GIMP :: How To Reduce Bright Patches In Photos
Feb 29, 2012
I've been playing with gimp a lot to edit my photos and how to reduce bright patches in photos that have bright spot that kinda take over the photo. I am using Gimp and cannot retake the photo.
Here is what I did.
1. I outlined my body and took away 100% of the blue, this makes the black look cleaner in my opinion.
2. I then inverted the outline and reduced the blue for the rest of the photo by 50% giving the white a cleaner look.
3. Then I outlined the bright area of snow below my feet and lowered the brightness.
4. I highlighted the sky from the mountain base up and increased the blue by 100% twice.
Here are the before and after pictures.

I have limited knowledge of HDR pro, however I have used it without these extra patches of colour appearing and when I tried to recreate an image which had been succesful these patches of colour are appearing.I suspect I have changed something but I can not work out what.

When useing my old favorite graphic software MS Picture-It i often need to apply overall or border transparencies to many patches. Since im enjoying the pleasures of GIMPs select definitions which absolutely cause no distortions im often thinking - this be the only missing thing. Am i correct or do such functions like previewable halfways restoring of the previous look plus border fading indeed already exist in the new GIMP?

When I go to import and look at my photos (previously edited in PSE9 and saved as a jpg on an external hard drive) they look great. But when I import them some of the photos look weird - too bright usually or the colour has gone all funny. I've deleted them out of LR and then tried importing them but it happens again. Only on a certain few. They are jpgs.
Â
What is happening? In finder on the mac they look normal too. under Import on LR4 they look normal. It's just once they are imported.

I run an online store and each product has a pic.
I have taken a picture of my new product which shows basically the floor as a background- put the product on the floor then took a pic.
I need to take the product pic and put it onto a bright white background-that's it.

Not sure if GIMP can actual do this.
I am looking to create text words that have a silver/bright mirror effect. The effect might look like silver liquid (water) effect. Or do you know what software it could be designed on.

I would like to e-mail about 50 photos to someone. I can reduce the size of the photos in "Export," but even if I compress them into an archive file, the file is too big to send. I tried compressing just 10 photos at a time... the archive file is still too large to e-mail. Is there another way to e-mail large groups of photos from Lightroom? I have Lightroom 3.

Is there an ability to archive photos from Lightroom 5 to reduce the size of your catalog? For example, if I have a wedding I shot where I have several hundred photos but I've delivered the final pictures to my client, should I/can I archive these photos out of Lightroom as I'll probably never look at them again but don't want to delete them just in case.Â

I have a Windows 7 computer and use Photoshop Elements 9 and Premiere Elements 9. I recently completed a slideshow that contains about 360 photos, many or all of which exceed the maximum size of 1000 x 750 pixels. Is there any way that I can easily reduce the pixel size of each of the photos? If upgrading to the most recent versions of Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements would accomplish this I would be willing to do this.Â

At work I use Photoshop, but at home I have started using GIMP. One problem I constantly have is the size of pngs. How do you reduce the size of pngs?
I have 400KB png, when I save the same image at home in GIMP as jpg it becomes smaller, but if I save it as png it becomes about 2MB - this is huge compared to photoshop
If I use the save for web plugin, the results are the same for jpgs, but if I save as 24bit png the image suddenly becomes 2.5MB. Why are PNGs in GIMP so large?
PS: I use windows vista, in case this matters.

I want to design a t-shirt and my aim is to reduce a photograph to a two-colour image, more like a symbol, with bold lines and few details. A little bit like this one, taking this one into GIMP. I have been using the software quite a while for private photos, but I have never attempted something like this...
So far I have managed to remove all content except for "the edges" of the car, but I am a bit lost how I can make those edges smooth, because now I can see that the masks I used were not "straight". how to progress making a symbol out of a photo?

Well, what I am asking is: How to progress making a symbol out of a photo, from scratch?

I found a way to save a sub 1mb XCF file with a select saved as a channel and a layer of the image as a threshold. I can open the original jpg in gimp, select all, copy into new transparent layer in the tiny XCF file, do channel to selection, delete the threshold layer and I'm good to go. I went from a 27 mb xcf to a 0.5 mb xcf with the channel and layer for a 2 mb jpg.
At my low skill level the selects are usually the only XCF elements worth keeping. Everytime I've returned to a saved XCF weeks later because I knew more, I tossed it out and started over from the original jpg unless a select was involved. I could buy a larger HD, but I'm literally living out of 2 suitcases and expect to continue so indefinably. Keeping my pile of stuff small is a prime priority. Store them online? The only internet ISPs available here are rather slow.

I have 60-something 24 bit PNG images that I've edited in Gimp, many of them include transparency. I want to batch convert them to 256 colors while keeping the transparency. Can this be done? I did try it in another editor and any attempt to keep the alpha channel transparency resulted in totally washed out colors and transparency where none should exist. Conversely, if I skipped the transparency the color depth reduction went well.

I'm completing an ad for a bakery and the image of a cupcake that I'm trying to use wasn't done in a whitebox, hence alot of glare on the lefthand part of the image. It's washed out the pink frosting into an almost white color and the strawberries are not saturated in color. Is there something I can do to get rid of the white spot and make the image look as if it was shot professionally in a white box?
(in the image, it's the front most chocolate cupcake)

GIMP is in single window mode. The bottom of the window extends down below my screen window, below my taskbar, so I can't grab it with my mouse to pull it up and make the window smaller vertically. I have pulled the top blue bar up as far as it will go, but not far enough - How do I shrink the GIMP window vertically?

How can I reduce the size of the Pencil tool to as little as 1 or 2 pixels? I want to draw fairly fine shadows, and have figured out that creating shadows requires smudging or blurring gradients of black-to-grey, but the default options in the Brushes toolbox are far, far too large.

I'm using gimp 2.6 on ubuntu. i have some pictures i would like to enhance.
There's that image image 1
and i would like to make it look like image 2
As you can see the second image uses only about 7 or 8 different colors and the outer lines are nice and smooth not stuttering.
Is there a way how i can change the first image to something like the second one, maybe something like replace 10 different colors which are similar to each other with only 1?
I tried and played with the options (bucketfill, posterise, or the cartoon option from artistic menu, increase contrast, brightness etc...
Is there an option to smoth the outer lines etc? i just want the dog, the rest of the background is not so important.

Only recently discovered this Forum and the existence of three patches which I have downloaded. However, all three refuse to install giving me the message:
"The installed version of the application could not be determined. The setup will now terminate".
The original DVD is in the drive and the Volinfo. text is definitely on it.
