GIMP :: Size Of Background Layer
Mar 13, 2011
when i make a new project it says what size you want it to be set on. i want it to be set on a standard size of printing paper. so i measured a printer paper and put in the details as millimeters in the box and set the size to 100 but when i hold up a paper to the screen its not the same size its much smaller. How would i make it actual size of the paper? (8.5x11) and if it does not print the actual size how could i make it so when i print it it does not make it bigger or smaller to fit on page or whatever. I know this is very basic but its been bugging me forever and i need it to print the exact size.

I'm creating a drawing with multiple layers, but I keep dragging the background layer by accident. I've tried selecting the layer I want to move before dragging with the move tool, but this doesn't stop it. I've tried selecting the chain in the layers toolbox, but this just locks the layers into one group which gets dragged off the edge of the canvas. Is there any way to render the background stationary?
I'm using GIMP 2.8.0

A while ago, I wanted to add a border in the background color around a layer. So, I increase Layer Boundary Size using the corresponding tool. So far so good. I even wrote into a script, combined with adding drop shadow, see [URL].......
Then, I bought a new computer. I knew it. Never update or upgrade.
Now, when I increase the layer boundary size, it does increase the size of the layer, but the "border" is now transparent. I know, I know, I can fill it up using the bucket fill tool, but first of all this is annoying, and second of all, I am really wondering: what happened? Why did it work before, and doesn't it work now anymore? I am baffled. I see three possibilities:
- The GIMP installation on my new computer has some global setting differently which I am missing
- GIMP was updated and this has changed
- this is a bug, or at least a quirk, having something to do with old computer running on Win7 and new computer running on Win8

Is it possible to select a part of an Image on the background layer. And when you delete it, its removed from the rest of the layers as well.
Because I'm working with a DDS image and it has mipmaps (smaller and smaller copies of the background made as seperate layers.)

I have a five-frame animation to which I would like to add a background and I don't have enough GIMP knowledge to do it myself, so I've been trying to use the merge-anim script (URL...). When I use it under Debian Linux, with GIMP 2.6.10 (I have also tried it with GIMP 2.6.11 under Windows 7) however, it gives two error messages.
The first is "Plug-In 'Merge layer with others' left image undo in inconsistent state, closing open undo groups."
The second is "Error while executing script-fu-merge-anim: Error: not enough arguments."
The merge never does occur. The script doesn't have any real instructions and I haven't seen any anywhere else (just a number of example results that don't show the steps take), so my first attempt was with all the default values that came up and then other attempts were with changes to various options. None of them made any difference. The error messages were always the same and the script-fu console did not show any messages.
Do any of you know if this script, as old as it is, even still works with GIMP 2.6.10, or is it just a completely dead project that would only work with older versions of GIMP?
If it SHOULD work with GIMP 2.6.10 for Linux or GIMP 2.6.11 for Windows, what I should do to fix these errors and get it to work properly.
If there's no hope for the script, how DO I make a "background" layer the background for each frame of an existing animation. Also, if it makes any difference, the background I'm trying to use is a gradient created by GIMP.

I'm always cropping pieces of a large composition, then saving, then undoing and repeating. I noticed that GIMP has an understanding of layer size. If I could only save the image based on the layer size, I wouldn't need to crop every time, then undo. It would just know!
Aside from the redundancy, sometimes changes are made after cropping and saving and I am unable to return back to my original document size after exhausting undo's. Which means that everything else in the image is gone.

I am trying to do some pixel art. what i want to do is take my concept art which is pretty good size and make a video game sprite over the top of it. So i would need to have a background image which is large and a foreground that is WAY SMALLER but lines up with it.

I have 2 layers and I want to mask one through the other. I've attached a png showing what I want. I tried to attach an .xcf file, but it won't do it, which seems strange for a gimp forum. Anyway, one layer is the text (black outline) and one layer is a colorful background. In the xcf, the background layer is entirely filled with the colorful stuff, but I want it to only show through the interior of the letters (as shown in the png).

If there is a setting to increase the size of the icons for each layer.
So that when I am looking at all the layers in Layers Tab they are much bigger I can see them . what they contain.
I just can't really see much at the moment the layer icons are so small. Not really a problem but I'd like bigger layer icons.

Is it possible to automate the following: I have a directory of about 50 jpg files. With each file I would like to:
- make the image square, by increasing the canvas size of the least dimension. ie if the width is less than the height, increase the width to the value of the height, or conversely if the height is less than the width
- add a transparency layer
- save to xcf

I have a text layer with width given at its creation. When I later open text editor and enter some wider text, it is wrapped to second line. So I would like to enhance the width of the layer to prevent this. When I add width to the layer using "Layer Boundary Size" menu item, text layer gets converted into standard bitmap layer . I don't understand the logic why a text layer isn't preserved on change of its size .
Is there a way how I can adjust size of text layer without its conversion to a bitmap?

With Gimp 2.8 (Mac) I have made a 3D text with a YouTube tutorial. It looks like the Pulp Fiction logo. [URL]...........
How do I overlay a grungy texture, so the letters look 'older'?I tried making the texture image the top layer in the list on the right and then this: right click -> layer -> transparency -> color to alpha. But then, the 'see-through' texture covers the entire square transparent background! Not just the letters...So, how do I add a transparent texture layer over a shaped image that has a transparent background?

this is my problem:
Pic 1. I have an image I want to use as a background, however the image is not complete. I need a part of pic 2 to fullfill it.
Pic 2. The colors around the object doesn't match the colors of Pic 1.
Normally it would be best to cut the object out. However in this case it wouldn't look nice (the object is mixed out (in color) with the rest of the image). If I cut out something the object won't look "proper".
My question:
How can I blend pic 2 on pic 1, using the original object from pic 2 (as it is), and at the same time blend the colors around it, so that it matches that of pic 1 / or simply remove it somehow?

When you open an image with adjustment layers, what determines what is selected, the background or the adjustment layer? It seems sometimes it's one or the other, and I don't know the logic. Personally I would prefer that the image always opens with the background layer selected.

I was asked to cut out the background from a logo to make it transparent so the logo would look nice on a variety of backgrounds. I've been given a good quality jpeg file.
What I did was I selected (by colour) the background (white), inverted the selection, copied it and pasted as a new image.
It's all fine (the logo itself doesn't have any other elements) but there's still some whiteish/greyish outline around certain elements of the logo.
If I were to do it manually, it'd probably take ages. What would be the best way to accomplish it?

I want to create a template whereby I can make a series of images that I can save as jpgs, upload to my blog, and people can print them. When they print, I want them to be one quarter of a sheet of paper (fit four to a page).
I tried creating a new image using the "inches" specification and those inches seem to have no bearing on inches in real life once printed.
So then I figured that a sheet of paper is 8.5 by 11 and I want a resolution of 300 dpi.
So 8.5 times 300: 2,550 pixels. Times that by 0.25 to get a quarter of it: 637.5 (which gets rounded to 638 pixels).
11 times 300: 3,300 pixels. Times that by 0.25= 825 pixels.
So I put in for 638 pixels by 825 pixels and 300 dpi. I created my image. I saved it as a jpg at full resolution. I uploaded it to my site and tested out the printing.
It took up most of a sheet of paper. Not even close to being a quarter of a sheet.

I've been using 2.6 and created a template for multiple business cards on a standard 8.5 by 11 sheet. [URL]
However the later versions ... 2.8 cause distortions when I try to print. ( Canon MG 2120) The standard 8.5 by 11 mysteriously converts to 7.997 by 10.349 inches .... and a weird 318.870 ppi appears. This obviously distorts my template and the 2 by 3.5 inch cards become odd sizes. When I open the template in 2.6, it works perfectly.
What has happened to the later version? i can't reset to inches and even using the 2559 by 3300 pixils with the 1050x600 card sizecan't be printed accurately So I'm now creating in 2.8 and opening in 2.6 to get my sizes correctly.
I love the expanded tools for drawing in the 2.8 ... but this feature is a nuisance ... along of course with the terrible sizing scale for the brushes. SO hard to calibrate the smaller and moe common sizes. Another bad feature.
Have I missed some adjustment somewhere. Using the same printer, same download gives two different prints sizes in 2.6 and 2.8.

I have a GIF image that I need to add something to, but I don't want to add it to every single individual layer. Is there a way to add it over or behind the entire GIF so that it remains static while the GIF's frames cycle - like a watermark or something?
Or if not, is there maybe a script-fu that copies and merges a selected layer over every other individual layer automatically, without messing them up?
I know I'll probably have to just end up manually adding it to each layer, (so many layers...).

How do I make the edges of the top layer blend in with the bottom layer so you cannot tell that there is a line??? I want to make it look like a heart but I don't know how to smoothen the edges to make it look like it is part of the bottom layer so when I merge the layers there is no goofy lines looking like someone cropped another fire picture out...

I have two similar images where the subject has moved between the images. I have them in the same file as two separate layers and am using the subtract layer mode to identify where they differ, (roughly!).
I want to be able to use the subtract layer as a completely new layer so that I can make edits to it. The only way I have found to do this at the moment is to 'copy visible', but this still brings other elements that I don't want from where the layers overlap.
