I can't get the path tool to give me handles. I create a path with two points and when I grab the segment and drag it the anchors move with it. This used to work fine where the anchors would stay and the dotted lines and handles would pop out and I could manipulate the handles. I recently reloaded my system so has something changed? I'm using the latest stable Debian and it looks like Gimp 2.6 is loaded.

View 1 Replies View RelatedRight after one makes a selection, say by using the Rectangle SelectTool, is presented with handles that allow altering the selection.
If one then selects another tool without deselecting is being deprivedof these handles while the selection remains active thus rendering himunable to alter the selection in that fashion.
Thus forming my question: is there a way to make these handles to(re-)appear on a non-freshly created selection?
I am a graphics designer that uses GIMP and Cinema 4D on Wine. I find it very difficult to be able to take logos that I have made and have them be compatable with C4D. If there is a function already that makes this possible that would be great but for now I can's seem to find one.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a PSD which has a layer with a path (vector) on it. In Photoshop this can be manipulated as a path/vector. In GIMP it is just treated as a bitmap. I can see how I can draw new paths, but it doesn't seem to be recognizing the imported path. Is there something I need to do to make it recognize the paths?

I just downloaded Gimp yesterday and it is way different than the version I had on my last computer. I have things figured out for the most part, the main function I can't seem to find is how to "Simplify" paths. It seems like I used to use CTRL L or something like that and it would smooth out my lines a bit.

I've worked out how to use paths, so I can make text appear along a curve which is great. My problem is that I have a logo and I want text curving around the top of it, and then some text curving around the bottom (curving upwards). There is more text on the top curve so it fills the entire path, but the text at the bottom is shorter and so it doesn't reach the end, it justifies to the left of the path. How do I position it so that it aligned to the centre of the path (it doesn't necessarily have to take up the entire length of the path, I just want it to be central to the logo above it.

This occurs regardless of image file opened. Not sure how long this has been the situation as I have not been using gimp on the computer where this problem is occurring for a couple months. Am not an advanced user though have used it occasionally for years. All other Selecting Windows...Dockable Dialogs... actions bring up window boxes normally. Tab does toggle display for the Toolbox etc. Just Layers, Channels, or Paths have an issue and I suspect it may have occurred because they were sharing the same window box. I did reset Preferences.
I am able to readily create layers on top of a base image but without the dialog box, only have access to the last one created. Also can merge down the last new layer or flatten the image. My suspicion is gimp may be displaying the dialog box at XY coordinates beyond my monitor screen displayable coordinates. There is a configuration file that saves the last used settings that I can simply delete?
How do you get the 'Layers, Chanells and Paths' tool bar to appear. I am running Xubuntu 12.04, Gimp 2.6.12 and it does not appear. Can not upgrade to 2.8 because Ubuntu Software Center does not have it. I need this sub-window to wotk with test-along path.

It's not very useful in my case. I have an image with several layers and a bunch of paths related to different layers. So I need to export only paths which "belong" to a selected layer, so to speak. Of course, I can edit SVG by hands, but I wonder if some decent tools there exist for this task.

I like GIMP and it's stable nature along with everything else... in addition to allot of standard photo editing and graphics creation, I recently used it for some of the animation filters, which are nice.
The only problem I'm having is that when I create a path, or multiple paths, and have them in the paths palette, after I save and close the file that contains the paths, the next time I open that file my paths are gone... completely disappeared.

ALSO, it seems to jump from the layer i selected to another layer whenever I click "EDIT."
What is weird is that I was able to create new text prior to this, but not anymore. I am editing a photoshop document, but it's now saved as XCF. Also, it's gimp 2.8.0
I just "upgraded" (sic) to Mavericks and my beloved Photoshop Elements no longer works. Until I can afford to replace it, I'm trying ... emphasis on the "trying" bit ... to make do with GIMP.
do I simply select something from one graphic and then copy it to another? Every single time I close the outline with the selection tool, the damned selection disappears! What is THAT about? Why does it do that? I just want to select an area of one photo, copy it and then paste it into another.
I encountered an interesting problem yesterday while trying to export an image as a jpg. I've outlined what I did.
I had a jpg file of dimensions 150wide X 100 high. Lets call this small.jpg . I had another jpg image that was much larger. Let's call this large.jpg . I wanted to change the size of large.jpg to have the same dimensions as small.jpg.
For convenience, I pasted the large.jpg onto small.jpg and then used the resize tool. When I clicked on export I got the following error-
Saving `large_to_small.jpg` failed
JPEG image plug-in could not save image. I could have sworn that I've done this before and it worked. So I wasted a lot of time trying to `fix` GIMP.
Solutions
1. Don't paste onto a pre-existing image. Create the canvas size you require then paste the image then resize and export.
2. If you do happen to paste an image onto another for resizing. Close all the files except the current one you are working with. Now choose select all and copy then go to file >>create>> from clipboard. The new image should be of the same dimensions. Export.
One thing I should mention, even though there was an error, the image large_to_small.jpg was created (file size 0 bytes). As you would expect, the jpg file couldn't be opened in GIMP.

View 28 Replies View RelatedI don't seem to be able to click on the canvas in GIMP. I installed a tablet(Wacom Bamboo) and assumed that the pen wasn't working correctly until I realised that I couldn't click with my mouse either. The mouse and tablet work fine in other programs. It didn't have the problem until I installed the driver for the tablet(I think). I can use any feature that doesn't involve clicking on the canvas(adjusting curves, scaling, changing the saturation, etc.), I just can't do things like make a selection, or use the paintbrush.
I'm using GIMP 2.6.11 on Ubuntu 11.04.
However I thought I will learn by experimenting and loaded a JPEG image. The image has a white border. I wanted to remove the border so selected it with magic wand and tried the delete command. Nothing happened! I tried to google around and came across floating layer. Checked this too. Saved the image as GIMP image opened but the border refuses to leave the image. How can I remove this border and make it transparent?
