When you're working on an image in GIMP, typically there's a bunch of selection and path spam all over the canvas, and checkered patterns for transparency, and all that stuff.
Is there a way to easily see what your image will look like when exported, without exporting it every single time you want to see what the image will look like?
I've looked through the documentation, and searched the forum, and haven't found a clue as to why this is happening. On my Mac Mini, when I use the "Open..." dialogue, I get a list of files. Clicking on one should bring up a preview, as it does on my Windows 7 machine, but on the Mac the preview stays blank. Even if I try to force a preview update. This is with GIMP 2.8.8.
I never had a preview in my old Photoshop--but it'd be nice to get this to work.
I was just choosing a JPG to open in the gimp Open Image dialog andwhen I clicked on the image to open, I think the preview thumbnail wasof the same image in an uncropped and unprocessed form. Does gimp usesome type of embedded thumbnail as a preview image?

I encountered an interesting problem yesterday while trying to export an image as a jpg. I've outlined what I did.
I had a jpg file of dimensions 150wide X 100 high. Lets call this small.jpg . I had another jpg image that was much larger. Let's call this large.jpg . I wanted to change the size of large.jpg to have the same dimensions as small.jpg.
For convenience, I pasted the large.jpg onto small.jpg and then used the resize tool. When I clicked on export I got the following error-
Saving `large_to_small.jpg` failed
JPEG image plug-in could not save image. I could have sworn that I've done this before and it worked. So I wasted a lot of time trying to `fix` GIMP.
Solutions
1. Don't paste onto a pre-existing image. Create the canvas size you require then paste the image then resize and export.
2. If you do happen to paste an image onto another for resizing. Close all the files except the current one you are working with. Now choose select all and copy then go to file >>create>> from clipboard. The new image should be of the same dimensions. Export.
One thing I should mention, even though there was an error, the image large_to_small.jpg was created (file size 0 bytes). As you would expect, the jpg file couldn't be opened in GIMP.
making my desktop icons. I stated out with either a jpg or png image. Using gimpshop I get the image resized and it looks fine. However, after exporting as an ico the image is very recognizable but shorter and fatter. I use to use photoshop so with gimpshop I look for something that said retain aspect ratio but as of now I haven't found it. It seems to adjust both width and height when I scale it but something happens during the export.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI cannot save or export an image from GIMP 2.8 at all. No matter where the mouse pointer is on the save/export window only a caret is displayed and not a cursor. The exception to this is when I hover over the vertical slider in the directory pane and I am able to move the slider on left click and drag. When I was using 2.8.2 (see below) and attempted this operation the cursor changed to an icon resembling a text document. The icon does not appear in 2.8.6
The problem has only occurred in the last 10 days. It first happened to me about a week ago. At that time I was using GIMP 2.8.2. Today I uninstalled this version and installed 2.8.6 with no improvement. I also tried deleting the .GIMP2.8 directory (as recommended elsewhere in this forum) with both versions but to no avail. As implied I have used GIMP (for more than 18 months) without a problem until the last week and a bit.
I am using Windows 7 Professional 64bit.
I have a Tiff image ( size : 5.3 mb). Wanted to export into jpg with a lower resolution. I waited for the process 35 mins and then had to cancel it. and when i checked the preference inside GIMP it looked like the attached image file.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my laptops to Fedora 17 and Linux Mint 13, which now come with Gimp 2.8. After discovering that Save and Save as are moved to Export to and Export, I tried saving the default export settings for JPG. I usually set the Quality to 80 and make some other adjustments. However, the defaults always revert back no matter how many times I press the Save Defaults button.
Also, is there any way to make Gimp always use the previously selected settings? It seems that even though I set the defaults, with some images I open, edit and attempt to export, it tries to adjust the quality settings again. I just want to always have the defaults I have set for exporting jpg files without having to click an extra button or keyboard shortcut every time I save a file.
Recently I have shifted to Gimp 2.8. I also use picasa to createdescription and upload purpose. Image descriptions created by picasa isgetting lost if I export (after edits) in gimp. Gimp is replacing existingdescription with "x-default".

I am having an issue with Gimp after taking a heart shaped transparent bg image and filling the transparent parts with a flame pattern, and adding new image objects as layers, every time I flatten the image or export the image to jpg, there is a noticeable white border around the heart! I really love Smart Previews and it speeded my workflow very much, but it happend some time that I exported my data without having my external harddrive connected, just working with Smart Previews. So the only "warning" was that it's much faster than usual if you export your files :-) It would be great to have kind of a dialog, if' you're really sure to export just from Smart Previews!
View 6 Replies View RelatedLR4 4.2 with ACR 7.2Mac OSX 10.8.2Nikon D600 NEF (Raw) files This problem has occured everytime I use LR4 and I've tried exporting to different colour space - sRGB, AdobeRGB with the same result. This is using my new Nikon D600, when I export a photo processed in LR4 and shot from my old Canon 400D the colours are almost identical when viewed in Preview with just the usual loss you would expect converting to sRGB.
I hope this is an issue that is being worked on for the update that will fully support the D600.
i have like 20 frames and the delay between the frames is 0,01 sec's, its perfect in the preview, but when im exporting it, its really slow. i've even deleted like the half of the frames and its still very slow, im using Photoshop CS4 and the file is like 500KB and there are like 43-50 colors, its also slow when i upload it on tumblr or something.

I always save my layered files in a folder called Layered files in the project. I also save flattened 8 bit Tif's at full resolution for my client as a print file in a separate folder along with another folder for web and device optimized files. When my client opens some of my flattened files they tell me the only see one layer. When I open some of them in Preview I get the same result. I only see the last layer I put into my layered file. But when I open the same photo in Bridge I see the full flattened file as I saved it. What can I do about that?

I've produced drawings, basic they may be, but when preview them the actual drawing area is barely noticable & when export to pdf it practically prints a blank page. I have very simple items in drawing, stockpiles, excavations test locations, and have been producing pdf's fine, even as recently as this morning using the same cadfile. I have a reasonable sized preview, I can go in and look at the image, the only difference is I can't zoom in to 1:1. I want to export the preview image from lightroom, its still better than losing the whole image.
Is there anyway to do that? the usual export throws a missing file alert.
When I open a folder of images from my camera all I see in the preview pane is file names xxxxxx.jpg and I have to click on each one to make it display. How to make it faster to get to the image I want ? how can I set GIMP to auto load all the files in preview ? or something ?

I have no preview. Just an cross hair and the brush icon. So I have to blindly guess the size of the brush. Is there a way to get this back?
When I start the Open Image process in the Windows version of GIMP and move to a directory and select an image file, I get the message "Creating Preview", which briefly changes to "Preview is out of date". This takes a long tim and may never end, depending on the directory and file I choose. What is going on? Is GIMP creating a preview image of every graphic file in the directory? If so, can I set a low resolution somewhere in the program to reduce the time spent doing this. In some cases I can't see the image after I open the file, but that may be a different problem (feature?) of the program.

You can watch the video, linked below, but the basics are: I do a selection, scale the selection, make a new layer out of the floating selection result. I try to run a RGB Noise filter on the new layer and no preview shows in the filter dialog or it doesn't show correctly. If I anchor the floating selection into the original layer, instead of making a new layer out of it, the preview shows correctly. Is this a bug... or?

Searched three fora: this, General, and <I forget>. I looked for a Developer thread thinking this might already be a requested feature, but did not find one.
When I have a filter window open, most often there is a "preview" window--of fixed size--which I can pan, but not so far not figure out how to zoom to see detail.
I wish I may I wish I might:
- be able to resize the "preview" window
- be able to zoom in to see the effects of the filter better
The company I work for hired someone to take "professional" photos and the thumbnail preview is the normal color but when you view the actual image the colors are completely wrong. The background is supposed to be white.
