GIMP :: Photoshop Multilayer Image - CMYK To RGB
Jul 14, 2013
I had a sudden loss of Photoshop and need to work on a large multi-layered psd. (Had I known in advance I would have reduced the size & layer amount.) Gimp won't open it because it's CMYK.
Tried several conversion techniques to RGB, none worked well. How can I open this file and maintain the layers? Also, there seem to be several different kinds of RGB, what are the differences?

Did someone already know about 16 bits/channel multilayer psd file parsing is different to that of 8 bits/channel multilayer psd file?
as far as I try, it seems 8 bits/channel model, image data is saved in RLE model, but it is quite different in 16 bits/channel,
we could easily find out once we load those two file into memory (with same context, only model changed).
Anyone who know which algorithm may 16 bits/channel multilayer psd taken for saving the layer image data?

I been searching around but other than going to the smart sound website and buying their software I do not know of any other sound software which allows me to create multilayer music for video studio. Additionally it does not appear that their software contains a plugin for Corel videostudio. So what are my options concerning creating custom music for videostudio?

My CreateSpace pdf in both the Proofer online and the hard copy I just received have great color variance from what I submitted in my pdf cover and interior files. The vibrancy's gone. The bright spring green is dull. The light bluegreens more like gray.
SO, next to learn: I need to know the easiest way to convert my RGB to CMYK files, so I can replace what I've got in my CreateSpace book project interior and exterior spots. I would like to do this in the pdf state, from RGB pdf to CMYK pdf. I am happy to do page by page. The 44-page book has text, plus color images (from original watercolor paintings), with some black ink drawings as well. I work on a MacBook 10.6.8. I assembled the pdfs (page by page as "images") in GIMP 2.8. The original text I formatted in iStudio, easily uploading into GIMP, as images, then working each image in layers. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that flattened images can't be unflattened, so if I need to go back to a pre-pdf pages ('images' in GIMP lingo), I'll have to do quite a bit of reconstructing. The last layered building steps are now bound within the flattened images in 44-page pdf. Fortunately, I can easily alter one page at a time within my full pdf. I want to find an RGB to CMYK conversion that I can do page by page, popping out and back into my full pdf.

It is my understanding that GIMP doesn't work with that standard, however when I convert something from sRGB into CMYK in another program and save it as a tiff file it appears that I am still able to open that file in GIMP, which then displays it as an sRGB.
Does GIMP 2.8 actually do that or am I not performing the CMYK conversion right?

It's not greyed out, it's missing. Using PS CS3, on Windows XP SP2 and working now in RGB for design, but need to convert to CMYK for printing.
I've done this a million times and this is the 1st time CMYK has been missing.

I am saving my images (assembled in GIMP), exporting as jpgs then converting to pdf pages. My end product needs to be one pdf, so I will be inserting these separate pages into one 44-page pdf.
I need to retain the 300 resolution (actually, somewhere the resolution has slipped to 299.98 which I'm hoping will be so near it'll look fine). (using MacBook OS 10.6.8 with the GIMP 2.8 version)I think for the ebook, the RGB of my GIMP images will be best. So, I've got that, or will have as soon as I do all the export/saving.
(as an alternative, for the paper printed version which will precede the ebook), how do I save the RGB images to CMYK which I understand will print more true to what I'm seeing on my actual paintings > images in GIMP on my computer screen (the two of which look the same at present)? And at what point in these steps is it best to do the new CMYK version?

We would like to experiment mixing a spot colour in a normal CMYK image in order to expand the colour palette. Our problem is the fact that we cannot get Photoshop to show us the actual image once we have added the spot colour.
The spot channel shows as if it is being printed on top of the CMYK colours instead of being mixed with them. This makes it very difficult to judge what adjustments have to be made to the image. Of course, saving the file as a DCS2 and placing it in InDesign shows us what we want, but this is too much jumping back and forth between programmes to be efficient. We are runnnig CS3 on Windows XP Professional.

I made an image using CMYK (for printing later on), and the color is fine when I try to print it onto printing paper by just selecting the Print button on PS. However, when I saved the image as a .JPEG, the color changes drastically.

done a modestly complex flyer layout which, by now, should be printed by a professional service. Unfortunately, those would like to have a CMYK PDF image, including an additional layer for a "highlight" color (which should be gold or silver, not sure yet). I've done a bit playing and, so far, am unsure about whether (and/or how) such a kind of pre-print color separation can be done using GIMP, or whether I would have to do this in another way. how to get my xcf stored in a way feasible for this kind of printing?

When converting the colour of a Jpeg to CMYK in Photoshop CS5 the file size is increasing.
The original image is 352KB and after saving as CMYK it is 2.1MB
Why is this happening and how can I stop it?
I'm using a lot of images for a print project so need to keep file sizes small with resolution of 300dpi. The image dimensions are really small, only about 30mm high so they shouldn't be this large a file size
I am using a clipping path but this doesn't seem to be effecting file size (I checked by saving it as RGB with a clipping path which stayed small, and by saving one without a clipping path in CMYK which was huge)

I'm using Photoshop CS6. I have a CMYK image of fruit on a white background with a drop shadow that has some cyan, magenta and yellow. The drop shadow is NOT AN EFFECT. It is part of the original photographed image shot against a white background.
I want to turn the drop shadow into a percentage of black only. I have masked the foot so I have the white background and shadow isolated but now I'm not sure the best way to make the shadow a percentage of black only.

About once a year I ask about a capability to output a file fromGimp in pdf format and the CMYK color model. In addition it would benice if this output was in the PDF X/1-a:2001 format, to satisfycertain fussy printers. I know there are external converters likeImageMagick. It would however be nice if after all these years Gimpcatered to the needs of the printing industry.

I made a simple poster using photoshop to make the background and illustrator to make the fonts and some other stuff. In CMYK my black is just 100% K ( in photoshop)
When placing image in illustrator the 100% K (black) changes to different black with C M Y added. But then when I save it as PDF the preview shows black as a bit grey (which is something normal- in print it will be just black). So my question is .. should I change enything just to be able to see a 100% K in illustrator in order to match CMYK values of Photoshop? Or should I leave it this way? I guess if I am getting a "grey" in PDF preview is something good isn'it? because in photoshop when I set to 100%K in my screeen it looks like grey and not total black.
