GIMP :: Printing Out Greyscale On Photo Paper Is Very Dark (2012)
Sep 23, 2012
I've been printing out a lot of black and white photos on photopaper on a HP Photosmart 7510e.
The printouts are very dark so I've had to boost the brightness levelsin GIMP prior to printing. The problem is that this takes extra timeand I also don't want to save these levels in the XCF file. I would say that (going by the Gamma Display Filter) the printouts are around40% of the brightness they ought to be.

I usually process or edit my images for the internet using 72 dpi and using dimensions that fits my liking. I want to process some photos for printing(i.e the paper used for printing family and social photos; I believe you understand what I mean?). please, what dpi or ppi do I use on gimp? Btw,what do photographers call such a paper?

I am using GIMP 2.6.11 .I am using it to make DVD jackets among other things and have a template made. It's been about a year since I've done a jacket and made no notes - my bad.The Template is 10.597 inches wide X 7.292 inches high for a 7 mm spine jacket.I have it set in the Image - Print Size as well The big problem I have is trying to set the page setup setting from the File menu - It is stuck at Portrait, A4, Front tray and will not change - it resets every time. It refuses to switch to landscape or US 8.5 x 11.
The Print menu from the File menu only has 2 tabs - nothing like what is shown on the on-line manual. Only A General and Image Setting Tab.The image Setting Tab is useless as nothing I change seems to matter. the maximum size I can enter is H= 5.670" and H= 8.240" I have read section 1.6.2 Printing Photos and all the related links without finding out a thing. And nothing seems relivent. All I would like to do is make a graphic and print it out at an exact (or very close) size. I didnt think it would be so difficult.

I have some large images that I would like to print at full size, which will involve tiling across multiple sheets of paper. I can't seem to find a way to setup tiling at the Print dialog or through Gutenprint.

I convert a color jpg to Greyscale in Photoshop CS2 and it looks great on the monitor. Yet when I print it I get a lot of green tinting. I am using Windows XP service pack 2 and an Epson Photo Stylus 260 printer.

When I print 11 x 17 paper on Epson R2880 in LR the image begins printing before the leading edge of the paper reaches the printerhead (not prininting borderless.) Only happens in LR and not PS. I am using the LR paper standards for borders.Â

I'm trying to print colour to my epsom inkjet but for some reason Illustrator keeps converting my colour image to greyscale.
Â
Now I've been using Illustrator for years and this is a new problem I've not come across before. Is there something I can do to stop it doing it - maybe there's a setting that has accidentally switched on that converts all to greyscale.
Â
If not then I suppose I'll have to revert to "turning it on and off again"!

I have heard you can protect your photographs on the web by applying a transparent overlay to them. When someone then right clicks and saves the image, all they get is the transparent foreground and not the photo underneath. I have tried to do this using GIMP. However, the web guidance I have seen says you also have to edit the HTML code to do this. Is there a way of doing this from GIMP itself without involving HTML code?

Whenever I use this to convert a colour image (or even a black and white one) to greyscale, the image takes a leap in brightness (gamma?), despite the Preview showing otherwise. I've used the default (set at 15% dot gain), even taken the sliders down to -200%, it makes no difference. How do I maintain the brightness when converting?

All other controls work fine until i use the grey scale tool. All other options/controls become inactive including close and minimize. I have to use ctrl+alt+delete to exit.
The main reason I use grey scale is to be able to use the arbitrary rotation tool. Is there away to use arbitrary without using grey scale?

When you want to use skew on grayscale element you should be prepared for blue edges.
How blue can be similar to gray?

I am having trouble colorizing a greyscale image. I actually did manage to do it earlier but can't remember how I did it. See attached the greyscale original image and the colorized pink image that I had created earlier. I tried inverting and colorizing but I can't seem to find the right setting. I also tried to create a pink layer and change the blend mode to color.

I have designed a cd cover that needs to go off to print on Monday. Everything looks fine on screen in Illustrator cs5 and when i print from illustrator it looks fine. When i save it to pdf it still looks fine on screen but when i print it the colours are so dark the images are unrecognisable. The company im printing to want the pdf preset as Press Quality, it looks awful but i have tried all the presets and they all look as bad. Everything is in CYMK. I really cant understand what is going on! I have two deskjet printers and they both look terrible (one slightly worse though).Â

I am having trouble getting good prints when printing out of CS5. I have taken all of the calibration and profiling steps and my prints are coming out very dark and muddy.Â
I am printing on an Epson Pro 7800 and I am a Mac user (OS X 10.6.8). I contacted Epson and they suggested printing out of Preview and the images looked far better which, they suggested, points to something in Photoshop that is causing the problem.Â

System: Vista x64 Monitor calibration: Eye One Display and basICColor Display software - profiled to basICColor's PrePress setting. Luminance is 130. Paper: Hahnemuhle 'Photo Rag Pearl' (with Hahnemuhle's profile) and Permajet 'Oyster' (with Permajet Profile) Settings in Print Dialog are: Photoshop Manages Colours, Paper profile selected, Perceptual Rendering Intent, Best Photo, ICM, Colour Management OFF (no colour management), Paper Type selected. Image is perfect in Photoshop window and perfect in Print Preview, but prints about a stop under and with a cast. What can I do to get prints that come close to what I'm seeing? Right now I can only get them if I brighten them such that, in ACR, the file would be way overexposed. This is very odd. CS3 was much better. Any ideas? Can I create a profile for my CS4/Vista x64/R2400/Paper Choice combination that will get me what I'm seeing on the screen?

I was asked to take some photos (Canon 1D MK2, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM) in a very dark church, and I had no flash (iso 1250). I shot them in RAW, and I converted them with CaptureOne. Histogram was really on the left. I did what I could leaving them a bit dark becouse in the parts that were really dark I didn't have any detail, and in some other parts a lot of noise. How do you behave in such situations? Which is the best way to fight noise? Does somebody of you have -by any chance- any tip-trik?

How do I convert the colour profile of a Lightroom custom printing package from Adobe Prophoto to sRGB before printing? For that matter, how do I save the thing? I have no interest in saving the template, or the collection separately, since neither has any use without the other. And without saving them as one finished item, I have no way to convert the colour profile of that item. I can see clearly from the appearance of the print preview that the above mentioned colour profile conversion is required.

CS3, Vista OS, Nikon NEF file After making image adjustment in Camera Raw the image is very dark when opened in CS3. Can correct by adjusting gamma in exposure or blending a new duplicate layer using screen.
Is there any way to avoid the extra steps or am I doing something wrong?

DSCF2016-By the light of the moon.jpg
This shot was actually taken in the middle of the afternoon. It's about two stops under exposed and taken on a dark drizzly day. Minimal retouching to bring out the trees on the far side of the lake.
PS: I never cease to be surprised by how much information there is in what appears to be a black blank area. At the other end, I have never found anything in saturated areas. I guess that's the nature of the light sensitive diodes in the CCD.

We need to print a drawing on an A2 paper roll but the drawing is cut off at the length of an A1 or A2 page. How do you set it up so the full length of the roll can be used?
At the moment the roll cuts off at 841mm in length when set to A1. How do you configure it to use more length of the roll so it doesn't cut off the drawing?

Illy and Photoshop, both of which are making me pull my hair out (much respect for graphic designers). I designed a simple letterhead with a horizontal bar that is supposed to go to the edge of letter size paper but when it actually prints, the bar doesn't extend to the edges. I have a bleed of .125 (1/8") set up so that I can extend this horizontal bar past the document edges so that when it prints, there are no funny edges. I'm printing at home on a non-commercial printer, an HP Color Laser Jet 5500 PCL 6. I've also made sure that the document is not scaled or "fit to page" before printing. And both printing directly from Illustrator and saving as PDF and printing produce the same result. Such a simple thing is driving me nuts.

When printing on Epson printers (4800,4880,4900) in the Photoshop print settings dialogue box it won't allow me to print at a custom paper size using the sheet or manual feed settings. The paper feed option defaults to Roll Paper when I create the custom paper size, and then when I change it and try and save the settings it just reverts back to roll paper.
If I try and send a print after this then the printer won't accept it because it's being told to print on a roll instead of sheet. Why is this?? I'm using CS6 and OS 10.7 and I've never experienced this problem with any previous Photoshop/ Mac OS X before.
