GIMP :: How To Reduce Size Of Pencil Tool To 1 / 2 Pixels
Oct 20, 2013
How can I reduce the size of the Pencil tool to as little as 1 or 2 pixels? I want to draw fairly fine shadows, and have figured out that creating shadows requires smudging or blurring gradients of black-to-grey, but the default options in the Brushes toolbox are far, far too large.

2 days on GIMP. I need to adjust the clone tool so it's 1080 pixels vertical and about 20 pixels wide. I googled and searched, but I can't seem to find the right phrasing.

Basically, I opened 2.8 this morning and started working on something, but for some reason everything I do can be undone with ctrl+z except for the pencil tool. It doesn't even feature in the undo history, so I have to just use the eraser tool instead. Is this a bug, or is there some setting I need to play with? Because I LIKE the pencil tool :/ and I don't want to have to stop using it.

The pencil tool normally doesn't do antialiasing. However, when I stroke along a path with the pencil tool, the result is antialiased anyway. How can I fix this?

At work I use Photoshop, but at home I have started using GIMP. One problem I constantly have is the size of pngs. How do you reduce the size of pngs?
I have 400KB png, when I save the same image at home in GIMP as jpg it becomes smaller, but if I save it as png it becomes about 2MB - this is huge compared to photoshop
If I use the save for web plugin, the results are the same for jpgs, but if I save as 24bit png the image suddenly becomes 2.5MB. Why are PNGs in GIMP so large?
PS: I use windows vista, in case this matters.

I found a way to save a sub 1mb XCF file with a select saved as a channel and a layer of the image as a threshold. I can open the original jpg in gimp, select all, copy into new transparent layer in the tiny XCF file, do channel to selection, delete the threshold layer and I'm good to go. I went from a 27 mb xcf to a 0.5 mb xcf with the channel and layer for a 2 mb jpg.
At my low skill level the selects are usually the only XCF elements worth keeping. Everytime I've returned to a saved XCF weeks later because I knew more, I tossed it out and started over from the original jpg unless a select was involved. I could buy a larger HD, but I'm literally living out of 2 suitcases and expect to continue so indefinably. Keeping my pile of stuff small is a prime priority. Store them online? The only internet ISPs available here are rather slow.

GIMP is in single window mode. The bottom of the window extends down below my screen window, below my taskbar, so I can't grab it with my mouse to pull it up and make the window smaller vertically. I have pulled the top blue bar up as far as it will go, but not far enough - How do I shrink the GIMP window vertically?

How do you see the size of a selection (in pixels?). In Photoshop this would be in the info dialogue window. I'm not finding the equivalent in GIMP (2.6).

I was using Paint.net but I've found it too limited. The GIMP has much more power and I can do a lot more with it, but I've found a few things I can't figure out how to do.
For example, when I use the Eyedropper tool () to choose a color, GIMP doesn't seem to include any transparency in the selection:
The Colorpicker just chooses the color at 100% opacity. Is there any way to change this so that my new foreground color includes the transparency level?

I need to have a pic finish at (width-3072 and height- 2048 pixels). When I click on file>new I put in those dimensions, but when I am done with pic and I export it, the picture shrinks to very small. The only way around this is to maximize the image in Gimp to 100% and use my snipping tool to outline the image, then "save as". This will save it large, but not the size I need.
My brothers and I took some pics and I added a couple things in one of mine, to try to fake them out. If the size of THAT image is way different than the rest, the fake out will not work. I normally use Faststone to re-size my images but it will not re-size my Gimp images.

I've been using GIMP to make GIFS for a long time now, but recently the "optimize for difference" option I've used is having the reverse effect it should have- ie, it's making the file larger. Here's an example. It's the exact same image, same dimensions, same amount of colors. The first one is unoptimized, each frame is a full picture, and it's file size it ~149kb. The second one is the same as the first, except optimized with about ~50% of the pixels removed from each frame (except the first frame obviously), and yet it's file size is ~155kb. I can not for the life of me figure out why an image with most of it's pixels removed is creating a larger file size. [URL]...

Is there a way to make it so when you're drawing a line you can see how it actually will look like?
On paint it shows exactly how the line looks as ur drawing it,
but on Photoshop it shows some rectangle outline of the line.

Working in PS CS6. I want to use the pencil tool at 1px, and I've changed my settings accordingly (even typed it in to be sure) but the minumum size it will actually go is 3px.
To be clear, the size is set to 1px, but when you zoom all the way in so that the individual pixels are visible, the pencil is a 3px x 3px square and will not go smaller.
The brush tool does not behave this way, and I would use it instead but for this project I need the square precision of the pencil. I'm working in a 72dpi RGB document. I do not have this issue in CS5.

I am painting various pixels with transparency, and I don't like that pixels previously painted become more opaque when I paint over them. I would like the opacity information to remain the same, regardless of how often I paint over an already-painted pixel.
For example, suppose I paint the color (100,100,100) on a pixel with 60% opacity. If I paint over this pixel again, it should still have 60% opacity. I don't want it "stacking".
Also, just as an off topic question, is there any reason why so many people use photoshop over paint shop? I see them both as very identical and I'm having difficulty finding differences. Paint Shop Pro X is very nice, I think CS2 and PSPX are all the same.

attempting to use Classroom in a Book - page 170, pencil tool "an X will appear next to pencil tool"....not so..
at one point, i DID see the "X" but can't reproduce it now that i backed up and started over. I get an asterisk, then, when drawing a line, and adding to it, the first line disappears as soon as the second line is drawn.

1) I have a pattern that I'd like to use with the pencil tool. Is there a way to do this?
I mean something similar to painting with patterns - that is, with the paint tool, you can select "Pattern" from the Fill drop-down menu, select a pattern from the Pattern drop-down menu, and then paint that pattern into your image. Supposing you set the Brush for the pencil to be big enough, how could you do this with the pencil tool?
2) Is there a way to make a selection and paint the whole region selected with one click? That is, even if the colors and shapes are heterogenous and contrasting sharply such that the paint tool would never paint beyond the bounds of any shapes or colors.

Exactly what the title says, how do I change the Pencil tool to a desired pixel size? I've been using Paint.net for a while and I haven't noticed that the Pencil tool is fixed at 1 pixel.
Also, is there a way to dock the floating panel (Colors, Tools), maybe put them below the Menu bar and accessible via dropdown button?

I am drawing with a bamboo tablet a road on a map and the edges of my stroke look bumpy, i.e. not smooth, using the pencil tool.
I have the hardness set to 0. If I hold the shift key and draw parts of the road that are straight I get a nice smooth edge but when I add in the curves I must have terrible shaky hand cos its so bumpy. Is there a smooth tool or something similar?
