I am using Gimp version 2.6..At the start-up it has the "Paintbrush Tool." I want it to have the "Move Tool" immediately after or when the program starts.
Having the Paintbrush Tool at start-up is inconvenient because if I click on the image it paints where I click. Then I have then got to undo the paint.How can I set GIMP so that the Move Tool is the default mode when it starts?
Is there a way I can set this with a switch appended to the "...gimp.exe" shortcut? Or any way that I can set it at all?

I love single window mode in the new 2.7 series. I currently have my preferences such that the main tool palette is locked to the upper-left side of the single window.
However, I can't move it. How to replicate this on a new install (since by default the tool palette is on the upper-right and can't be moved).
I'm guessing I missed a setting / preference somewhere. How do I move the main tool palette?

View 2 Replies View Relatedis it possible to make the 'keep aspect' option in the scale tool checked by default? it is unchecked every time Gimp starts up and I tend to make the mistake and oddly scale a floating layer because the aspect isn't staying the same. is there any way to make the 'keep aspect' option on by default so when I start up Gimp I don't have to constantly scale it wrong or having to always need to lock the proportions?

Also, if I have layers inside a folder and try to move one of those layers, the entire folder is selected and all layers within that folder move.
I have not grouped any layers together.

I am using the trial version of CS5 (probably going to upgrade at the end of the trial), and I've only found one thing about it that I don't like more than CS3. This is VERY VERY annoying, and I'm not sure if it's a glitch, or just a preference that needs to be reset:
When using the move tool, I will move something and it will just snap back to where it originally was. When it snaps back, it might move a few pixels over in the direction I was dragging, but it is definitely not moving to where I want it to go. The only way to get things to move the way I want to is by Free Transform...but it's annoying, when you're trying to design a layout, to have to free transform every element you want to move, first.
I'm guessing that this is a glitch because sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't...it's pretty random. I've tried turning Snap on and off, and nothing changes.
I have a situation where the default behavior of my rectangle tool (or any of the other shape tools) is now different. I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.5 running Illustrator CS5. It acts as though the option-shift keys are pressed, so whenever I draw an object, it draws from the center point and the dimensions are constrained, so i can only draw a square or circle, not a rectangle or ellipse. Additionally, whenever I use the selection tool, it clones the object I drag, and also constrains the positioning, so i can only drag in a 0, 45 or 90 degree angle (or multiples thereof). It's as if my option-shift keys are permanently pressed (if I actually press option-shift, the behavior persists). I tried using a different (brand new) keyboard, tried throwing away preferences, and the problem remains. I also tried booting up Illustrator CS4, and the weird problem showed up there! This behavior just started happening spontaneously. I couldn't think of anything weird that happened (a crash, a new plug-in, etc.). I can't find a preference that sets this behavior either.

I want to modify my default start up drawing. ie. Change my units, grid off, text and dimscale, zoom out, etc.
I have no problem doing all that but don't know how or where to save it so it becomes my default start up drawing.
I'm a FCP person who has gone to premier cc because I dont like the new ver of FCP which seems to be imovie on steriods. How do you move the timeline cursor from the end of one clip to start of the next. In FCP ver 7 it's a simple button.

For some reason, now when I click on Constrained Orbit or Free Orbit the screen automatically starts to move, its like I have just pressed on Continuous Orbit. Free Orbit works OK if I hold shift and use the scroll button, but I am used to using the icon .

If I presses and hold the Alt key I see the cursor change from the current tool to the eyedropper tool. If I press and hold both the Ctrl+Alt keys a see a cursor icon change to an icon that has two up pointing Arrow heads one Black the other White. What tool is that cursor for? View 11 Replies View RelatedI started learning Photoshop CS4 about a month ago. One of the first things I learned was to add text. Simple, fun. I am now trying to learn about layer masks. One of the exercises in one of my books is to open an image and then add text to it. (The idea is to then add a mask and 'hide' portions of the text behind portions of the image.) A really strange thing is happening when I try to add text. I highlight the image in the layers column. (Prior to adding any mask layers.) I then click the text tool. But when I click on the image (in the area where I want the text), the text tool 'becomes' a move tool. A text layer pops up and the words I'm trying to type on the image come out in the title area for the layer (in the layers column). I've tried everything I can think of to 'get' the text on the image but can't solve it.

So far, I've done this:
Synaptic>completely remove gimp and gimp-data
deleted gimp2.6 folder from /home/user/
reinstall
Sudo apt-get remove --purge gimp gimp-data
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get install gimp gimp-data
After the second install, looked for gimp folder in user directory to double check file and folder permissions...it wasn't there.
I have Gimp portable 2.6 and have used it a lot on Windows XP. Now I have a box with Windows 7 on it and, well, it failes to start.
It come up with "gimp2-6.exe has stopped working" and gives me the option to debug. I go the the "Visual Studio Just-In-time debugger' and the message is "An unhandled win32 exception occurred in gimp-2-6.exe [448]" but am stuck there.
What can I do to make gimp portable work on Windows 7
I was moving my Layer box lower, and suddenly it went under the bar where it shows your windows! I don't know how to move it again!
View 1 Replies View RelatedAs stated in the thread, my Gimp program had just started to stop loading today, after it was working fine earlier this afternoon. I either select the program itself or an xcf file, and it starts to load with the green bar and everything. At about 3/4 into loading, right when it gets to "Tool Presets", windows informs me the program has stopped working and says it will notify me if it finds a solution.
I run the program on Windows 8.
I can't find out how to set the start folder for 2.8.In 2.6, I could edit the shortcut properties to change the directory that Gimp starts in.
When I want to load or save images, I'm in the directory I want to be in. I then have the option of pressing 'recently used' if I want.
In 2.8 I can still edit the shortcut properties, but when I go to open a file, I'm already in the 'recently used' directory. Unfortunately, that's not where I usually want to be, and I can't find a way to get the old behaviour back.
It's as simple as that. How do I change the anchor point from which I'm drawing. I'm using the pen tool on Illustrator CS6 on a tablet.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did a complete uninstall of GIMP 2.6. Then a complete install of GIMP 2.8. No errors during installation. When I run GIMP, Windows draws a window frame with the title "GIMP Startup" but the inside of the window remains unpainted (whatever was behind it remains visible). This window frame exists for maybe one second and then closes. I have waited a long time but nothing continues. Task Manager confirms that no application is running. I uninstalled, downloaded again, reinstalled (even just a "compact" installation), but same thing.
System Info:
Windows XP Home SP3, up to date
2 GB RAM
Paging file initial 3058 MB, max 6116 MB
Goes straight to a black box that says not responding then gets to looking for data files and then windows takes over and searches for a solution before shutting the whole works down. Takes about 30 secs.
I just installed this because 2.6 was doing the same thing.
