GIMP :: How To Make Different (rectangular) Selections On Different Layers
Jan 9, 2012
Can one make different (rectangular or otherwise) selections on different layers?
[e.g. I need to "fade" parts of an image in one layer, and need to "blur" different parts of the same image in a different layer... and want to save the different selections (each for "fade" and "blur" layers) for easier, future edit.]

So whenever I open up Gimp and then a new image, the layer for the background don't show up. > [URL]..
I've this window with all the tabs for the brushes, patterns etc and when I want to make the layers visible, I've to drag the layers window to the tabs and then drag it back to where it first was.. (it's quite hard to explain )
[URL]....
so basically, the layers don't show unless i do something what can i do about this?

How would I go about making certain text and/or layers to gradually move throughout a video? Can I not do that in Gimp 2?

I'm using Gimp 2.8.4 and when selecting a new layer to work on, it then switches to another layer which becomes the selected one.The only way I can definitely select the layer I want to work on is to make all other layers invisible.

I have checked the road map for GIMP and I have seen that the Unified transform tool can be expected in version 3.8. (ugh)
Now what I would like to ask is there any tool or plugin for GIMP that can transform my selections? Or is there any open source image editor that can do it.
I'm not an artist and just for this I have to use Photoshop. For me PS is an overkill for just cutting up an image.

However, I am not quite satisfied: whatever I try, the background never seem to match with the characters (I know most of you will find it awful, but my goal is to get it to be somewhat plausible, now it seems just too fake).

I obviously got far enough to add the images together and get the correct size. I just cant find any tutorials to show me how to make the layers blend and look more natural. I added a new background to an image and I want it to look like it belongs there:

how do I make the layers of the image follow the contours of the book background to make it look more realistic like it is text in the book? I have an open book background and I want all my layers in the xcf file follow the curves of the book, how do I do that?

So I have 2 alpha channels. When I try to make a new selection intersecting those 2 alpha channels, there is always about 1 px that is not selected...
In the image the black pixels are the new selection, and red pixels are one of the alpha channels. No matter what I do, I can't make the new selection completely "fill the red pixels".

After invoking the color range command, I movedmy eye dropper over the image, (in this case, the large cloud) and clicked. Nothing is selected...nothing appears in the preview window. Alone, the eyedropper tool works well.
I tried color range with different images with the same result. Using the same images with the exact settings, I then tested them using color range in CS5.2 . It worked properly.
I'm using CS6 13.0.4 x64 on an iMAC OS 10.8.2.

I need to make about 400 selections to Subtract from a box using ProBoolean. Unfortunately it seems you have to select each individual one. Is there an easier way to do this? Essentially, I have a box and need about 400 holes punched through. I am just trying to determine the easiest way.
Right now I have to click on each cylinder one by one after I have arrayed them in order to subtract them. Does ProBoolean have an option to select multiple objects at once to subtract?

I'm trying to make a logo consisting of a bunch of simple shapes which are all individual layers. All of these layers are on top of a transparent canvas. I'm not sure if canvas is the right word, but basically what I mean is that I launched GIMP and made a new image that's 512x512 filled with transparency, and by default that became a layer titled background which I consider to be the canvas of my entire Image.
I can't seem to draw on new layers anymore. I've been trying to make new layers filled with transparency and draw on them with the free select tool, ensuring that the opacity is not 0 and that the layer is selected, but its drawing on the background layer rather than the layer I made to draw on. So now when I try to adjust the position of the layer, the shape I drew stays in the same spot because its not part of the layer.

I'm having some trouble pasting selections from GIMP into other programs. If my selection is not rectangular, a black background appears when I paste it that forces it to be a rectangle instead of the shape I actually selected. The program I specifically want to paste into is AutoREALM, but just to test I've tried pasting into MS Paint and MS Word, and the same problem occurs in all of them. Is there anything I can do in GIMP to prevent it from doing this?

I have an existing drawing (A3 size) which loads with a mottled grey background for some reason (looks fine when printed).
I want to select a couple of small rectangles and put them on another page. Perhaps another possibility could be if I could save my selections as separate files (if this were possible) then I could use the "Open as Layers" method which is well described in this forum.

I use the intelligent scissors quite a bit. In some instances, my picture is not a clear cut selection to where I can go around an place anchor points. For instance where the legs of animals cross over each other and pieces of the background show through the legs. Can multiple selections be made with the intelligent scissors? Or am I using the incorrect tool.

I'm scanning old photos from a photo album. There are a lot of these pages, so taking the pictures out and scanning them would be a huge hassle. The photos are too close on most pages for the scanning software to recognize them as separate images and save them as such.
I'd like to save them as individual pictures, both because that's neater and because some require color corrections.
I'd be able to open up the scanned image, select or outline the picture, and have some script save that selection as an individual file. Super ideally the name would be automatically generated, typing in "1" "2" "3" etc gets old, and I obviously don't want to overwrite. And if I could get automatic color correction before saving or in a batch, that would also be great.

How do you make a wall that's not rectanglar (in plan view)?
See attached image.
The brown color at the end of the wall indicates the polygonal shape which should be part of the wall.

Whenever I have a selection in an image, I can move it around all I want and wherever I want until I anchor it, but when I open that same image again after saving it and then select a part of the image, I can't get my selection to move. Rather the entire image moves and leaves transparent pixels. How do I move selections and not whole images without leaving transparent pixels?

Is there any way to just rotate a rectangular image? I have often scanned in something that's not square, it's often a brochure that's taller than it is wide. But when I scanned it, I had turn it sideways to get the whole thing visible to the scanner. So it scans completely, but now I have an image of it that's not "up is up"-- I have "up is right" or "up is left." But now I have to do all this junkbutter: 1) Look at the canvas size, 2) make the width & height equal to the larger of the two, 3) use the Rotate tool to turn the image 90 degrees, then 4) do some magic to move the image to start at the upper-left, and 5) crop it back down to get rid of the blank space on the bottom. YUCKY! Is there some magic tool I haven't found yet that will rotate, move and crop all in one step? I just want to turn the entire image on it's side without any other fuss. Is that possible somehow? I have to assume it is, but I sure couldn't find it...

I want to remove all but a rectangular area from an image. I do not want to make the rest of the image white, I want it to go away. I want to just have the rectangular image pixels left.
To be explicit, I want it to be like I cut up a photo, and threw the outside away.

I am trying to fill a selection in one picture with a selection from another picture. I am having problems scaling the selection to fit exactly. i still have an outline from the other (previous) selection.
I opened both images up side by side, Adjusted the view on both to 33%, made my first selection, hit control + c, made my selection on the other picture (Exact same shape), hit control + v + shift, then edit>transform>scale, then shift+drag.
Can't get it to line up. I also tried layering the two images then reducing the opacity of just the selection, but photoshop reduces the opacity of the entire layer instead of just the selection,

I often use my digital camera to take pictures of flat, rectangularobjects, like framed paintings on a wall, book or album covers, orpages of documents. Of course, I can't take these pictures straighton and perfectly level, but that's OK. I know what the dimensions ofthe objects are, so I can just correct the perspective in software.
In Graphic Converter (a Mac OS X app), I just use the "Unskew"function. I simply need to select the four corners of the rectangularobject I photographed. (Guide lines connecting the four points to locate them.) After I've located the four corners, I tell it to"unskew" and a rectangular image is produced.
Does Gimp have any function like this? I found the perspective tool, but that requires me to manually shift the perspective and eyeballwhen I think a rectangular image is produced. That's not nearly as convenient.

I have a task that I repeat all the time, where I have about 20 digital photos that are all taken of something the same size, at the same magnification, but not centered identically. I then need similarly centered, identical size and shape cropped images for all of the images. In Photoshop, a friend with the exact same task solves this by opening all of the images, making a rectangular selection of the appropriate size and shape by eye on the first image, and then dragging this rectangular selection from this first image into each other open images and hand-positioning in each image as he drags it in, so that all of the selections for cropping the images are the same shape and size, and can be individually positioned, rapidly. This exact solution is perfect for this task, and although it works great in Photoshop, selections can't be dragged intact from image to image in the same way in gimp 2.6.11 on ubuntu 11.04/gnome 2.32.1/linux 2.6.38-8 generic , so I am looking for a way to accomplish something similar.

I'm using CS6 and noticed that whenever I delete a layer that was a dupe of another layer with links (although not linked specifically to the deleted layer), the undeleted original layers become invisible on the canvas even though they are still visible in the layers pallette. I've been able to recreate this several times. Nothing I do will make the layers visible -I've tried moving them all to the top of the layers palette, making sure their opacity is 100%, making sure there are no layer effects, etc.

I merged my layers down to scale to proportion and I thought I was done with the project, so I saved it and exported. I then learned that I did something incorrectly, so I went back to the project only to remember I merged the layers and I don't know how to undo that. How do you revert the layers back to layers?

I'm trying to make this one effect on rasterized text. The effect works best on a black background, but the background and text have to be merged or it looks wrong. The thing is, is that I want the effect of the text seperate so that it's got a transparent background. What I was wondering is if there was some way to make 2 layers act as if they are 1, without them being merged.
