, but when converting the XCF file to PDF the fonts are not represented correct and are drastically reduced in size.
I tried the flattening option, but that takes a lot of resolution/sharpness out of the file and makes it less fit for printing.
Any method other than 'font mapping' to convert drawing file to PDF with text searchable feature. Because we are having huge repository of drawing files its difficult go back and do font mapping. Even its works for only at MTEXT.
So, any converter which converts the drawing file to PDF with text searchable PDF.
Not sure if I have some option checked here I shouldn't. I am working on an image where I want an 8 pt font. When I use text tool > horizontal type tool > I make sure I have verdena size 8pt font checked. I have made an image with this font size before and it turned out fine. However, now when I use this font it is huge, looks like size 20 or something. It is at 100% so it should look a lot smaller. I also put the old image next to it and the font is a lot smaller then the new one. Any idea on what's going on?
I just upgraded to GIMP 2.8.4 for Mac after spending months using an older version. At the bottom of the image window are tips for using whatever tool one is currently using. Unfortunately, these tips are TINY! I can barely see them! Is there any way to increase their size via GIMP preferences?
Note that I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to editing program code so if this is required I will need specific step by step instructions.
EDIT: Additionally, I've noticed that image windows always stay behind the toolbox and layer windows. Is there any way to reverse the ordering? (So that image windows can move in front of the toolbox/layer window?) With multiple image windows open on a small screen I need all the space I can get.
I need to extract text and font from a text layer. No problem, I thought, with gimp-text-layer-get-text and gimp-text-layer-get-font.
But I find that the original text layer was cropped withplug-in-autocrop-layer. Nevertheless Gimp lets me edit the text with the text edit tool - after a confirmation dialog.
But I can't get the text with script-fu. Is there a way to manage it? There are many files involved.
i want to make a TEXT ONLY LAYER.if i want change a font or size, just click a layer and change a font or size. like-photoshop.but, not same-photoshop. i think layer is make a ONLY ONE.
I have lot of various fonts and various size of font used in a particular illustration. Can i able to know all the fonts and its size used in a single shot. Instead of going and checking one by one.
In PSP 8, if I have many text entries within a single vector layer, all with same font size and type, is there a way to change the font size for all of them at once?
I am doing a menu for a client and it seems that every time I put a specific font size such as 10pt. in a text frame..it changes to a size 11.3245pt. every time I open the file back up to work on it again.
How do I prevent this? Or is there something I am doing wrong in the text frame?
I am facing the following problems while working on the navigation bars.
a) I am not able to create a new on of my own, I have to again and again drag and drift a navigation bar from the Designers Gallery, and right click and more buttons to it . What If I want to create a button of my own design ???
b) Even after selecting the navigation bar, I am not able to change the colour of the background as well as the text, am not able to change the font size of the text, the font type am also not able to change, even If I go the the menu style tab of the navigation properties tab. How do I change these specifications ?
I am using PSE12 with Mac OS X Mavericks. If I use the type tool, type some text then want to change maybe the font or size, the text disappears! If I set the parameters before typing everything is OK, but it is really inconvenient.
Also when I do a return in text the first letter of the next line is always a capital whether or not I start a new sentence!
I saw scripts that adapt a box to the amount of text, but i'am looking for a script that does it the other way around. I have a amount of text that has to fit in a predefined box for example 50 x 30 mm.
The script has to solve the text overflow issue by adapting the fontsize. Is this possible?
Using photoshop CS6 on Mac, I am seeing a problem with one of my batch processing sript who's only task is to apply an embossed water mark to images which I have resized such that the longest side is always 500px. (short side varies depending on how I have cropped).
In most cases, the piece of text I am adding to the image appears fine. But then for no apparent reason, it will suddenly apply the text (which I have set to 24pt) and it is way to big. To address the issue, I have to reduce the font size (via the actions pallate) down as far as 8 pt. Then it starts to appear more or less correctly (for a while) until maybe a few weeks later when I open up photoshop to run the job again and suddenly 8 pt font is WAY too small and I have to bump it up to 24 pt again.
I have found this post from April where the bug was acknowledged in the beta:

I now have the official release of CS6, and I am still seeing this issue. And for clarification, here's what the issue is:
- I start off creating a text layer with a font size of 20px. - I then transform this layer to make it larger. - I copy the layer over so I have identical text layers. - When I select each individually, I am shown the new, larger font size, we'll just say 40px. But when I select both together, it shows the original font size of 20px in the character palette. When I increase the font size with both selected to say 30px, it actually makes the text more like 60px.
1. Create a document and type some text in a font size, for example I used a 30 points size.
2. Duplicate this layer.
3. Make the text layer it bigger but don't use the Text tool, use Transform. The font size will be shown in the Text panel accordingly. Deselect this layer.
4. If you select the layer or point the Text tool the size will be right (42,66 pt)
5. Select all the text in the layer you just made bigger, the panel will show that text is still 30 points!
I wanted to upload photos to clarify the problem, but the browser disn't allow me to do so, although pics are 450px wide and less than 2.0 MB each.
I have added 9pt vector text in multiple places of an image. Now I realize it should have been 8pt. I can add new text as 8pt but cant figure out how to change the point size of vector text that is already on the image. If I select a vector text object and then change the point size on the "Size" drop down menu at the top nothing happens. If I right click the vector object and select Edit Text I can change the actual text but not the font or its size. If I right-click the vector object and select Properties I can change stroke, fill, line style etc but this window does not include font or size. How do I change the font and point size for existing vector text objects?
