GIMP :: Smoothing Oval Border
Sep 27, 2011
I created an oval: 418x528 and using stroke, gave it a one pixel border. Unfortunately, the oval border looks not smooth. I'd like to give it a wider border, but the unsmoothness looks worse the wider you make the border.

I have a drawing that has a white background.
I would like to add more to the white background to make it bigger without having to stretch it and distort the image.
I want to place a circle shaped outline border around the original image with a set border thickness and color and be able to crop/remove the portion of the image beyond the outline, changing it from a square/rectangle image to a circular image.
If I am not able to change the drawing to have a round outer border from square, how can I make the outer parts past the newly created circular outline transparent?

I Googled and found the steps for creating a colored circle with theborder size I preferred. Cool. But when it came to something as simple as copying that circle (it's in a new layer) and changing the size, Google was pulling up irrelevant sites. Yes I've seen the official docs, but they're very detailed and I'm in a "get it done now" environment.
My base image is a screen capture of the most commonly-used screen in our main software here. I want to create copies of my groovy new circle and place it over the buttons employees will use each day. Plus re-size the circles as needed. (Note that I've been using Photoshop in the past, and I don't know how to "see" each new layer in GIMP.)

I've been using gimp for awhile now and have had great success using itto retouch about a zillion scans of old family photographs. but other than then few things I need in order to do that (paintbrush, clone tool, rotate tool and crop) I am still largely ignorant of how to use gimp. (There's just so much functionality in there, and I'm sure that I don't even have any use for about 90% of it.)
Anyway, a relative just sent me an old old family photo that some nitwit, perhaps a generation or two ago, did some seriously violence to with a pair of scissors. To salvage this one and to make it look presentable I really need to be able to take the scan I have of it and crop it into a oval shape.(Yes, it is a portrait.)
So anyway, how do I do this? It isn't obviously. I already did manage to figure out how to make a selection of the exact size and shape (and location)of oval that I want, and I _did_ make a selection like that... at least I_thought_ that I did... but then when I did crop-to-selection I ended up with the picture cropped to a rectangular shape, where the rectangle in question is, quite apparently, the rectangle which only and exactly contained the oval that I had selected earlier.
I'm sort-of guessing that what I really want is gonna end up being another one of these things that ends up involving multiple layers... yes? I mean of course, what I _really_ want to end up with is an image that _is_ in fact a rectangle, but everything outside of my selected oval has to end up being painted total white (255).
This is a strictly B&W image, BTW... just like all really old family photographs everywhere. How to fade the edges of the oval slowly to white.

I have a rectangular image. Is it possible to use the "Eclipse tool", and make a oval shape..and take my rectangular image, and completely conformed to an oval shape, no longer showing the rectangular corners (the whole image totally conformed to OVAL).
Second question...with GIMP, can one take an image, and make the edges look like there tattered, or worn?

I am trying to create an oval image for a button on a webpage. I make the canvas size about 90x40 and then select the ellipse tool and fill the canvas with it. I then bucket fill the circle/oval with a green color. How do I knock the rest of the white corners out of the image? I only want to green oval to be the final jpg.

I took up the program to facilitate completion of a small project for a 16-year old daughter that's making an incredible recovery from a serious illness. I provide this background because I'm currently "a bit" impatient - and I'm HOPING GIMP can be used to get this done. What we're looking at is a VERY small "Heart Locket" our daughter was given at birth. What I'm looking to do is create "photo masks" for my wife and my faces so we can "craft" the photos in the requisite size (~1/8"x1/8") and shape (heart)! So far I've succeeded in importing a photo I'd taken of the Locket's interior with a Macro Lense at a "workable size," such that the finished "mask" can be scaled to match the photos we're using, then scaled down to final size in photographic process. And while I'm VERY impressed with Path Tool, I CAN'T find a way to eliminate the tedium of "hand-smoothing" the result. I actually found a plugin that'd been developed for this purpose in 2009, but fails to install because it's looking for (what I have to assume is) an older dll. I CAN'T be unique in this need, can I?

This is easily the best method I have found so far for retouching skin and textures in GIMP. Using wavelet decompose you can work on the different frequencies of features in an image independently and with unparalleled control.

I'm in need to be able to add a border around a PNG graphic, detail as follows:
1. Graphic is rectangular w/transparent background
2. Need to add a border around to match colour of graphic, &
3. (this is where I've hit the wall) The graphic isn't centred within the edges of the graphic "frame", ie: there's the pic part of the logo with text beneath, the text is closer to one edge of the "frame" than the other.
That item 3 above is the problem--otherwise it seems I could easily use the Filters-->Decor-->Add Border filter.
after the PNGs, I have WMF, EPS & TIFF formats waiting for the same.

1. Get your image you want your text on. For this tutorial, I just have a basic wood background.
2. Type your text. check the box labeled "anti-aliasing" for a smoother transition. For the purposes of the tutorial, I chose a very simple white text, but you can use whatever you want.
3. Go to Layer > Layer boundary size. You'll want to have a boundary that is about double the current size, or so. You probably won't need that much, though. Unless you're trying for a really big border. :P
->
4. Go to Layer > Transparency > Alpha to selection on your text layer. This will put a selection around your text. Then go to Select > grow. Depending on the size of your text, and your desired results, you may have to play around with the amount for a bit. For this tut, I chose 5 pixels.
5. Make a new transparent layer, and place it underneath the text layer. Select the color you want your outline to be as the foreground or background color. I chose black. Then go to edit > fill with bg/fg color, whichever has the color you want your outline to be. Then go to select > none, and there you have it!

I have difficulties managing the following: I have a disk area (A minimap) and I want to add one (or two) small borders (that look bumpy) around the disk.
I basically want to achieve something like this: [URL]..... As you can see it has an outer border ring (with a very small line in the middle) and another inner ring. The outer ring drops a little shadow onto the inner ring.
I tried the following: Made a circle (with selection tool) -> Selection -> Shrink (3px) -> Filled with grayish color. Now I have a ring and I tried to apply various filters onto this ring to create a border (mainly decor -> border filter, but they all produced weird results).

I'm having an extremely hard time blending two photos. I have the following two photos which I want to blend: and
What I want to do is keep the sky from the second image. I want the border to be at the top of the trees. Now the edge of the trees is very uneven and difficult to select.
So I thought I would get around this by using a layer mask. To achieve this I took one of the images:
- desaturated it/turned it into monochrome/or decompose it
- used either levels or curves to try and get us much contrast as possible
and then used the resulting image as a mask. Unfortunately what happens is I get what looks like chromatic abberation at the edge of the trees and sky. Look here:

Every tutorial in the world says, if you want a border around your text, you must do the following:
1: Press the "Create Path From Text" button
2: Nope that's it it's a one-step process
How can I possibly screw this up? Well... that button... I don't see it. It is no where to be found. Where is it?

I like to put a border on the photo I upload online. These pictures are usually 600 X 400 pixels.A 2 pixels line is just perfect for my use but...it's impossible to have a 2 pixels pencil. You can create a 1 pixels pencil or a 3 pixels pencil but not a 2 pixels one. Why?
At one point, what I was doing is, select all, then shrink the selection by 5 pixels(yes,I like to add the border inside the image)and then use the marching ants as a guide and trace a 3 pixels wide solid line and then erase a 1 pixel line using the eraser but...it's extremely tricky(and time consuming)because there's no real 1 pixel eraser...it's a cross made of 5 pixels and if you're not just at the right spot it erases the thing just bad.
Also,I use to do it by: selecting all, then shrink the selection by 5 pixels and then strike the selection with my chosen pencil but...the damn line is 5 pixels away from the border of the picture on the left side and on top but on the right side and at the bottom, the damn line is only "4 pixels" away.Sure 1 pixel off seems not that much but on a small picture 600 X 400, it shows a lot. How come the selection can't be stricken with an even result?

I had a question on how to do a specific border. I need a border around the edges (the Fuzzed Border is just fine), and I can do the border, but what's really getting me is making the fuzzed section transparent. Like the border done needs to slowly fade to a cut-out.

I am trying to use the function to outline a border to text with the function "Path to text" but no matter how I try the path will only use 16-19 letters in one row.
I have read several guides on how to do this and no one mention anything about this issue. As long as I have 16 letters on one line it works, but I have more it will just skip them.
I write the text:
12345678901234567890
Then I click an choose "path to text", but when I do it will only create a path of 1234567890123456 and skip the rest. If I write text on several rows it will use up to 16 letter on each row.
Is there an limit to "Path to text" .

I’m trying to figure out if there is a way to scale a “border” around a rectangle or square? Or, put another way, keeping an image the same size, but enlarge an inner rectangle or square without cropping the “border.” To try and add context, imagine a bezel used for an arcade machine. A border with a cut-out in the middle to view the screen. Imagine you wanted to preserve the information on the bezel border, but increase the size of the cut out.
